Theodore Mayer
COULTERVILLE -- Theodore John "Tater" Mayer, 43, died Friday, May 31, 2002 in his home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Trinity Lutheran Church in Conant, with Pastor Russ Helbig officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery in Pinckneyville. Friends may call from 5 until 9 p.m. Monday and from 8 until 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville. Memorials may be made to the Pinckneyville City Park Playground Fund or the Trinity Lutheran Building Project. Mr. Mayer was a self-employed farmer and worked for Consolidated Coal Company, Burning Star #4 in Cutler for 18 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Conant and a member of the UMWA. He was born July 23, 1958 in Pinckneyville to Theodore E. and Emma (Laubenthal) Mayer. His father preceded him in death. His mother survives. He was married to Judy Ruebke Aug. 21, 1982 in Sparta. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Katelyn; one sister, Emma "E. J. " Steele and her husband, Mark, and their daughter Nikki; two aunts, Freda (Mayer) Luker and her husband, Hank, of Michigan and Edie (Mayer) Verberder and her husband, Dave, of St. Louis, Mo. Two uncles, Fred and Carl, preceded him in death.

Lowell Laverne Grant
FERGES -- Lowell Laverne "Cubby" Grant, 87, died at 3:50 a.m. Sunday June 2, 2002, at Herrin HospitaL. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with Rev. Don Colson officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by the Marion V. F. W. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2002, at the funeral home. He was born April 1, 1915, in Marion, the son of Harry Hartwell and Lena (Sanders) Grant. He married Mary Garland (Burden) on July 18, 1936, in Perryville, Mo. She preceded him in death on September 20, 1998. He was a City Letter Carrier for Marion Post Office for 38 years. He was a veteran of the Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort Winfield Scott, San Francisco, CaliF. He was a devoted father and an avid sports fan. He is survived by three children, Dr. Dallas Grant and wife Carolyn of Danville, Kathie Brush and husband Floyd of Ferges and Lana Robinson of Johnston City; ten grandchildren, Renee Schulte and husband Brent, Angela Carey and husband Joe, Brian Grant, Kevin Grant and wife Sandy, Justin Brush, Andrea Brush, Shonda, Heather, Melanie, and Ashley Robinson, with a great-grandchild due in January; two sisters, Esther Hazel and husband George of Ferges and Mabel Grant of Herrin; one brother, Claris "Tot" Grant of Elizabethtown, Ky. ; a niece, Kimbra Lange, a nephew, Greg Hazel and wife Kim; twin great nephews, Matthew and Christopher Hazel; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Mary and Carolyn Sue Grant; two brothers, Eddie and Bill Grant; and a son-in-law, John Robinson.

Arthur Lewis
MARION -- Arthur Gene Lewis, 64, passed away at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Abbey Nursing Home in Carbondale. Arthur was born November 11, 1937, in Colbert, Ala. to B. H. and Willie Lewis. He is survived by two sons Kerry Patterson of Goreville, Alan Patterson of Moulton, Ala. ; four grandchildren Katie Smith and Regan Patterson both of Hurst and Scott and Misty Patterson both of Moulton, Ala. ; three brothers Buford Lewis, Earl and Shirley Lewis of Ark., and Charlie and Connie Lewis of Tuscumbia, Ala. ; three sisters Shelly Montgomery of Sheffield, Ala., Polly and Solan Ethridge of Leighton, Ala., Bet and Kenneth Martin of Leighton, AL. ; close friends Mamie and Harold Peppers of Goreville and Byron Dotson of Vienna. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers. Arthur was a retired machinist from C Line Production in Des Plaines. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Lewis' body will be cremated and private services will be held at a later date. Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be given to TIP Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Ann Sanders
NASHVILLE -- Ann Sanders, 92, died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Styninger-Krupp Funeral Home in Nashville.

Jack L. Horsley
MARION -- Jack L. Horsley, 79, died at 11 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, at Parkway Manor in Marion. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2002, at Mitchell- Hughes Funeral Home, with Rev. Melva England officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Marion. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 1301 of Marion. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. Memorial envelopes are available at the funeral home. Mr. Horsley was born July 9, 1922, in Marion to Luther & Edith (Davis) Horsley. He married Inez (Anderson) Horsley on December 19, 1943, in Marion. She survives. Jack retired from CIPS with 27 years of service as a switchboard operator at the CIPS Grand Tower Plant. Prior to working for CIPS, he was a construction electrician. Jack was of the Methodist Faith. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was a member of B. P. O. E. #800 in Marion where he was Past Exalted Ruler. He was also a member of the American Legion in Murphysboro, Jackson County Country Club and Kokopelli Golf Club in Marion. Survivors include his wife, Inez Horsley of Marion; two daughters, Jackie K. Hutti of South Bend, Ind. and JoAnn Ober and husband Rick of Carterville; six grandchildren, Michelle Giannuzzi of South Bend, Ind., Angela McLaughlin of St. Louis, Nicole McRae of St. Louis, Jennifer Hagen of Pana, Brian Ober of Palatine, and Sara Ober of St. Louis; nine great grandchildren, Dominic and Vincenzo Giannuzzi, Kalyn and Brooke McLaughlin, Alex, Noah, and Cole Hagen, Ashlyn and Isaac Ober. He was preceded by his parents; one brother, Bill Horsley and one sister June Horsley, who died in infancy.

Ruth Ann Rains
MURPHYSBORO -- Ruth Ann Rains, 89, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with Rev. Donald Grammer officiating. Burial will be in Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 4 at the funeral home.

Kenji L. Tipton
CARBONDALE -- Kenji L. Tipton , 23, died at 9:34 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, at Frank Joseph Memorial Hospital of Murphysboro. Arrangements are incomplete at Jackson Funeral Home in Carbondale.

James Stockman
MARION -- James B. Stockman, age 71, of Marion, passed away at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2002, in the Marion Memorial Hospital of Marion. He was born in Fall River, Tennessee, on April 8, 1931, the son of Herman Reginald and Dorothy May (Bowman) Stockman. James answered the call of his country and began his career in the United States Navy by enlisting in 1948, at Cincinnati, Ohio. Some of the highlights of his career included attending the U. S. Naval School of Military Justice in 1952, and was commissioned CWO-3 at the U. S. Naval Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island on April 7, 1967. He was Assistant Flag Secretary on the Staff of Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet from July 15, 1971, until July 21, 1974. His last duty station before retirement was Director, Enlisted Personnel Dept., Naval Administrative Naval Training Center, San Diego, CA from August 2, 1974, until his retirement on September 30, 1975. He was united in marriage to Rena McInturff on April 2, 1986, in San Antonio, Texas. Together they have enjoyed over sixteen years of marriage. James's church membership was with the Herrin Church of ChriSt. Some of his other enjoyments and hobbies were golfing, building and flying remote controlled airplanes, building glass boxes, model ships and doing woodworking. He also accomplished an extensive genealogical study of his family history. James is survived by his wife, Rena of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and Robert Young of Spirit Lake, Idaho; son, Richard Stockman of Lakeside, Calif., four stepsons, William Wyatt of Marion, Robert Wyatt and his wife, Barbara, of Richardson, Texas, Rex Wyatt and his wife, Debbie, of San Jose, Calif., and Tracey Wyatt and his wife, Marla, of Marion, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, fourteen step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and John Bennet of Warsaw, Ky. ; and a brother Herbert Stockman of Cincinnati, Ohio. His parents preceded him in death. The funeral service for James B. Stockman will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home of Marion, with Minister Scott Cody officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at the Berea Cemetery of Vienna. The time of visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home. Donald T. Blechle
CHESTER -- Donald T. Blechle, 59, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Christian North East Hospital in Florissant, Mo. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chester, with Msgr. Dennis Schaefer officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Mary Catholic Church Cemetery in Chester. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, and Friday, June 7, from 7:30 to 10:45 a.m.
