Sarah Alice Kent
MARION -- Sarah Alice Kent, born Nov. 23, 1926, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Drue Kent, was buried at the family plot at Rose Hill Cemetery on Dec. 20. She passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, after a long battle with cancer. She was formerly married twice to the late Warren F. Tidwell and leaves two sons, Warren Drue Tidwell of Tuscola and Christopher Brett Tidwell of Ballwin, Mo. She had resumed her maiden name in 1980, six years before she retired from teaching elementary school in Elgin, where she did her final 25 years of teaching. She had retired to Hawaii for ten years before moving to the St. Louis area in June of 1996. In addition to her two sons, she is survived by two sisters, Bonnie Crawford of Evansville, Ind., and Patty Tanner of Gold Canyon, Ariz. ; one brother-in-law, Jack Tanner; a sister-in-law, Edwina Kent of Marion; one grandson; one granddaughter; one great grandson; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her late brother, John Kent of Marion. She stayed in touch with the Tidwell family members and her many friends in Marion, Elgin, Illinois, Hawaii and St. Louis.

Jessie Lingle
MARION -- Jessie Lee Lingle, 87, died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna. Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Hosmon officiating. Entombment will be at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home.

Charles Sullivan Jr.
CARRIER MILLS -- Charles "Chuck" Sullivan, Jr., 59, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in Springfield. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills. The Rev. Jack Holloman will officiate.

Flora Peeler
DONGOLA -- Mrs. Flora Dillow Peeler, 93, of Lemon Grove, Calif., formerly of Dongola, died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the Sun Bridge Care in Lemon Grove, CaliF. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna.

Dennis Dimitroff
DU QUOIN -- Dennis Dimitroff, 22, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Southeastern Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Arrangements are pending at Neal-McClure Funeral Home.

Thelma Ridlen
MARION -- Thelma R. Ridlen, 82, died at 2:05 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the Enfield Care Center. Arrangements are incomplete at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home.

Lena (Rancilio) Bellina
ROYALTON -- Lena (Rancilio) Bellina, 95, of 109 S. Meadow Street in Royalton, died at 2:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the O"Fallon Health Care Center in O"Fallon. Lena was born Aug. 7, 1907, in Herrin, to Henry and Josephine (DeBernardi) Rancilio. She married Americo P. Bellina June 16, 1932, in Herrin. He preceded her in death July 23, 1976. Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert H. and Henrietta Bellina of O"Fallon; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn K. and Dan Falcomata of Edwardsville; four grandchildren, Hank Bellina and his wife Marla and Lynn Bohnenstiehl and her husband Rob, all of O"Fallon, Tod Falcomata of Houston, Texas, and Terry Falcomata of Atlanta, Ga. ; and seven great-grandchildren, Kara, Michael, Alex and Liz Bellina and Robby, Sam and Bailey Bohenstiehl; and two nieces, Lita Bleyer of Carbondale and Marilyn Walker of Herrin. Her parents and two sisters, Mary Bione and Kay Jacobson, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Bellina was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Royalton. She and her husband, Americo, owned and operated "Bellina Electric" in Royalton from 1945 to 1972. Prior to that she worked for many years at Zwick"s Shoe Store in Herrin. Special thanks to Dr. Frank Bleyer for his loving care, commitment and dedication. Funeral services for Mrs. Bellina will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the St. Aloysius Church in Royalton, with Monsignor Angelo Lombardo officiating. Burial will be at the San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin. Visiting hours are from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton, where a vigil prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. with Father Joseph Schrage officiating. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Bellina may be made to the Royalton Library Fund and sent to the Herrin Security Bank, P. O. Box 376, Royalton, IL 62983. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Altha H. Brown
PITTSBURG -- Altha H. Brown, 84, passed away at 2:47 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Marion Memorial HospitaL. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at Mitchell- Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. Rev. Frankie Pierce, Rev. Cecil Atchison and Rev. Edward Handkins will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home. Altha was born March 31, 1918, in Williamson County, to William R. and Flossie (Scobey) Handkins. She married William V. "Bill" Brown on Aug. 5, 1939, in Marion, Ky. He preceded her in death July 16, 2002. She attended nursing school, worked in real estate, and owned an antique shop. She was also a secretary for her husband Bill when he served as Williamson County Treasurer. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Daughters of 1812 and Daughters of the American Revolution, and volunteered at Marion Memorial Hospital for many years. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Martha Ann Richardson of Marion, Mary Katherine "Kay" and Larry Woodson of Pittsburg and Admiral Nancy E. Brown and Pete Hesser of Annandale, Va. ; three grandchildren, Deborah A. Powers, Patricia (Patty) Rohrschneider and William Lee Richardson. Altha was the last of seven children. Brothers and sisters preceding her in death include Eugene Handkins, Alva Handkins, Mabel Ozment, Marie Williams, Wilma Mifflin and Bernie Mae Handkins. Jolene Svoboda
CRAB ORCHARD -- Jolene (Jo) Marie Svoboda, 43, of Crab Orchard, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2002, at her home in Crab Orchard. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at Riggin- Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Carol Gericke and Brother Wayne Emery. Burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Shed Cemetery in Crab Orchard. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today, Saturday, at the funeral home. Jolene was born on Dec. 28, 1958, in Kankakee, to George L. and Imogene (McCawley) Barker. She married Kevin (Bone) Svoboda on June 25, 1977, in Joliet. She is survived by her husband, Kevin (Bone) Svoboda of Crab Orchard; one daughter and son-in-law, Mardean and John Roach of Crab Orchard; one son, Landon Svoboda at home; one sister and brother in-law, Danell Lynn and Vern Lemasters of Marion; one brother, George C. Barker of Crab Orchard; one grandson, Corbin Kelton of Crab Orchard; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roy and Dorothy Svoboda of North Riverside. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Shayla Marie, in 1988; and one sister, Mardean Barker, in 1963. Jolene was a homemaker and ran her own cleaning service. She worked at the Crab Orchard Library for many years. She attended the Cedar Grove Methodist Church, where she served as chairperson of the CARE committee. She also taught pre-school Sunday school at the church and was active in their Vacation Bible SchooL. Jolene never met a stranger. Her life was devoted to serving the Lord and her family. She enjoyed spending time at Crab Orchard Lake with her family and lovingly caring for her animals. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Frank Gilbert (Five) Tregoning
CARTERVILLE -- Frank Gilbert (Five) Tregoning, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the Marion V. A. Medical Center in Marion. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Dec. 21, at Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Dan Shasteen officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Herrin VFW and American Legion posts. Visitation was Friday at the funeral home. Frank was born May 17, 1915, in Carterville, to George and Edna (Tyner) Tregoning. He married Mae Walker, and she preceded him in death. He is survived by two step-daughters, Ludene Strunk of Herrin and Anna Merle Wolf of Colorado; four sisters, Joie Elting of Carterville, Mable Olund of Carterville, Mary Cole of Los Angeles, Calif., and Helen Storme of Champaign; and two brothers, Seibert Tregoning and Tom Tregoning, both of Carterville. He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Nadine Isbell and Margaret Martin; and two brothers, Sam and Bob Tregoning. Frank owned and operated Tregoning Coal Company for many years in rural Carterville. He was a farmer who enjoyed raising cattle at his farm in Saratoga Springs. He honorably served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He served in an amphibious unit from 1943 to 1945. He was involved in the invasions of Normandy, Sicilli, Salerno, Anzio and North Africa, while serving on the Florence Nightingale, LST 360, and the LST 357. He was a lifetime member of the Herrin VFW Post 1567. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital.

David Parks
DESOTO -- David Parks, 56, died at 8:50 a.m., Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at home. Arrangements are pending at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale.
