Denny Brian Cooper
GOREVILLE -- Denny Brian Cooper, 47, of Goreville, passed away at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in Hinthorn Cemetery, Lake Bloomington. Blue Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangementsMemorials may be made to his children, envelopes are available at the funeral home or may be sent c/o Blue Funeral Home, P. O. Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Mr. Cooper was born on April 20, 1957, in Normal, to Denzel W. and Rosella M. (Geiger) Cooper. He married Kendra Butcher in 1981 in Anna. Survivors include his wife Kendra; sons, Joshua G. and Cody W. ; his father, Denzel W. Cooper; sister, Wava Lee Kaupp; half brother, Dave Cooper; good friend, Dave Neal; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents.

Dorthella Bratten
DU QUOIN -- Dorthella Bratten, 78, of Du Quoin, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at home. Arrangements are incomplete at Blue Funeral Home in Marion.

Jacob Hammel
DU QUOIN -- Jacob J. Hammel, 91, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:35 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at home. Jacob was a retired washer/ operator for Majestic Coal Mine. He was also a farmer and carpenter. He joined the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church in 1947, where he was the R. A. director and also the junior boys Sunday school teacher for several years. He was also member of UMWA and the Carpenters Union. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was precious to his family and will be greatly missed. He was born on March 15, 1913, in Jackson County, the son of Truman and Wilma (Harriss) Hammel. He married Jessie A. Bowlin on Oct. 30, 1937, at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Du Quoin, and she survives. He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Wilma Hammel and Ron and Gayla Hammel, all of Du Quoin; one sister, Letta Perry of Du Quoin; five grandchildren, Bethany McConville of Arlington, Tenn., Kyle Hammel of Du Quoin, Cindy Witbracht and Kristi Rennison, both of Pinckneyville, and Jonathon Jacob Hammel of Du Quoin; and six great-grandchildren, Megan McConville and Cole McConville, both of Arlington, Tenn., and Elizabeth Witbracht, Sarah Rennison, Chase Witbracht and Luke Rennison, all of Pinckneyville. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lester Hammel. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, in the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ted Clark officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Old Du Quoin Cemetery. Friends may make memorials to the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church, Luke Memorial Hospice or St. Jude's Children's Hospital and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Ferd Hornbostel
CHESTER -- Ferd F. Hornbostel, 101, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at home. Memorial services will be a 2 p.m. today in the St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, with the Rev. Mark Willig officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. today at the church. Memorials may be made to the family or to the St. John Lutheran Church Debt Fund or Cemetery Fund.

Sallie Tennison
BENTON -- Sallie Meeks Tennison, 87, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, in St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. Mrs. Tennison's wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Poulson Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements. The family requests no food and no flowers. Cards would be appreciated.

Albert Epplin
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Albert M. Epplin, 81, of Pinckneyville, died at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at home. Albert was born on Aug. 5, 1923, a son to Joseph S. and Emma Katherine (Endres) Epplin in Pinckneyville. He married Florence Ina Baudison on July 21, 1951, in Todds Mill, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 19, 1964. He was a farmer, dairyman and gardener. He was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus No. 2921 in Pinckneyville and a member of the Perry County Farm Bureau. Survivors include two sons, Stephen J. and Sylvester J. Epplin, both of Pinckneyville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mariann and Dale Timmermann of Vandalia, Catherine and Tom Santos of Port Isabel, Texas, and Caroline and David Giger of Highland; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Celeste Epplin of Florissant, Mo., and Joe and Mildred Epplin of Pinckneyville; two sisters-in-law, Ida Epplin of Missouri and Marge Epplin of Vergennes; a friend of the family, Florence Alstat; and four grandchildren, Ben, Mark and Jenny Timmermann and Lena Giger. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two infant sons, Louis John and Bernard Joseph Epplin; three brothers, Carl, Edward and Clement Epplin; and one sister, Agnes Bruns. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, in the St. Bruno Catholic Church, with Father Brian Barker officiating. Interment will be in the St. Bruno Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville. The rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the St. Bruno School Endowment Fund or to the American Cancer Society.

Butch 'Elroy' Grob
MURPHYSBORO -- Butch 'Elroy' Grob, 64, died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at home in Murphysboro. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Revs. Jeff Gordon and C. L. McKinnies officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday until the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro or to the donor's choice. Mr. Grob was a retired owner of Butch Grob Auto Sales and Accessories. Butch was a businessman in Murphysboro for several years. He and his family owned the Old Rome restaurant for several years before operating Butch Auto Sales and Accessories. He loved to work in his yard. He was born Sept. 12, 1940, in Murphysboro, to Elroy Grob and Vada (Wehrheim) Grob. He married Kathie Brantley June 22, 1972, in Murphysboro. He is survived by his wife Kathie of Murphysboro; two sons and their families, Scott, Brandy and Cameron of Murphysboro, and Kip, Jami and Jackson of Cambria. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy.

Frances Rosalie Merckel
HARRISBURG -- Frances Rosalie Merckel, 89, of Wentzville, Mo., formerly of Harrisburg, died at 6:25 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, in Parklane Convalescent Center in Wentzville. Services will be at 9 a.m. today in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Harrisburg, with Pastor Ed Merckel officiating. There will be no visitation. Those attending should go directly to the cemetery. Gaskins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Hines III
BENTON -- Robert Hines III, 37, of St. Louis, formerly of Benton, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, in Poulson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Dale Carson officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pauline Morgan
DU QUOIN -- Pauline E. Sizemore Morgan, 74, died at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, in the Pyatt-Harrawood and Epplin Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. C. L. McKinnies officiating. Burial will be in the Old Du Quoin Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bill Yankey
CHESTER -- William 'Bill' G. Yankey, 72, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Schroeder- McClure Funeral Chapel in Chester, with the Revs. Cecil Dunning and Mike Fogerson officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery in Steeleville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Bessie Mae 'Sister' Martin Lewis
CARBONDALE -- Bessie Mae 'Sister' Martin Lewis was born on Nov. 23, 1941, in Charleston, Miss., to the union of the late Bessie R. (Meriwether) and Newburger Martin. Bessie departed this life on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, in the United Regional Health Care Center in Wichita Falls, Texas. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and was a member of St. John's Missionary Baptist Church in Wichita Falls. Bessie received her education in the Carbondale school system and later attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she received her nursing degree. She continued her educational development by successfully obtaining a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland at Heildeburg, Germany. She was employed for 24 years as a master instructor at Chanute Air Force Base until her retirement in 2001. On Aug. 20, 1968, Bessie was united in marriage to Norah Lewis Jr. in Boston. To celebrate her homegoing and cherish her loving memory, she leaves her devoted husband, Norah, of Wichita Falls; her beloved children and their spouses, Delanard Martin of San Diego, Michelle Lewis of Wichita Falls, Anthony and Belinda Lewis of Richmond, Va., and Travis and Anessa Lewis of Champaign; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Earnest L. and Sue Martin and George W. and Henrietta Martin, all of Carbondale, Mack E. and Carolyn Martin of Dolton, and Larry Martin of Stone Mountain, Ga. ; one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy J. and Henry Slaughter of Champaign; 13 grandchildren; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, her father, three sisters, one brother, both paternal and maternal grandparents, and two uncles. Bessie was a very loving and caring sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her joy was often shown in all that she did and touched. She will always be remembered for her compassion for others, her glowing personality filled with laughter, and her love and devotion for family. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in New Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Carbondale, with Pastor Norman Greer officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery of Carbondale. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Algee's Funeral Home of Carbondale is in charge of arrangements.
