Hugh A. Franks
Hugh A. Franks, 80, of Elgin. passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin. Born September 10, 1921 in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, to Archibald G. and Ida May (nee O'Gorrman) Franks. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Retired from Acme Industrial Company in Carpentersville after many years of service. He was a member of the Elgin Owls Club and The Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1193 of Algonquin.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette (nee Struck), whom he married on January 28, 1965; a son, Patrick H. Franks of Elgin; a step son, Ralph (Dee) Belzer of Arizona; three step daughters, Evelyn Mills Kersten of Algonquin, Rita Rucker of Carpentersville and Debra Rice of Florida; a brother, Glen (Jean) Franks of Michigan and a sister, Rita (Jim) Noel of Florida; 18 step-grandchildren and 17 step great-grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews.
preceded in death by his parents and a step son, Joseph Mills.
Funeral services on Monday, April 22, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral Chapel, 51 Center Street, Elgin, IL. Rev. Thomas O'Connor of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Elgin, will officiate. Burial private. Visitation Sunday, April 21, 2002 from 2 to 6 P.M. at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral Chapel, Elgin. Memorials to St. Paul's United Church of Christ.

David A. Haverkampf
David A. Haverkampf, 75, formerly of East Dundee, passed away on March 15, 2002 at his home in St. Germain, Wisconsin. He was born in Dundee on September 24, 1926 to Morris W. and Althea L. (Holtz) Haverkampf. He graduated from Dundee High School in 1944 and was principally employed by Haeger Potteries for 23 years before moving his family to northern Wisconsin as owner and operator of Sunrise Shores Resort in St. Germain. Mr. Haverkampf also owned and operated a building construction business. He was an avid outdoorsman and is credited with starting two local chapters of Ducks Unlimited in northern Wisconsin.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Morris of Dundee; a sister, Marcia Driscoll of Elgin and a favorite aunt and uncle, Helen and Harold Haertel of Dundee.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Warner) Haverkampf of St. Germain; two sons, David Haverkampf of Shoshone, Idaho and Thomas (Tammy) Haverkampf of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; five daughters, Susan (Jack) Santerelli and Betsy (Tom) Rieke of St. Germain, Jo Anne (Jim) Daniel of Sayner, Wisconsin, Nancy (Bruce) Richter of Eagle River, Wisconsin and Kelly Haverkampf (Tom) Schwarts of Lodi, Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was given for Mr. Haverkampf on Wednesday, March 20 at the Bolger Funeral Home in Woodruff, Wisconsin.

Florence Otahal, R.N.
Florence Otahal, R.N., 79, of East Dundee passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at her home. She was cared for during that time by her family and friends. Her death was dignified and peaceful. Mrs. Otahal was born in Chicago on August 7, 1922. She was the daughter of George and Florence Hockel. The family moved to Lyons, IL where she spent her childhood. Mrs. Otahal attended St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Elgin and was a 1944 graduate. She worked hard all her life as a devoted wife, mother and R.N. During her nursing career, she worked at St. Joseph Hospital OB/GYN floor for over 20 years. She also worked for three area doctors. She was very well known and often people would say to her, "You helped deliver my baby". Up until her death, she was still involved with Provena St. Joseph Alumni. Her name and picture hang in the entryway of the hospital in Elgin. Mrs. Otahal has been a member of the St. Catherine Of Siena Church for over 50 years. She was a proud member of the Resurrection Funeral Choir.
She is survived by three children, Tom (Jeri) Otahal of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Pastor Gerry (Linda) Otahal of Huntingburg, Indiana and Lori (Steve) Higa of South Elgin; five grandchildren, Tom Otahal of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jessica Bryant of East Dundee, Joan (Devin) Etheridge of Chervils, Oregon, Harmony and Bethany Otahal, both of Evansville, Indiana; a brother, George (Joyce) Hockel of Hanwood, Wisconsin; a sister, Alice Kopkowski of Stickney, IL; many nieces, nephews and friends across our beautiful country also survive, including her beloved Dachshund, Tina.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 51 years, Joseph F. Otahal. He passed away on September 4, 1996. They married on October 13, 1945.
Funeral Mass will be on Monday, April 22, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. in the St. Catherine Of Siena Church, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-6:00 P.M. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Monday in church from 9:00 A.M. until time of mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Provena Hospice, 77 N. Airlite St., Elgin, IL 60123.

Simon H. "Smitty" Schmitt
Simon H. "Smitty" Schmitt, 62, of Elgin, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2002 in his home. He was born November 11, 1939 in Bad Axe, MI and was the son of John and Frances (Helewski) Schmitt. Simon was a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a Pipefitter for Temperature Maintenance Corporation and Precision Mechanical Incorporated for many years prior to his retirement.
Member and past Governor of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #799. Member of the American Legion Post #57. Member of the Pipefitter' Union #597.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hartman of Elgin; four children, Patricia De George and Karen Valdez, both of Elgin, IL, John (Kim) Schmitt of St. Charles, IL and Richard (Sheri) Schmitt of Ballwin, MO; six grandchildren, Nina, Marie, Ricky, Christina, Daylatta and Austin; a step-son, Charles (Dawn) Hartman of Fox River Grove, IL; step-daughter, Julie Hartman of Milwaukee, WI; three step-grandchildren, Cherise, Ja'Sha and Ja Corey; a sister, Helen (Lon) Decker of CA; brothers, Carl (Joan) of CA and Jim (Irene), Bernard, Frances and John, all of MI; also many close family and friends.
preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 7:00 P.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be private. Visitation will be on Saturday from 4:00 P.M. until the time of services in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

George L. Vesely
George L. Vesely, 70, of Dundee Township passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002 at his home surrounded by his family after battling cancer. He was born at St. Anne's Hospital in Chicago on July 16, 1931. He was the son of Ludwig and Lila (nee Stupka) Vesely. He was a many year resident of the Dundee area.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marcela L. Groebner Vesely, whom he married on November 24, 1956 in the First Congregational Church of Elgin; four children, Linda (David) Armintrout of Effingham, IL, Jeffery of Algonquin, Lee Ann (James) Fisher of Roselle and Gregg (Jennifer) of Arlington Heights; seven grandchildren, Jeanice and Joseph Armintrout, A.J., Benjamin and Henry Fisher and Luke and Matthew Vesely; a brother, John (Jean) Vesely of Schaumburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be on Sunday at 3:00 P.M. in the First Congregational Church of Elgin. The Rev. Lois A. Bucher will officiate. Burial will follow in the Burlington Township cemetery, Burlington. Visitation will be on Sunday in the church from 2:00 P.M. until time of services. The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy E. Follman
Dorothy E. Follman, 88, of South Elgin, formerly of Hampshire, passed away Sunday, April 6 at Alderwood Healthcare Center, South Elgin. She was born in Elgin, IL, the daughter of William T. Anderson and Mable J. (Kelly) Anderson. Dorothy attended grade school in Pingree Grove and graduated from Plato Center High School in 1932. She worked at Bowes Nursing Home, Elgin as a nurse's aid until retiring. Dorothy was a member of the South Elgin Community Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Donald K. (Emmy Lou) Anderson and Robert W. (Aileen) Anderson.
She is survived by a daughter, Margaret (Glenn) McDonald of Hampshire, and a son Wayne (Darlene) Follman of Carpentersville, eight grandchildren: David (Nancy) McDonald, Denise McDonald, Wayne, Jr. (Leesa) Follman, Dawn (Gary) DeMarco, Veronica (Daniel) DeMarco, Rene (Jon) Bohaez, Diana (Jose) Gomez, Eric Follman and 22 great grandchildren, Preston, Aaron, Shane, Tiffany, William, Tabitha, Michael, Kevin, Nicholas, Brittany, Sarah, Amber, Travis, Garret, Christopher, Jessica, Addrianna, Cruz, Allie, Jose, Amanda and Biana. She is also survived by four nieces, Donna (Roger) Burnidge, Diane (Kevin) Carlson, Judith Anderson, Reverend Kathleen (Terry) Hendrix and three grandnieces and one grandnephew.
A memorial service will be held at the South Elgin Community United Methodist Church, 400 W. Spring Street, on Wednesday, April 23 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Mary Wise officiating. Interment will be at the Udina cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the South Elgin Community United Methodist Church or Provena St. Joseph Hospice.

Carole A. Hester
Carole A. Hester, 61, of Carpentersville died Thursday, April 17, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born in Chicago on April 9, 1942. Carole was a resident of the Dundee area for the past 27 years. Carole was an avid golfer and was active in many golf leagues at Randall Oaks and Bonnie Dundee Golf Courses.
She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Austin C.; two daughters, Kerrie (Howard) Russo of St. Charles and Kelly Hester of South Elgin; four grandchildren, Julie, Alexander, Kaleigh and Austin.
Carole was very excited and looking forward to the birth of her grandson, Joseph in July.
She is also survived by her mother, Helen Haney of West Dundee; one brother, Dennis (Linda) Haney of Carpentersville. Many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
She was preceded in death by her father, Malcolm Haney and one brother, Malcom Haney, Jr.
Family and friends will meet for funeral mass on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Cyprian Catholic Church, 2601 Clinton Ave., River Grove, IL. The Rev. Ron Navoy will officiate. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be on Monday from 4-9 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee.

David Andrew Stingley
David Andrew Stingley, age 49, of Mt. Carroll, IL, died Friday, April 18, 2003 at his home after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
A Funeral Mass for David will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at SS. John and Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll with Father Moises Apostol as Celebrant. Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 3:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
David was born June 30, 1953 in Savanna, IL, the son of Eugene and Florence (Mullen) Stingley. He graduated from the Savanna High School with the Class of 1972. David then served in the U.S. Navy until 1975.
David married Teresa Swiech July 19, 1996 in Mt. Carroll. He had worked as an auto mechanic for Matt's Automotive in Mt. Carroll for 15 years, and most recently as the Parts Manager for Piper Chevrolet in Mt. Carroll. He also served as a Mt. Carroll City Alderman.
David was a member of SS. John and Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll, a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus member; and a member of the Savanna American Legion.
David loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed bowling, gardening and fishing at Pleasant Lake, WI.
David's family includes his wife, Teresa of Mt. Carroll; his mother, Florence of Savanna; a son, Christopher of Mt. Carroll, two step sons, Rick Zink of Freeport, IL and John Charles of Mt. Carroll; a step daughter, Kathy Zink of Rockford, IL; two grandchildren, Trevor and Tanner; two brothers, Robert (Cyndi) Austin of Vidor, TX and Michael (Beaulah) Stingley of Savanna; two sisters, Marilyn Sue (David) Sorensen of South Elgin, IL and Kimberly Weik of Port Edwards, WI; and many nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his father, Eugene.

Dorothy Mae McDonald Struve
Dorothy Mae McDonald Struve, 95, of Elgin, passed away Friday, April 18, 2003 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She was born March 7, 1908 in Plato Township, the daughter of Elmer and Ruby Lemon McDonald. She had been a resident of the Plato Township area all of her life. She and her husband Theodore operated the family farm for many years before retiring. She also had been employed at the Elgin National Watch Co.
Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Gathman of Elgin, two grandsons, Michael (Cindy) Gathman of Genoa and Don (Jana) Gathman of Boise, ID, four great grandchildren, Rachel and Heather Gathman of Genoa and Alexi and Macy Gathman of Boise, ID, one sister, Lorraine (Leslie) Muirhead of Nashville, TN.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Theodore R. Struve in 1999 and two sisters, Marion McDonald in 1953 and Evelyn O'Flaherty in 2002.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Paul Meyers officiating. Burial will be in Plato Center cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Cornerstone United Methodist Church or Provena St. Joseph Hospice.

Kimberly S. Brandenburg
Kimberly S. Brandenburg, 45, of Elgin passed away Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
She was born March 17, 1957 in Elgin, the daughter of Eugene and Shirley Kurt Granger.
She was a graduate of Larking High School Class of 1975. She had been a resident of Elgin most of her life. She was employed as a Baker at various business's.
Surviving are her husband, John W. Brandenburg; daughter, Kendra Brandenburg of Elgin; son, Ethan Crawford of Elgin; mother, Shirley Granger of Elgin; two sisters, Michele Fisher of Glen Ellyn and Debra Scott of Elgin; brother, Kevin Granger of Elgin; maternal grandmother, Frances Kurt of Elgin; step mother, Geneva Granger of Dixon, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; and a sister, Patricia Granger.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 11 AM at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin with Rev. Jeff Suits officiating. Burial will be private.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 9 PM in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Kidney Cancer Foundation.

Elmer Hecht
Elmer Hecht, 76, a 64 year resident of Bartlett passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002.
He was born January 17, 1926 in Hanover Township, IL.
He was Chief of the Bartlett Fire Department from 1968 to 1994 when he retired. Mr. Hecht started with the fire department as a volunteer in 1952. He was the current President of the Riverside Club in Elgin for many years and a member of the Two Cylinder Club and belonged to several Fire Associations. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a Bartlett Living Legend and had a real zest for life.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary (nee Airhart); three children, Marla Hecht of South Elgin, Gayla Hecht of Geneva and Chad Hecht of Wauwautosa, WI; two grandchildren, Katie and Carrie Ehlers; a sister, Evelyn Leseberg; and was the dear uncle of Earl and Duane Hamann, Tami Bane and Millie Klinnert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Amanda (Flentge) Hecht; and a sister, Amanda Hamann.
Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Cremation will be private.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 23, 2002 from 2 to 9 PM in the Countryside Funeral Home, 950 South Bartlett Rd. (at Stearns Rd.), Bartlett.
Memorials made to Immanuel United Church of Christ Accessibility Fund, 415 W. North Ave., Bartlett, IL, 60103 Would be appreciated.
