Lorraine H. (Ulbricht) Sopocy, 81, of Elgin passed away Thursday, August 2, 2001 at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village.
Beloved wife of the late John Sopocy. Loving mother of Carol (Chuck) Gurke, John (Joyce) Sopocy, JoAnn (Matt) Mrozek, Barbara (George) Birkmann, Linda (Jerry) Lankford and Joyce (Philip) Mayer. Proud grandmother of 17. Great grandmother of 10. Fond sister of Gladys Zeitler, Charlotte Fick and the late Ruth Ruchalski.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, August 5, 2001 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Grove Memorial Chapel. 1199 S. Arlington Heights Rd. Elk Grove, IL.

Jack W. Habermehl
Jack W. Habermehl, 89, of Elgin passed away on Monday at Sherman West Court. He was born January 26, 1915 in Murphysboro, IL.
Jack made Grandfather clocks in the Elgin area after his retirement from Elgin Glass and Mirror.
He is survived by his two sons, Lendell (Lisa) Stout of Lake In The Hills and William R. Stout of Elgin. Two grandchildren, Lynette and John. His sister-in-law, Jeanne Shounk of Elmhurst, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Velma Dean Habermehl in 1978 and also a brother, Ben.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at Madison Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Madison Funeral Home 847-741-1128.

Shirley A. Miller
Shirley A. Miller, 74, of Algonquin died Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at the Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born on November 2, 1929 in Dundee Township, the daughter of Frederick W. and Herta (nee Klahn) Miller. Shirley was a life long resident of the Dundee-Algonquin areas. She was a 1947 graduate of Dundee Community High School, a 1951 graduate of the University of Illinois, Champaign where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She also earned her Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of Illinois. Shirley was a Home Economics Teacher. She began her teaching career in Byron, Illinois. She taught in Mount Carroll, Illinois and retired after 37 years of teaching in the Chicago Heights-Bloom Township School District. Shirley taught one of the first classes in Child Care in the southern suburbs and was helpful in implementing the program in other Chicago schools. She was a life long, very faithful and active member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of East Dundee, she attended the Senior Bible Class, was a former member of the adult choir and she volunteered her time by providing child care several times during the week for the different young mother's bible studies.
She is survived by her sister, Myrtle H. of Algonquin; her niece, Sandra (Michael) Schroeder of Algonquin; her nephews, Martin (Anne) Miller and Robert (Wendy) Miller both of Lake in the Hills; and seven great nieces and nephews. Several cousins and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Robert F. Miller.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 11 AM in the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 310 E. Main Street, East Dundee with the Rev. William P. Yonker, Senior Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Dundee Township East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee and on Thursday in church form 10 AM until time of service. Please omit flowers, memorials may be made to the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Sherman Hospital Oncology Department.

Elsie C. Riley
Elsie C. Riley, 81, of Elgin, former many year resident of Burlington, died on Sunday, August 1, 2004 in her home. She was born on December 10, 1922 in Roselle, IL and was the daughter of Babetta and John Zweifel. Elsie had been a long time resident of Burlington, where she owned and operated Swanson's Grocery Store. In later years, she worked at St. Joseph Hospital and the Larkin Home for Children. After retiring, Elsie and her husband, Ralph, spent their winters in LaBelle, Florida, where they also owned a home. After becoming ill in 1997, she had the never ending care and devotion of her husband, Ralph. During the last months of her life, Elsie was sustained by many family members and friends as care givers.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ralph Riley; two sons, Richard (Wanda) Swanson of Elgin and James (Carol) Swanson of St. Charles, IL; her daughter, Cher (John) Pociask of McHenry, IL; six grandchildren, Linda (Scott) Workman, Rob (Lori) Swanson, Jason Swanson, Scott Swanson, Kris Pociask and John (Natasha) Pociask; five great grandchildren, Alexandra, Emily and Matthew Workman, and Isabella and Joseph Swanson; her brother, Al (Florence) Zweifel of Hoffman Estates; and her sister, Gertrude Kramer of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert E. Swanson; three brothers, John, Fred and Frank; and a sister, Pauline.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at 11 AM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 9 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Donald G. Whetstone, Jr.
Donald G. Whetstone, Jr., 36, of Elgin passed away Saturday, July 31, 2004 in his home. He was born on May 7, 1968 in Park Ridge, IL. Donald was an avid outdoorsman, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and never forgotten.
Survivors include his father, Donald G. (Donna) Whetstone Sr. of St. Charles, IL; his mother, Marsha Whetstone of Lake in the Hills, IL; two sisters, Barbara (Scott) Shadley of Athens, IL and Elizabeth Kelly (Steve) Reinhardt of Crystal Lake, IL; nieces and nephews; his girl friend, Celeste Parks; three children, Jacob Whetstone, Ryan and Kaley Parks; and maternal grandparents.
preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; and an uncle, Charles Whetstone.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 AM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 9 PM in the funeral home.

Grace Jennette Dean
Grace Jennette Dean, age 92, of Richardson, Tex., passed away Friday, August 3, 2001, in Dallas, Texas. She was born on the Kenyon farm home, south of Elgin, the daughter of Grace E. (Manley) Kenyon and W.C. Kenyon. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1927 and from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1931. She taught home economics in high school. She was married for 67 years to Dr. Hartzell Dean.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Donald K. Dean, of Potomac, Md.; one daughter, Janet Upchurch of Richardson, Tex.; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Gifford; one brother, W. Clifford Kenyon, both of South Elgin and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Gore; four brothers, David C., John W., Warren M. and Harold L.; and two sisters, Ruth Treadwell and Frances Gussman.
Funeral services will be held at Chapel Griffin-Liggett Rest Hills in North Little Rock, Ark. on Tuesday, August 7, 2001.

Lucille L. Engstrom
Lucille L. Engstrom, 87, of Geneva, Illinois, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, August 3, 2001 at the Apostolic Christian Resthaven in Elgin, Illinois.
She was born May 26, 1914 in Neillsville, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late James and Rose Milton.
Mrs. Engstrom was a member of the Geneva United Methodist Church, Star of the East #16, White Shrine of Jerusalem formerly of Batavia now in DeKalb, Illinois and Past Matron of Geneva Chapter #952 Order of Eastern Star. She was employed for several years by Gibson Dry Cleaners in Geneva.
She is survived by her two sons, Gordon (Sherry) Engstrom of Mesa, Arizona and Bruce (Linda) Engstrom of New Haven, Indiana; three sisters, Delores (Edwin) Kaspar of Bloomingdale, Illinois, Virginia Rahn of Zephyrhills, Florida and Gloria Svetlik of New Holstein, Wisconsin; and a granddaughter, Laura of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sture; two brothers, Louis and Raymond Milton; and a grandson, Donald.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at the Yurs Wittenberg Funeral Home, 1771 W. State St. (Rte. 38), Geneva with Rev. William Obalil officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Geneva.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 7 PM Tuesday. For further information, please call 630-232-7337.

Mary M. Angell
Mary M. Angell, 84, of Elgin, formerly of Oquawka, IL passed away Tuesday in her home. She was born on May 23, 1920 in London Mills, IL and was the daughter of William and Ruth Baley.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Lana (Robert) Bartlett of Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her son, John Kellett.
Memorial services will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM in the Epworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph Snider, officiating. Laird Funeral Homes of Elgin and West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Wayne Couser
Harold Wayne Couser, 67, of Elgin.
Devoted husband of Delores (nee Rider) Couser. Loving father of Harold Allen (Dianne) Couser, Fonda (Jeffrey) Ryan, and Susan Kelly Couser. Proud grandfather of Brandon Couser, Brittany Couser, Chase Ryan, and Nolan Ryan. Caring brother of Martin (Rosalyn) Couser, Minnie (late Henry) Villiani, Mary Ellen (Allen) Mosby, Margaret (Jim) Nagasawa, and the late Lewis Couser. Kind uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Harold was born October 15, 1936 in New Haven, IL to the late Ruth and Thomas Couser. He died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 3 years, after which he was employed for 36 years as Lab Technician at Chicago Rawhide. Harold retired in 1997. Throughout his life, he was always devoted to his family, his children, their friends, and his grandchildren for all activities and support.
Visitation will be held Saturday, September 4, 2004 from 1:00PM until the time of Memorial Service at 4:00PM at Windridge Funeral Home, 104 High Road, Cary, IL 60013. Information: 847-639-2191.

Albert P. Elvin
Albert P. Elvin, 87, of Elgin passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004 at Rosewood Care Center. He was born June 18, 1917 in Elgin, the son of Charles and Anna Lorang Elvin. A life long resident of Elgin, he was employed by the Elgin National Watch Co. for 14 years and the Elgin Post Office for 29 years. He started his career with the Post Office as a substitute carrier in January 1949 and held various positions including Foreman of Delivery and Collection, Superintendent of Delivery and Collection, Manager of Mail Processing and Manager of Customer Services. He received a Special Achievement Award for outstanding service in the delivery operation of the post office before retiring July 15, 1977. He was an avid sports fan and enthusiastic bowler and golfer. A life long traveler, he visited all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and traveled overseas. In 1977, he began traveling to California each winter and for ten years, was a volunteer for the National Park Service in Death Valley, California, a place that held a special fascination for him. He was beloved by his extended family and will be dearly missed.
He was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Plato Center and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #799 of Elgin.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Broeker Elvin; two daughters, Patricia Ann Elvin of Elgin and Linda Elvin (Douglas Kelley) of San Jose, California; two grandchildren, Brett and Kyla Kelley; and a sister, Iris Garrelts of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Robert in infancy and LeRoy Elvin.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 4 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin with Pastors Paul Meyers and Calvin Culpepper officiating. Visitation is at the funeral home beginning at 3 PM the same day. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 41W170 Russell Rd., Plato Center, IL, 60170.

Jesse Mason Fry
Jesse Mason Fry, age 85, passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, IL. Jesse died peacefully after a lengthy decline from heart failure.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Yvette E. Fry (Geary) in February, 2004.
He is survived by four children: Garry (Kathryn); Sylvia Reinsalu (Aarne); Jay (Mary Beth) and Deborah Lehr (Bruce); one daughter-in-law, Sandra Fry; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jesse was born January 31, 1919, at Polo, IL, to parents Frederick and Anna (Stein) Fry. He graduated from Polo High Schoolin 1937. On June 4, 1938, he married his wife, Yvette, daughter of Clinton and Emma (Roderick) Geary, at Oregon, IL. Jesse and Yvette celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2003. Jesse was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the "Lucky Seventh" Armored Division. He fought in the 1944-45 European Theater of Operation's campaigns of: Battle of the Bulge (Defense of St. Vith, Belg.), Rhineland, Ruhr Pocket, Central Germany and the North Germany Plain to the Baltic Sea. In 1947, Jesse earned his FAA Private Pilot's license under the G.I. Bill. Following the war, he was employed as a Commercial Teamster and he moved his family to the Elgin area in 1953. Jesse retired after many years with Liberty Trucking Inc. of Elgin and Chicago, as a Liberty Teamster for Illinois Tool Works. Jesse and his wife were members/officers of the Elgin Moose Lodge for over 40 years, as well as members of the Elgin Eagles Club, and the Elgin VFW.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, August 7, 2004, at Laird Funeral Home, 310 South State Street, Elgin, IL. There will be visitation at 12:00 p.m. and a memorial service following at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be private at a later date.

Fern E. Nielsen
Fern E. Nielsen, 81, of Elgin passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2004 in her home. She was born November 11, 1922 in OK the daughter of William and Alta Murley Frey. She had been a resident of Elgin for most her life. She had been employed by the Elgin National Watch Co. in Elgin.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elgin.
Surviving are her two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Nielsen of Elgin and Mary (Jeff) Fulin of Elgin; one son, Carl Nielsen of Elgin; two grandchildren, Kyle and Brenna Fulin; one sister, Bonnie Jeffries of Carmen, OK.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ellsworth Nielsen; two brothers, Virgil and Billie Frey.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 7, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Elgin with Rev. Mike Frantz officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services in the church. Memorials may be given to the family for the care of Carl Nielsen.
