Sylvia Nesbit Gnuechtel
Oxford, Wisconsin - Sylvia went to be with her Heavenly Father on July 28, 2004. Even when the effects of Alzheimers were clearly evident, she did not lose her deep and abiding faith. She left our sight with the same quiet dignity and grace that she exhibited during her entire lifetime.
Born March 25, 1923 in Dover, England, Sylvia grew up loving and trusting in the Lord and all His mercies. Her grandfather was the Revered at St. Mary's Church in Hucknall, England. In fact, she had aspired to become a nun, until she met a man who changed all that, sharing such a love that she would eventually cross the Atlantic Ocean with him.
Sylvia met the love of her life, Hermann, who at the time was a POW in England. They married on April 17, 1948. They then traveled to Canada with their young son to create a new life for themselves after World War II. There in Canada, she and Hermann raised four more children, until 1969, when they moved to Upper Michigan to begin yet another new life as owners of a small gas station and store. She retired with her husband in a home that they built themselves and spent many years enjoying the beauty of the Upper Peninsula with many friends. One of her greatest joys was to watch the Air National Guard practice sessions flying overhead, and through the years she spent many hours loving and following their progress and journeys.
She and Hermann moved to Oxford, Wisconsin in 1996 to be closer to their children and had many happy times with friends over Senior Citizen's lunches. She was an avid reader, having read volumes of books in her lifetime, as well as reading to all her children. She loved her Bible readings, as was evidenced by her reading of her "one-year" Bible for ten years straight. Only when the effects of her disease became apparent, did her love of of reading decrease. Along with her love of reading, Sylvia was passionate about music as well, and loved to play the organ at her local church in Oxford.
Sylvia not only had physical beauty, but had an inward beauty and joy, that all who knew her loved and adored her. Her sweet and gentle ways were always evident, and have been passed along to her children and grandchildren.
preceded in death by her loving husband Hermann, she is survived by her five children to include Fred (Helen) Gnuechtel of Austin, TX, Herman (Donna) Gnuechtel of Hampshire, IL, Chris (Steve) Hanson of Appleton, WI, Dr. Michael (Phyllis) Gnuechtel of Kerrville, TX, and Ruth Gnuechtel (Stan Forrester) of Batavia, IL. Additionally, she is survived by 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.
The family is especially grateful for the loving care that Sylvia received at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Elgin, IL, and the friendships established while there. A special thank you to the compassionate care she received from the hospice staff at VITAS.
"We are comforted to know that our mom is now living in the eternal fullness of both her body and soul in Heaven, and that someday we will all be reunited with both our parents."
Visitation for Sylvia Nesbit Gnuechtel will be held from 10 AM to 1 PM Saturday, August 14, at the James A. O'Connor Funeral Home, 11603 E. Main St., Huntley. Graveside services will follow at the St. Charles Borromeo cemetery in Hampshire. A light luncheon will follow. Funeral Services will be held in Oxford, WI, at 6 PM Friday, August 13, at the Oxford Bible Church.
