Edmund C. Provost
Edmund C. Provost, 87, of Carpentersville died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at the Heritage Manor of Elgin. He was born on September 20, 1916 in Houghton, Michigan, the son of Desiree and Jennie (nee Bussier) Provost. Ed was a resident of the Carpentersville area for 49 years and a former 25 year employee of the Carpentersville Post Office where he worked as a letter carrier. He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the Military Police. Ed was a very active member of the Dundee Township Senior Citizens Organization, the 50 Plus Club and a faithful Spring Hill Mall Walker. He was a former member of the Dundee Dandies Square Dancers Club and the Willow Lake Estates Swingsters Square Dancing Club. He was a long time member of St. Monica Catholic Church of Carpentersville.
Ed leaves behind his loving family, Robert (Patricia) Provost of South Barrington, Ruth (Randall) Helm of Decatur, IL and Mary (Darryl) Helin of East Dundee; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren, all of whom he was very proud of. He was looking forward to the addition of another great grandchild in October and another in early 2005. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 52 years, Margaret A. Lohenry Provost of October 17, 1998, they married on September 1, 1945; four brothers; and a grandson, Kevin Mark Provost on December 8, 2002.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 9:15 AM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee to St. Monica Church of Carpentersville for Mass at 10 AM with the Rev. Uriel Lopez, Pastor, Officiating. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 from 4 to 8 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Please omit flowers, Massed would be appreciated or memorials to either St. Monica Church, Carpentersville, the Dundee Township Senior Center, Carpentersville or to VITAS Hospice.

Jesus J. Silva
Jesus J. Silva, 73, of Elgin died Thursday, September 2, 2004 at Centegra Medical Center, McHenry.
Jesus was preceded in death by an infant son, Jesus in 1955.
Jesus is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Felisitas; five children, Teresa (Eliezer) Alejandres, Jorge (Irma) Silva, Juan (Anna) Silva, Rosalba (Amancio) Villalovos and Ramon Silva; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Enrique (Enedina) Silva of Chicago and Alfonso Silva also of Chicago; two sisters, Socorro Silva of Jalisco, Mexico and Rosario (Reyes) Linares also of Jalisco; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at 4 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elgin with Fr. Manuel officiating. Visitation will follow at the O'Connor-Leetz Funeral Home, Elgin from 6 to 9 PM. Burial will be Friday in Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico. For more information, please contact 847-741-1400.

Catherine Harwood
Catherine Harwood, 86, of Elgin passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
She was born Sept. 14, 1914 inBarrington, the daughter of John and Jeanette Wampach Wolfe.
She had been a resident of the Elgin area all of her life. She was a graduate of Elgin High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elgin.
Survivors include two grandsons, John Thomas Harwood of Elgin and William Charles (Cynthia) Harwood of Crystal Lake; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Brianna Harwood; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Harwood (Denny) Graeff of Marengo.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Fred in 1967; two sons, Philip C. Harwood and Thomas F. Harwood; two sisters, Elsie Niss and Jeanette Walbaum; and five brothers, Edward, Harry, Lawrence, Richard and John Wolfe.
Private graveside services will be Monday in the Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin.
There will be no visitation. Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is in charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Ribbon
Sept. 20, 1924Sept. 6, 2001
He was born on Grace St. in Chicago, the son of William and Susan (Hermes) Ribbon.
He attended Bell Grammar School and Lake View High School. Bob was a caddy at the Mid-City Golf Course earning money to help his family, before being drafted in 1943. Upon his completion of his training with the Army-Air Force, Bob was stationed in Foggia, Italy. It was there while flying a bombing mission that Bob, a tail gunner in a B-17, survived his plane being hit and parachuted to safety, only to be captured and held as a prisoner of war. He was released at the end of World War II. When Bob returned to the United States he began his carpentry apprenticeship at River View Park. Bob was married to Ethel in 1950 and joined the Chicago Police Dept. in 1954. He achieved the rank of Sargent. Bob and Ethel moved from Chicago to Bartlett in Oct. of 1964 supporting his family with his police duties and carpentry work. Bob retired from the Chicago Police Dept. in 1980 and began working for the Village of Bartlett at Bartlett Hills Golf Course. He loved his John Deere tractor and flying with his dear friend Dave Piper. Bob served as past commander of the Bell Park American Legion Post 1088 for 49 yrs. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11018, the Fraternal Order of Police, the German American Police Association and the Caterpillar Parachute Club.
Bob is survived by two brothers, Allen (Natalie) Ribbon of Wheeling and William (Jean) Ribbon of Cary; five children, Linda (Jim) Webster of Ocala, Fla., Susan (Kevin) Carmony of Seattle, Wash., Reid (Beth) Ribbon of Elgin, Diane (Klaus) Ficzko of Bartlett and Victoria (Robert) Wallace of Bartlett; five grandchildren, Robert Mortensen, Maribeth and Amy Ribbon, Lily and Rachel Carmony; a great-granddaughter, Isabella D. Ribbon; and the precious friendship of the Piper family.
In addition to his parents, he waspreceded in death by his wife, Ethel; a brother, Richard; a daughter, Vanessa; and two grandsons, Timothy and Brett.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Monday in the Countryside Funeral Home, 950 S. Bartlett Rd. (at Stearns Rd.), Bartlett. Interment will be in Bartlett cemetery.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m., Sunday in the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11018, Bartlett.

Ruth M. Althen
Ruth M. Althen, age 82, of Elgin, IL. passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin. She was born August 7, 1920 in Buckley, Illinois to William and Laura E. (Weisenbarn) Steinmann.
She was a homemaker and she was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Women of the Moose, Elgin Chapter 610.
Survivors include two sons, Charles W. (Della) Althen of Salisbury, NC. and Jerry L. Althen of Elgin; a daughter, Susan M. (John) Borris of Dallas, OR; a brother, Elmer Steinmann of Elgin; two grandsons, Michael (Terra) Borris of Dallas, OR. and Robert (Candace) Borris of Salem, OR; and a great-grandchild, Alyssa Borris.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John L. Althen, whom she married on September 14, 1940 and who passed away on June 28, 1995; and two brothers, Wilbert and Roy.
Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at 12 Noon at the Wait-Ross-Allanson Chapel, 51 Center Street, Elgin, Illinois 60120. Rev. Thomas Niermann of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be after 10:00 AM on Tuesday until the time of service at Noon at the Wait Ross Allanson Chapel.
Memorials may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Society.

Lela Fern Barth
Lela Fern Barth, 86, of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away August 31, 2002. Born August 12, 1916 in Mable, Minnesota, she moved to Florida in June of 2002. She was a member of the Women's Guild and a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in West Dundee, Illinois.
Lela is survived by her husband, Howard; two sons, Roland Barth of Port Charlotte, FL., and Gerald Barth of South Elgin, IL.; a sister, June Oakes of Mable, MN.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and she was preceded in death by her grandson, Randy.
A Memorial Service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in West Dundee, IL., at 10:30 AM Friday, September 13, 2002. Burial will be at River Valley Memorial Gardens in W. Dundee at 11:30 AM. Luncheon will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in West Dundee, IL.

Darlene JoAnn Martin
Darlene JoAnn Martin, 71, of Elgin passed away Thursday, September 5, 2002 in Sherman Hospital. She was born July 28, 1931 in Chicago and was the daughter of John and Julia (nee Jisa) Svoboda.
Dari attended the University of Illinois and married James L. Martin on October 31, 1953. She was a loving wife and mother and devoted her life to her family and friends. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Elgin.
Surviving are her husband, James L. Martin; four sons, Steven Martin of Chicago, Daniel Martin of Round Lake Beach, IL., Paul Martin of Chicago and John (Christine) Martin of Aurora, IL; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Robert; one sister, Lorraine (Fran) Welch of Morris, IL.; two brothers, Ronald Svoboda of Sonoma CA. and Richard (Lee) Svoboda of Arlington, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister-in-law, Lillian "Kit" Svoboda.
Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 9, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery. Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin on Sunday from 4:00-8:00 PM and then on Monday at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 397 Fulton St., Elgin, IL. 60120 or to The Salvation Army, 316 Douglas Ave., Elgin, IL. 60120.

Dorothy A. "Hon" Gieseke nee Wolff
Dorothy A. "Hon" Gieseke nee Wolff, 83, 49 year resident of Wheaton, died Saturday, September 6, 2003 suddenly at her home. She was born May 11, 1920 in Elgin, IL, where she was raised and married her husband, LaVerne on January 22, 1944. She worked at Elgin National Watch Co. for 11 years. She and her husband purchased Wheaton Laundry & Cleaners in 1954 where she worked every day until her death. She was an avid bowler, loved to ice skate, and enjoyed gardening. She devoted her life to her loving husband, children and grandchildren, and her many relatives and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, LaVerne, her two sons: David (Dolores) and Tim (Ann), her grandchildren: Matthew, Karl, Claire, Kurt, Josh, Adam, and Jason; her siblings: Robert (Nancy) and Thomas Wolff, Charlotte "Midge" (Wesley) Meyer, Howard (Yvonne) Wolff, and Margaret (Ed) DeVries.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Wolff, a sister Lucille Schuett, a brother-in-law Tim Schuett, and a sister-in-law Marge Wolff.
Visitation Tuesday 3-9 p.m. at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton (1 block east of Naperville Rd.) Funeral service Wednesday 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment in family plot.

George Kastner
George Kastner, 81, of Elgin passed away Saturday, September 6, 2003 in Provena St. Joseph Hospital. He was born November 19, 1921 in Friendship, WI and was the son of Frank and Anna (Novy) Kastner. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1940 and joined the USMC that same year. He served from June 19, 1940 until March 1, 1965 and retired with the rank of GYSGT. He was a USMC survivor from the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown when it was sunk during the battle of Midway during World War II. After leaving the Marine Corps., he worked as a Metropolitan Life Insurance representative until retirement. He was an avid sportsman with golf being his favorite pastime. He was a charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church and was past council president. He was past Commandant of the Elgin Marine League. He was past president of the Elgin Life Underwriters Association.
Surviving are two sons, Craig "Red" (Stacey) Kastner of Ft. Pierce, FL and Mark Kastner of Elgin, one daughter, Susan Porter of Northbrook, IL, grandchildren Jessie, Kristin, Will and Sarah, one sister, Blanche McCue of Jackson, MI.
He was preceded by his parents, twin brother Milo at age 4 and one son, Michael.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Patricia Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood, IL. Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Annette Null
Annette Null, 55, of Carpentersville passed away in Kentucky from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. She was born January 22, 1948 in Chicago, the daughter of Constantine "Gus" and Eileen Leta Nikas. She had been a resident of Carpentersville since 1978 and had been employed by Grayhill, Inc. for 25 years.
Surviving are her two sons, William E. (Julie) Null of Algonquin and John M. Null of Lake in the Hills, her fiance, Leonard Urban of Carpentersville, two grandchildren, William and Mya, her mother, Eileen Nikas of Chicago, her brother, John (Rosemary) Nikas of Park Ridge, two step sons, Jeff Urban of Carpentersville and Anthony (Lea) Urban of Wisconsin and her former husband, William Null of Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 9 at 8 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., West Dundee. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the time of services in the funeral home.

Sylvia C. Parsons
Sylvia C. Parsons, 61, of Elgin passed away Thursday, September 4, 2003 in Sherman Hospital. She was born November 15, 1941 in Chicago and was the daughter of Sidney and Sylvia Schuyler. She had been a resident of Elgin since 1992. She and her husband owned +POS (Parsons Officials Supplies) in Schaumburg. She was a member of the Elgin Historical Society, the American Hosta Society, and was an election judge.
Surviving are her husband, Charles O. Parsons, one daughter, Rachel (Scott) Paccagnini of Marengo, IL, one son, Daniel Parsons of Elgin, one sister, Gerry "Sis" Kaestner of Clarksville, IN, one brother, Dennis Schuyler of Louisville, KY and her dog, Tramp.
preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were private in the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin with private interment. No visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Richard L. Callahan
Richard L. Callahan, 51, of Elgin passed away Sunday, September 5, 2004 in Edwards Hospital in Naperville after a 16-month battle with cancer. He was was born March, 17, 1953 in Denver, CO and was the son of George and Lucille Callahan. He had been a resident of Elgin and Dundee area for the past 27-years. He was employed by Hoffer Plastics in South Elgin for the past 23-years. He loved fishing, cooking, and riding on his motorcycle. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Elgin.
He is survived by his wife, Paula; three daughters, Sara (Matt) Balgeman, of Bartlett, IL, Stephanie Callahan, of Aurora, IL, and Megan Callahan, of Elgin; one granddaughter, Madison Balgeman; his parents, of Elgin; and two brothers, David (Renata) Callahan, of Arlington Heights, IL, and Daniel (Linda) Callahan, of Geneva, IL.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Sandy Callahan.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10:00am in St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will be in Washington Reformed Presbyterian Cemetary on Highland Ave., Elgin. Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin, in Thursday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and then on Friday at the church from 9:30am until time of mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for educational purposed or to Edwards Hospital Oncology Department in Naperville.

Secundino Ocasio Carrillo Sr.
Secundino Ocasio Carrillo Sr., 73, of Elgin, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 4, 2004. He was born November 16, 1930 in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, the son of Ramon and Provedencia Carrillo.
Secundino had been a resident of Elgin for many years, retiring from Main Steel in Wheeling, Illinois.
Survivors include: 11 children, Enrique, Jesus, Secundino Jr., Miguel, Maria, Lydia, Elba, Ramonita, Zoraida, Norma and Elena; 23 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; loving nephew Juan Gonzalez Jr. We will all miss you Pa!
preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Delia.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 272 Division St., Elgin. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held today from 4:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin.

Doris C. Coats
Doris C. Coats, 89, of South Elgin passed away Sunday, September 5, 2004 in Sherman Hospital. She was born February 18, 1915 in South Elgin and was the daughter of Herman A. and Alma Zierke. She had been a resident of South Elgin all her life and had been employed by the Elgin National Watch Co. for 13 years and later assisted her husband operate Coats Custom Kitchens in South Elgin. She was a member of the South Elgin Community United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, James (Darlene) Coats of South Elgin; two step grandchildren, Sean and Jason Kennedy; and two sisters, Gladys Palm of Woodstock, IL and Shirley (Robert) Lorenz of Carpentersville, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ellsworth on November 7, 2002; and a brother, Roy Zierke.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 PM in the South Elgin Community United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Wise officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St. Elgin on Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM and then on Wednesday at the church from 12:30 PM to time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the South Elgin Community Methodist Church.
