Gertrude R. Pennock
Gertrude (Trudy) Pennock, age 78, passed away November 6, 2004 in Zephyrhills, Florida. Trudy retired from the Elgin State Mental Hospital and moved to Florida in 1989.
She is survived by her son, Steven (Joanne) Pennock; her daughter, Pamela (Greg) Gottberg; and her grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Beth, Josh, Brooke, and Becky. Also her two great granddaughters, Dezra and Natalie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, her long time companion Donald Frisch, and her former husband, Maurice Pennock.

Odessa David "Dess" Ross
Odessa David "Dess" Ross, 65, of Elgin, passed away Monday, November 15, 2004, in Sherman Hospital, after a long battle with cancer. He was born March 18, 1939, in Cairo, IL to Gertrude and Clarence Ross Sr.
Odessa graduated from Sumner High School, Cairo, IL in 1957. He was employed by Elgin Mental Health Center as a Caseworker from 1958 until his retirement in 1995. During his employment, he served as a Chief Steward and contract negotiator for AFSCME Local 26, and was also chairperson of the Credit Committee for the EMHC Employees Credit Union. Following his retirement he was employed by Initial Security. He was an owner in the harness horse racing industry and was an avid bowler. Odessa enjoyed watching all sports and never hesitated to voice his opinion of the outcome.
To cherish his memories are his devoted wife Beverly (Smith) Ross, whom he married on March 7, 1959; a son, David Ross of Milwaukee, WI; a daughter, Debra Ross of Elgin; two granddaughters, Dionna (A.C.) Span and Krysta Hall; three great-granddaughters, McKayla, KaMarie and Karissa Hall-Lee, all of Elgin; three brothers, John Sledd of St. Louis, MO, Clarence A. Ross Jr. of Calumet Park, IL and Moses Ross of Waukegan, IL; four sisters, Bertha (William) Vaughan of Batavia, IL, Martha Ross of Calumet Park, IL, Mary (Louis) Ford of Aurora, IL and Karon Jean (B.J.) Smith of Elgin, IL and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Darryl; a brother, Elvin and a sister, Carolyn Brazier.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 22, 2004, in the St. James A.M.E. Church, 1100 Summit St., Elgin at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery, Elgin.
Visitation will be held Monday in the Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services in the church.

Helen M. Walker
Helen M. Walker, 69, of Carpentersville died Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at Sherman Hospital, Elgin. She was born on December 11, 1934 in Hopkinsville, KY, the daughter of Ross Ewing and Louise Guy.
She was a former 27 year employee of Revcor Manufacturing in Carpentersville prior to retirement.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Thelbert Walker, Sr., whom she married on August 23, 1952; four children, Wanda Casteel of South Elgin, Karen L. (Bobby) McCoy, Thelbert Walker, Jr., and James (Laura) Walker all of Carpentersville; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, William (Nancy) Guy, Flora Honaker, Manuel (Cheryl Guy, Warren (Teresa) Guy, Margaret (Dennis) Smith, Robert Guy, Jerry (Carol) Guy, James Guy, and Nolan Guy; her brother-in-law, Odell (Arlene) Walker and many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Debra Walker.
Funeral services will be on Saturday at Noon in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the Dundee Twp. East cemetery, East Dundee. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services in the funeral home.

Loretta Wren
Loretta Wren, age 76, of Carpentersville died November 17, 2004. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 30, 1928.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan G. (Craig) Edwards of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Linda L. Wren of Louisville, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew Edwards; one brother, Gerald Rugs of Warsaw, Indiana; three sisters, Shirley Reinhart of Romeoville, Illinois, Joan McHaney of Little Rock, Arkansas, Dian Gleason of Pontiac, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cameron; her parents; and an infant daughter.
Visitation Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Community Funeral Home, located on Rt. 25, between Rts. 72 and 68, East Dundee. Services Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Community Funeral Home. Burial will be at Dundee East cemetery. Memorials to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation would be appreciated.

Betty Lou Hillner
Betty Lou Hillner, 77, of Marengo, former 40 year resident of Carpentersville, died Friday, November 19, 2004 at the Florence Nursing Home in Marego. She was born November 25, 1926 in Spring Valley, IL. She was the daughter of John and Darlene (nee Culver) Brandstatter. Betty Lou was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo and a member of the choir. She was also a former many year member and choir member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and the Zion United Church of Christ both of Carpentersville. Betty Lou worked as a professional Secretary and was a member of the Professional Secretaries Association. She was a member of the Dundee VFW #2298 Ladies Auxiliary in West Dundee and also the Dundee Township League of Women Voters.
She is survived by her son, Kevin (Lisa) Hillner of Marengo; her four granddaughters, Kristin, Brittany, Lori and Madison, all of Marengo; her sister, Lois (Frank) Etheridge of Mendota; her brothers, Jack (Nora) Brandstatter of Hennipin, IL, Ralph (Joan) Brandstatter of Florida, and Don (Nancy) Brandstatter of Varna, IL; many nieces, nephews and good and faithful friends also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard E. Hillner on November 18, 1994; her grandson, Erik Hillner in 1981; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Helen.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 22, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. The Rev. Dr. Elaine Eachus, friend and Betty Lou's former pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee.

Larry W. Applehoff
Larry W. Applehoff, 58 of Elgin passed away Sunday November 17, 2002 in Sherman Hospital Elgin. He was born July 7, 1944 in Elgin and was the son of Fred and Ruth (Jeschke) Applehoff. Larry was a graduate of Elgin High School in 1962, and DeVry Tech in 1964. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and played the saxophone in the 5th Army Band. Larry worked at Motorola for 34 years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Applehoff of Elgin; his sister, Joyce (Bill) Powers of Elgin; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday at 8:00 P.M. in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, with the Rev. Thomas O'Connor officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 P.M. until the time of services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Marene L. Batt
Marene L. Batt, 85 of West Dundee died Monday Nov. 18, 2002 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin. She was born in Elgin on June 8, 1917, the daughter of George F. & Emma (nee Bartelt) Batt.
Miss Batt was a life long resident of the Dundee area, a life long member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of West Dundee and taught Sunday School there for 23 years. She was a former many year employee of the Elgin National Watch Co.
She is survived by her Brother: Ralph (Harriett) Batt of Lac Du Flambeau, Wisc. (1) Niece: Pat (Don) McQueen of East Dundee (1) Nephew: Dennis F. Batt of Yorkville (8) Great Nieces & Nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial Funeral Services will be held on Saturday November 23, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee. The Rev. Steve Simon, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be private. Please omit flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, West Dundee. The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Koath
Robert E. Koath, 69, of Algonquin, formerly of Dundee, died Monday, November 18, 2002 at his home.
He was born on May 27, 1933 in Chicago, the son of Edward and Cecelia M. (Cummings) Koath. He was a 44 year resident of the Dundee-Algonquin areas. He was a former 38 year employee of Illinois Bell Telephone Company. He was a Korean War Veteran having served in the U.S. Army. A member of the First United Methodist Church of West Dundee, and a former trustee and choir member.
He is survived by his wife, Grace (nee Christofferson) Koath. They married on September 12, 1953. Two daughters: Karen Koath of Algonquin; Margaret (Joseph) Doane of Poplar Grove. Five grandchildren: Timothy Schaden, Elizabeth Schaden both of Crystal Lake, Monica Doane of Poplar Grove, Alicia Doane of Florida, Erin Doane of Poplar Grove. Two sisters: Lorraine (William) Burke of Tinley Park and Helen (Alan) Hoag of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter: Paula Jean Koath in 1963 and two brothers: Edward and John.
Funeral services will be on Friday, November 22, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, West Dundee. The Rev. Eun-Hye Choi, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be on Thursday in the Miller Funeral Home from 4 - 9:00 p.m. and on Friday in the church from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of west Dundee.

Luisa Valdivia
Luisa Valdivia, 84, of Elgin, IL died Monday, November 18 at her home. Maria Luisa Valdivia was born February 12, 1918 in Ocotlan, Jalisco, Mexico to Jose Encarnacion and Maria (Bravo) Prado.
Survived by her son, Miguel (Guadalupe) Tamayo of Elgin; four daughters, Juanita Lesperance, Anna Maria Castillo, Baudelia (Peter) Padilla all of Elgin, Aurora (Antonio) Prado of Bartlett; 26 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Fernando whom she married in 1954 and who preceded her in 1974.
Funeral services Friday, November 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. John Earl will officiate. Interment Mt. Hope cemetery. Mary Ellen Whalen
Mary Ellen Whalen, 71 of Elgin passed away Sunday, November 17, 2002 at her home. She was born July 24, 1931 in Oak Park, Illinois the daughter of William J. and Catherine Cunningham Sweeney.
She was a graduate of Trinity High School in River Forest and Rosary College in River Forest. She had been a resident of Elgin since 1968. She married James A. Whalen on January 12, 1957.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Elgin. She was a member of the Searchers. She was a former board member of the Elgin Symphony League.
Surviving are four daughters; Barbara Whalen (Donald Cherry) of Villa Park, Ann Whalen of Chicago, Jennifer Whalen (Jad Kessuvan) of Elgin, Margaret Whalen Stec (Michael Stec) of Oak Park, four grandchildren; Catherine Kessuvan, Liam Cherry, Maximilian Stec and Mary Ellen Kessuvan, one sister, Ann Sullivan of Oak Park, one brother, William Sweeney of North Brunswick, N.J.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James A. Whalen in 2000.
Funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elgin with Rev. Edward Seisser officiating. Burial will be in Queen of Heaven cemetery, Hillside. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 3:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of mass in the church. Karine E. Anderson
Karine E. Anderson, 84, Elgin, IL passed away November 8, 2003 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin. She was born November 24, 1918 in Galesburg, IL and was the daughter of John and Augusta Anderson. She was a Veteran and served in the U.S. Army. Karine graduated from the University of Illinois with a BA and MA in social work. She had worked as a social worker in the School District U-46 many years prior to her retirement. Karine was a vital part in the lives of her nieces, nephews, and family. She loved traveling, music, art, and reading. She left us with many wonderful memories. Member of the First United Methodist Church of Elgin and the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority for Women Educators.
Survivors include her niece Joyce (Howard) King of Okemos, MI, nephews David (Susan) Martinson of Hillsborough, CA, Kenneth (Susan) Schulz of Chapel Hill, NC, James (Maria) Schulz of Atlanta, GA, great nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Elizabeth, John, David, Marnie, Cameron and Kirsten.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Elgin, with Rev. Dr. Larry Pickens officiating. Memorials may be made to the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority Endowment Fund for a high school student going into the education field or the Shop & Share Inc. Laird Funeral Homes, Elgin and West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Mae Beers
Shirley Mae Beers, 71, of Crystal Lake died Monday, November 17, 2003 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
She was born in Chicago on July 2, 1932 to Edward and Martha (Scheidat) Schirmer.
She married Ralph Beers on October 13, 1951 in Crystal Lake. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake where she was baptized, confirmed and married . She shared her love for music by teaching piano for over 40 years. She was a member of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, Crystal Lake Bridge Club, Green Twig Garden Club, a Ravinia Representative, a Woodstock Opera House Representative and a member of the Illinois Piano Teachers Association.
She is survived by a son, Robert (Kathy) Beers; and a daughter, Linda (Vic) Gagnon; four grandchildren, Gretchen (Mickey) Tennant, David and Matthew Gagnon and Christina Beers; and a great grandson, Milton Howell Tennant IV.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; and an infant daughter, Laurie Ellen.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 20, 2003 form 5 to 8 PM at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 Terra Cotta Ave, Crystal Lake, IL, 60014 and on Friday, November 21, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 178 McHenry Ave in Crystal Lake from 10 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11 AM with Rev, Ed Bergen officiating. Interment will be in Union cemetery in Crystal Lake.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name would be appreciated to the American Diabetes Association, 2323 N. Mayfair Rd., Suite 502, Wauwatosa, WI, 53226. For info, call the funeral home at 815-459-1760.
