Dr. Thompson was raised in a large family on a central Minnesota farm. At the age of 17 he enrolled in the college division of Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago. After two years, he transferred to Wheaton College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in music. He then returned to the seminary to complete his Master of Divinity degree while serving as pastor of the Oak Forest Baptist Church. The focus of his life changed in the fall of 1953 when he accepted a "temporary" position as music instructor and director of choruses at Northern Baptist Seminary and College. In 1963, the Seminary moved from Chicago to Oakbrook, and the college moved to Elgin where it was renamed "Judson College". In 1964, he made the difficult decision to leave the seminary and put his energies into the College, where he continued until his retirement in 1997. "Dr. Ed", as he was affectionately called, will be remembered most for his work with the Judson College Choir, which toured extensively in the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. Simultaneously with his professorship at Judson, Dr. Thompson was Minister of Music at the North Shore Baptist Church in Chicago for seven years and First Baptist Church of Elgin for 22 years. After retirement, he served for two years as interim pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church of Elgin until ill health prevented his continuing.
