Francis B. Cummings
Francis B. Cummings, 95, of Elgin, a former long time resident of St. Charles, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin.
He was born Feb. 19, 1905 in Geneva, the son of William and Tillie (Holmberg) Cummings.
A member of Local 501 Plumbers and Pipefitters, Mr. Cummings had been employed for several years with Wagner Plumbing in St. Charles. He served as past Governor of the St. Charles Moose Lodge #1368.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances May (Kenneth) Christensen of Green Valley, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Delores "Ann" Cummings of Elgin; ten grandchildren, Jan (Anthony Hardt) Christensen of Seattle, Wash., Jill (Tim) Hurtley of Portland, Ore., Frank (Connie) Cummings of Mapleton, Ill., Debbie (Dave) Bloch of Sycamore, Cathy (Bill) Mundt of Waco, Ga., William (Jackie) Cummings, Jr. of Markham, Ill., Robert (Connie) Cummings of Lansing, Kansas, John (Camelia)Cummings of Frankfort, Ill., Don (Debby) Cummings of Hazelcrest, Ill. and Cyndi (Jim) Littledale of Elgin; 30 great-grandchildren; 15 great great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob (Elaine) Cummings of California; and a sister,Mildred Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Augusta Cummings on Jan. 8, 1998; a son, William A. Cummings Sr. in 1985; a great-grandson, David Cummings, Jr.; and four brothers, Gordy, Don, Budd and Jim Cummings.
A Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Friday, February 16, 2001 at the Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St., St. Charles. Burial will be in Union cemetery, St. Charles.

Pearl J. Kittinger
Pearl J. Kittinger, 92, of Elgin, formerly of Philadelphia, Penn., passed away Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 at the Alden-Poplar Creek Health Center, Hoffman Estates.
She was born Aug. 19, 1908 in Conshohocken, Penn., the daughter of Eli and Margaret Grill Shaw.
She had been a resident of Pennsylvania all of her life before moving to Elgin in 1997. She was a member of the Green Lane United Methodist Church in Roxborough, Penn. She was a volunteer with the Salvation Army Women's Auxilliary in Philadelphia. After moving to Elgin she joined the First United Methodist Church of Elgin and was a member of the United Methodist Women and Searchers.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean (Paul) Stowell of Elgin; and her grandchildren, Scott (DyAnne Korda) Stowell of Stevens Point, Wis. and Rev. Kimberly J. (Glen Bauer) Stowell of Coloma, WI.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland D. Kittinger in 1982.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church, Elgin, the Rev. Thomas Walker officiating. Burial will be in West Laurel Hill cemetery, Bala-Cynwyd, Penn.
Visitation will be at the time of services in the church on Wednesday.
Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Joseph L. Panella
Joseph L. Panella, 83, of Willow Lakes Estates, Elgin passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 in Sherman Hospital, Elgin.
He was born Aug. 8, 1917 in Chicago, the son of Angelo and Rose Panella.
He had been a resident of Chicago for most of his life and had been a resident of Elgin since 1990. He was a Veteran serving in the Army during WWII.
He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, West Dundee. He was also a member of the Social Committee and a member of the Kitchen Band at Willow Lakes Estates.
Survivors include two daughters, Joanne (George) Biallas of Yorktown, Va. and Patricia (Myles) McEvilly of Crystal Lake; five grandchildren, David (Melissa) Biallas, Joel Biallas, Katherine McEvilly, Holly (Barry) Stout and Zachary McEvilly; a great-granddaughter, Lydia Biallas; and a sister, Ann Straub of Norridge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Killian Panella; and a brother, Frank Panella.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Wednesday in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, West Dundee, the Rev. William Antillon officiating. Burial will be in St. Adalbert cemetery, Niles.
Visitation will be 3-9 p.m., Tuesday in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass in the church.
Memorials may be made to Marklund Children's Home, 290 Town Center, Glendale Heights, IL. 60139.

Thomas L. Real
Thomas L. Real, 53, of Margate, Fla., formerly of Elgin, died unexpectedly at home on Feb. 9, 2001.
He was born in Elgin on June 1, 1938, the son of Margaret and William Real.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; a son, Scott; a daughter, Debbie; and two sisters, Mary (Walter) Witte of Green Valley, Ariz. and Marjorie (William)Snellgrove of Bartlett.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the family at 6770 Royal Palm Blvd., Margate, FL 33063.

Eugene H. "Gene" SalzmannEugene H. "Gene" Salzmann, 78, of Elgin, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2001 at Veterans Home in Manteno, IL.
He was born September 4, 1922, the son of William and Sondra Salzmann.
Eugene was a resident of Carpentersville and Elgin for over 45 years. He was a veteran of World War II, ranking as First Lieutenant. He served in the 9th Air Corp as a lead bombardier-navigator on over 60 missions. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for taking out an obstacle in the path of Gen. Hodge's First Army by pinpoint bombing. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and an active member of the Dundee V.F.W., serving as chaplain, and member of the color guard.
Survivors include his loving wife of 57 year, Mary; three sons, Mark (Diane) of Elgin, Eugene Jr. (Dawn) of Elgin, Thomas (Kathy) of St. Charles; four daughters, Glenna Jones of Hampshire, Marilyn (Terry) Diede, Cynthia (George) Martucci of Elgin, and Andrea (Christopher) Ecker of South Elgin; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Patricia (Greg) Herbert of Elgin; one brother, Ronald (Arlene) of Alford, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kenneth in 1991; three brothers, Jack, Richard and William; 2 sisters, Pauline and Rosemary.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, February 15 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 215 Thomas More Drive, Elgin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Fay Crawford Sheldon
Fay Crawford Sheldon, 97, a 72 year resident of St. Charles, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at Provena Pineview Care Center, St. Charles.
She was born Aug. 13, 1903 in Nashville, Ark., the daughter of Alexander and Anita (Boyden) Crawford.
She was raised in Little Rock, Ark., as a member of an Episcopal minister's family. Her creativeness and artistic ability were evident early in her life. After high school, Fay earned money to attend the Chicago Art Institute by painting and restoring ecclesiastical stations in churches in Little Rock. She continues this work in Chicago while attending the Chicago Art Institute.
On Aug. 7, 1926, she married Archibald M. Sheldon and in 1929 they moved to the Stony Brook Farm west of St. Charles (no called the LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve). Their four children were raised there. As a resident of St. Charles her generosity and creativity were evident in her volunteer activities throughout her life. While the children were students at Evan Shelby Grammar School, she was involved with the PTA and an advocate for the teachers. Several times a year each class was invited for a day on the farm including milk and cookies. Her other roles were Cub Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout leader and eventually Commissioner of the Girl Scouts for St. Charles topping this off with an annual Christmas party for all the Girl Scouts in town.
Because of a lifelong love of books, she served on the St. Charles Public Library Board for many years. In addition, she used her artistic talents to help a variety of charities with art publicity and unique decorations for events. She was a member of the St. Marks Community Hospital Sewing group and the oldest member of the Pottawatomie Garden Club joining in 1930. In her later years, she designed a variety of home and Christmas decorations and eventually created a large collection of hats which were displayed at the Denver University in 1999. She taught classes in both of these fields in the Kane County area.
Survivors include two sons, John A. Sheldon of Roswell, N.M. and Archibald C. Sheldon of Carpentersville; a daughter, Ann S. Osgood of San Rafael, Calif.; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Archibald M. Sheldon in 1963; and a daughter, Louise Ray in 1991.
A Memorial Service will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at the St. Charles Episcopal Church, 994 N. Fifth Ave., St. Charles, the Rev. William R. Nesbit Jr. officiating.
Memorials may be made to the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles, IL. 60174 or to the Pottawatomie Garden Club, 100 S. Third St., St. Charles, IL. 60174.
Arrangements were handled by the Norris Funeral Home, St. Charles.

John Henry Simon
John Henry Simon was born in Carrollton, AL on November 27, 1939 to Webster and Minnie (Horton) Simon and departed this life Sunday, February 11, 2001. He confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Carrollton, AL.
He married Mildred Ferguson on November 3, 1959 in Maywood, IL, whom he leaves to cherish his memory.
Flexonics of Bartlett employed him for 28 years. He previously worked for Hills_McCanna and Kirby Packing.
In addition to his loving wife, he leaves to mourn his father, Webster Simon of Russellville, AL; two sisters, Irene Hill and Betty Blair of Carrollton, AL; a brother, Melvin (Edna) Hicks of Carrollton, AL; two daughters, Debra (Tesfaye) Tewolde of Elgin, IL and Teresa (Raymond) Smith of Plainfield, IL; two sons, John Anthony and Webster Bernard Simon of Elgin, IL; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Olivia Wilson of Elgin, IL and Mrs. Willie Bonner of Carrollton, AL; a brother-in-law, Clark Ferguson, Jr. of Carrollton, AL; ten grandchildren; a great grandchild; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
His mother, Minnie Hicks; maternal grandparents, Peggy and Ida Horton; paternal grandparents, John C. and Roxie Simon; and a sister, Ida Mae Simon preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held at the O'Connor and Homeier Funeral Home, 364 Division St. in Elgin on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 from 5 to 8 PM. On Saturday, February 17, 2001 visitation will be held at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Carrollton, AL from 10 AM until the Funeral Service at 11 AM. Interment will be in Carrollton, AL.

Harold R. Swanson
Harold R. Swanson, 90, of Willow Lake Estates, Elgin died Monday, February 12, 2001 in the Manor Care Center in Elgin.
He was born in Chicago on February 4, 1911, the son of Berger and Anna (nee Benson) Swanson.
He was a 21 year resident of Willow Lake Estates, Elgin. He worked as a commercial artist. He was a former 31 year employee of Chicago Decal Co. He was a World War II Army veteran. He earned the rank of Tech. Sgt. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Disabled Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly E. (nee Maddox) Swanson. They married on July 23, 1947; two sons, Jan (Mary Lynn) Swanson and Lee (Sarah) Swanson, both of St. Charles; five grandchildren, Steve, Michelle, Tim, Pam and Melissa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers.
Funeral Services will be on Wednesday at 2 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee. Burial will follow in the River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 9 PM in the Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee.

Arthur O. Behrens
Arthur O. Behrens, 91, died Friday, February 8, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary "Peggy" Behrens.
The memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Tallahassee. Abbey Funeral Home, 4037 N. Monroe St., Tallahassee, FL 32303 (850-562-1518) is handling arrangements.
A native of Elgin, he had lived in Tallahassee since 1959. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and spent his retirement enjoying Chicago White Sox baseball, Chicago Bears football, and Chicago Blackhawk hockey. He was a devoted Florida State University Seminole fan and a member of the Seminole Boosters.
Other survivors include a son, Fred Behrens and his wife, Cindy; two daughters, Mary Catherine Gerardi and her husband, Jerry; and Eileen Beach and her husband, Tom; a sister, Vera Schump of Elgin; eight grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a wealth of cherished friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More, 900 W. Tallahassee St., Tallahassee, FL 32304 or Big Ben Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.

Donald and Loretta Fahy
A Memorial Service commemorating the lives of Donald and Loretta Fahy will be held on Friday, February 15, 2002 at 3 PM in the First Congregational Church, 417 W. Main Street in West Dundee. Burial will be private.
Donald was born in Chicago on March 6, 1934, the son of Lawrence and Patricia (nee Zutant) Fahy. He died August 24, 2001 at Sherman Westcourt in Elgin. Loretta was born on January 23, 1935, the daughter of Joseph and Julia (nee Pfeiffer) Ebner. She died Thursday, January 31, 2002 at her home.
They are survived by three daughters; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Bernard. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Roseanne Stokes.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to either the American Liver Foundation, 27 E. Monroe, Chicago, IL, 60603 or the Scoliosis Research Society, 6300 N. River Road, Rosemont, IL, 60018. The Miller Funeral Home, West Dundee is in charge of arrangements.
