Emma Jo Gunderson
Emma Jo Gunderson, age 5, of rural St Charles, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Loyola Medical Center, Chicago, where she was taken following a fire at her home. Safe now, in the arms of Jesus, she claims the Easter Promise of her risen Lord in that heavenly place, where the innocence of children is the very essence of His Kingdom.
They are gathering at the Christ Community Church on North Randall Rd., St. Charles, IL on Tuesday, March 8 at 7 PM to celebrate "Emma Jo." Her mom wants no one wearing black that night, just bright colors, Emma's favorites. The more people, the more music, the more prayers and praise--the better. It's like Easter morning for Emma, but her mom also knows that the promise of Easter came at the "cost" of Good Friday. It's something Emma knew too, and that's something her mother wants to be sure everyone understands. "Emma loved Jesus; Jesus loves Emma and Jesus loves all of her friends." In Emma's darkest hour, her mom is sure that Emma was not alone". As in the Bible story about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, (Daniel 3:24-28), Emma's Savior was with her through the fire. The life that could not be saved by human hands was eternally saved by "holy hands." Emma was, and is, Safe in the Arms of Jesus.
Monday night from 4-9 PM, friends are invited to Christ Community Church to share memories of Emma. Amidst tears as well as laughter, they'll have the chance to jot down stories on "Memory Catchers", make banners and paper "love chains," say "good bye" to Emma, and through it all to make their own personal journey from the sorrow of Emma's death, to the celebration of her life - the life she had here, and the life she has now, in heaven. A special Children's Center will be available throughout the evening to help parents and children at visitation. At 5 PM, Bruce Conley will speak, especially to parents and children.
Emma Jo Gunderson was born January 15, 2000 at Delnor Community Hospital, St. Charles, the daughter of Bill and Kim (Turner) Gunderson. She completed a blended family of one brother and two sisters and knit them together with her energy and charm.
Emma was a student at Educare, St. Charles and, of late, had been her father's best stay-at-home student, as he was off work. She was every inch "The Princess" but with a "tom-boy" streak that lead to wild adventures. Intelligent, witty, always scheming and teasing, her tricks earned the nic-name "Stinker Pot". Still, you could not help but love Emma, because Emma so clearly loved everyone. She was always the life of the party, until she dropped from exhaustion. The cuddly, sweet "I-love-you-Emma" would snuggle down while her dreams continued the mayhem she'd planned.
All of these things and countless more will be remembered forever by her survivors. They include her loving parents, Bill and Kim Gunderson of st. Charles; her brother and sisters, Matthew Gunderson of Sandwich, IL, Dana and Kelsey Gunderson, both at home in St. Charles; maternal grandparents, Norman (Shirley) Turner of Plato Center, IL; maternal great-grandmothers, Verna Neimiller of Easton, PA and Jean Hart of Phillipsburg, NJ; paternal grandfather, Norman Gunderson and the late Marilyn Gunderson; her maternal uncle, Kevin (Dawn) Turner of Elburn and their children, Colin and Lindsey; her paternal aunts and uncles, Donna (Tony) DeNardo of St. Charles, IL and their children, Cara (Mike) Williams of Chicago, IL, Melissa DeNardo of Arizona, Larry (Kate) Gunderson of Batavia, IL and their family, Jack Paul and Wade Gunderson.
In addition Emma leaves her many friends and playmates. In their lives, is her legacy of "forever friendship," faith and fun.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Imagin Campaign/New Kidsworld at Christ Community Church. Please be specific when writing checks. Make checks payable to "Christ Community Church. On the "Memo Line" write: "Gunderson Memorial".
For more information about Emma's services, support assistance and resources, contact Christ Community Church at 513-7500 or Conley Funeral Home at 1-800-8-CONLEY. Or visit at www.ccclife.com or www.conleycare.com.
