Annette Davis,
33-year library board member

Visitation for Annette C. Davis, 87, of Bradley, will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradley, where she was a member.
Entombment will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery in Kankakee.
Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation.
She died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, after a short illness.
Mrs. Davis retired from Shapiro Developmental Center in 1985 after 18 years of service. She had been a cook at Bradley East School and had also worked at Amberg File and Index and the Bear Brand.
Mrs. Davis served on the Bradley Public Library Board for 33 years and as treasurer for 22 years. She was honored in 1994 by the trustees and board president for her years of valuable service to the library.
She was born Dec. 18, 1915, in Bourbonnais, the daughter of Euclid and Isabelle Gadbois Brais.
Her husband, Bernard Davis, whom she married Sept. 2, 1939, at Maternity BVM Catholic Church, died Sept. 19, 2002.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Juanita Davis of Bradley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Elmer McAleer and Susan and Rex Bell, all of Kankakee; one sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Vernon Hamann of Bradley; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Robert and Dennis; three brothers, Phillip, Victor and Paul Brais; and one sister, Marie Leone, are deceased.
She was a member of the Moose and a Bradley Lioness.
She loved to sew.

John Hammond

MANTENO -- Visitation for John A. Hammond, 68, of Manteno, will be from 4-8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Manteno.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley or to the Manteno Education Association in memory of John Hammond.
He died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center.
Mr. Hammond retired in 1989 from Paschen Contractors and was currently a real estate agent.
He was born Dec. 16, 1934, in Manteno, the son of Millard and Charlotte Ward Hammond. His parents are deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jacquelyn Gulczynski, whom he married Aug. 7, 1970, in Champaign, of Manteno; one daughter, Elizabeth Steele of Kankakee; one stepdaughter, Rebecca and Robert Obarski of Naperville; two stepsons, Robert and Kelly Boyd of Manteno, Jamie and Diane Boyd of Kankakee; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Shirley Hammond of Manteno; one sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Robert Burgeson of Bourbonnais; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the National Guard.
Mr. Hammond attended Manteno United Methodist Church and was a member of the Bradley Moose and the Masons.
He enjoyed music and old movies and was a Cubs and Bears fan.

James Harding

BUCKLEY -- Visitation for James "Red" H. Harding, 68, of Buckley, will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Knapp Funeral Home in Onarga, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. Charles Shelquist will officiate.
Burial will be in Onarga cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Association or to the Onarga United Methodist Church, where he was a member.
He died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Mr. Harding had worked at the France Broom Co. in Paxton for 38 years, retiring in 1992.
He was born Oct. 29, 1934, in Perry Co., Ind., the son of Ernest Sr. and Blanche Kellems Harding. His parents are deceased.
His first wife was the former Joan Price. He married her Nov. 17, 1956 in Watseka.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Donley, whom he married July 8, 1980, in Paxton, of Buckley; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cindy and Ed Warns of Ogden, Peggy and Doug Vest of Mt. Vernon, Cassandra Harding of Buckley; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanne and Glenn Nichoalds and Marilyn and John Tilstra, all of Onarga; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Hollis "Stub" Harding of Bolivia, Hargis and Marilou Harding of Onarga, Roy and Frances Harding and Larry Harding, all of Georgia, Gary and Virginia Harding of Odessa, Texas; five grandchildren and two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
One brother and one sister are deceased.
He enjoyed showing horses of all kinds and having field trials with dogs and hunting.

Earl Hofer

WATSEKA -- Earl G. Hofer, 84, of Watseka, died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) at Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka, and from 10 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. service at Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka. Rev. Dean Bottjen will officiate.
Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran cemetery in Cissna Park.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka, Faith Place, or the donor's choice.
Mr. Hofer was born Aug. 17, 1918 in Cissna Park, the son of Alfred and Lydia Baier Hofer.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lela Knake, whom he married Oct. 6, 1940 in Cissna Park, of Crescent City; one son, Jerry Hofer of Crescent City; three daughters and four sons-in-law, Janice and Robert Lubben, and Alan Buckley, all of Crescent City, Sandy and Tom Williams, Betty and Jim Mortensen, all of Watseka; one sister and brother-in-law, Nettie and John Oberfelt of Claytonville; one brother, Lawrence Hofer of Watseka; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
One daughter, Phyllis; one son, Glenn; and seven brothers, are deceased.
Mr. Hofer farmed for more than 40 years.
He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka and enjoyed gardening.

Jack Jones

MOMENCE -- Visitation for Jack L. Jones, 70, of Momence, will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the Cotter Funeral Home in Momence.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Grant Park, where he was a member for more than 40 years. Rev. Clyde Lange will officiate.
Burial, with military rites by the Momence Honor Guard, will be in Union Corners cemetery near Grant Park.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Hospice of Kankakee Valley or to the American Cancer Society.
He died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at his home.
Mr. Jones worked for Reiter Industries in Lowell, Ind. for 30 years.
He was born Oct. 19, 1932, in Schneider, Ind., the son of Wayne and Pearl Reynolds Jones. His parents are deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Betty Bredemeier, whom he married Oct. 24, 1959, in Grant Park, of Momence; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Julie Jones of West Chicago, Steve and Mary Jones of Momence; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Carroll and Nellie Jones of Schererville, Ind., Thomas Beardsley of California; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Donna and Ray Crick of Greenwood, Ind., Sharon Stiles of Cleveland, Texas, Wanda and John Bruce of Lowell, Ind., Judy Decker of Hackett, Ark.; and four grandchildren.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War era.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lowell, Ind. and had a pilot's license.
He enjoyed western and war movies, farming with his son and flying.

Martha LaFond
centenarian dies

Martha M. LaFond, 106, of Bourbonnais, who lived in three different centuries and in two continents, died Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) at Provena Our Lady of Victory Nursing Home.
During an interview for an article published in The Daily Journal in 2001, when she was 104, Mrs. LaFond offered a reason for her longevity. "I am 104 and still alive because I was very careful with my body, " she said.
She also had some sage advice.
"Enjoy learning everything, " she said. "Whatever you learn does help you in life, so keep on learning."
She witnessed many famous events during her long lifetime. She particularly remembered seeing the Zeppelin when she was only 8. "It was beautiful, like a pencil flying through the sky."
She also vividly remembered the thrill of her first car ride when she was 12. "I was very happy, " she said. "My friend and I picked leaves off the trees as we rode by."
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Provena Our Lady of Victory Nursing Home.
Cremation rites were accorded. Private burial will be held in California.
Fitzpatrick Funeral Directors, Kankakee, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. LaFond was a registered nurse in Pennsylvania and a private duty nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, retiring in 1972 at the age of 75.
She said she became a nurse because she had to do something. "It seemed like the best place to put me, but I certainly did like it, " she said in the article.
She was born Aug. 9, 1896, in Halle, Saxon, Germany, the daughter of August and Wilhelmina VonHalle Gaudig.
After spending her childhood in Germany, she moved to Milwaukee with her sister at the age of 16. Later, she took nurses' training at St. Anne's Hospital in Chicago, graduating with the class of 1915.
Her husband, Edward P. LaFond, whom she married in 1924 in Kankakee, died in 1961. She raised her family in Philadelphia, but moved to Kankakee in 1960 where she worked for St. Mary's Hospital.
Surviving are one daughter, Bernice Poydock of Bellflower, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Charlotte Eckel, died in 1992.
Mrs. LaFond was a member of the Lutheran church.

George Maxard

GARDNER -- George J. "Papa" Maxard, 85, of Gardner, died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) at his home.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, South Wilmington Chapel.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington, where he was a member. Revs. Bob Maternoski and Mark Menezes will officiate.
Burial will be in the Braceville-Gardner cemetery in Braceville. Pallbearers will be Chris Lewis, Tim Harvey, Joel, Shane and Ryan Maxard and Ralph Stevens.
Memorials may be made for Masses or to the South Wilmington Ambulance Fund.
Mr. Maxard farmed his entire life in the South Wilmington area and had also worked on construction projects.
He was born April 22, 1917, in South Wilmington, the son of Joseph and Frances Domagala Maxard.
Surviving are his wife, the former Cecilia Porebski, whom he married Sept. 5, 1943; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Duane Lewis, Jeanne and Merrill Harvey of Gardner, Rosalie and Dan Lardi of South Wilmington; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Linda Maxard of Gardner; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Victoria and Gerry Fournier of California, Faye Diorio and Lucille Stevens, both of Wilmington; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Three sisters, his twin, Rose Eggenburger, Claire Tornabene and Mary Perino, are deceased.
He was raised and educated in the South Wilmington area.
