Kenneth Walsh

COAL CITY -- Kenneth "Murphy" Walsh, 55, of Coal City, died Saturday (Dec. 21, 2002) at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Reeves Funeral Home in Coal City.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City. Rev. Mike Pennock and Deacon Bob Stansberry will officiate.
Burial will be in the Braceville-Gardner cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Walsh, William Hiney, Carl Pohl, Louis Campo, A.J. Gagliardo and Edward Unger. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Simmons, Robert Stansberry III and Christopher Walsh.
Memorials may be made to his family for later donation to charities of their choice.
Mr. Walsh was employed as a butcher at Bellettini's Grocery Store in Coal City.
He was born Nov. 14, 1947, in Joliet, the son of Kenneth and Elsie Unger Walsh. His parents are deceased.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Stacy and Doug Rivara of Minooka, Joanna and Mike Filippini of Spring Valley; one son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Ginger Walsh of Williamsville; five grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Robert Stansberry Jr. of Morris; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Susan Walsh of Coal City; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a 1965 graduate of Coal City High School.
He enjoyed outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing.

Sharon Eighner

HOOPESTON -- Sharon Kay Eighner, 53, of Hoopeston, died Sunday (Dec. 22, 2002) at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the noon services at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka. Gary Minard will officiate.
Burial will be in Body cemetery, Woodland.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Eighner had been a nurses aide.
She was born Oct. 31, 1949, in Cairo, the daughter of Riley and Alice Eastwood Burns. Her mother is deceased.
Surviving are her husband, Jeff Eighner, whom she married Nov. 8, 1968, in Washington, of Watseka; two daughers, Angie and Donnie Brown of Rantoul, Susie Eighner and Mark Logsdon of Hoopeston; her father of Nebraska; six grandchildren; eight brothers and five sisters-in-law, Riley and Joan Burns, James and Nancy Burns, Ted and Toni Burns, Steve and Sara Burns, all of Nebraska, Roy Burns and Gary Burns, both of Oregon; Todd and Larinda Burns of Ohio, Rick Burns of Illinois; one sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Harvey Kilgore of Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
One sister and one brother are deceased.
She enjoyed bingo.

Charles Sheldon
36-year A.O. Smith employee

CLIFTON -- Charles Sheldon, 85, of Clifton, died Sunday (Dec. 22, 2002) at his home, after a short illness.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
There will be no visitation or services.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley.
Arrangements are by the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton.
Mr. Sheldon had worked in security at the A.O. Smith Corporation for 36 years.
He was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Clifton, the son of Roy and Winnie Hobson Sheldon.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth E. Goldsby, whom he married July 16, 1949, in Watseka; and many nieces and nephews.
Two brothers and three sisters are deceased.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II and a charter member of the Clifton American Legion. He was a member of the VFW Post 1059.

Edward Smith

FAIRBURY -- Edward Corwin Smith, 64, of Fairbury, formerly of Gilman, died Saturday (Dec. 21, 2002) at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairbury, where he was a member. Rev. Tom Krieger officiated.
Burial was in Graceland cemetery, Fairbury. Pallbearers were Joe Oprondek, Sam Pica, Leroy McPherson, Terry Miller and Dan Small.
Memorials may be made to his church; the American Cancer Society; or to the donor's choice.
Mr. Smith was office manager for US Co-Tronis in Fairbury.
He was born Jan. 14, 1938, in Thawville, the son of Charles and Mary O'Neal Smith. His father is deceased.
Surviving are his wife, the former Judith "Judy" Lueeke, whom he married May 28, 1966, in Buckley, of Fairbury; three daughters and one son-in-law, Dawn and Shane Kestner of Forrest, Wendy Smith of Peoria, April Smith of Bloomington; his mother of Fairbury; one sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Mike Sharp of Bakersfield, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two nephews.
One nephew, Jeffery Kuipers, is deceased.
He was a 1956 graduate of Gilman High School.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Smith was secretary for the Wednesday Night Bowling and Central Illinois Traveling League.
He enjoyed bowling and coaching softball for his daughters and his grandsons teams. He also kept score while his daughters were playing basketball.

Christine VanHoveln

WATSEKA -- Visitation for Christine L. VanHoveln, 81, of Watseka, will be from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at St. John's Lutheran Church in Schwer, where she was a member. Rev. Mel Meyer will officiate.
Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Schwer.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church in Schwer.
Arrangements are by the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka.
Miss VanHoveln died Friday (Dec. 20, 2002) at Iroquois Memorial Hospital, Watseka.
She had worked for many years at TRW and Electronics Components Corp.
She was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Milford, the daughter of Frank and Hannah Lauterbauch VanHoveln.
Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Mary VanHoveln of Kankakee; two nephews, Michael VanHoveln of Watseka, James VanHoveln of Momence; and two nieces, Jodie Forbes of Aroma Park and Nancy Andrews of Vancouver, Wash.
One brother, Alvin VanHoveln, is deceased.
She enjoyed the Chicago White Sox.

John Cairns

WILMINGTON -- John J. Cairns, 86, of Wilmington, died Monday (Dec. 23, 2002) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee.
Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the Reeves Funeral Home in Wilmington.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Rose Catholic Church, Wilmington, where he was a member. Rev. Frank Vitus and Deacon Donald Dyer will officiate.
Burial, with military honors, will be in the Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Kuzma Care Cottage.
Mr. Cairns owned and operated the Corner Tap in Wilmington for several years. He had also worked for The Rayburn Trucking Co.
He was born Jan. 30, 1916, in Standard, the son of John G. and Nellie (Donna) Cairns.
His wife Ruth died in 1963.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John G. and Terrie Cairns of Wilmington; two grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Isabel Rayburn and Rose Cairns, both of Wilmington; and one sister-in-law, Ethel Barr of Wilmington.
Two sisters, Lucille Golden and Jean Gilmour, are deceased.
He was a graduate of Braidwood High School.
Mr. Cairns was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW Local 5422 in Wilmington.
He loved golfing.

Yvonne Franklin

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Yvonne DeCarla Franklin, 50, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Kankakee, died Wednesday (Dec. 11, 2002).
Services were held Dec. 17 at Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn. Rev. Gina Stewart officiated.
Burial was in Hillcrest cemetery, New Albany, Miss. Pallbearers were Christopher Smith, Donald, Ronald and Charles Myart, Ronald Jackson and Kenneth Beavers.
Ms. Franklin was employed at the Internal Revenue Service as a tax examiner for almost 14 years.
She helped found the Tenant Organization of the Kankakee Housing Authority and the Prairie State Legal Aid Service, both in Kankakee. She worked several years as a math instructor at Kankakee Community College and was involved in several volunteer service projects.
She was born Oct. 8, 1952, in New Albany, Miss., the daughter of Harvie Ezell Sr. and Agnes Louise Ray Franklin. Her father is deceased.
Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Angela and Ronald Jackson of Kankakee, Tonya Franklin of Gary, Ind.; two sons, Nathaniel Turner Jr. and Tony Turner, both of Memphis; her mother and stepfather, Agnes Louise and James Morgan of Bay Minette, Ala.; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Shelia Franklin and Heleon and Samuel Phillip, all of Kankakee, Hellen and Christopher Smith of Denver, Colo., Lois and Kenneth Franklin and Mary Franklin, all of Memphis, Tenn.; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Harvie Franklin Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., Steven Franklin of Kankakee, Charles and Ruth Franklin of Joliet, Robert and Kimberly Franklin of Bay Minette, Ala., Hayes and Francine Franklin of Ripley, Miss.; two uncles and one aunt; special friend, Nathaniel Turner Sr.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers; one sister; one aunt, Hazel Simmons; one nephew, Justin Franklin; and one niece, Ada Simmons, are deceased.

Edmund Guertin

Visitation for Edmund Joseph Guertin, 91, of Kankakee, will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. Friday until the 11 a.m. services at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. Rev. Richard Pighini will officiate.
Memorials may be made for Masses.
He died Saturday (Dec. 21, 2002) at his home.
Mr. Guertin was retired from Roper Stove where he had worked in production.
He was born Jan. 10, 1911, in Bradley, the son of Dolphis and Lucy Gregoire Guertin.
His wife, the former Eunice Seborg, whom he married Feb. 16, 1935, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Kankakee, died Oct. 20, 1982.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Kelly Guertin of Jonesboro, Ark., Stephen and Arlene Guertin of Crystal Lake, Russell and Dorothy Guertin of Northbrook; one sister, Viola Ebeling of Kankakee; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Frances Guertin of Limestone; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
One brother, Gene Guertin, is deceased.
Mr. Guertin was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Kankakee.
He enjoyed golfing and hunting.
