James Bruckman

MOMENCE -- James E. Bruckman, 78, of Momence, died Friday (July 25, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital. There will be no visitation or services. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be in Momence cemetery with military rites by the Momence Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. Arrangements are by Cotter Funeral Home in Momence. Mr. Bruckman was born Oct. 24, 1924, in Kankakee, the son of William and Isabelle Bruckman. Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn M. Bryan, whom he married June 12, 1969, in Angola, Ind., of Momence; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Robert and Donna Bryan of Virginia; a brother-in-law, Eldon Bryan of Momence; one brother, Bob Bruckman of Kentucky; and one sister, Isabelle Williams of Chicago Heights. Two brothers and three sisters are deceased. Mr. Bruckman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving two Bronze Stars for his actions during the D-Day invasion at the Juno beachhead in Normandy, France. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Momence. He was a retired owner/operator semi-driver.

Ellene Durkin

MANTENO -- Ellene L. Durkin, 63, of Manteno, died Friday (July 25, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital emergency room. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Manteno, where services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Manteno. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Durkin was born March 16, 1940, in Evergreen Park, the daughter of Robert and Virginia Gorski Woolet. Her parents are deceased. Surviving are her husband, John T. Durkin, whom she married Aug. 26, 1961 at St. Bernadette in Evergreen Park, of Manteno; five daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanice and Kevin Croy of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Madonna and Robert Baker of Naperville, Suzanne and Lyle Bighorn of Tempe, Ariz., Theresa and George Joachim of Joliet, Bernadette and Edward Zita of Downer's Grove; one sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Mark Oboiakovitz of Oak Forest; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Pat Woolet of Oak Forest, Thomas and Jeanine Woolet of Chicago; and 12 grandchildren. Mrs. Durkin was a former bookkeeper in the banking industry. She had also managed the Great American Bagel Store in Downers Grove. She enjoyed cooking and sewing.

Rose Hayes

Rose A. Hayes, 85, of Bradley, died Saturday (July 26, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home Bourbonnais. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bradley.

Ralph "Bud" Eugene Hines

WATSEKA -- Visitation for Ralph "Bud" Eugene Hines, 82, of Watseka, will be from 10 a.m. Monday until the 11 a.m. service at Baier Funeral Home, Watseka. Rev. Lee Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in Sugar Creek cemetery in Stockland. Memorials may be made to Iroquois Memorial Hospice or the donor's choice. Mr. Hines died Thursday (July 24, 2003) at his home. He was born Jan. 11, 1921 in Rossville, the son of Charles and Lucille Galloway Hines. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary E. Vorick, whom he married June 21, 1941, in Hoopeston, of Watseka; one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph Jr. and Kay Hines of Florida.; one grandson; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jim Bonham of Watseka; one sister-in-law, Aldine Hines of Watseka; and many nieces and nephews. Two infant daughters; six brothers; and one sister, are deceased. Mr. Hines worked for an automotive dealership for 23 years. He served in the Air Force and was a member of the Watseka American Legion. He was a member of St. Edmund's Catholic Church and enjoyed sports.

Ronald Hunt

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Ronald G. Hunt, 71, of Chandler, Ariz., formerly of Donovan, died Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at his home. Services are tentatively set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Knapp Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Lettie Jennings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Visitation for Lettie Mae Jennings, 55, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Kankakee, will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home, Kankakee. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greater New Hope Baptist Church. Rev. Robert Rucker will officiate. Burial will be in Mound Grove Gardens cemetery, Kankakee. Memorials may be made to Stone Croft Ministries, Kansas City, Mo. Ms. Jennings died Tuesday (July 22, 2003) in Atlanta, Ga. She was born Jan. 29, 1948, the daughter of James C. and Geneva Swearengen Jennings. Her father is deceased. Surviving are one daughter, Felicia Booker of Murphysboro; seven sisters and three brothers-in-law, Ella Austin, Johnnie Bell, Dorothy and Garfield Jones, all of Kankakee; Velzora and Monroe Jenkins of St. Louis Mo., Charlene Adams of Pearl, Miss., Jacqueline and Charles McElRoy of Milwaukee, Wis., Carolyn Brown of Dayton, Ohio; five brothers, James Keith Jennings of Minneapolis, Minn., Charles Ray Jennings of Fulton, Ky., Fred Jennings of Mounds, DeRandie Jennings of Charleston, Mo., James Ezell Jennings of Tucson, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. One brother, James C. Jennings Jr., is deceased. Mrs. Jennings was an overseas liason missionary for Stone Croft Ministries (worked with foreign countries). She implemented friendship Bible coffee's. She was a member of New Hope Bible Church in Kansas City, Mo., and Pleasant Grove M.B. Church in Kankakee. She was a member of Christian Women's After Hours Club and wrote devotionals for Progress Magazine Publications.

Madeline Sells

Visitation for Madeline M. Sells, 87, of Bradley, will be 2-6 p.m. today at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Bourbonnais. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Rev. Charles Wheeler will officiate. Burial will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Mrs. Sells died Thursday (July 24, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital emergency room. She was born Feb. 28, 1916 in Kankakee, the daughter of George Sr. and Roseanna LaMarre Martell. Her husband, Donald E. Sells, whom she married July 11, 1935 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Kankakee, died June 9, 1998. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Gerald L. Hartman of Bradley; two grandsons, Greg and Cindy Fugar of Oshkosh, Wis., Kevin and Katie Fugar of Necedah, Wis.; four great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Ambrose and Maxine Martell of Kankakee; a sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Four brothers, George Jr., Noel, Leonel and Francis Martell; and one sister, Marie Martell, are deceased. Mrs. Sells worked at Kresges for 13 years and retired from Belscot after 10 years. She was a member of United Commercial Travelers, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Ladies of St. Anne.

Norman Suits

Norman Lee Suits, 65, a former Fairland and Chebanse resident, died July 3, 2003, at Mount Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., from leukemia. Services were held at the Community Church Congregational United Church of Christ in Corona del Mar, Calif. He was born April 8, 1938, in Chebanse, the son of Maurice and Neva Green Suits. Surviving are his wife, Candy; three children, Kelly, Amy and Greg; two grandchildren; two brothers, Mickey and Larry, both of Fairland; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanita and Bill Ayres of Fairland and Arlene and Earl Wilkes of Shelbyville; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Chebanse area. He was a graduate of Moral Township School and Purdue University. Mr. Suits graduated first in his class with top honors from Luke Air Force Base. Col. Suits retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1982. He served in the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Silver Star. He later became a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base and subsequently served as the commandant of the USAF Test Pilot School. After working four years in the private aerospace sector, he started his own company, Symbolic Displays Inc.

Lawrence Bailey

L'ERABLE -- A funeral Mass for Lawrence H. "Beetle" Bailey, 81, of L'Erable, was celebrated July 24 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in L'Erable. Rev. James Holup officiated. Mr. Bailey died July 21, 2003. Burial was in the L'Erable Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers were Evan Guthrie, Keith Brault, Norman Lopez, Bill Maves, Arturo Gonzalez and Web Bohn. Michael Batsch A funeral Mass for Michael T. Batsch, 43, of Bourbonnais, was celebrated July 25 at Maternity BVM Catholic Church in Bourbonnais. Rev. James Michaletz and Deacon Francis Chamness co-officiated. Mr. Batsch died July 20, 2003. Burial was in All Saints cemetery, Bourbonnais. Pallbearers were Ron Decker, Bill Blinkwolt, Todd Bloomquist, Shawn Bogusz, Jim and Bill Batsch.

Gerald Bovie

A funeral Mass for Gerald "Gerry" J. Bovie, 84, of Bourbonnais, was celebrated July 25, 2003, at Maternity BVM Catholic Church in Bourbonnais. Rev. John Linnan and Deacon Mush Marcotte co-officiated. Mr. Bovie died July 21, 2003. Burial was in St. Anne Catholic cemetery, St. Anne. Pallbearers were Ron Kloske, Roger Benjamin, Leonard Flock, Bob Bovie, Kenny Tunks and Ron Hoekstra. Honorary Pallbearers were Guy Beaupre and Nino Levecque.

Eva Wilson

NILES, Mich. -- Eva Iceie Wilson, 92, of Niles Mich., died Friday (July 25, 2003) at her son's home in Coal City. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. today until the 3 p.m. service at First Baptist Church, Rt. 113 West in Coal City. Rev. Hal Behrens will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery in Niles, Mich. Arrangements are by R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd., Braidwood. Mrs. Wilson was born June 17, 1911, the daughter of Bunk Anderson and Minnie May Creasy Meek. Her husband, Buddy W. Wilson, is deceased. Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Avery L. and Venita Wilson of Coal City, Ruthel R. "Ray" Wilson of Niles, Mich.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two brothers; five sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. An infant son and infant daughter; a brother; and a sister, are deceased. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Niles, Mich., and enjoyed crocheting and ceramics.

Ida Appelberg

MOMENCE -- Graveside services for Ida E. Poynter Appelberg, 98, of Momence, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Momence cemetery. Rev. John Franklin will officiate. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley, 1015 N. 5th Ave., No. 5, Kankakee, Ill., 60901, or to Catholic Charities, 200 N. Schuyler Ave., Kankakee, Ill., 60901. Hub Funeral Chapel in Grant Park is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Appelberg died Monday (July 21, 2003) in Momence. She was born May 4, 1905, in Sulphur Well, Ky., the daughter of Charley and Leona Williams Robertson. Her first husband, Henry Poynter, whom she married June 18, 1927, in Momence, died in 1967. She later married Stanley Appelberg, who is also deceased. Surviving are one son, Lawrence Poynter of Steger; one daughter, Marilyn Love of Kankakee; and several grandchildren. Two sons, Harry and Donald Poynter, are deceased. She enjoyed flowers, dining out and traveling.

Gerald Bovie
Armour retiree

Visitation for Gerald "Gerry" J. Bovie, 74, of Bourbonnais, will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Maternity BVM Catholic Church in Bourbonnais, where he was a member. Burial, with military rites by the Aroma Park American Legion F-Troop, will be in the St. Anne Catholic cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. He died Monday (July 21, 2003) at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital, after a short illness. Mr. Bovie was a longtime builder in the area and had retired from Armour Pharmaceutial after 27 years of service. He worked part-time at David Bruce. Following his retirement, he was the number one fan of his grandchildren's sporting events. He was born June 23, 1929, in St. Anne, the son of Pat and Rosella Caise Bovie. His parents are deceased. Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Nielsen, whom he married Aug. 4, 1956, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Kankakee, of Bourbonnais; one son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Amy Bovie of Bourbonnais; one daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Jeff Bennett of Bourbonnais; nine grandchildren, Terra and Andy Czako of Naperville, Brandi, Ashley, Blair and Taylor Bennett, Jenna, Jon, Patrick and Peyton Bovie, all of Bourbonnais; and special family members, Jeanne and Roger Benjamin of Bourbonnais and Rob and Sue Nielsen and family. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Bovie was a member of the Kankakee Elks, the Knights of Columbus, the Bradley Moose and the St. Anne American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, boating, cards and dancing.

Marci Bretzman

WHITEFISH BAY, Wis. -- Marci V. Bretzman, 50, of Whitefish Bay, Wis., formerly of Kankakee, died Monday (July 21, 2003). She was born and raised in Kankakee the daughter of Harold and Lorraine Veronda. Her parents are deceased. Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Floyd Bretzman; two sons, Evan and Case Bretzman; one sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Paul Smith; one sister-in-law, Janet (Marc) Denault; two brothers-in-law, Gary (Shauna) Bretzman and Mark Bretzman; father-in-law, James Bretzman; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. Her mother-in-law, Eleanor Bretzman, is deceased. Marci had a true love for traveling and spreading her love for people and life around the world. Marci found joy in creating happy times for others, always putting them before herself. She treasured her Corps of Girlfriend Angels, COGA, who supported her and her fight for the cure. She loved colorful flowers and had requested that people who come to share in the tribute to her life wear bright and colorful clothing as a symbol of the beauty that life holds. Marci will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Feerick Funeral Home, 2025 E. Capitol Dr., Milwaukee, Wis., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 2491 N. Murray Avenue, Milwaukee. Burial will be in Wisconsin Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials would be appreciated in Marci's name to the Milwaukee Comen Foundation, P.O. Box 510004, New Berlin, WI 53151-0004; to the Habitat for Humanity, Inc., 2233 N. 30th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53208; or to a college fund for her sons, Evan and Case Bretzman, in c/o the Feerick Funeral Home.

Dorothy Frey

DIAMOND -- Dorothy Jean Frey, 81, of Diamond, died Monday (July 21, 2003) at the Grundy County Home. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the Freitag Funeral Home in Wilmington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Rev. Frank Vitus will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Joliet. Mrs. Frey was a former employee of Messengers of Joliet and Liberty Control Co. of Joliet/Shorewood. She was born Oct. 14, 1921, in Joliet, the daughter of Moses and Anna Stren Brown. Her husband, Clarence Frey, died in 1995. Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Raymond and Carol Frey of Sumter, S.C., Robert N. Frey of Diamond; one grandson, Allen Frey; and several nieces and nephews. One son, Richard; two brothers, Robert and Willard Brown; and one sister, Mildred Chamberlin, are deceased. She was a member of the LOL Club of Joliet.

George Hoffman

ESSEX -- Visitation for George O. Hoffman, 69, of Essex, a longtime community leader, will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9-9:30 a.m. Friday at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Braidwood Chapel. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Friday to St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church in Essex for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Rev. Steve Bondi will officiate. Interment will be in Sacred Heart cemetery in Campus. Preferred memorials are gifts in his name to the Essex Fire Department and the St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church in Essex. He died Monday (July 21, 2003) at his home. Mr. Hoffman had been Essex Township trustee and supervisor since 1988. He was a member of the Kankakee County Board for the last eight years, serving as chairman of the Highway Committee, and was treasurer of the Essex Salina Tax District. He was a former member of the RUCE School Board where he served for 15 years. A fourth generation farmer, he had farmed in Essex Township for 40 years. He also formerly worked at Natural Gas Pipeline in Herscher for seven years. He was born Sept. 29, 1933, in Essex, the son of Orland and Emily Cutshaw Hoffman. His parents are deceased. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, the former Ann E. Cuddy, whom he married Sept. 1, 1956 in Campus; two sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Jane Hoffman of Bonfield, Bill and Polly Hoffman of Gardner; one daughter and son-in-law, VaLinda and Jeff King of Reddick; eight grandchildren, Dale and Bridget Hoffman, Nolan and Lane Hoffman, Mitchell, Megan, Landon and Jase Hoffman and Danielle King; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James A. and Elsie Hoffman of Essex, Dan and Donna Hoffman of Herscher; six sisters and three brothers-in-law, Anna Proto of West Palm, Fla., Irene Hooper of rural Essex, Violette and Thomas Sumner of Flippin, Ark., Waneta and Joe Schlosser of Kirkland, Wash., Marie Granger of South Wilmington, Helen and Larry Tendall of Mountain Home, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Two brothers-in-law, Charles Proto and William Hooper, are deceased. Mr. Hoffman was a member of St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church in Essex where he was a trustee and assisted in numerous functions of the church for many years. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and the Elks, both in Kankakee, and the Kankakee County Farm Bureau. Mr. Hoffman served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed his grandchildren, trees and ballroom dancing.
