John Copeland

Visitation for John Albert Copeland Sr., 64, of Kankakee, a 50-year area resident, will be from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at St. Anne Woods Chapel. The Rev. Louis Barnes will officiate. Burial will be in the Momence cemetery in Ganeer Township. Leggett Funeral Home, Hopkins Park, is in charge of arrangements. He died Friday (June 27, 2003) at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights. Mr. Copeland worked at the Threshold Company. He was born Dec. 9, 1938, in Ensley, Ala., the son of Curley and Alma Barnes Copeland. His parents are deceased. Surviving are his wife, the former Johnnie Rivers, whom he married Sept. 8, 2002, in Kankakee; one son, John A. Copeland Jr. of Kankakee; three daughters, Veola Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, Alma Gathing of Kankakee, Glenda Copeland of Bradley; one brother, Willie Morgan of Georgia; four sisters, Yvonne Copeland and Bessie Brown, both of Chicago, Eleanor Riley of Hopkins Park, Rosetta Kennedy of Kankakee; and 15 grandchildren. Three brothers are deceased. He enjoyed fishing and movies.

Ronald Hutchings

WATSEKA -- Ronald Hutchings, 71, of Watseka, died today (July 1, 2003) at his home. Arrangements are pending at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka.

Joshua Kohler

ASHKUM -- Funeral services for 21-year-old Joshua W. "Josh" Kohler of Crescent City, formerly of Ashkum, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton. The Rev. Harold Grafe of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Crescent City will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Chebanse. Friends may call at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Josh died early Monday (June 30, 2003) as a result of an auto accident in rural Ashkum. Josh was born on Sept. 5, 1981, in Clifton, the son of Earl W. and Peggy S. Hansen Kohler. They survive in Crescent City. Other survivors include his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kohler of Chebanse; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ruth Hansen of Marshall; one sister and brother-in-law, Mendi and Chris Garcia of Cadiz, Ky.; one brother and sister-in-law, Travis and Michelle Kohler of Manteno; special friend, Amanda Collins of Crescent City; aunts and uncles, Nan and Chuck Dixon of Manteno, Larry Kohler of Ashkum, Dale Kohler of Chebanse, Chuck and Debbie Kohler of Ashkum, Debbie and Dennis Hilleary of Kankakee; cousins, A.J. Dixon of Manteno, Jessica and Dan Gagnon of Kankakee, Tami and Lance White of Princeton, Ky., Darrin and Kelly Kohler of Chebanse, Don and Amy Hilleary of Kankakee, Chad and Heather Kohler of Ashkum; several distant cousins; and nephews, Tate and Colton Hemp and Kody Kohler. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Arthur Hansen and an uncle, Duane Hansen. Josh was an aspiring young race driver here at Kankakee and some of the other area raceways. He currently drove the -1 Car for his father, and at the time of his death was currently in eighth place in the points standings in the Street Stock Division, at the Kankakee Speedway. He also enjoyed playing football, basketball and baseball. He was a graduate of Central schools.

Frances Lowman

MOMENCE -- Visitation for Frances M. Lowman, 79, of Momence, will be from noon Wednesday until the 1 p.m. services at the Cotter Funeral Home in Momence. Rev. Jerry Haley will officiate. Burial will be in the Momence cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family wishes. She died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at Momence Meadows Nursing Home. Mrs. Lowman had been a cashier at Speith's Market, a cook at Simpson's Restaurant in Momence and at the Eagle Island Restaurant. She was born July 14, 1923, in Momence, the daughter of Harold and Anna M. Jensen Hupp. Her husband, Gerald E. Lowman, whom she married June 20, 1941 in St. Anne, died in 1967. Surviving are three daughters, Susan Henson of Momence, Pamela Lowman of Park Forest, Michelle Lowman of Connecticut; four sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Diana Lowman of Momence, Thomas and Beth Lowman of Arkansas, Steven and Nance Lowman of St. Anne, David and Kristin Lowman of Western Springs; two sisters, Jean Franklin of Manteno, Shirley Vehrs of Missouri; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Emma and Ray Lloyd of California; special friend, LaVerne Powers of Momence; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. One brother, Floyd Hupp and one daughter, Christine Lowman, are deceased. Mrs. Lowman was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Momence. She enjoyed reading.

Ona Martin

HILDALGO -- Visitation for Ona Pearl Martin, 84, of Hidalgo, the mother of a Kankakee resident, will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the Barley Funeral Home, 300 N. Kentucky, Greenup, Ill. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Fellowship Church, Hidalgo, where she was a member. Burial will be in Westlawn cemetery in Newton. Memorials may be made to Baby Fold in Normal. She died Saturday (June 28, 2003) at Riverside Medical Center. Mrs. Martin was a retired dress shop owner. She was born March 20, 1919, in Yale, the daughter of Brodie and Cyrena Farley Perisho. Her husband, Floyd P. Martin, whom she married Aug. 2, 1933, is deceased. Surviving are one daughter, Dixie McCall of Kankakee; four grandchildren, Lori McCall of Kankakee, Mark McCall of Berkley, Calif., Brent McCall of Hidalgo, Debra Eberly of Chandler, Ariz.; two sisters; and five great-grandchildren. A daughter, two son-in-laws, including Max McCall, four sisters and two brothers, are deceased. Mrs. Martin was a volunteer for the Missions at her church. She enjoyed quilting.

William Mosier

BRAIDWOOD -- William L. Mosier, 91, of Braidwood, died Monday (June 30, 2003) at Embassy Care Center in Wilmington. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Braidwood Chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church in Braidwood, where he was a member. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Wilmington. Pallbearers will be Thomas, John, William and Daniel Mosier, Joseph Jay and Christopher Schouten. Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities. Mr. Mosier farmed in Braidwood for several years. He was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Atchison County, Kan., the son of William and Georgiana Deuter Mosier. His wife, the former Frances "Fannie" Flood, is deceased. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, William H. and Bonnie Mosier of Diamond, Tom and Sharon Mosier of Wilmington; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Mosier of Chebanse; and nieces and nephews. One grandson, James Michael Mosier; one brother, Fred Mosier; and three sisters, Mary Mosier, Rosie Mosier and Alice Domagalla, are deceased. Mr. Mosier was a member of the Braidwood Recreation Club.

Mary Phillips

BRACEVILLE -- Mary Elizabeth Vaughan Phillips, 60, of Braceville, died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Braidwood Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday.

Carl Piper

HERSCHER -- Visitation for Carl H. Piper, 94, of Herscher, will be from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until the 10:30 a.m. celebration of the funeral Mass at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Herscher, where he was a member. Rev. Ronald Hart will officiate. Burial, with military rites by the Kankakee American Legion Post 85, will be in St. Peter and Paul cemetery in Herscher. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley. Arrangements are by the Herscher Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Homes. He died Saturday (June 28, 2003) at Merkle-Knipprath Nursing Home in Clifton. Mr. Piper worked in implement sales for John Deere and was a farmer, retiring in 1980. He was born July 29, 1908, in Buckingham, the son of William and Agusta Pash Piper. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth M. Fritz, whom he married Dec. 31, 1935, in Irwin, of Clifton; one daughter and son-in-law, Jacquelyn and David Ball of Frankfort; five grandchildren, Michelle and David Schwellenbach of Matteson, Christine and Korey Bowling of Suwanee, Ga., Catherine and Brian Carter of Mundelein, Jennifer and Jeff Beattie of West Hartford, Conn., Brendan and Anne Ball of Aurora; and nine great-grandchildren. Four brothers, Ed, George, Art and Clarence Piper; and four sisters, Ida and Emma Piper, Elsa Beland and Edna Miginus, are deceased. Mr. Piper served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Kankakee American Legion Post 85. He was also a member of the Herscher Chamber of Commerce.

Genevieve Plante

Genevieve F. Steinhart Plante, 80, of Kankakee, died Monday (June 30, 2003) at Miller Center. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, with a 3:30 p.m. wake service at the Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Kankakee. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Memorials may be made to the ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) Foundation. Mrs. Plante assisted her first husband in the family business. She was born March 1, 1923, in Kankakee, the daughter of John and Bernadette Moran Jemar. Her first husband, Victor Steinhart, whom she married in September 1947, died in 1993. Her second husband, Arcade "Joe" Plante, whom she married in 1998, died in 2000. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Ralph Farmer of Bowling Green, Ky., Vickie and Wade Wright of Corpus Christi, Texas, Shari and Russ Dilday of Kankakee; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One brother, Shirley Jemar, is deceased. Mrs. Plante was a member of the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed crafts.

Brian Pocica

WATSEKA -- Brian J. Pocica, 36, of Watseka, died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at Iroquois Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. Thursday until the 11 a.m. services at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka. Brent Helwig will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watseka. Memorials may be made for the family or to the donor's choice. Mr. Pocica was a welder at Legris Welding. He was born Sept. 7, 1966, in Chicago, the son of Chester and Karen Zdenovec Pocica. Surviving are his wife, the former Debra Kessinger, whom he married May 22, 1999, in Peoria, of Watseka; four sons, Joe Harms of Watseka, Zachary, Maxwell and William Pocica, all at home; three daughters, Amber Harms of Milford, Tessa and Zoe Pocica, both at home; his parents of Summit; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Denise Pocica of Plainfield. His grandparents are deceased. He enjoyed camping, hiking with kids and fishing.

Sossoman, 86, of New York Mills, Minn., formerly of Aroma Park, will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Clancy-Gernon-Houk Funeral Home, St. Anne, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Rev. Andrew Hansen will officiate. Burial will be in the Aroma Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Aroma Park American Legion. He died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at Provena St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee. Mr. Sossoman was a retired Metropolitan Life Insurance agent. He was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Rochester, Minn., the son of John and Marjorie L. Hodge Sossoman. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John Wesley and Cindy Sossoman of Topeka, Kan.; one daughter, Wanda L. Byarley of Bourbonnais; three sisters, Sarah Frizzell of Aroma Park, Hazel Shreffler of Bourbonnais, Beulah Miller of Bradley; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and longtime friend, Ruth Pernula of New York Mills, Minn. One sister, Anna Frizzell; one son-in-law, Phil Byarley; three brothers-in-law, Everett Frizzell, Francis "Ham" Miller, Floyd Frizzell; and four grandchildren, are deceased. Mr. Sossoman served in the U.S. Army Engineers during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. He was a member of the VFW in New York Mills, Minn., where he was a former district commander and past officer; and was a member of the Aroma Park American Legion. He was a member of the Aroma Park Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing.

Marcile Sullivan

CULLOM -- Marcile Hack Sullivan, 87, of Santa Monica, Calif., formerly of Cullom, died Saturday (June 28, 2003) at her home. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Little Chapel of the Dawn, 1925 Arizona Ave., Santa Monica, Calif. Gates, Kingsley and Gates Moeller Murphy, are in charge of arrangements. She was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Cullom, the daughter of Earl and Dorothy Hack. Surviving are her husband, Jim Sullivan; one daughter, Teresa Sullivan; one sister, Phyllis Hack Goff; one aunt, Florence Stahl Plank; nieces, nephews and other relatives. One daughter, Michele; and one brother, Donald, are deceased.

Theorable Byrd

Services for Theorable Byrd, 47, of Kankakee, were held June 28 at the Greater New Hope Church. Rev. Howard L. Wills Sr. officiated. Mr. Byrd died June 21, 2003. Burial was in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers were Willie Byrd Jr., Louis Melton, Timothy Dee, David Byrd, Allen Hawkins, Tony Nethery and Harry Lain. Honorary pallbearers were Jonathan Melton, Sammie Davis Jr., Arthur Byrd, Roberto Gamez, Tim Nehls and Cleveland Brown. Dorothy Brinkman CHEBANSE -- Services for Dorothy F. Brinkman, 89, of Chebanse, formerly of Cullom, were held June 28 at the United Methodist Church of Cullom. Rev. Herb Thompson officiated. Mrs. Brinkman died June 26, 2003. Burial was in Westlawn cemetery in Cullom. Pallbearers were Charles Donley, Elson Shuck, Brett Butler, Chris Shuck, Bruce Butler and Keith Shambrook.

Stacy Cluver

CISSNA PARK -- Services for Stacy Louise Cluver, 28, of Cissna Park, were held June 28 at the Grace Bible Church, Kellart Lake, Cissna Park. Rev. Bud Pederson officiated. Miss Cluver died June 25, 2003. Burial was in the Cissna Park cemetery. Pallbearers were Ralph Walder, Delbert Street, Dan Zbinden, Albert Kaufman Jr., Loren Bauer and Glen Berg. Honorary pallbearer was Steve Kaufman. May LeDuke A funeral Mass for May L. LeDuke, 83, of Bourbonnais, was celebrated June 30 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph Tremonti officiated. Mrs. LeDuke died June 27, 2003. Burial was in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers were Greg Blaney, Jeff Linnabary, Michael Westfall, Douglas Krippel, Michael Lardi and Tim Horrie.

Harold Kroesch

BONFIELD -- Services for Harold P. "Pip" Kroesch, 85, of Bonfield, were held June 30 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bonfield. Rev. John Kiefer officiated. Mr. Kroesch died June 26, 2003. Burial was in Kankakee Memorial Gardens cemetery. Pallbearers were Lance G. Kroesch, Doug and Randy Lehnus, Ronald and Donald Kroesch and Roger Jensen. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Geiger, Dennis Rabideau, Lester and Ralph Sharper, Wayne Soltwisch and Duane Krieg.
