Rocco J. Greco
Rocco J. Greco, age 81, a resident of Beach Park formerly of Chicago, was an entertainer well known to many Chicagoans. He was born to Louis and Grace Greco in 1922, and raised a family of thirteen children on the northwest side of Chicago. His interest in music developed in the 1940's while he was assigned as a Chaplain's Assistant during his tour of duty with the U.S. Army during World War II. One day, he was called upon to play the organ at religious services held at a military camp. He became so interested in performing that from that day on, he decided to start studying music professionally. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he enrolled in the School of Music in Chicago under the direction of the late Lou Webb, who was then staff organist for NBC and WMAQ.
In December 1946, he started entertaining professionally at a small Chicago club, which eventually developed to include a singing career. During his career, Mr. Greco released several albums containing popular hits including: The Whole World is Singing My Song, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, Sentimental Journey, Fly Me to the Moon, and You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves You. Early in his career, Rocco Greco was described by industry critics as having a deep, warm, exciting voice and a dynamic singing personality. Being civic minded, Mr. Greco also performed annually at police benevolent events. Rocco Greco was truly a great performing artist and sang from his heart for the pleasure of his audiences. Mr. Greco owned and performed nightly at a nightspot bearing his name, Mr. Greco's Lounge, near Belmont and Central Avenues in Chicago until retirement. Mr. Greco was a resident of Waukegan over 30 years.
