RayEtta (Ray) Manns
RayEtta (Ray) Manns was born Theresa Lewis to Raphield and LaVella Lewis on her mother's birthday in Chicago, Illinois. At a young age, RayEtta decided that the name "Theresa" did not fit her, so unofficially, and with the help of her mother, she changed her name to RayEtta. She was christened "Elizabeth" at St. Elizabeth as an infant.
RayEtta attended St. Elizabeth and Coleman Elementary Schools. She graduated from Wendell Phillips High School where she met and dated Emerson Manns for five years. They eventually married on June 1, 1937.
After high school, RayEtta attended Chicago Teacher's College for a year, however dropped out to pursue her real passion, music. She sang and played piano at local clubs in her area and she often said "How can you live without music!" One of her other favorite things was ballroom dancing with Emerson. The house was often filed with Emerson's large extended family and their friends enjoying music, playing cards and eating her cooking, which she also relished. She was an only child, raised by her mother, LaVelle and grandmother, Flossie after her parent's divorce.
RayEtta was an expert at making her children feel special and not feeling poor. She worked hard doing extra things for her family which was her life. Her family grew up in the Ida B. Wells housing project in a tight-knit neighborhood of friends, who she kept throughout the years. At one time, she taught the children in the neighborhood tap dancing, giving recitals, as well as birthday parties for each of her eight children. Despite her constant daily work raising her children and pleasing her husband, she loved to entertain.
RayEtta was always invested in her religion. She felt that faith could move mountains and remained loyal to her faith in God. She attended mass regularly until her health began to fail about two years ago.
preceded in death by her husband, Emerson of fifty years; and her son, Gerald.
RayEtta leaves to celebrate her many memories, seven children, Emerson Jr., Diane, Betty, Bobby, Barbara, Patricia and Michael; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-one great grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as "GG"; one sister-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Affectionately dubbed, "The Queen Mother" by he grandchildren, RayEtta left us with awesome memories and the distinct knowledge that she completed a job well done.
