Vernie H. Plotz, 77, of Antioch, IL passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Victory Lakes Continuing Care Center, Lindenhurst, IL.
Funeral service arrangements are pending at the STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH.

Morris Shapiro "Moe"
Morris "Moe" Shapiro, 84, of Libertyville, IL, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in North Chicago. He was born February 1, 1920 in Norwalk, CT, was a resident of Fairfield, CT for most of his life, moving to Libertyville in 1999. He was a US Army Veteran, having served in the European Theatre during WW II and later enjoyed the many years that he spent as a wholesale florist.
Moe never met a person he didn't like, was always surrounded by his many friends and his life was also enriched by the family pets. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and was a member of the Mill River Country Club in CT and the Hillcrest Country Club in Long Grove, IL.
Surviving are his sons, Michael (Shelley) Shapiro of Fairfield, CT and Neil Shapiro of Libertyville; four Grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim), Joanna, Stephen and Elizabeth; two Great Grandchildren, Steven and Matthew; two Sisters, Betty and Lily Shapiro of Norwalk; a niece Judy (Harry) Andrew and nephews, David (Naomi) Pockell and Leslie (Noriko) Pockell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Shapiro, by his wife Carolyn in 1994, by a brother Leonard and sisters, Ruth & Mildred.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday October 8 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave., (Rt. 176) Libertyville. Services will also be held in Connecticut. For those who wish to make a contribution, can do so to the charity of your choice in his memory.

Jane M. Czaplicki
Jane M. Czaplicki, 93, of Round Lake passed away Sunday, October 5, 2003 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. She was born August 29, 1910 in Poland to John and Wladyslawa (Chmielinski) Czaplicki. Jane was a resident of Round Lake for the past three years, where she lived with her niece and her husband, Phyllis and Howard Carlson. Previously, she was a 20 year resident of Lake Villa after having moved from Chicago. For many years she was a seamstress for Leo Theatrical Supply Co. in Chicago. She had also worked as a photo colorist for her brother, Mitchell, who owned the Biltmore Studio in Chicago.
She was affiliated with the Polish Women's Alliance of America. A former member of the Holy Trinity Church in Chicago, she attended Prince of Peace Church in Lake Villa.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Monica Czaplicki; two nieces and many nephews; many grand nieces and nephews; and many great grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Mitchell (the late Gladys) Czaplicki and Bruno Czaplicki; two sisters, Mae (the late Joseph) Bartosiewicz and Dorothy (the late Charlie) Langer.
The visitation will be from 5 to 9 PM Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at JUSTEN'S ROUND LAKE FUNERAL HOME, 222 N. Rosedale Court (at Cedar Lake Road), Round Lake, IL, 60073.
The funeral service will be at 10 AM Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Adalbert cemetery, Niles.

Ernest W. Haataja
Ernest W. Haataja, 84, of Waukegan, passed away October 4, 2003 at St. Therese Medical Center. He was born August 25, 1919 in Copper City, MI. He served in World War II in the Army Air Force. He loved fishing and wood crafts.
Survived by his wife of 35 years, Una Haataja, one son, Michael Haataja of Winthrop Harbor.
Service and burial will be private. Arrangements by MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF WAUKEGAN.

Dr. William I. Metzger
Dr. William I. Metzger, 87, of Libertyville, IL passed away Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the Lake Forest Hospital. He was born October 29, 1915 in Peekskill, New York, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Science from Purdue University and a doctorate degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1946. Dr. Metzger retired from Cook County Hospital in 1982, where he was the Director of Clinical Microbiology since 1954.
He was a long time member of the American and Illinois Society for Microbiology; Fellow of the American Public Health Association, past member of Sigma Xi, the New York Academy of Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was certified by the American Board of Medical Microbiology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He was also an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology for several years, and a member of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville.
Dr. Metzger was the author of 50 scientific papers on original research published in the National Laboratory and Medical Journals. Those studies related to clinical procedures with infectious diseases, including their treatment with chemotherapeutic agents. He participated in the development of the first Tetracycline Antibiotic, Aureomycin, prior to coming to Illinois. While at Cook County Hospital, he was instrumental in the development of a Pneumococcol vaccine.
Surviving are his beloved wife of many years, Trudy Metzger; a daughter, Annette (Tim) Hagerty; a son, Dr. Dennis (Colleen) Metzger; grandfather of Luke, Quincy, Lindsey, Jacquline, Christina, Caroline, Natalie and Gregory; and great grandfather of Jacob; dear brother, Kenneth (Agnes) Metzger.
Prayers will begin at 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME, 120 W. Park Ave (Rt. 176), Libertyville and services will continue to St. Joseph Church for Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Ascension cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House in Milwaukee in his memory.

Eevi (Hukkala) Palo
Eevi Palo, 83, of Columbia, MO and formerly of Waukegan, died September 29, 2003 at The Arbors, Bluff Creek, Columbia, MO.
Eevi was born August 26, 1920 in Alavus, Finland, to Edward and Maria Hukkala. The family emigrated to the United States when Eevi was approximately 6 years old.
Eevi was an employee of the Department of Public Aid in Waukegan, retiring from there after approximately 15 years of service. She was a life-long member of the Waukegan Historical Society She was married to Edwin Palo in Waukegan on September 28, 1940. Eevi was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church and had been a member of the Women's Guild of the church.
Along with her husband, she was a member of the Waukegan Finnish Choir, and also appeared in Finnish plays at the Finnish Temperance Hall. They were also involved in a local Square Dance Club, as well as being members of the Swedish Glee Club.
In 1973, following a tragic automobile accident in which her husband was killed, Eevi moved to Columbia, MO to be near her son Nicholas. While in Columbia, she was a member of the Sunshine Senior Bowling League and the Bohemia Ragtime Society. She loved to travel, and with her friend Inez Schmidt, visited the European countries of Finland, Austria, Germany and Italy, plus Hawaii, and including trips within the United States.
Surviving are her sons Nicholas Palo and Timothy (Linda) Palo, grandson Christopher Edwin, great-granddaughter Kim, step-grandchildren Cody and Adrianne, plus numerous cousins in the United States and Finland. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Edwin.
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Chapel at North Shore Garden of Memories, 18th St. and Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL, with Pastor Jeffrey Koth officiating. Interment will follow the services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3350 North Delany Road, Waukegan, IL 60087.

Herbert L. Rodgers
Herbert L. Rodgers was born on June 11, 1925 to the late Bessy and Isaac Rodgers of Grayson County, Texas. He attended public school in Smithville, Texas. He served in the United States Army from the years of 1943 to 1945 with honorable discharge. He resided in Waukegan, Illinois where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal Savior, serving as a Junior Deacon under the leadership of Rev. J. N. Lightfoot, Pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church.
He was employed at Abbott Laboratories until relocating to Texas City, Texas. He united with Progressive Baptist Church under Dr. John H. Bridges. In the year of 1983, the Lord called Deacon Rodgers to teach and minister His holy word. He became an interim under the leadership of Dr. John H. Bridges while attending Theology College of Conroe where he received his Doctor Degree of Divinity (D.D.D.) after which he was ordained and installed as Associate Minister in the year of 1984 under the ordinance of Dr. John H. Bridges, later becoming Associate Pastor at Little Rock Baptist Church under Dr. Johnson.
Rev. Rodgers relocated to Nacogdoches, Texas where he united with Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and worked as an Associate Pastor there under Rev. Lance Williams. On June 11, 1986, he was united in holy matrimony to Nancy Davis. Rev. Rodgers and wife Nancy relocated to Smithville, Texas in 1986 where he became Associate Pastor at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. In 1991, Rev. Rodgers was called as Pastor of Live Oak Grove Baptist Church. There he served as Pastor as well as served as Associate and employee or United Methodist Church. He served at both positions for 13 years until his health failed.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Nancy Davis Rodgers of Smithville, Texas; his son, Robert (Sandra) Rodgers of Waukegan, Illinois; a sister, Lily M. Bledsoe of Smithville, Texas; an adopted brother, Lonnid Kennedy of LaMarque, TX; an adopted sister, Dorothy Parks of San Francisco, CA; three nieces, Annie Mae Siemse of Houston, TX, Johnnie Mae Moulton of Killeen, TX and Patricia Whitaker of Vallejo, CA; five nephews, John Smith Whitaker, Herbert L. Whitaker and Gill Whitaker all of Waukegan, IL, Lawrence V. Whitaker of Kenosha, WI and Jerome Whitaker of Killeen, TX; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Monday, October 6, 2003 fro 7 to 8 PM at MARRS-JONES FUNERAL HOME, 104 Olive St., Smithville, TX, 78957-0148 512-237-2425.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, 400 Walker St, Smithville, TX, 78957-0148.

Edward A. Walker
Edward A. Walker, 81, of Long Lake, IL passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the Riverbluff Nursing Home in Rockford, IL. He was born in Waukegan, IL on September 20, 1922, the son of the late William and Alice (nee Hellquist) Walker. Ed grew up on the family farm in Lake Villa and spent most of his adult life in Long Lake. He was an entrepreneur, owning his own business in Lake County, The Eagle Sewer Construction Co. An active Republican, he served as a Precinct Committeeman in Ingleside. He was a former Trustee of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Lake, a past member of the Gages Lake Snowmobile Club and the Northeastern Illinois Association of Snowmobile Clubs. On November 3, 1951, he married Beverly Jean Nehmer.
He is survived by his children, Rev. Sarah Walker of Clarinda, IA, Edward Walker Jr. of Roscoe, IL and David (Catherine) Walker of Lovettsville, VA; his granddaughters, Tricia Janes of Harrisburg, PA and Amy and Lindsay Walker of Lovettsville, VA; and grandson, Brian Savage of Fox Lake; his brothers, Ron Walker and Ollie (Laura) Walker of Lake Villa; and sisters, June (Richard) Grutzmacher of Port Richey, FL and Marge Lucas of Libertyville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Jean; brothers, George and William Walker; and nephew, William Ronald Walker.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM on Monday, October 6, 2003 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 25519 W. Highway 134, Long Lake, IL (847-546-2109). Interment will be at Sand Lake cemetery, Lake Villa. Visitation will be Sunday, from 2 to 6 PM at RINGA FUNERAL HOME, 122 S. Rte. 83, Lake Villa, IL and Monday at the church from 9 to 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA, 22311.

Jerome Bishop "Jerry"
Jerome Bishop, 64 of Zion, died on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at home. He was born October 2, 1940 in Fremont, NE and married Diane Holmquist in 1978 in Waukegan.
Jerry was a retired United States Naval Chief Petty Officer, and managed the Waukegan Coin and Supply Shop in Waukegan for 25 years. Jerry was a past Flotilla Commander of the Waukegan Coast Guard Auxiliary #3-5, a member of the Zion Moose, and a member of the Lake County Coin Club. He enjoyed fishing, boating, traveling, darts and was a racing fan. Jerry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Diane; one daughter, Joy (Tom) Angelos of Waukegan; two sons, Jerry (Sherry) Bishop of Warrens, WI and Jeffrey Bishop of Denver, CO; and four grandchildren, Christopher, Erica, Amy and Sarah Angelos.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Vernon and Mildred Bishop.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 8, 2004 at 7:30 PM at CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Rd., Zion. Interment is private for the family. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM, until the time of services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Lake County Regional Office, 100 Tri-State International, Suite 125, Lincolnshire, IL 60069.

Danielle Decicco
Danielle Decicco, 31, from Antioch passed away on October 3, 2004 in Libertyville, IL. Born October 5, 1972 in Waukegan to Michael McMeins Sr. and Susan (nee Behnke) Keating. She was a member of the Calvary Christian Center in Lake Villa.
Danielle is survived by her children, Brooklyn Paige Decicco, Andrew Patrick and Olivia Susan Beeks; father Michael (Kathy) McMeins Sr. of Roselle; mother, Susan Keating of Round Lake Park; her step father, Patrick J. Keating Sr.; her fiance, Richard A. Beeks; siblings, Michael (Lisa) McMeins Jr of Fergus Falls, MN, Patrick Joseph Keating Jr. of Antioch, Michelle Rene McMeins of Crystal Lake and Jonathan Paul McMeins of Roselle. She was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan Decicco in 1994.
Services for Danielle will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at the Calvary Christian Center, 134 W. Monaville Road, Lake Villa, IL, 60046 with Pastor Robert Eby officiating. There will be a visitation from 10 to 11 AM at the church prior to the service. Friends of the family may visit from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at the STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, LTD, 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL, 60030.

Gladys Royce Drost
Gladys Royce Drost, 82, of Zion, died on Monday, October 4, 2004 at the North Chicago Veterans Administration Medical Center. She was born November 6, 1921 in Langlade County, Wisconsin and came to the Zion area in the 1940's.
She was employed at Warwick Electronics in Zion for many years and later retired in 1977 from Victory Memorial Hospital. As a veteran, Gladys served in World War II with the Women's Army Corp. (WAC) and she belonged to the Winthrop Harbor V.F.W., the White Lake, Wisconsin American Legion and the WAC Vets. She was also a long time member of the Zion-Benton Women of the Moose.
Survivors include two daughters, Terry Allen of Antioch and Lynnette (Brian) Greorgeson of Zion; four grandchildren, Melissa Allen Werve, Jeffrey Drost, Jaclyn Drost and Angela Clark; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Patrick Werve; two sisters, Millicent "Boots" (William) Sunderland of Monroe, MI and Betty Bylaska of Antigo, WI; one brother, Dennis (Geraldine) Royce of Mohawk, MI; sisters-in-law, Marian Royce of Zion and Janet Royce of Antigo, WI; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard in 1989; son, Barry in 1986; granddaughter, Deanna Allen in 2002; five brothers, Avery, Arnold, Deward, Irvin and William "Dearl" Royce; four sisters, Ethel Bealmear, Margaret Lambert, Mayme Drost and Joy "Pinky" Krause; two infant brothers; and her parents, Robert and Bertha (nee Choate) Royce.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2004 from 9:00 AM, until 12:00 Noon at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, with Women of the Moose service at 12:00 Noon and private cremation to follow. Memorial donations to either Spinoza Bears, c/o Zion-Benton Women of the Moose, P.O. Box 52, Zion, IL 60099 or V.A. Medical Center Community Affairs, ATTN: Women's Veteran's Program, 3001 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL 60064 have been suggested.
