Rebecca Ann Hawn
Rebecca Ann (nee Boyd) Hawn, 76, went to be with the Lord on November 11, 2002 under Hospice care at Westmoreland Nursing Home. She was a native of Newport News, VA. She had been in Stuart, FL for the past 20 years, and previously resided in Waukegan and Lake Bluff for 45 years. She was married to Charles W. Hawn for 49 years, and had two sons Mark and Paul of Waukegan. She worked as a Realtor for Best Realty, as a receptionist for Dr. Creath, and served as a volunteer at Victory Memorial Hospital. She was a friend to many and loved to fish, golf, garden and generally make things a little better whereever she could. People will be eating from the grapefruit, lime and avocado trees she planted for many years to come.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charley in 1994, 3 brothers and a sister.
She will be missed by her survivors, Mark (Cindy) and Paul (Linda), three grandchildren, Audrey, Nick and Melissa, and a great grandchild Rose, all of Waukegan and her two sisters Virginia and Madeline of Alexandria, VA.
Services will be private. Donations may be made to the charity of donors choice.

Reverend William Ivy Jenkins
The Reverend William Ivy Jenkins was born on September 16, 1910 near Lake Village, Arkansas, the son of Aaron and Lyddia Warren Jenkins. He confessed Christ as Savior and Lord at a young age, and attended Utica Christian Institute. After graduation from Southern Christian Institute, Utica, Mississippi, he united in marriage with Louise Elnora Lampkins Jenkins in 1934. They made their home in North Chicago, Illinois with their nine children Lillian Ivy, Gwendolyn Louise, Izzetta, Deborah Julia, William Ivy Jr., Rosie Aletha, Mary Frances, James Robert and Ruth Elnora.
Reverend Jenkins served as Pastor of Gideon Baptist Church, Waukegan, Illinois from 1938-1939. He then founded the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Waukegan, Illinois in 1940, and served as Pastor until 1952, when he became Pastor of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Michigan City, Indiana. In 1953, he returned to New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Pastor until his retirement in 2001.
Reverend Jenkins graduated from Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Psychology in 1946. He also attended Chicago Teachers College, National College of Education, University of Illinois, Chicago, McCormick Theological Seminary, and Garrett Biblical Institute. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Education from Roosevelt University, Chicago, Illinois in 1964. He also received a Certificate in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Chicago, in 1966.
Reverend Jenkins taught at a number of schools in the Chicago area, and served and participated in a host of professional, community and social organizations including: the Greater New Era Baptist District Association of the National Baptist Convention U.S.A. Inc.; the North Shore Baptist Ministers Alliance; the National Education Association; the Alumni Associations of Lake Forest College and Roosevelt University; the NAACP; Past Master of the Rufus Mitchell Lodge No. 107 F and AM, PHA. (1948-1950); and Past Patron of Emblem Chapter No. 140, OES, PHA (1951).
Reverend Jenkins departed this life on Saturday, November 9, 2002. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Aaron and Lyddia Jenkins; his sisters Alberta and Rosie; his brothers Lacy, James and Levi; his wife Louise Elnora Lampkins Jenkins (1983); his second wife Lauretta B. Christmas Jenkins (1986-1997); and three children, Izzetta, Rosie, and Deborah Julia Jenkins Powell.
He leaves to mourn six children, The Reverend Lillian Ivy Gibbs of Chicago, Gwendolyn L. Lambert of North Chicago, William Ivy Jenkins, Jr. (Cassandra) of Glendale, Wisconsin, Mary Frances Jenkins Hood of North Chicago, James R. Jenkins (Anita) of Midland, Michigan, Ruth Elnora Walker (Curtis) of Atlantic Beach, Florida; one sister Magnolia Lampkins (Lewis) of Waukegan; sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. He also leaves the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Family, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Home Going Celebration will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2002 at the Shiloh Baptist Church, 800 S. Genesee Street, Waukegan, IL. Pastor Walstone Francis, Officiating. Interment will be at Warren cemetery, Grand Avenue and cemetery Road, Gurnee, Illinois. Visitation will be Friday, November 15, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with Masonic Rites from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, and Saturday, November 16, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Reverend Jenkins should be made to the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 1146 Greenfield Ave., Waukegan, Illinois 60085.

Mavis L. LaRocke
Mavis L. LaRocke, 77 years old, of Grayslake, formerly of Round Lake, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at her home. She was born August 16, 1925 in Chicago, the daughter of the late Edward and Greta (Arnold) Riley. In 1942, she graduated and was class vocalist at John Marshall High School. Mavis was a member of the Chicago Peoples Opera Company, sang in the choir and special sextet group at Wilbur Wright Jr. College under the direction of Erheart Burstrasser, and sang with the adult choir of St. Thomas of Quianias Church under the direction of Josephine Rice. Her singing continued as role of Madame Butterfly, Margarette and Valentino from opera Foust.
She owned and operated Mom's Drive-In in Paddock Lake from 1970 until 1975 and later retired after 10 years of service from the Illinois Student Assistant Commission on October 1, 1991. Mavis was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lake Villa.
On November 30, 1944 she married Charles J. LaRocke in Chicago and he preceded her in death on February 23, 1987.
Survivors include one son, Charles LaRocke, Jr. of Round Lake Beach, IL; one daughter, Nora (William) Winkowski of Grayslake, IL; eight grandchildren: Doug, Michelle, Brent, Sharon, Billy, Tony, Shannon, and Kendra; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret Crummey in 1984; one grandson, Chad, in 1978; and her sweetheart, Henry Jasper, Sr., in 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2002 at STRANG FUNERAL HOME of ANTIOCH, 1055 Main St. (Rt. 83), Antioch, IL. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Libertyville, IL. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday.

Eileen M. Miller
Eileen M. Miller, 63, of Zion died on Thursday, November 14, 2002 at Midwestern Regional Medical Center, Zion.
Eileen was born August 15, 1939 in Milwaukee and came to Zion in 1975. She was previously employed at Sheridan Health Care Center in Zion and she belonged to the Zion-Benton Women of the Moose and the Polish Legion of American Veterans Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her pets.
Survivors include her husband, Robert J. Miller; children Kim Whiteside of Kenosha, Greg (Suzanne) Whiteside of Kenosha, Sheri Whiteside of Zion, Mary (Jeff) Wickert of Milwaukee and Mark Miller of Milwaukee; grandchildren Shawntel Carpenter, Joseph Dawkins, Bobby Whiteside, Rocky Whiteside, Damian Porter, Rachel Porter and Cory Porter; 3 1/2 great-grandchildren; two brothers Harold (Jean) Spatt of Menominee Falls, Wisconsin and Roger (Beverly) Spatt of Bollingbrook, Illinois; and one sister Linda (Ray) Deshong of New Berlin, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her first husband George O. Whiteside, by one sister Marilyn Arle, by one step-son Mike Miller and by her father and mother Sigmund and Ruth Spatt.
Visitation will be Monday, November 18, 2002 from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Funeral services will follow on Monday at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Bill Oestreich of Sheridan Health Care Center officiating and with private cremation to follow. The family would like to thank the Sheridan Health Care Center for the love and care given to Eileen.

Gwendolyn E. "Gwen" Myers
Gwendolyn E. "Gwen" Myers, 70, of Olney, IL, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2002 at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, IL of a heart related illness. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 7, 1932 to Eric D. Bright and Laura Otis. She married Larry D. Meyers, Sr. on June 28, 1958 who preceded her in death on March 17, 2002. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Waukegan. Gwen's hobbies included knitting, sewing and cooking.
Survivors include 5 sons Richard L. (Deb) Metcalf of Delavan, WI, Robert P. Metcalf of Zion, Larry D. (Dianna) Myers, Jr. of Lake Villa, Garry D. Myers of Indianapolis, IN and Danny L. (Shelly) Myers of Zion; 2 daughters Laura R. (Bill) Longmire of Wildwood and Debra L. (Thomas) Bogaert of Mishawaka, IN; a sister Lois E. Lother of Zion; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother L.D. Bright and a sister Virginia Larsen.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2002 at PULLIAM FUNERAL HOME in Oblong, IL with Brother Dee Wolfe Officiating. Interment will be in Oblong cemetery at a later date following cremation. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to American Heart Association.

Vincent C. Pape Jr.
Memorial service for Vincent C. Pape Jr., 61 of Mundelein is 8 PM Friday, November 15, 2002 at the KRISTAN FUNERAL HOME, P.C., 219 W. Maple Ave. (2 blocks west of Rt. 45 on Rt. 176) Mundelein. He was born May 22, 1941 in Milwaukee, WI and died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at home. Vincent was a graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee. He was employed for 25 years with Lake County and retired as Risk Manager.
He is survived by his wife Elaine (nee Curbis), his daughter Cheryl (Ben) Reyes of Sycamore, IL, son Steven (Kim) Pape of Arlington Heights, IL, 2 sisters Eileen Pape, Melody Schuster and 2 grandchildren Collin and Sydney.
Visitation is from 4-8 PM Friday prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials to Star Hospice C/O St. Therese Medical Center, 2615 Washington St., Waukegan, IL 60085 or Marytown, 1600 W. Lila Marie Ruffolo
A memorial service will be held Sunday Dec. 1, 2002 from 2pm-4pm at Serenity House, 1103 West Park Ave in Libertyville, Illinois for Lila Marie Ruffolo of Little Rock, Arkansas who died instantly in a car wreck on Friday Nov. 1, 2002 with her friend and true love Dan Baker.
She was born June 12, 1978 in Highland Park, Illinois and grew up in Highland Park and Gurnee, Illinois. She was a 1996 graduate of Warren Township High School and a 1998 graduate at Meredith Manor Equestrian Center in Waverly, West Virginia. She had attended University of Arkansas at Little Rock and was a horse trainer and riding instructor. Lila and Danny were building a horse ranch in Roland, Arkansas. She was a member of the National Cutting Horse Association and The American Quarter Horse Association.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Jenny and Rick Selle of Gurnee, Illinois; her father Ron Ruffolo of Highland Park, Illinois; maternal grandparents Fritz and Diana Runyon of Grayslake, Illinois; paternal grandparents Don and Glenna Ruffolo of Highland Park, Illinois; step-grandparents Doretta and Al Taylor of McHenry, Illinois; maternal great-grandmother Martha Hills Jordan of Madison, Wisconsin and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She loved all people and animals, and they loved her.
Visitation was Mon. Nov 4. at Rolling Chenal Funeral Home and services were Tues. Nov. 5 at First Baptist Church in Little Rock. Burial was at Natural Steps cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Illinois soon. Donations can be made to Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter. 2200 Riverwoods Rd., Riverwoods, IL 60015 to honor Lila's love and life.

Joyce R. Scherer
Joyce R. Scherer, 78, of Wildwood passed away on November 13, 2002 at Lake Forest Hospital. She was born December 7, 1923 on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Neopit, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Arthur W. and Mary (nee Soman) Richards. She was an avid bingo player, and worked as a nursing assistant.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Jack R. Scherer whom she married August 15, 1953; her daughter, Kristine (Randy) Petlak of Wildwood; her son, Jack K. (Stephanie) Scherer of Kenosha, WI; grandchildren, Nikole, Lindsey, Josh, and Austin Petlak of Wildwood, and Loren of Kenosha, WI.
Funeral services will be held at 8:00 PM on Friday, November 15, 2002 at STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, LTD., 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake, IL 60030. Interment will be privately held in Neopit, WI. Family and friends may visit from 4:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the family. Ken "Smitty" Smith
Ken "Smitty" Smith, 79 years old of Round Lake Beach, formerly of Lake Villa passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Hillcrest Nursing Center, Round Lake Beach, IL. He was born August 7, 1923 in Denver, Colorado the son of the late Orlie and Helen (Metzger) Smith. He had lived in Lake Villa for 26 years moving to Florida and Kentucky and later to Round Lake in 1997. In 1986 he retired as a watchmaker and had owned McGuire Jewelry in Grayslake for thirteen years, later worked for the former Hahn Jewelers in Antioch and for fifteen years at Johnson Jewelers in Antioch. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed working on antique cars and restoring his Ford Model A which he referred to as "his baby". He also served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II. On October 4, 1949 he married Marian D. Perri in Waukegan, IL.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; two sons, Gerald C. (Lois) Smith of Batavia, IL and Kenneth C. (Jennifer) Smith of Lake Villa, IL and three grandchildren, Tammy A., Gerald W., and Michael Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Ronald.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, November 18, 2002 at STRANG FUNERAL HOME OF ANTIOCH 1055 Main St. (Rte 83) Antioch. Interment with military honors will be in Highland Memorial Park, Libertyville, IL. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 PM Sunday.

Michael V. Springer, Jr.
Michael V. "Mikey" Springer Jr., 21, of Zion died on Sunday, November 10, 2002 at Resurrection Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois.
Mikey was born December 22, 1980 in Waukegan and graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School the Class of 1999. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Winthrop Harbor where he also played drums and belonged to a small Wednesday night bible study group. This past summer he worked at Northpoint Marina and two weeks ago began working at Hewitt. He was also a member of the Zion-Benton Moose Lodge #667 and he was a member of and volunteered much time to the Lake County Republican Federation. Mikey loved music of all kinds and participated in School Choirs through Jr. High and he was an avid Packer fan.
Mikey loved is family, especially his beloved Fiance, Melissa Kramer and as a devoted father, his son Dylan Michael Springer. Also surviving are his father Michael V. Springer Sr. of Winthrop Harbor and his mother Tammy Y. (Billy) Ruple also of Winthrop Harbor; brothers and sisters Kasey N. (Rob) Pogue of Libertyville, Michelle L. Springer of Zion and Megan M. Springer and James Branden Ruple both of Winthrop Harbor; maternal grandfather Gary (Maureen) Pospichel of McHenry; maternal grandmother Judith A. (Mike) Doutt of Twentynine Palms, California; maternal great-grandfather Donald Daisy also of Twentynine Palms, California; aunts Karen (Bill) Blanck of Zion, Kim (Jim) Leech of Winthrop Harbor, Terri (Earl) Dillow of Sommers, Wisconsin and Marjorie Griffin of Antioch; uncles Jeff (Linda) Springer of Zion, Rick (Teresa) Pospichel of Pleasant Prairie, Jeff (Stacy) Griffin of McHenry; one nephew Jakob Robert Pogue of Libertyville; future father and mother-in-law Jerry and Carol Kramer of Casper, Wyoming; future sister-in-law Sara (Eric) Dowd of Perry, Iowa; future grandparents-in-law Dan and Jane Kramer of Rapelje, Montana; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one uncle Tom Griffin, by paternal grandparents Clyde and Virginia Springer, by paternal great-grandparents Gertrude and Dowell Kelley and Addaline and Ralph Springer, by maternal great-grandmother Joanne Daisy and by his best friend Daniel Larsen in 1999.
Visitation will be Friday, November 15, 2002 from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, with Moose Services by the Zion-Benton Moose at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16th at 10:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Brown of First Baptist Church of Winthrop Harbor officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established for his son Dylan.

Richard G. Vojtko
Richard G. Vojtko, 72 of Grayslake, formerly of Waukegan, passed away on November 8, 2002 at Libertyville Manor. He was born on March 7, 1930 in Racine, Wisconsin and was a member of the First Christian Church in Gurnee. Dick was a member of the Swedish Glee Club, Naval Reserve, Waukegan Masonic Lodge #78 AF&AM;, Scottish Rite, Medinah Temple Hospital Committee Chanters & Jesters, Lake County Shrine Club and an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He had attended Lake Forest College and was a member of TKE Fraternity. He retired as Assistant Building Commissioner for the City of Waukegan in 1990 after 26 years of service. Prior to working for the City of Waukegan, Dick had worked for Chicago Title & Trust, D.C.F.S., Nauta Realty and Lindberg's Men's Shop in downtown Waukegan. He enjoyed singing with the Glee Club as well as playing golf.
He is survived by his wife Charlene; 1 sister, Julie (Richard M.) Youells of Kenosha, Wisconsin; 2 nephews, Robert B. Young and Richard A. Youells; two loving companions, Sprout and Shado as well as many friends. His parents preceded him in death.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at the First Christian Church, 6080 Gages Lake Road, Gurnee, IL with Rev. T.M. Carroll officiating. Masonic Service will begin at 1:45 PM Tuesday. Interment will be private. Friends may call at the church from 12 Noon till 2:00 PM Tuesday only at the church. Memorials may be made in his name to either the First Christian Church, Medinah Children's Hospital, the Parkinson's Foundation, or to your favorite charity of choice. Arrangements were under the care of the MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF GURNEE, 305 cemetery Road.

Joseph J. Gray
Joseph J. Gray, 89, of Waukegan passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Rolling Hills Manor. He was born May 30, 1914 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was a member of St. Dismas Church, the Waukegan Moose Lodge #706, Fleet Reserve Association, former member of the Waukegan Elks Lodge, member of the American Legion Post #281. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U. S. Navy. He was an avid golfer and gardener and built radios at home. He retired in 1970 from the U.S. Navy Reserve after 35 years of service and then retired from Electronic Supply in 1971 after 30 years of Government Service.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; two sons, Ronald J. (Kay) Gray of Lindenhurst and Richard K. (Pamela) Gray of Port St. Lucie, FL; and four grandchildren, Jodi Lynn, Tami Marie, Brandon Joseph and Ian Robert.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank.
Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday, November 15, 2003 at St. Dismas Church, 2600 Sunset, Waukegan. Entombment Ascension cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Friday and 8 to 9 AM Saturday at MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF GURNEE, 305 cemetery Rd.
