Durell Curtis (Big Rell) Gales
Durell Curtis Gales, 18, of North Chicago, IL passed away on July 20, 2003 in Chicago, IL. He was born June 14, 1985 in Waukegan, IL to birth parents Constance M. Gales and Melvin Kennedy. Durell attended North Chicago Public Schools and was a member of the graduating class of 2003. He was scheduled to leave for Dupage University in August. Durell was an exceptional athlete and his passion was in playing basketball and football.
Durell was dearly loved by all and had a deep, abiding love for his family. He leaves to cherish his memory: Ms. Karen Hill, adopted mother, of Collinsville, MS; father, Melvin (Tasha) Kennedy, Sr. of North Chicago; two grandmothers: Ms Mamie Usher of North Chicago and Ms Bobbie Adams of Collinsville, MS; 5 brothers: Anthony, Shawn, Jordon and Jeffrey of North Chicago, and Melvin Kennedy, Jr. of Mobile, AL; 11 sisters: Latasha, Quineca, Tracey, Quiataya, Latrice, Witney, Ebony, and Jasmine of North Chicago, IL, Aundrea of Collinsville, MS, and Gwendoly and Rosalya of Mobile, AL; 18 nieces and nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at 1 Corinthian MB Church, 1529 Elizabeth Ave., North Chicago. Pastor Eugene Roberson officiating. Interment following at Pineview cemetery, Beach Park, IL. Visitation 10 a.m.; services at 11 a.m.

Dorothy H. Gleiser
Dorothy H. Gleiser, 90, of Lake Forest died July 24, 2003. She was born in Chicago in 1913, as an infant she was brought to Lake County. For some years, her family lived on Brae Burn Farm at Green Bay and Buckley Roads. Since 1922, she has resided in Lake Forest. She was a retired employee of John Griffith, Inc., Lake Forest a Real Estate and Insurance Co.
She was a member of Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois (ESCONI) and the Rollin' Rock Club and held many offices in the Lake County Gem and Mineral Society, Chicago Rocks and Minerals Society and the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies. She was a member of Lake Forest & Libertyville Chapters Order of the Eastern Star, Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Seniors, Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Historical Society, Lake County Museum Association and several conservation and resource preservation organizations.
Miss Gleiser is survived by her brother Robert (Joyce) of Sandpoint, ID; a niece and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Lorenz and Louise Schultz Gleiser. In lieu of flowers contributions would be welcomed by, the Anti Cruelty Society, 157 W. Grand Ave., Chicago, IL 60610 or The Hooved Animal Humane Society, P.O. Box 400, Woodstock, IL 60098. Marie Glogovsky (nee Hall)
Marie Glogovsky, 82, of Tupelo, MS, formerly of Third Lake, IL, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at the Beverly Health Care, Saltillo, MS.
She was born March 2, 1912 in Island Creek, KY and lived in the North Lake County area with her husband, Steve, until his death in 1985. She also worked for a short time at Print-O-Tape Corp.
Marie is survived by her brothers: Roy Hall of Feds Creek, KY, Archie Hall of Green Acres, WA, Cecil Hall of Waukegan, IL, and Elmer Hall of Saltillo, MS; her sisters: Della Barney of Saginaw, MI and Elsie Estep of Clio, WV.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve, in 1985, and a son, Andy, in 1983; also a brother, Bill Hall and a sister, Jessie Munson.
Chapel services and interment will be at Ascension cemetery, Libertyville on Monday, July 28, at 2:30 p.m.
Local arrangements were entrusted to the Salata-Gurnee Funeral Home.

Michael John Haste
Michael John Haste, 56, of Park City, IL, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at his home. He was born October 1, 1946 in Elgin, IL, was a 1964 graduate of Mundelein High School and has lived in Park City for the past 25 years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Vietnam War.
Surviving are his brother Thomas (Carol) Haste of Libertyville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Haste and Anna Mae Ferguson and by his brother David.
A graveside service was held on Friday, July 25 at the Lakeside cemetery in Libertyville. Arrangements were by the BURNETT-DANE FUNERAL HOME in Libertyville. Info: 847-362-3009.

John Lukas
John Lukas, 90 of Gurnee and formerly of Waukegan, died Friday, July 25, 2003 at his home with his family at his side.
John was born April 22, 1913 in Bentleyville, PA and came to this area at age eight and farmed his entire adult life.
He attended Gurnee and Waukegan schools and was a graduate of Waukegan High School in 1933. married Dorothy E. Lystlund July 10, 1937 at Immaculate Conception Church, Waukegan. He also worked at Chicago Hardware Foundry and Stone Container Corp. and retired in 1973. He is a member of Waukegan Moose Lodge 706.
John is survived by his son John P. Lukas of Wadsworth; two daughters, Dianne (Victor) Bartels of Wadsworth and Sharron (Clarence) Clausen of Woodworth, WI; a sister, Violet (Novak) Usa of Gurnee; a daughter-in-law, Marva Lukas of Round Lake; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, January 3, 1990; his parents, Peter and Anna (Aliositis) Lukas; a sister, Anne Whiteley and two brothers, August Novak and Peter Lukas, Sr.
Visitation will be Tuesday July 29 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with 12:30 p.m. services at the SALATA GURNEE FUNERAL HOME, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee, IL.
Interment will follow at Warren cemetery. Donations to your church or favorite charity in his name.

Glenn Ione Root
Glenn Ione Root (nee Schroeder) 88, of Waukegan, died Monday, July 21, 2003 at the Winchester House, Libertyville. She was born June 29, 1915 in Chicago and lived in the Waukegan area all of her life. She worked as a sales clerk at the Wiebolt's and Montgomery Wards Department Store for many years.
Glenn is survived by her son, Robert Root of Waukegan, a brother Howard (Alice) Schroeder of Newburgh, IN, two sisters, Jane (the late Arthur) Kilponen of Park City, and Marlene (Lyle) Snyder of Zion, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Preston C. Root and her parents Walter and Anna (Barnes) Schroeder.
Friends may call Monday, July 28 from 12:00 PM till time of the memorial service at 12:30 PM at the GURNEE/SALATA FUNERAL HOME, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee. Interment will be private at North Shore Garden of Memories. Donations to the Ann M. Kiley Center, Waukegan in her memory would be appreciated.

Geleva E. Schmidt
Geleva E. Schmidt, age 87, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL. A resident of Hillcrest Nursing Home in Round Lake Beach the past few years. Geleva was a former resident of Homosassa, FL and Round Lake. She was a past member of the Round Lake Pension Police Board and of Calvary Presbyterian Church of Round Lake. Geleva is survived by her daughters, Joanne (Alvin) Hepner of Round Lake and Marie (Thomas) Larson of Lowell, AK; her sisters, Viva Hicks of Hurley, SD and Elaine (Chester) Smith of Bedford, MA; her six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl on July 20, 1984 and four children, Carl Schmidt Jr., and three children in infancy. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030. Reverend Lisle Kauffman will be officiating. Interment will be held immediately after the service at Avon Centre cemetery. Friends of the family may visit on Monday, July 28, 2003 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Jo R. Smith
Jo R. Smith, nee Rieser, age 82 of Gurnee, IL (Manzanillo, Mexico) passed away July 6, 2003.
She was the devoted wife of the late Robert Smith; loving mother of Diann Sickles and Robert W. Smith Jr. (Martha); dear grandmother of Todd (Debra) Smith, Rob (Sherri) Sickles, Jamie Sickles and Sean Smith; proud great-grandmother of Brianna and Derek Smith; fond sister of Bertha Fanella and the late Esther Supan.
Mrs. Smith loved adventure and travel, camping through North and South America and traveling through Africa, Asia and Europe. Community was important to her, being involved with Eastern Star, Lioness, Red Cross of Manzanillo and other community activities. A masterful card player, an accomplished crocheter and great entertainer, she lived life to the fullest. Her latest enjoyable endeavor was organizing the "High Steppin Hatters" Red Hat Group of Gurnee. Her greatest passions were her great-grandchildren, family and friends. She will be missed.

Earl G. Swanson
Earl G. Swanson, 83, of North Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on July 19, 2003. He was born March 26, 1920, in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of the late John and Hilma Swanson.
Earl served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Abbott Laboratories, retiring after 42 years of service.
He was a life member of the American Legion, Sharvin Post 397 of North Chicago, Illinois. Earl served as 10th District Commander of the American Legion during 1986 to 1987. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks of Fort Myers, and a Past President of the Lake County Safety Association. Earl was a member of the First Christian Church, Gurnee, Illinois.
Earl is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jane A. Swanson; a daughter, Faye (Sammie) Carter; two grandsons, William (Angie) Carter and Dale (Cveta) Carter; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Isabelle Carter; and two sisters, Katherine Carlson and Mabel Anderson. Two brothers, Milburn and Raymond Swanson preceded Earl in death.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 28th, at 10:30 a.m. at MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF GURNEE, 305 cemetery Rd., with the Reverend T. Carrell officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, July 27th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Louis Vaughn Sr.
Louis Vaughn Sr., 64, of San Diego, CA passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at Sun Ridge Home. He was born to Annie Mae Johnson and Willis Vaughn on October 9, 1938 in Arcola, MS. He was employed at U.S. Steel Corp. for 26 years where he later retired. He graduated from Waukegan High School and later attended college at UCLA Medical School where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Denton.
He is survived by one son, Louis (Shelia) Vaughn Jr. of Corpus Christi, TX, three daughters, Antoinette (Ronald) Andrews of Gary, IN, Theresea (LaRunce) Moffett of San Diego, CA and Regina Vaughn of Gary, IN, two sisters Lillian (Kenneth) Hadley, Roberta (Milton) Prewitt, 19 grandchildren and 6 1/2 great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.
Louis was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, one daughter Linda Vaughn, one grandson Allen Henley, three brothers Bill, Ernest, and Johnny Vaughn, and his parents.
Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Jesus Name Apostolic Church, 208 Lake St. and Genesee St. Waukegan, IL. Pastor Benny L. Mabon officiating. He will be laid to rest in Mount Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, IL. Betsy Rose Wachter
Betsy Rose Wachter, 45. Beloved daughter of Ann nee Benson and the late Dr. Ronald Wachter. Loving sister of Wendy (Eddie) Reed and Leslie (Gary) Atkins. Cherished aunt of Jenna, Grey and Dani. Graduate of Lincoln College, Lincoln, IL. She was long time employee of the Waukegan Township Office.

Harold E. Weiss
Harold E. Weiss, age 67, passed away Thursday, July 24th 2003 at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Born December 31st 1935 in Kent, Ohio to the late Harold E. and V. Marie (nee Stump) Weiss Sr. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post #4308 and was awarded the U.S. Army Bronze Star for service in the Korean War. married June 26th 1954 to the late Carol Ann Kneuss who passed away December 20th 2002.
He is survived by his son Charles (Keri) and daughter Debra (Robert) Schooley. Grandfather of Alex, Clint, Justin, and Anthony Weiss, Christopher Ward, Michael Pohlman, and Thomas Schooley. Great grandfather of Brian Weiss and Cahleb Szmalewski. Sister Roberta (Raymond) Svacha, nephews Shawn (Jennie) Svacha, Ryan and Troy Svacha. Great Niece Jia Svacha.

Marie Barbara Frederick Whitehead
Marie Barbara Frederick Whitehead died April 26, 2003 in Portland, OR. She was born June 9, 1906 on the family homestead in Fremont Center, IL to John and Ella Frederick. She would have been 97 years old on her next birthday.
Survived by her daughters Barbara Niedermeyer and Shirley Whitehead, both of Portland, OR; her son William Whitehead of Leesburg, FL; her sister Genevieve Mors of Libertyville; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband Bernard Miller, her second husband Elisha Whitehead and her daughter, Bernita "Pat" Roach.

Edna Loree Cooprider, age 79, of Homosassa, FL died Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at her residence in Homosassa under the care of her loving family and Hospice of Citrus County. She was born February 2, 1923 in Logansport, IN to Cecil Hobart and Edna (Swaney) Miller. She came to Homosassa 20 years ago from Waukegan, IL. She was Protestant and a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. She enjoyed Bird Watching, Gardening, Bowling and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by one grandchild and one great grandchild. She is survived by two sons, James Cooprider and wife Margie of Seneca, SC and Kenneth Cooprider and wife Betty of Crystal River, FL. Two daughters Wanda Stanford and husband Harold of Homosassa, and Janet Huff and husband Roger of Bowling Green, KY. 3 brothers Dale Miller of Waukegan, IL, Glen Miller of Bartlett, IL and Allan Miller of Lindenhurst, IL. 6 sisters, Lois Dudley of Taylorville, IL, Ina Bailey of Mt. Home, AR, Norma Simon of Vian, OK, Dolores Zika of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Marcia Cunningham of Oakland, AR, and Nancy Elsbury of Bradsworth, IL. 11 Grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Albert Gonzales
Albert Gonzales, of Camp Springs, MD, formerly of Waukegan passed away July 19 2002 after a lengthy illness. He was born August 6, 1928 in Ancona, IL to Joseph and Sebera Gonzalez. He was raised and educated in Waukegan and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Corps serving from 1946 to 1949. He was a project engineer for the U.S. government at the Naval Electronics Systems Engineering from which he retired after over 40 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post #41 and enjoyed golf and traveling.
He is survived by his wife Beda (Solis) Gonzales of Camp Springs, MD; 2 sisters, Mary Gallegos of Gurnee, IL and Helen (Guadalupe) Salazar of Coal City, IL; 3 brothers, Frank (Jessie) Gonzalez of Waukegan, Pipes (Nina) Gonzales of Stockton, CA and Pete (Myra) Gonsalez of Round Lake Beach, IL; sisters in law, Espie Gonzales of Waukegan, Rose (Norman) Sladen of Pleasant Hills, CA; 4 brothers in law, Mack Thompson of Gurnee, Arnie Solis of Silver Springs, MD, Marty (Evie) Solis of Annapolis, MD and Joe Solis of Lake Villa, IL; and numerous nieces, nephews and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Joseph "Jimmy" Gonzales and John Gonzalez; a sister Virginia Thompson and several infant brothers.
Visitation will be Friday, July 26, 2002 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the MARSH FUNERAL HOME OF WAUKEGAN, 1521 Washington St. Funeral services are at 10:00 AM Saturday at the funeral home. James Korsek
James Korsek, age 69, passed away Tuesday, July 23 in Chicago. He was a member of Gages Lake Bible Church.
He was survived by his daughter Barbara Korsek of Round Lake Beach; his sisters Vera Diamond of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Helen Silbernagel of Grand Island, FL; his sister-in-law Cheryl Olson of Round Lake Beach and his nephews Bob (Nancy) Rodriguez of Chicago, IL and Don Rodriguez of Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice (nee Olson) in 1999 whom he wed in May 1971 in Chicago, IL.
The funeral services are scheduled for Friday July 26 at 11:00 a.m. at STRANG FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake, IL 60030. Reverend Ed Abbott will be officiating. Friends of the family may visit from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 25 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be given to the American Cancer Society, 1300 N. Steven Todd Landsverk
Steven Todd Landsverk, 40, of Grayslake, born March 22, 1962, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago.
He waged a valiant and courageous fight against PSC liver disease and cancer. Steven was a 1980 graduate of Carmel High School. He was a partner and owner of Jack-Son Auto Sales in Waukegan, along with his Dad Don and brother Erian.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne (Hebior) and sons Eric and Jack of Grayslake; his parents, Donald and Mavis (Johnson) Landsverk of Wadsworth; three brothers, Scott (Renee) of Lindenhurst, Stuart (Julie) of Wisconsin, and Brian (Lori) of Gurnee; one sister, Connie (Bob) Besanson; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; his in-laws Ray and Carol Hebior, Pat and Irv Jones; brother-in-law Sean (Karen) Hebior and many loving friends.
He was a very loving son, husband, father and friend and will sadly be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Valerie Lerm, George Johnson, Doris and John Landsverk.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Family Church, 450 Keller Ave., Waukegan at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2002. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at MARSH FUNERAL HOME, 305 cemetery Rd., Gurnee (847) 336-0127 and on Monday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Liver Foundation-Illinois Chapter, 27 E. Monroe, Suite 700A, Chicago, IL 60603 or to an educational fund for his sons Eric and Jack.
