Betty Coventry
Services for Betty Jane Coventry, 84, of Findlay were held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Lockart and Sons Funeral Home in Findlay. Burial will be at a later date.
She died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 in her home.
Born Oct. 1, 1916 in Findlay, she was a daughter of Glen L. and Mary James Coventry. She was a graduate of Findlay High School and Easter Illinois University and received a master’s in elementary education degree from the University of Illinois. She taught in rural schools in Shelby County, the Blue Mound Grade School and Lowell School in Mattoon. She was a member of the Coles County Retired Teachers Assn., the Illinois Education Assn. and the Shelby County Historical Society.
Memorials to the Shelby County Historical Society are suggested.

Sammy Dragoo
Services for Sammy H. Dragoo, 58, of Milmine were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Roux-Hinds Funeral Home in Bement. Burial, with military rites, was in the Bement Cemetery.
He died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001. He was a truck driver and a member of the Champaign County Men’s Bowling Assn. and the American Legion Post in Bement. He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; sons, Todd A. of Milmine and Scott B. of Springfield; daughter, Rachel A. Betzler of Sullivan; brother, F. Bill of Springfield; and sister, Mary Fernandez of Vera Cruz, Mexico.
One sister preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorials to the National Bowlers Assn. Hall of Fame.

Jean Goetz
Jean Goetz, 78, of Bethany died at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 in thhe Sullivan Health Care Center.
Arrangements are incomplete in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Bethany.

Charles Macklin
Services for Charles Robert Macklin, 69, of Apopka, Fla. were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home in Mt. Zion. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
The former Decatur resident died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 in the Florida Hospital in Altamonte Springs.
Born Aug. 14, 1931 in Moweaqua, he was the son of Charles Joseph and Ruth E. Weakly Macklin. He retired as a machinist after 38 years for the Mueller Co. He married Mary June Macklin in 1961, and she died May 12, 1990.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Gordon of Altamonte Springs, Fla. and Ronald Gordon of Pasley, Fla.; daughter, Mrs. Mike (Twyla) Gordon-Timmons of Ramsey; sisters, Eileen Cotner of Bethany, Mrs. Ralph (Clara) Smith of Decatur and Mrs. Don (Sharon) Holeman of Mt. Zion; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
One daughter and one sister preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Earl Meece
Earl F. Meece, 91, of Lovington, died at 10:49 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Born-Wikoff Funeral Home in Atwood with visitation at 1 p.m.
Born Oct. 18, 1908 in Moultrie County, he was a son of Frank and Ellen Landgrebe Meece. He retired after farming east of Hammond with his brother for many years and had worked in Chicago. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Pierson Station and Elks 401 in Decatur, was a Piatt County tax assessor and a member of the Hammond Park Board. He married Marie L. Smith Aug. 20, 1965, and she died Feb. 7, 1999.
He is survived by a brother, Elmer Meece of Friendship Hill Retirement Center in Lovington.
Four sisters preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to the Friendship Hill Retirement Center in Lovington or to the donor’s choice.

Ruth Monroe
Ruth L. Monroe, 90, of Moweaqua died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 in Shelbyville Manor in Shelbyville.
Services for the former Sullivan resident are incomplete at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Bethany.

Evelyn Sharp
Evelyn Sharp, 70, of Sullivan died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001.
Arrangements for the former Clay City resident are incomplete in the Summer-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City.

‘Jim’ Wilkinson
James S. "Jim" Wilkinson, 87, of Yavapai County, Ariz. died Jan. 6, 2001 in Prescott, Ariz.
Services will be held at noon Friday in the Humboldt Bible Church in Humboldt, Ariz. with visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Memory Chapel in Prescott.
He was born Aug. 17, 1913 in Bethany.
He attended the University of Illinois and began his business career working in the family lumber yards and several other central Illinois towns. He moved permanently to Arizona in 1946 where he worked his own ranch in Granite Dells and opened the Rifle Ranch, a store specializing in custom rifles, hand loading equipment and shooting and hunting supplies. An avid big game hunter, he was particularly interested in mountain sheep and collected the Grand Slam (all four varieties of North American sheep) and the Super Slam, a collection of 16 different types of sheep found on four separate continents.
Survivors include his wife, Clarice; son, Bill; stepchildren, Eric Carmichel, Scott Carmichel, Donna Voorhest, Kathy Smith and Jennifer Cota; and five grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Assn. or to the Awana Fund or Mission Fund of the Humboldt Bible Church.

Dr. Mack Hollowell
Services for Dr. Mack W. Hollowell, 81, of Charleston were held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston with the Rev. Dale Bock officiating. Interment followed in the Roselawn Cemetery with the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home in Charleston in charge of arrangements.
He passed away at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 in his winter vacation home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Mack was born Dec. 20, 1919 in Charleston, the son of Mack and Elsie Swickard Hollowell of Newman. He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Alice Burgett. He later married Margaret Campbell Barlow of Sullivan July 26, 1975, and she survives.
He is also survived by his children, Dr. Susan Shirley and husband Dr. Michael Shirley of St. Charles and their son Jason of Champaign, Dr. Jeff Hollowell and his children Jacob and Alyssa of Waukesha, Wis., Melissa Katsimpalis and husband Tom and their son Kory of Ft. Collins, Col., and Megan Summers and her husband Stuart and their children Alana, Evan and Iris of Valparaiso, Ind.; stepchildren, John C. Barlow and his children Ellen and Lincoln of Valparaiso, Ind., Todd L. Barlow and wife Sandra and their children David, Grace and Sam of Bloomington, and Mary Anne Barlow Allen of Scottsdale, Ariz.
He earned his bachelor of medicine degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and his M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He served in the Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. After an honorable discharge, he practiced family medicine in Charleston for 46 years. He was instrumental in raising funds for the Charleston Memorial and Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Hospital building programs. He was the medical director for the Hour House Drug and Rehabilitation Center for 28 years, retiring in December 2000.
He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Illinois Medical Society, serving on several committees. He was a member and president of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians, a member and president of the SBLHC Systems Board and Foundation boards in previous years. He was an active member of the Coles/Cumberland Medical Society. He was a member and first president of the Eastern Illinois University Board of Trustees, and had previously served on the Illinois Board of Governors of State Colleges and Universities.
Memorials may be made to the Mack Hollowell Fund for children at SBLHC Foundation, East Central Illinois Hospice, The Hour House or the EIU Foundation.
