Arthur Thomas Galt Jr.
Arthur Thomas Galt Jr., 90, New Lisbon, Wis., and formerly of Greenwood, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Hess Memorial Hospital, Mauston.

He was born April 9, 1912, in Evanston, to Arthur T. and Ida (Cook) Galt.
He was the founder of Galt Airport, Greenwood. He was a graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts in 1934 and Kent Law School in Chicago.

He was a member of the Black Horse Troop. He was a captain in the Army in World War II in Germany in the First Army Tank Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He remained in Germany serving as legal counsel on the War Crimes Commission in Nuremberg. He was president of the Maywood Park Trotting Association; served on the Red Cross Board of Directors; and also held many offices in the First Presbyterian Church, Woodstock.

He was instrumental in starting the Civil Air Patrol at Galt Airport. He was a member of Harvard Moose Lodge, Woodstock VFW Post 5040 and was inducted into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame in 1999. He was especially proud of his involvement in the Greenwood School mentor program.

Survivors include a brother, William Galt, Chicago; two daughters, Joan (Deane) Hammarstedt, Crystal Lake, and Barbara Davis, Lihue, Hawaii; a special friend, Susan Ackman, New Lisbon; five grandchildren, Cynthia (William) Walkington, Woodstock, and Paul (Lynda) Hammarstedt, Eric A. (Tammy) Hammarstedt, David (Denise) Hammarstedt and Dr. Kirsten (Jeffrey) Kershaw, all of Crystal Lake; 18 great-grandchildren, Sara, Liz, Katie and Emily Walkington, Melissa Ehardt, Jessica Soriano, Joseph Ehardt, Zebadiah, Austin, Michael and Charles Davis, Woodstock, Alex and William Kershaw, Katie and Amy Hammarstedt, David Hammarstedt, Leah and Kyle Hammarstedt, Crystal Lake; two great-great-grandchildren, Jake Billimack and Petra Soriano; a sister-in-law, Jane Galt; a daughter-in-law, Wilna Davis; and a granddaughter-in-law, Bobbi Davis, Woodstock.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera; his parents; a brother, Dr. Raymond Galt; a son, Charles B. Davis; two grandsons, Timothy W. and Charles A. Davis; and a granddaughter, Lindy Ehardt Austin.

Visitation, followed by the funeral service, was held July 26 at First Presbyterian Church, Woodstock. Interment was held at McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Woodstock.

Arrangements were made by the Windridge Funeral Home, Cary.

Roy E. Swanson
Roy E. Swanson, 96, longtime resident of Wonder Lake, died Friday, July 26, 2002.

He was born March 11, 1906, in Winona to John and Ida (Gillman) Swanson. He married Isabelle G. Reinhard of Streator March 24, 1943.

They moved to Chicago where he became a tool and die maker of note. Summer residents of Wonder Lake since 1942, he and his family moved to Wonder Lake permanently in 1951. He became very active in the community and served with the Wonder Lake Volunteer Fire Department. He was a pivotal member of the Wonder Lake Harrison School Board.

He and his wife were the driving force behind the development of what is now Pioneer Center and its programs.

He worked many years to help form the Wonder Lake Bible Church and was one of the last two charter members. Among his many services to the Lord was his faithful driving of the Sunday school bus for more than 20 years.

After his wife died in 1967, he married Grace Diederich in 1972, retired and continued to travel, visiting all 50 states as well as Canada, Mexico and Cuba.

In 1992, he was instrumental in the forming of the Calvary Bible Church of McHenry.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy A. (Cecil) Vogts, Tomahawk, Wis., and Carole L. (Samuel) Mitterling, Wonder Lake; four grandchildren, Edward Vogts, Whitewater, Wis., Dawn (Scott) Peterson, Libertyville, Marisa (Kerry) Batdorff, Wonder Lake, and Michelle (Brian) Madsen, Wonder Lake; and 11 great-grandchildren, Kerisa, Brian, Scott, Gregg, Erick, Ryan, Nikki, Lauren, Marc, Karleea and Kamron.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and his second wife.

Visitation was held July 29, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Funeral services were July 30 at the Wonder Lake Bible Church, followed by interment at the Riverview Cemetery, Streator.

James L. ‘Bix’ Bixby
James L. “Bix” Bixby, 79, Schaumburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, of cancer at his home.

He was born June 13, 1921, in Battle Creek, Mich., to Allen and Marguerite (Smith) Bixby. The Bixby family lived in various locations in Michigan and Iowa before settling in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he graduated from North Side High School in 1939. He married Maxine C. Eppers Oct. 20, 1945, in Elkhart, Ind.

He attended Northwestern University and began his newspaper and photography career with the Chicago Tribune and the Evanston News-Index while attending Northwestern. During much of World War II, he worked for United Press at their Fort Wayne, Ind., Indianapolis, Chicago and Detroit bureaus as editor and bureau manager. Following a stint with the Detroit Times, he worked in public relations management for major corporations in Richmond, Va., New York City and Decatur, Ala.

In 1953, he founded his own public relations firm in Chicago, Newsography-95. In 1962, he transitioned to association management with the American Music Conference and Smith, Bucklin & Associates. He retired as chief compliance officer and department director with the American Egg Board.

He was passionate about community service. From 1962 to 1976, he held offices including president of the Hickory Falls Subdivision and Wonder Lake Master Property Owners Association in Wonder Lake. From 1977 to 1997, he held offices including president of the Bar Harbour Master Homeowners Association and 101 Bar Harbour Association in Schaumburg. He served as founding director and secretary of the Schaumburg Prairie Arts Foundation from 1990 to 1992.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Laura Blocksom, Woodstock; two sons, John (Susan) Bixby, St. Charles, and Fred (Marcia) Bixby, Cary; seven grandchildren, Jody (Randy) Whitaker, Algonquin, Michael (Anna) Bixby, Willow Springs, Angela (Chris) Castaldo, St. Charles, Bethany (Joseph) Szobody, West Chicago, Joanna Bixby, St. Charles, and Leslie and Allen Bixby, Cary; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Jacob Whitaker and Luke Castaldo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Raymond.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 1001 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg. His hope was that all who knew him would celebrate life and realize that he did try to make positive contributions benefiting others in his lifetime. Memorials can be directed to St. Matthew’s Debt Retirement Fund.

William C. Lightbody
William C. Lightbody, 59, Woodstock, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock.

He was born Oct. 21, 1942, in Montclair, N.J., to James and Stella (Lorene) Lightbody Sr.

He was a graduate of Wayne State University in Michigan. He was the village president of Hebron for many years. He owned and operated Northern Illinois Appraisals Company and was also employed by Prudential First Realty in Woodstock. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a member of the Trenton school board, Michigan, from 1972 to 1974.

Survivors include a daughter, Kristen (Eric) Hardesty, Woodstock; his mother, Flat Rock, Mich.; a brother, Jim Lightbody Jr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; two sisters, Joyce Lightbody, Flat Rock, and Diane Brown, Taylor, Mich.; four nieces and nephews, Jimmie Lightbody, Adam Lightbody, Alexandra Lightbody and James Lightbody; his special friend, Donna Stephens, Woodstock; and a brother-in-law, Larry Brown, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a nephew, Steve Clinton.

Visitation was Aug. 30 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Funeral service was Aug. 31 at the funeral home. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery, Woodstock.

Ethel A. Wilkerson
Ethel A. Wilkerson, 90, Woodstock, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at her home.

She was born Aug. 15, 1912, in Harvard, to George W. and Emma (Burow) Schultz. She married Donald F. Wilkerson Feb. 15, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa. He died in 1989.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She had been employed as an inspector with Woodstock Die Casting Company for 18 years.

Survivors include a sister, Nell Fritz, Harvard; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation, followed by the funeral, was Aug. 29, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Interment was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Harvard.

Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock.

Albert J. Babcock
Albert J. Babcock, 79, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002.

He was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Lake Orion, Mich., to Rolland and Adlade (Hall) Babcock. He married Rita O’Holleran April 27, 1946, in Richmond.

He was a 40-year resident of Woodstock. Avid golfers, he and his wife retired to Largo, Fla., in 1990. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, and a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Largo.

He joined the Navy in April 1941 and was assigned to the Hunter-Liggett at the time of the invasion of Guadalcanal Aug. 7, 1942. He was part of a three-man crew that ran landing craft from ship to shore.

He was a member of the VFW, the Elks Lodge and the Knights of Columbus. He served as a volunteer fireman and as a Little League coach for many years.

Survivors include four sisters-in-law, Sylvia O’Holleran, Marion Slavin, Alene Redlin and Phyllis Newer; a brother-in-law, Donald Ryckman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, George and Robert Babcock; and a sister, Phyllis Ryckman.
Visitation will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60010.

Arrangements were made by Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock.

Phyllis J. Afeld
Phyllis J. Afeld, 74, McHenry, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry.

She was born April 12, 1928, in Chicago, to Arthur “Jack” and Nellie (Traut) Smith. Her mother died during childbirth, and she was raised by Margaret (Huemann) Smith. She married Robert Afeld April 7, 1951, in McHenry.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Council of Catholic Women.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren, cross-stitching, home decorating, gardening and golfing.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Pam (Art) Bellon, Harvard; two sons, Gary (Kolleen) Afeld, McHenry, and Mark (Kelly) Afeld, Woodstock; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Ginger, Sarah, Kendra, Lindy, Greta, Mollie, Bridget and Emma; and a great-grandchild, Kyle.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation was Sept. 15 at Colonial Funeral Home, McHenry. The funeral Mass was held Sept. 16 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, McHenry. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Danielle M. Trueblood
Danielle M. Trueblood, 18, Algonquin, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002.

She was born Sept. 17, 1984, in Park Ridge, to Danny and Monica (Mamrot) Trueblood.

She was a student at Marian Central Catholic High School, Woodstock.

She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Algonquin.

Survivors include her parents; her maternal grandparents, Sigmund and Bernice Mamrot, Des Plaines; her paternal grandparents, Vern and Ruth Trueblood, Rutledge, Tenn.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation was Sept. 23 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Algonquin. The funeral was Sept. 24 at the church, with the Rev. Michael J. Tierney officiating. Burial was in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church or to Marian Central Catholic High School.

Funeral arrangements were made by Wait-Ross-Allanson Funeral Home, Algonquin.

Kevin D. Trueblood
Kevin D. Trueblood, 15, Algonquin, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002.

He was born June 10, 1987, in Park Ridge, to Danny and Monica (Mamrot) Trueblood.

He was a student at Marian Central Catholic High School, Woodstock.

He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Algonquin.

George F. Roth
George F. Roth, 81, Wonder Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke Medical Center, Chicago.

He was born Aug. 9, 1921, in Chicago, to George J. and Ella (Wendt) Roth. He married Joyce Martin Oct. 2, 1948, in Chicago.

He worked at Rush Presbyterian Hospital as a stationary engineer for 34 years. He retired in 1987. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving between 1942 and 1946. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Woodstock.

Survivors include his wife, Wonder Lake; a son, Randall (Karen) Roth, Wonder Lake; three grandchildren, Lt. j.g. Randall Roth II, Brandon Roth and Courtney Roth; and a sister, LaVergne Gratton, Rolling Meadows.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Larson officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Arlington Heights.

George T. Zabilka Jr.
George T. Zabilka Jr., 54, Woodstock, formerly of Elgin, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born May 13, 1948, in Chicago, to George T. and Mildred (Bouma) Zabilka Sr.

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970 on the USS Enterprise and the USS America in Vietnam. He worked for Northwest Airlines for 30 years at O’Hare and Midway airports.

He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church of Elgin and a member of IAM Local 1487.
He was a loving husband and father and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Linda, Woodstock; five children, Peter Zabilka, Elgin, Philip (Jennifer) Zabilka, Carol Stream, Paul Zabilka, Geneva, and Ryan and David Zabilka, Woodstock; a brother, Francis (Lyn) Zabilka, Orland Hills; a sister, Katherine Zabilka, California; and his two faithful companions, Dusty and Emily.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William F. Munro and Albert Zabilka; and his sister, Georgette Hila.

Visitation was Nov. 25 in Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. The funeral service was Nov. 26 at Epworth United Methodist Church, Elgin.

Burial will be private in Oakland Cemetery, Woodstock.

Memorials may be made to the children’s education fund or the family to be used for lung cancer research.

Harold G. Huffman
Harold G. Huffman, 75, Wonder Lake, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry.
Visitation was 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Justen’s Wonder Lake Funeral Home, Wonder Lake. The funeral blessing will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the funeral home, with the Rev. D. Tranel officiating. Interment will be in Christ the King Cemetery, Wonder Lake.

Patricia A. Dixon-Schey
Patricia A. Dixon-Schey, 45, McHenry, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at Fair Oaks health care center, Crystal Lake.
The visitation was Jan. 13 at George R. Justen and Son Funeral Home, McHenry. The funeral blessing was Jan. 14 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Sherry officiating. Interment was in Woodland Cemetery, McHenry.
Memorials to Adoration Chapel of the Church of Holy Apostles would be appreciated by the family.

Santos M. Hernandez
Santos M. Hernandez, 94, Woodstock, formerly of Union, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at Woodstock Residence.
Visitation was Jan. 14 at Marengo-Union Funeral Home. The funeral Mass was Jan. 15 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Marengo, with the Monsignor Philip O’Neil as celebrant. Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Masses in his name would be appreciated.

Arthur Wisz
Arthur Wisz, 82, Woodstock, and formerly of Marengo, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock. He was born Dec. 18, 1916, in Chicago, to Lawrence and Angela (Michno) Wisz. He married Estelle J. Radzienta June 9, 1941, in Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He began his career with Hart, Schaffner & Marx, Sewell Manufacturing as a clothing designer, and ended his career with his own company, Fashions by Wisz, Mississippi. He was a member of the International Association of Clothing Designers.
Visitation was Jan. 16 at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, Marengo. The funeral was Jan. 17 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Geoffrey Wirth officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Marengo.
Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hi Nursing Home, 2406 Hartland Road, Woodstock, IL 60098.

Laverne J. Gregory
Laverne J. Gregory, 79, Woodstock, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Capron, to Samuel and Grace (Wincapaw) Gregory. He married Gladys Anderson July 18, 1941, in Harvard. He was a dairy farmer for 50 years in the McHenry County area. He was a past member of Ridgefield Grange and Woodstock Progressives. He was a board member of the McHenry County Drainage District. He was a member of United Church of Christ, Beloit.
Visitation was 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Schneider, Leucht, Merwin and Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the funeral home, with Steve Nutzman officiating. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Harvard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of one’s choice.
