9/20/2006 John B. Emery
John B. Emery, 91, formerly of rural Woodstock, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at Sunrise of Crystal Lake Assisted Living Home. He was born July 27, 1915, to Ray and Ada (Barden) Emery in Toluca, Mont. He married Aimee Kiltz May 8, 1937, in Woodstock. He was a dairy farmer in rural Woodstock for many years. He worked for the Progressive Milk Association as a milk check tester and a field man. He also worked as a musician, mechanic and carpenter. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling with his wife. They were members of the Harvard Milk Center Squares, a square-dancing club. He enjoyed playing bridge, woodworking, bicycling, gardening and being with family and friends. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Janet Adams, McHenry, and Donna (Earl) Hass, Woodstock; a son, Robert (Sharon) Emery, Columbia, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Lawrence (Keli) Heckathorne, Phoenix, Eugene (Dorothy) Heckathorne, McHenry, Marilyn Kay (John) Hill, Belvidere, Lee (Zenaida) Avery, Belvidere, Corinne (Travis) Mann, Cedarville, John (Mary) Emery, Columbia, Laura (Jim) Brueggemann, O'Fallon, Mo., and Karie (Carl) Jackson, Columbia; eight great-grandchildren, Rachel Hansen, Lewis and Renee Possehl, Jaron and Emery Hill, Austin Mann, and Jacob and Luke Brueggemann. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, LaRae; a brother, Lee; and an infant daughter, Marilyn Kay. A private graveside service will be held. Geneva E. Lisenby, 87, Woodstock, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at her home. She was born Nov. 30, 1918, in Jefferson County, to George and Ethel (Jones) Nichols. She married George E. Lisenby Dec. 2, 1936, in Jefferson County. She and her husband moved to Woodstock in the 1940s. She worked as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell in the Woodstock office from 1948 to 1979. She also worked at Woodstock Memorial Hospital as a dietary aide from 1980 to 1985. She volunteered at both the Woodstock Food Pantry and Memorial Hospital. She was of strong Christian faith and testified to all she met about eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Debbie (Dale) Rover, Troy, Mo., and Lori (Ronald) Leonard, Lake Geneva, Wis.; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Patrick) Hunt, Bellflower, Mo., Nathan Rover, Troy, Jason (Aimee) Leonard, Lake Geneva, Amanda Leonard, Lake Geneva, and Emily A. Leonard, Lake Geneva; three great-grandchildren, Josiah, Benjamin and Samuel Hunt, all of Bellflower; a sister, Mary Ann (C. Eugene) Deem, Melbourne, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Aug. 20, 1999; and two brothers, Roy Nichols and Aubrey Nichols. George L. Lindsay, 86, Phoenix, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at his home with his family present. He was born Feb. 23, 1920, in St. Cloud, Minn. He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was employed by Borden Dairy Co. in Chicago for 30 years and Deans Foods in Huntley for 15 years. Survivors include his wife, Fern; two daughters, Frances (James) Bennett and Jacqueline; two sons, Bruce and George; and four grandchildren, Michael, Autumn, Bruce and James. He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances, and father, Ernes; and two brothers, Vernon (Jack) and Ernest. A graveside service was held Sept. 7 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were made by Shadow Mountain Mortuary.

Norma L. Skerke
Norma L. Skerke, 87, Woodstock, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at her home. She was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Des Plaines, to Hans and Hulda (Jaacks) Poehls. She married Harvey Skerke Sept. 30, 1940, in Des Plaines. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake. She was the founder and operator of The Red Barn farm market in Woodstock. She will be remembered as a devoted homemaker, gardener, cook and baker. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Klehm, Woodstock; a son, John (Catherine) Skerke, Crystal Lake; five grandchildren, Robert (Elizabeth) Skerke, John Klehm, Elizabeth Klehm, Kathleen Skerke and Carrie Klehm; and a brother, Wallace Poehls. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Margaret; a brother, Kenneth; a grandson, James Skerke; and a son-in-law, Chuck Klehm. Visitation was Sept. 15 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was held Sept. 16 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake. Steven Michael Garza, 32, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, in Woodstock. He was born Aug. 6, 1974, to Arturo and Sarah (Fields) Garza. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Woodstock. He was a 1992 graduate of Woodstock High School. He worked with his father in the carpentry trade as an apprentice. He had a love for animals and a comic book collection. He was a Chicago White Sox fan. Survivors include his parents; a brother, Shaun Phillip Garza; two grandmothers, Helen Fields and Josephine Garza; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Elmer Fields and Rudy Garza. The visitation and funeral were held Sept. 8 at the First United Methodist Church. Kenneth E. Heldman, 71, Woodstock, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, in Woodstock. He was born June 17, 1935, in Erie, Pa., to George and Helen (Bannick) Heldman. He married Sharon Brock May 23, 1964, in Chicago. He was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, and he had served as a minister to nursing homes in and around the Woodstock area for 28 years. He was involved in nursing home singing ministries with his wife. He had played his trumpet with the Christian Fellowship Band in the 1970s. He was a hard-working carpenter by trade and was self-employed, as well as an employee of other carpentry firms in the area. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; his children, Nate Heldman, Chicago, Matt (Jenny) Heldman, Crystal Lake, Ginger (Gaius) Cosman, Hampshire, Georgia (Brac) Bateman, Crystal Lake, and Angela Heldman, Chicago; his grandchildren, Lucas Heldman, Ethan Heldman, Autumn Cosman, Jesse Cosman and Seth Cosman; and his sister, Delores (Tony) Kozie, Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents. The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Willow Creek Community Church Chapel, Barrington. Althea A. Schmidt, 86, Woodstock, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, in the Hospice Care Unit of Lincoln Park Hospital, Chicago. She was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Woodstock, to Ernest and Helen (Dittberner) Schmidt. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Woodstock. For many years, she worked for the national insurance brokerage firm of Rollins, Burdick, Hunter Co., Chicago. Her remaining working years were with the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, from which she retired in 1984. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Jaine Schmidt, Elgin; her nieces, Marilyn Schmidt Anderson, Woodstock, Jean Schmidt Stewart, Elgin, and Lori Wilcox Matthew, Clinton, Iowa; her nephews, Robert Schmidt, Aurora, and Alan Schmidt, Elgin; a great-niece, Katelyn Matthew, Clinton; and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald Schmidt; and a sister, Evelyn Schmidt Wilcox. George L. Winter
George L. Winter, 72, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born June 8, 1934, in Chicago, to John and Lydia (Doerschl) Winter. He married Waltraud Heiring Sept. 24, 1960, in Chicago. He was a veteran, serving with the Army Corps of Engineers. He had been a member of the Rhinische Gesang Verein Choir. He was an electrical engineer by trade and enjoyed working around his home. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; and a niece, Karen Evans, Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents. Vistation was Sept. 1 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Mass of the Resurrection was held Sept. 2 at St. Mary Church, Woodstock, with Monsignor James McLoughlin officiating. Interment was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock. Vera Irene Tell, 93, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, in Vancouver, Wash. She was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Greenwood, Wis., on the dairy farm of Adolph and Julia Turnquist. She had lived in Greenwood, Wis.; Chicago; Palatine; Loyal, Wis.; Woodstock; and Vancouver, Wash. She was a member of numerous organizations, including Grace Lutheran Circle, Infant Welfare Society and Plum Grove Estates Book Review Club. She worked at the Pullman Palace Car Co. and Union Oil for many years. She enjoyed spreading her joy of life to the people she met. Survivors include a son, William "Bill" (Cathy) Tell; a daughter, Paula (Joe) Burgher; two grandchildren, Emma (Graham) Cubitt and Karl (Vanessa) Tell; and two sisters, Helen (Eric) Axelson and Verdelle ("Jack") Felix. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Tell; and a sister, Ruth (Jerome) Bertz. The visitation and memorial service were held Sept. 2 at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. Steven R. Weber, 56, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at The Fountains at Crystal Lake. He was born Sept. 11, 1949, in Evanston, to Robert and Ruth (Pape) Weber. He was a carpenter with Werderitch Construction of Crystal Lake for 19 years. He loved music, travel, photography, camping, gardening and cooking. Survivors include his daughters, Caitlin and Emily Weber, both of Woodstock; his mother, Arlington Heights; his sisters, Christine (Andrew) Marias, Cary, N.C., and Phyllis (Michael) Lynch, Glenview; his nieces and nephews, Lisa Pichler, Melissa Marias, Michael and Colleen Lynch and Michael Weber; his ex-wife and dear friend, Pamela; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his father; and his brother, Mark Weber. Visitation was Sept. 1 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, Crystal Lake. Donald E. Barrett, 76, Plano, Texas, and formerly of Woodstock, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Medical Center of Plano. He was born April 1, 1930, in Woodstock, to Joseph and Helen Voss Barrett. He married Marjorie Jean Periman April 6, 1950, in Woodstock. He entered the U.S. Air Force Sept. 7, 1948, in Elgin, and served four years. He was a sergeant for the Woodstock police department. He was a member of Lakeview Church in Quinlan, Texas. Survivors include his wife, Plano; three daughters, Debra Susan Bricch, Ellsworth, Vicki Barrett Blakley, Plano, and Donna Lynn Childs, Sandwich; a son, Edward Barrett, Mountain Home, Ark.; one sister, Joyce Vogt, Geneva; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in his death by his parents. A funeral service was held Sept. 2 at Lakeview Church with Brother Paul Williams officiating.

Joan E. Cartwright, 66, Crystal Lake, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Woodstock Residence. She was born Jan. 3, 1940, in Chicago, to George and Elsie (Dembowski) Halama. She worked for Cuna Mutual for the past five years. Survivors include two children, Christine (Perry) Koste, Crystal Lake, and Russell (Karen) Orlowitz, Williamsburg, Colo.; four grandchildren, Angela Lein, Woodstock, Kevin Orlowitz, Williamsburg, Colo., Samantha Guerrero, Crystal Lake, and Timothy Orlowitz, Broomfield, Colo.; and a sister, Barbara (Frank) Hauser, Mount Prospect. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation was Aug. 27 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home Crystal Lake. The funeral was held Aug. 28 at the funeral home. Interment was private.

Adam Hardt
Adam Hardt, 85, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born April 13, 1921, in Clinton, Wis., to Christian Sr. and Marie (Burnst) Hardt. He married Rosa Wardle Jan. 25, 1947. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Woodstock. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Woodstock. He worked at Woodstock Die Cast for more than 30 years. He also worked at Castolite in Woodstock. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. Survivors include a son, Vincent Hardt, Warrenville; a brother, John "Jack" (Beverly) Hardt, Beloit; and two sisters, Lydia Hull, Rockford, and Helen Dickerson, Sharon, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Aug. 23, 2002; six brothers, Christian Jr., David, Henry, Edward, Alex and Fredrick; and four sisters, Lillian, Dorothy, Amelia and Emma. The visitation and funeral were held Aug. 28 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Rev. Thomas Larson officiating. Brenda Jane Price, 47, Crystal Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at her home. She was born Oct. 20, 1958, in Chicago, to Leo and Arline (Lucken) Olcott. She married Brian Price March 1, 1979, in Woodstock. She enjoyed nature and her yard. She loved to garden. Survivors include her husband, Crystal Lake; two daughters, Lindsey Price, Woodstock, and Tracie Alvarez, Woodstock; a brother, Eugene Olcott, Rockford; two sisters, Colleen Vogelsang, Harvard, and Rita Howell, Crystal Lake; and three grandchildren, Spencer, Carson and Sutton Alvarez. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Tom and Jim. A memorial service was held Aug. 26 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Edna MacLaughlin, 96, Woodstock, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at Hearthstone Manor Nursing Home, Woodstock. She was born Oct. 25, 1909, in Bruning, Neb., to Henry and Theresa (Hallman) Johnson. She married Glen MacLaughlin Feb. 14, 1948, in Woodstock. She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She was a member of the choir for many years. She worked at the First National Bank of Woodstock for more than 30 years, retiring as head cashier. She was a member of the National Geographic Society and the National Audubon Society. She and her husband traveled throughout the world. After his death, she continued her love of travel. She was an avid bowler and golfer. She was able to participate in the sports into her mid-80s. She loved nature and the outdoors. Survivors include a sister, Delma Knuth, Fontana, Wis.; her nephews, Robert (Janet) Knuth, Woodstock, and Roger Knuth, Fontana; her nieces, Nona Ring, Fontana, Ga., (Jim) Wycpalek, Williams Bay, Wis., and Peggy (Mike) Palmquist, Woodstock; many more nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law, Jeanne MacLaughlin, Crystal Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sept. 9, 1980; and an infant sister, Mildred Johnson. The visitation and funeral were held Aug. 26 at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Arthur Bergren officiating. Burial was in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock. Ronald J. Groh, 54, Woodstock, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at his home, after a courageous nine-month battle with cancer. He was born April 15, 1952, in Chicago, to Fred and Doreen (Law) Groh. He married Robin Nowaskey Dec. 27, 1971, at St. Mary Church, Woodstock. They renewed their wedding vows Aug. 1, 2006, in Bar Harbor, Maine. He was director of marketing with LDR Industries, where he had been employed for 24 years. He attended Western Illinois University in Macomb and the University of Illinois in Chicago. He was a dedicated working man, but he always put his family first. When he wasn't traveling for work, he enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; four children, Phillip (April Bruchauser) Groh, McHenry, Heidi (Nick) Groh-DiChiara, Denver, Lynnsey (Brad) Osborne, Poplar Grove, and Leslie (Billy) Miller, McHenry; four grandchildren, Jordyn Miller, Peyton Miller, Camryn Miller and Kailey Osborne; his father, Fred Groh, Lake Zurich; a brother, Ken (Rhonda) Groh, Lake Zurich; a sister, Janet (Bob) Putbress, Lake Zurich; many nieces and nephews; and many good friends and great co-workers. He was preceded in death by his mother. A memorial service was held Aug. 24 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. 8/16/2006 Eleanor 'Midge' Dechambre
Eleanor "Midge" Dechambre, 79, Woodstock, formerly of Peoria, Ariz., and Sturgeon Bay, Wis., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at Hearthstone Manor Nursing Home in Woodstock. She was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Highland Park to Edward A. and Margaret M. (O'Neill) Nevins. She married Gerald P. Dechambre Oct. 19, 1946. She was an owner of Dechambre's True Value Hardware Store in Sturgeon Bay. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Annette (Kevin) Butler, Woodstock; a son, David (Cecile) Dechambre, Flagstaff, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer), Jonathan (fiancee Shannon), Brett, Claire, Jordan, Kate and Sarah; and a great-grandson, Aidan. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, E. James; and a son, Gregory. The visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 17, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. Her nephew, the Rev. Donald Nevins, will preside with Monsignor James McLoughlin concelebrating. Burial will be at 3 p.m., Aug. 17, in St. Mary Cemetery, Lake Forest. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the James Green Tuition Fund at St. Mary School, to the MS Society or to Family Alliance Inc., 2028 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock, IL 60098.

Erving Arundale
Erving Arundale, 91, Woodstock, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born June 5, 1915, in South Manchester, Conn., to Henry and Fannie (Erving) Arundale. He married Phoebe Allison Aug. 6, 1938, in Elizabeth, N.J. He was a current member of the resident council at Hearthstone Village in Woodstock. Survivors include three children, Joanne (William) Patterson, Crystal Lake, Charles Erving (Diana) Arundale, Mountain Home, Ark., and Susan (Robert) Zolli, Providence, R.I.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2000 and a brother, Henry Burton Arundale. A private memorial service was held for the family at First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake. The public memorial service was Aug. 15 at Hearthstone Village, Woodstock, with the Rev. Randy Waller officiating. Inurnment was in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, N.J. Memorials can be made in his name to the First Congregational Church of Yarmouth, 329 Main St., Yarmouthport, MA 02675, or to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, 335 Watterson St., P.O. Robert H. Obermayer, 77, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. He was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Chicago, to George and Minnie (Lorenz) Obermayer. He married Virginia Pasternak Feb. 20, 1966, in Evanston. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He also participated as a drummer in the base Navy band. He owned and operated Obie's RV Sales in McHenry. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; two sons, G. Dana (Carrie) Obermayer, McHenry, and Robin (Roxanne) Obermayer, Batavia; and three grandchildren, Dirk, Kiersten and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, George Obermayer. Visitation was Aug. 11 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The graveside service was held Aug. 12 at McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock, with the Rev. Roger Olson officiating. Military honors were provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5040, Woodstock. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.

8/16/2006 Josephine Riggs
Josephine Riggs, 81, Woodstock and formerly of Kensington, Conn., died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at her home. She was born July 4, 1925, in Chicago, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Kabberich) Alther. She married Frederick Riggs Sept. 15, 1951, in Evanston. She was an artist. She enjoyed painting and sculpting. She enjoyed many types of crafting projects. While living in Connecticut, she was a volunteer for many years at the hospital gift shop in New Britain. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Judy (Brian) Reilly, Woodstock; and three grandchildren, David Reilly, Kathryn Reilly and Maureen Reilly. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marion Alther. Visitation was Aug. 10 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was held Aug. 11 at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Randy Willers officiating. Burial was in Montrose Cemetery, Chicago. 8/16/2006 Walter M. Reed
Walter M. Reed, 88, Woodstock, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, at Hearthstone Manor Nursing Home, Woodstock. He was born June 26, 1918, in Ridgefield, to Walter and Mabel (Wille) Reed. He married Margaret Langhoff Aug. 30, 1941, in Woodstock. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was part of the First Allied Airborne in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Presidential Citation and three Bronze Stars. He worked at Accura Tool & Die in Crystal Lake for 15 years. He formerly worked at Werner in Cary. After retiring, he delivered parts for NAPA in McHenry and worked at Jewel in Algonquin. He was a former head usher at Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. He and his wife were members of St. John's Lutheran Church, Woodstock. For 20 years, he was an umpire for Woodstock Little League and Woodstock Girls Softball. He was an avid Cubs fan. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Paul (Susan) Reed, Hebron, and Steve (Angela) Reed, Woodstock; two daughters, Patricia Menzimer, Woodstock, and Cynthia Roth, Harvard; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anita Dufield. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Walter Michael Reed; and his brother-in-law, Curt Dufield. The funeral was held Aug. 12 at McHenry County Memorial Park Mausoleum, Woodstock, with the Rev. Thomas Larson officiating. Burial was in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock. 8/16/2006 Harold J. Payne
Harold J. Payne, 77, East Troy, Wis., died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006. He was born March 27, 1929, in Illinois to Charles and Lydia (Steinke) Payne. He married Mary Smith Nov. 18, 1950, in Elgin. He and his wife were residents of Huntley until moving to East Troy in 1958. He was a farmer his entire life. He was a member and one of the founders of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He held various offices within the church and was head elder as well as an elder for many years. Survivors include his wife; three children, Vicki (Joseph) Terhardt, Larry (Grace) Payne and Debbie (Bob) Jensen, all of the East Troy area; seven grandchildren, Jason (Sara) Terhardt, Philip (Melissa) Terhardt, Jenni (Kurt) Kegley, Kandiss (Andy) Beck, Deidra Payne, Valerie Jensen and Scott Jensen; seven great-grandchildren, Daniel, Christian, Jaydon, Olivia, Kayla, Wyatt and Madison; three brothers, Roger (Joyce), Ronald (Mary) and David (Marie); two sisters, Charlotte and Arlene; a sister-in-law, Ruth (Ken) Landwer; and nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Cecil; and two children, Gerald and Susan. The funeral service was held Aug. 13 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, East Troy, with the Rev. Maurice Lind officiating. Interment was private for the family. John P. Jung
John P. Jung, 81, Woodstock, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. He was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Chicago, to John and Catherine (Gurisch) Jung. He married Nancy Hooper Oct. 17, 1974, in Woodstock. He was a veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1946 with the Paratrooper Division of the Infantry, where he was awarded three Bronze Battle Stars, as well as a Purple Heart. He was the founder of Shur-Pak, a produce brokerage for onions and potatoes, originally in Des Plaines, then moving to Elk Grove. He owned and operated the John Jung Real Estate Century 21 offices in Woodstock and Crystal Lake for 35 years. He was active with the McHenry County Board of Realtors, serving as president in 1980 and being named Realtor of the Year in 1984. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Peter (Margaret) Jung, Woodstock, and county board member John (Josie) Jung, Woodstock; two daughters, Kristine (Wayne) Brown, Woodstock, and Karen Behrns, Crystal Lake; seven grandchildren, Annie, Lisa, Peter and Danny Jung, and David, Katie and John Behrns; and the mother of his children, Sally Jung, Niles. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph; a sister, Annie O'Toole; and a son-in-law, Ken Behrns. Visitation was Aug. 7 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was held Aug. 8 at the funeral home. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Woodstock. Ronald W. Ritzert, 66, Pocahontas, Ark., died Saturday, July 8, 2006, in Pocahontas. He was born April 10, 1940, in Hartland, to Henry and Margret (Meinke) Ritzert. He married Joyce Young April 28, 1962, in Woodstock. He later married Robin Ann Campbell. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1958. He was employed at Woodstock Die Cast for 26 years. He was an active member of the Woodstock Jaycees. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1961 in Turkey. Survivors include his sons, Scott (Christine), Woodstock, Richard, Joliet, AJ Campbell, Walnut Ridge, Ark., and Waylon, Salem, Ark.; his daughters, Lynn, Kress, Texas, Shayla Campbell, Jonesboro, Ark., and Dakota, Salem, Ark.; his grandchildren, Jeremy and Allison Ritzert, Huntley; a sister, Margret (Glenn) Nelson, Harvard; and a brother, John Ritzert, Solon Mills. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, in 1992; two brothers, William and Howard; and three sisters, Dorothy, Loretta and Bernice. LaVerne A. Harvey, 59, Galesburg, died Sunday, July 30, 2006, in Galesburg Cottage Hospital. He was born June 11, 1947, in Woodstock, to True and Irene Alberta (Wallis) Harvey. He worked for KCCDD. He also worked at a feed mill and on a cattle farm. He enjoyed gardening, farming, coloring, painting and chocolates. He was baptized in the Catholic faith. He had lived in Galesburg for 18 years. Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Connie (Dale) Bye, Woodstock, who cared for him. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and five sisters. No services were scheduled. Burial will be a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Woodstock. Arrangements were made by Hinchliff-Pearson-West Inc., Galesburg Chapel. Lois M. Whalley, 78, Woodstock, formerly a longtime resident of Port Chester, N.Y., died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She was born March 18, 1928, in Port Chester, N.Y., to Harold and Madeline (Butler) Behringer. She married Franklin "Bud" O. Whalley May 20, 1950, at St. Peter Episcopal Church in Port Chester. She moved to Woodstock in 1994 with her husband. Before raising a family, she was a professional dancer with the Arthur Murray Studio. She later was an assistant pro shop manager for several golf clubs in the Westchester County, New York area. In Woodstock, she was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church, and she was a dedicated member of the Shape Up Express Club. But she most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her children, Janis (Bill) McLaughlin, Kirk (Katie) Whalley and Jean (Bill) Cramer; her grandchildren, Matthew McLaughlin, Kelly (Arnie) Alvarez, Sarah Whalley and Scott Whalley; a great-grandchild, Hannah Alvarez; a brother, Edwin (Eileen) Behringer; and her special friends, Jacy and Allie. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1996. Visitation was Aug. 4 at Craft Memorial Home, Port Chester. Interment was Aug. 5 in Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, N.Y. Eleanore D. Zang, 81, Harvard, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Mercy Hospital, Janesville, Wis. She was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Midlothian, to Walter and Karen (Gustufson) Olson. She married William Zang Dec. 11, 1970, in Melrose Park. She was a loving wife, mother and sister and had many dear friends who will miss her. Survivors include her husband, Harvard; a son, Richard (Diane) Gabriel, Geneva; two sisters, Alice (Marian) Bujak and Corinne Olson; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Gabriel Jr.; and two brothers, George and Walter Olson. The funeral was held Aug. 8 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Dolores M. Saar, 80, Woodstock, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at her home. She was born April 17, 1926, in Barrington, to Joseph and Violet (Bierman) Tichy. She married Eugene M. Saar Jan. 11, 1947, in Arlington Heights. Survivors include three children, Michael (Dayle) Saar, Yorkville, Craig (Martha) Saar, Granville, Ohio, and Druinda (Gary) Santos, McHenry; a daughter-in-law, Diane Saar, Phoenix; 10 grandchildren, Andrew, Kevin, Nathan and Rebecca Saar, Laura (Lane) Burgess, Jennifer (John) Janca, Michelle (Jacob) Saar-Walters, Kathleen Saar, Marc (Sheila) Santos and Cassandra (J.B.) Alford; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Joel E. Saar; a brother, Joseph Tichy; and a great-grandson, Tyler Koenen. William Paul McKay, 51, Woodstock, died Friday, July 28, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born Sept. 26, 1955, in Missouri, to Henry and Frances (King) McKay. He married Diane Wedley. He was a foreman with Solarcrete. He loved the Scouts and was a Scoutmaster for seven years. He also was involved as a coach with Woodstock Little League. He was a hard worker and a good father, and he enjoyed fishing, camping and shopping with his daughter. Survivors include his wife, Lansing, Mich.; a son, Will McKay, Woodstock; a daughter, Kori McKay, Woodstock; his mother, Louise McKay, Tennessee; four brothers, Henry King, Mike (Diana) McKay, Dennis (Ruth) McKay and Mark (Wilma) McKay; and two sisters, Sue (Terry) Filmore and Tammy McKay. LaVerna Rose Moorhouse, 80, Pekin, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at Pekin Manor. She was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Pekin to Nelson George and Carrie Lee (Crafton) Eschmeyer. She married John B. Moorhouse Jr. June 12, 1949, in Pekin. She had worked as a secretary for the Tazewell County Circuit Clerk and at Caterpillar and Farm Service. While living in Richmond, she worked for the McHenry School District. She was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church, in Pekin, where she was a member of the Tri-M Adult Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women and the Priscilla Circle. In earlier years, she and her husband served as youth leaders at the church. She also had played in the bell choir at the church and was formerly active with Chapter LM of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Family was important to her, and she enjoyed playing bridge, pinochle and cooking. She also enjoyed playing golf at both Sunset Hills and Parkview golf courses and bowling. Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Paul) Dahlgren, Greeley, Colo., and Judy (Dennis) Dietrich, Pekin; a son, John (Pamela) Moorhouse, Woodstock; eight grandchildren, Cori (Kip) Snyder and Derek Jones, both of North Pekin, Erin (Steve) Kaye, Algonquin, Jeri Dietrich, Megan Jones and Brandon (Linzee) Dietrich, all of Pekin, Benjamin Moorhouse, Normal, and Patrick Moorhouse, Champaign; and five great-grandchildren, Noah, Paige, Keagan, Kaiden and Current. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aug. 3, 1996, and her parents. Visitation was Aug. 6 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The funeral was held Aug. 7 at Grace United Methodist Church, Pekin, with the Rev. Gary Ford officiating. Burial was in Glendale Memorial Gardens, Pekin. William Paul McKay, 51, Woodstock, died Friday, July 28, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born Sept. 26, 1955, in Missouri, to Henry and Frances (King) McKay. David Alexander McConnell, D.V.M.
David Alexander McConnell, D.V.M., Dundee, died Monday, July 24, 2006, at his home. He was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Woodstock. He married Bonnie, a classmate from kindergarten in the Woodstock public schools, in June 1952. He grew up on a dairy farm during the Depression. As a youngster, he earned the nickname David Applesauce, for his love of that homemade dish. He attended Dean Street Elementary School in Woodstock and often invited "town kids" to the farm to ride the ponies, while he rode their bikes. He trained one pony, "Cherry," to rear up and drop her rider at the command "Hup, Cherry." He graduated as valedictorian from Woodstock High School in the class of 1948. He was an avid athlete who played football (No. 88) and basketball and ran track. He attended the University of Illinois and earned a bachelor of science degree in agriculture and then a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1956. While in veterinary school, he supported his family with a milk route. He bought a small, large-animal practice in Dundee in 1957 and gradually transformed it into a large, small-animal practice, today known as "companion animal" practice. He built his first clinic in 1957. The practice today has three locations, Dundee, Elgin and Algonquin. He specialized in surgery and specifically in orthopedic work. He was a member of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association for more than 25 years and was president in 1974. He also was president of the Kane County Veterinary Medical Association. He attended conferences worldwide in veterinary continuing education. He retired from Dundee Animal Hospital in 1986 and went on to a second career with the American Veterinary Medical Association Insurance Trust from 1987 to 1995. He was a 40-year member of the International Wine and Food Society and had an extremely perceptive palate. He served as "Sir Bacchus" (chairman) of the Northern Illinois Chapter of the IWFS and attended many worldwide conventions. He served as a village trustee for the village of East Dundee from 1987 to 1993. He was chairman of the Camp Edwards Board of the YMCA of the Greater Elgin area. He was an avid fan of the Bears and the University of Illinois. He was proud that his three children all graduated from the University of Illinois and that a grandson is attending there. Survivors include three children, Ellen Blakeman, Martha McConnell (formerly Bush) and Douglas (Susan); his grandchildren, Bennett and Brenten Blakeman, Rachel and Christopher Bush and David Alexander II "Mack," Billy, Gordy and Ashley McConnell; two sisters, Jane Novak and Sally McConnell; a brother, Bo (Gini); and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were private. Gifts can be made to the David McConnell Fund for ALS embryonic stem-cell research.
