Christine C. Bankel, 52, rural Harvard, died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at her home. She was born Sept. 15, 1953, in Montebello, Calif., to Earl and Anna (Adante) Clark. She married John Bankel in 1996 in California. She lived her life as a Christian and was involved in Christian theater. Studying God's word was a passion. She enjoyed the outdoors, traveling and being on the farm in rural Harvard. She was a homemaker and will be remembered for being a loving mother and wife. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sumerlyn; two brothers, Bill and Lonnie Jr.; four sisters, Kathy, Lisa, Linda and Sue; and her second father, Lonnie Craig. She was preceded in death by her mother. The memorial service was held May 20 at First Congregational Church, Huntley, with the Rev. Walter Thyng officiating. Burial was private. Memorials can be made to the family. Arrangements were made by Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock.

Gladys Tonkinson, 79, Rockford and formerly of Woodstock, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at the home of her sister, Evelyn Polecastro, in Rockford. She was a resident of Woodstock for 20 years and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Woodstock. The memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 28, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1715 Ninth St., Rockford.

5/16/2006 Jerald Eburne Clem
Jerald Eburne Clem, 79, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at his home in Hillsboro, Tenn. He was born March 25, 1927, in Kirksville, Mo., to Ray and Maude (Fuller) Clem. He was a retired supervisor for Woodstock Die Casting and was a member of Rutledge Hill Community Church. Survivors include three sons, Charles Ray Clem, Belvidere, Robert Jerald Clem, Lebanon, Tenn., and Frankie Joe Clem, Hillsboro; a daughter, Debra Clem Schneider, Woodstock; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Delmer Clem, Albuquerque; and a sister, Jane Shouse, Monroe City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roasalee Elkins Clem; four brothers, Donald, Harold, Clifford and Dorman Clem; a sister, Loraine Jarrell; a granddaughter, Catie Clem; and a great-grandson, Noah Quarles. Visitation was May 10 at Coffee County Funeral Chapel, Manchester, Tenn. The funeral was held May 11 at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Jim Hodges officiating. Burial was in the Hillsboro Memorial Cemetery. Donations can by made to Gideon's International.

Richard L. Suthard, 56, Woodstock, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Arlington Heights. He was born June 19, 1949, in Waukegan, to Richard and Marian (Wilkes) Suthard. He married Roberta "Bobbi" Barker Oct. 11, 1980, in Lake Bluff. He graduated from Zion-Benton High School in 1967. He was a 1981 graduate of DeVry Technical Institute. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with the military police stationed in Germany. He was an engineer working for Motorola in Arlington Heights for 15 years. He enjoyed art, drawing and music. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His most enjoyable time in his life was time spent with his family. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Timothy (Leigh) Suthard, Fowlerville, Mich., Sgt. Ryan Suthard, currently stationed in Afghanistan, and Jordan Suthard, Woodstock; a daughter, Jennifer (Sgt. Steven) Szura, Woodstock; four grandchildren, Wyatt and Megan Suthard, Fowlerville, and Connor and Parker Szura, Woodstock; a brother, David (Jan) Suthard, Zion; his mother-in-law, Deloris Barker, Charlotte, N.C.; an aunt, Lillian Eldred, Woodstock; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was May 15 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was held May 16 at the funeral home, with the Rev. David Finn officiating. Burial was in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock. Memorials can be made to the Red Cross or the United Service Organizations (USO).

William L. Patton
William L. Patton, 79, of Woodstock and a former longtime resident of Crystal Lake, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Mayo Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., from complications from prostate cancer. He was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Leland Patton and Juanita Patton. He attended Purdue University and received a degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He married Dorothy Gregory. He was a veteran and later went on to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was involved in youth baseball, both Little League and Babe Ruth. He was an avid traveler, golf and fishing enthusiast, who always was looking forward to his next journey. Whether he was eating and drinking fine foods and wines or playing 18 holes of golf, he was in his element no matter what. Survivors include his wife of 55 years an uncle, George Wever, Indianapolis; five children, Bill (Jan) Patton, Crystal Lake, Gary (Debra) Patton, Racine, Wis., Deborah (Neal) Patton Cohan, Orlando, Thomas (Cheryl) Patton, Simsbury, Conn., and Steven (Mary) Patton, Kansas City, Kan.; and nine grandchildren, Will Patton, Rebecca Patton, Jennifer Patton, Eric Patton, Darin Patton, Laura Patton, Katherine Patton, Nick Patton and Matt Patton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Patsy Patton Boone. A private ceremony was conducted and attended by his family.

Audrey S. Ballard, 92, Woodstock, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at her home. She was born May 5, 1914, in Woodstock, to Ernest and Edith Mae (Miller) Swanson. She married Edgar Ballard Sr. Dec. 28, 1950, in Chicago. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock. She graduated from Garfield Park Community Hospital Nursing College in 1936. She had worked in many aspects of nursing over her career of 48 years. She worked as an industrial nurse in Chicago, as a staff nurse at several Chicago hospitals, as a private duty nurse and as a registered nurse at Woodstock Hospital, retiring in 1984. Survivors include three step-grandchildren, Barbara (David) Kreutzer, Carey (William) Torre and Jeffrey (Malisa) Ballard; two brothers, Alan Swanson and Raymond Swanson, both of Woodstock; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1960; a stepson, Edgar Ballard Jr.; and a sister, Elaine Harmon. The visitation and the service were held May 16 at McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum, with the Rev. Randy Willers of Grace Lutheran Church, Woodstock, officiating. Memorials can be made to a scholarship fund for nurses at Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock. Arrangements were made by Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock.

Gerald A. Phillip, 81, Woodstock, died Monday, May 8, 2006, at his home. He was born in Rockford to Peter and Margaret (O'Malley) Phillip. He married Veramae Scott Oct. 25, 1952, at St. Gabriel's Church in Washington, D.C. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. He was a veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a PBY navigator. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in the class of 1950. He retired in 1982 from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission based in Glen Ellyn after working for 30 years. He was a frequent and active volunteer for many local and national charities. He enjoyed golf, woodworking and fishing, but what he enjoyed the most were activities with his family and his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Woodstock; six children, Helen LeDonne, Ormond Beach, Fla., Mary Phillip, Bolingbrook, James (Michele) Phillip, Sugar Grove, Stephen (Colleen) Phillip, Warrenville, Ann (Kevin) Sprague, Marengo, and Janet (Marty) Daugherty, Peachtree City, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, Gino and Joe LeDonne, Stephanie, Dan, Emily and John Phillip, Sarah, Katie and Allie Sprague, and Michael, Bryan and Theresa Daugherty; a sister, Helen (Maury) Regan; and a brother, Bob (Betty) Phillip. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Phillip Scott LeDonne. Visitation was May 10 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated May 11 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Nicholas Federspiel officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Romeoville. Christine A. Hanley, 59, Woodstock, died Saturday, May 6, 2006, at her home. She was born in Oregon to Frank and Edna (Wnent) Kozuch. She worked in housekeeping for many years at Centegra Memorial Medical Center, Woodstock. She enjoyed painting and TV. She also enjoyed being with her neighbors. Survivors include her father, Bourbonnais; a son, Thomas Thies, Schaumburg; a brother, Richard Kozuch, Monteno; a sister, Troy Jurs, Bourbonnais; and three nieces, Tonya Kozuch, Park Falls, Wis., Kathy Daub, Ancheny, Iowa, and Valerie Yaros, Birmingham, Mich. She was preceded in death by her mother. A memorial gathering was held May 13 at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Monteno. Burial was private. Memorials to the family would be appreciated.

Edward J. Burd, 90, Crystal Lake, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, Woodstock. He was born Oct. 25, 1915, in Buffalo, N.Y., to John and Jennie (Clark) Burd. He married Doris Rowell Aug. 25, 1974, in Carpentersville. He was a former member of the Harvard Moose Lodge, as well as the Fox River Grove and Crystal Lake Senior Citizens. He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie (Edward) Rammon, Elgin; three stepchildren, Kathleen Matthews, Peoria, Ariz., Stephen (Cathleen) Rowell, Woodstock, and Sandra (Gordon) James, Fox River Grove; six grandchildren, Jeffrey James, Fox River Grove, Michael and Daniel Rowell, Woodstock, Richard and Barbara Martin and Nicole Rammon; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, April 6, 2006; a brother, John Burd; and an infant sister. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 28, at Valley Hi Nursing Home, 2406 Hartland Road, Woodstock. Interment will be at 11 a.m., April 28, in Crystal Lake Memorial Park, 8012 Ridgefield Road, Crystal Lake. Memorials can be made to Hospice of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. David C. Simpson
David C. Simpson, 63, Woodstock, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates. He was born June 1, 1942, in Chicago, to Charles and Geraldine (Golden) Simpson. He married Sara Sconce Feb. 17, 1981, at Friendship Bible Church, Hopewell, Ind. He was a longtime resident of Crystal Lake and was employed as a computer programmer for Grumman Aviation Corp. He was very computer savvy and frequently taught classes to various organizations of people. He was a loving husband and father who instilled the idea of leading a good, virtuous life to his family. He had a competitive nature but treated everyone fairly and as a friend. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steve and Jeremy, both at home; a daughter, Karen Penderyn; and three grandchildren, Bille, Rolley and Amanda. The funeral service was held April 23 at The Pointe, Crystal Lake, with Deacon Joel Chrastka officiating. Memorials can be made to his family. Arrangements were made by McHenry County Burial and Cremation Society.

Margaret "Peggy" A. Balfanz, 67, Wonder Lake, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. She was born April 18, 1938, in Chicago, to James and Louise (Bartrum) Lynam. She married James Balfanz Sr., C.F.D. Ret., Nov. 7, 1959, in Chicago. She enjoyed crafts, needlepoint, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; three children, Theresa (Robert) Hoeckelberg, McHenry, Michael Balfanz, Wonder Lake, and James (Holly) Balfanz Jr., Johnsburg; five grandchildren, Alyssa, J and Abby Balfanz, all of Johnsburg, and Amanda and Barry Smith of Corinth, Miss.; a great-grandchild, Alison Grace Smith, Corinth; a brother, James (Kathy) Lynam, C.F.D. Ret., Amboy; a sister, Mary Lou Vojslavek, Muncie, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held April 22 at Colonial Funeral Home, McHenry. Ashley Ann Riggs, 16, Huntley, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, Wis. She was born Jan. 23, 1990, in Woodstock, to Richard and Denise (Downing) Riggs. She was a sophomore attending Huntley High School. She had many friends who loved her. She was very outgoing and enjoyed singing, art, volleyball and track. She loved being with her family and working with her grandmother in the Popcorn Wagon. She loved milking cows, riding on tractors, listening to country music and classic music, go-carting, bowling, swimming, rollerblading, shooting pool, lying out in the sun and walking on the beach. Survivors include her parents, Huntley; her maternal grandparents, Dale and Beverly Downing; a brother, Brian Matthew Riggs; two sisters, Amy Marie Brown and Stephanie Flora Riggs; her aunts, Debra (Charles) Perenchio, Donna Keller, Patricia Feit, Karen Veit and Robin Rickerson; her godmother, Stacy (Joe) Groves; and her godfather, Robert (Michelle) Phillips. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Archie and Pearl Riggs; her great-grandparents; and an uncle, Bradley Eugene Downing. Visitation was April 19 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was held April 20 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Len DiCicco officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Woodstock. A memorial is being established in Ashley's name to be designated for its use by her family.

Richard H. Derebey, 82, Woodstock and formerly of Deerfield and Chicago, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Woodstock Residence, Woodstock. He was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Chicago, to Chester and Ruth (Perry) Derebey. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was the owner of Albany Park Service in Chicago. Survivors include a son, Steve (Jeane) Derebey, Gig Harbor, Wash.; a son-in-law, Robert Jorgensen, Sleepy Hollow; four grandchildren, Shannon (Sean) Levitt, Crystal Lake, Lauren Derebey, Gig Harbor, Steve Jorgensen, Sleepy Hollow, and Karin (Ryan) Smith, Lake in the Hills; and a brother, Donald (Elida) Derebey, Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Jorgensen. A graveside service was held April 19 at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Arlington Heights. Ashley Ann Riggs, 16, of Huntley, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis. She was born Jan. 23, 1990, in Woodstock to Richard and Denise (Downing) Riggs. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 20, at the funeral home with the Rev. Len DiCicco presiding. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Woodstock. Charles Melvin Griswold, 73, Springville, Tenn., and formerly of Woodstock, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, in Springville. He was born Aug. 2, 1932, in Woodstock, to J. Wilbur and Florence (Briggs) Griswold. He married Diane Mills May 2, 1954. He lived in Woodstock until 2000, when he and his wife retired to Springville. He was president of Griswold Electric Inc., serving the Woodstock area for many years. He was a veteran, serving in the Army during the Korean War. He was a life member of Woodstock VFW Post 5040. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and indulging in his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Julie (Steven) Francis, Gosport, England, and Altha (Richard) Follett, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; three sons, Richard (Janis) Griswold, Genoa City, Wis., Charles (Debbie) Griswold Jr., Sanford, Maine, and Wilbur (Cindy) Griswold, Littleton, Colo.; his father-in-law, George Mills; seven sisters, Shirley (Charles) Mansfield, Irene Gatz, Dorothy Cardosa, Margaret Hahn, Beverly Kreutzer, Nancy (Marvin) Cairns and Rita (William) Rudzena; two brothers, Thomas (Alice) Griswold and John Griswold; eight grandchildren, Christine (Terry) Hunter, Heidi (John) Coombs, Hailey Griswold, Kate Follett, Molly Follett, Abby Follett, Charles Melvin Griswold III and Luke Griswold; and six great-grandchildren, Steven, Jake, Jorden and Tyler Hunter, Charlotte Hunter and Georgia Coombs. He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Gwendolyn Mills; two sisters, Marjorie Erber and Jeanne Kreutzer; and a brother, Robert Griswold. Brett Stephen Kasten, infant, Woodstock, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital, Oak Lawn. He was born Feb. 16, 2006, in Oak Lawn, to George and Cathryn (Rucker) Kasten. Survivors include his parents, Woodstock; his maternal grandparents, Bob and Jill Rucker, Marengo; his paternal grandmother, Marion Owens; his maternal great-grandmothers, Ethel Lewis, Marengo, and Bea Rucker, Marengo; his aunts and uncles, Matt (Nicole) Misiura, Kimberly Rucker, David Rucker, Jeff (Becky) Kasten, Mike Owens and Dan (Tina) Markovetz; and numerous great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by two maternal great-grandfathers, Jim Rucker and Joe Lewis. The visitation and funeral were held April 14 at Marengo United Methodist Church, Marengo, with the Rev. Steven Bullmer officiating. Interment was private for the family. Clifford T. Mackey, 85, Woodstock, died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at his home. He was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Hartland Township, to William and Susan (Woodbeck) Mackey. He married Lucille Minola Dec. 2, 1944, in Crystal Lake. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during World War II. He worked as a carpenter for 30 years, he held superintendent positions for Feeley Construction and the Ozarka Boat Co., and he had worked in the maintenance department of School District 155. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Woodstock Elks Lodge, the Woodstock VFW and the American Legion in Woodstock. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Maureen (Larry) Walton, Woodstock; a brother, James (Kay) Mackey, Beloit, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Marie (Dan) Durkee; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, William, Clarence, Frank and Vincent. The visitation and funeral were held April 12 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. Interment was April 13 at McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery, Woodstock. Memorials can be made to either the Woodstock Rescue Squad or to hospice.

Clarence G. Freund, 94, Woodstock, died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at Crystal Pines Healthcare Center, Crystal Lake. He was born Dec. 16, 1911, in McHenry, to Peter and Katherine (Schaid) Freund. He married Loretta Young April 19, 1934, in McHenry. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock. He worked at Woodstock Die Cast for 45 years. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Timothy Freund, Crystal Lake, and James (Alicia) Freund, Ashville, N.C.; two daughters, Shirley (Leo) Koller, Pittsville, Wis., and Karen Freund, Janesville, Wis.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lester, Earl and George "Bud"; two sisters, Luella and Marcella; and an infant son, Thomas. The visitation was held and Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated April 12 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Woodstock, with the Rev. Nicholas Federspiel officiating. Burial was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock. Memorials can be made to Gavers Community Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1724, Woodstock, IL 60098. Ethel M. Urbaniak
Ethel M. Urbaniak, 76, McHenry, died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. She was born Aug. 4, 1929, in Chicago, to Maurice and Helen (Steinbarcher) Johnson. She married Leonard Urbaniak May 14, 1949, in Chicago. She was a member of the Cary United Methodist Church. She greatly enjoyed crocheting and frequently would crochet afghans to give to friends, relatives and even to donate to PADS. Survivors include four children, Linda (Larry) Hillesheim, Nashville, Tenn., Greg (Tammy) Urbaniak, McHenry, Jerry (Peggy) Urbaniak, McHenry, and Leonard "Tarz" (Linda Ponkin) Urbaniak, Crystal Lake; five grandchildren, Corey, Sam, Jessie, Brett and Kristin; two great-grandchildren, Anna and Larry; two brothers, Richard Johnson, Milwaukee, and Maurice Johnson, Canada; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Buddy Johnson; and two sisters, Cecila Kotlaba and Marion Feddern. Visitation was April 11 at Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home, Woodstock. The funeral was April 12 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brett Hillesheim officiating. Myron L. Wormley, 91, a lifelong resident of Oswego, died Saturday, April 8, at Rush-Copley Medical Center, Aurora. He was born Oct. 7, 1914, to Arthur and Pearl (Garvey) Wormley. He married Frances Budd March 2, 1940, in rural Millbrook. He graduated from East Aurora High School and earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture at the University of Illinois. He farmed until 1959 when he began a career in farm real estate. He was very active in the community. He led the West River agricultural 4-H Club and was a member of the Kendall County Farm Bureau, the Grove Road Farmers Club and Masonic Lodge 303. He was Oswego Township Supervisor for 25 years and a Republican Precinct Committeeman for many years. He was elected to and served on the Oswego Grade School Board and the Kendall County Board and was a founding director of the Oswego Community Bank and the Kendall County Historical Society. He was a member of the Oswego Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife; three children, James (Cheryl) Wormley, Woodstock, Jean (Paul) Rothfusz, Weslaco, Texas, and Budd Wormley, Oswego; 11 grandchildren, Ryan (Gwen) Wormley, Woodstock, Paul (Rosemary) Wormley, Evanston, Matthew Wormley and fiancée Alexis Ashley, Chicago, Mark (Lydia) Rothfusz, Atlantic, Iowa, John (Elise) Rothfusz, Washington, Anne (Shawn) Johnson, Des Moines, Iowa, Mary (Jeffery) Foster, Des Moines, and Adam, Sara, Seth and Kendall Wormley, all of Oswego; 15 great-grandchildren; and friend and caregiver Anna Dobryanska. He was preceded in death by four infant grandsons. Visitation was April 10 at Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, Yorkville. The funeral service was held April 11 at the Oswego Presbyterian Church. Internment was in the Oswego Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Oswego Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 1976 Route 25, Oswego, IL 60543; or Shriners Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707.
