Jeanne Bresee Hindsley
Jeanne Bresee Hindsley, 76, of Winnetka died May 20, 2006.
Mrs. Hindsley was born Oct. 3, 1929 in Champaign, Ill. to Paul K. and Jo M. Bresee. She attended public schools in Champaign, graduating from Champaign High School in 1947. Her senior year, Champaign won the State men's basketball championship. Mrs. Hindsley knit the then coach, Harry Combs, a bright red pair of "lucky" socks, relatives said, to help during tournament time; a tradition Combs carried on as head coach of the University of Illinois basketball team.
She began her college life at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., but returned to Champaign to complete her college education at the University of Illinois, graduating as a Bronze Tablet Scholar.
In her senior year, Mrs. Hindsley appeared on the national cover of Colliers magazine as an Illinois beauty, a magazine series featuring Big Ten co-eds. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, serving as treasurer. In a chance photograph taken at the sorority's Spring Formal in 1950, she and five other Pi Phi's with their dates posed on a stairway. Those dates became their husbands. Thirty-eight years later they posed again on the same stairway. That picture, together with the original photo, caught the eye of a Chicago reporter who ran a feature on the six couples, still married to each other. The story was picked up by the Associated Press and carried across the country. A fifty year reenactment in 2000 was a feature story in the fall 2001 issue of Becoming Family magazine.
She married Harold "Huck" Hindsley in 1951. After a two year stint in the Army, the couple returned to Champaign, raising a family of four. Mrs. Hindsley was president of Junior Service League (now Junior League) in the late fifties.
Mrs. Hindsley was an active member of Kenilworth Union Church, serving on several committees. She also participated as a leader for Bible Study Fellowship. She was an ardent gardener, and planned many family trips including Kenya, Africa, house boating on the Mississippi River, travels through the western National Parks, sailing in the British Virgin Islands and trips to Jamaica.
Survivors include her husband, Harold; two sons, Scott (Amy) and Paul (Maureen); two daughters, Jody (Jonathan) Hess and Amy (Rich) French; ten grandchildren; and two sisters, Joanne Foley and Paula Reagan.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on June 1 at Kenilworth Union Church, 211 Kenilworth Ave. in Kenilworth.
