Annie Grice
Annie J. Grice, a resident of Evanston since 1962, died July 14, 2003 at Hospice of the North Shore in Skokie. She was 90.
She was born Oct. 15, 1912, in Tupelo, Miss.
Mrs. Grice worked as a care provider, baby-sitter and midwife for friends and family.
A member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Evanston, friends and relatives said she will be remembered as one whose home was open to all who needed shelter and food.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling, and son Johnny Clanton Sr.
Survivors include four grandchildren, several great- and great-great-grandchildren, two nieces and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held July 18 in the chapel at House of Thompson Mortuary in Evanston, with interment in Sunset Memorial Lawns in Northbrook.

Ceretha Hyde
Ceretha B. Hyde, a longtime resident of Evanston, died July 14, 2003 at Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home in Evanston. She was 83.
Born Feb. 29, 1920, in Eagleston, Tenn., she moved to Evanston at a young age and attended public schools.
Ms. Hyde, also known as "Babe," worked for Saks Fifth Avenue clothing store for 30 years until her retirement.
An avid reader who was her family's historian, she also enjoyed sewing, cooking and collecting glass figurines, relatives said.
As a youth, she became a member of Long Missionary Baptist Church in Evanston, which later became Springfield Missionary Baptist Church. She served on the mother's board and volunteered her time feeding less-fortunate people.
Ms. Hyde was preceded in death by a son, Timothy.
Survivors include son Allen J. (Cassandra); sister Berthene Hudson; three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held July 19 at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church, with interment in Sunset Memorial Lawns, Northbrook.

Donna McGowan
Donna M. (nee Limback) McGowan, a resident of Evanston for 17 years and formerly of Birmingham, Mich., died July 26, 2003 at Evanston Hospital. She was 70.
Born Dec. 19, 1932, in Chicago, she was a graduate of Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest and attended Barat College in Lake Forest.
Ms. McGowan was a homemaker.
Survivors include daughters Jenifer (Marty) Blackman of Wilmette and Mari (Bob) Bertog of Glenview; sons Michael of Ypsilanti, Mich., and John (Anna) of La Grange; eight grandchildren; a sister, Joan (Albert) Skinner of Northbrook; and a brother, Michael Limback of Nevada.
A private funeral Mass was celebrated July 30, 2003 at St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church in Evanston, with interment in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 820 Davis St., Suite 340, Evanston IL 60201.

Florence McHugh
Florence E. McHugh of Lincolnshire, a former resident of Evanston, died July 22, 2003 in Highland Park. She was 77.
She was born July 19, 1926, in Chicago.
Survivors include her husband, William, retired police chief of Evanston and Bartlett; daughters Kathleen (Jim) Gunther of Deerfield, and Margaret Shula and Sheila (David) Clark, both of Grayslake; son William Jr. of Lincolnshire and Kevin (Jennifer) of Mundelein; and six grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated July 26 at Holy Cross Church in Deerfield, with interment in Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville.

Frank C. Nieman
Frank C. "Bud" Nieman, 84, a resident of Glenview, died July 26, 2003 at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview.
Mr. Nieman was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Chicago. He graduated from Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wis., and played basketball for the University of Southern California, graduating in 1940.
That same year, Mr. Nieman played basketball for the traveling All Stars Team that routinely played against the Harlem Globetrotters. Mr. Nieman was also a CYO boxer and golfer and, from 1957 to 1960, coached basketball at Saint Francis Xavier grammar school in Wilmette.
Mr. Nieman was a Chicago advertising manager for American Home Magazine from 1949 to 1955, a Chicago advertising manager for Ladies Home Journal from 1955 to 1974, a Chicago advertising manager for Golf Magazine from 1974 to 1976 and a Chicago advertising manager for Knapp Publishing of Beverly Hills California from 1976 to 1986, when he retired.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy "Dody" Nieman (nee Lau) of Glenview; four sons, Chris Nieman of Libertyville, Jack (Kathy) Nieman of Orange County, Calif., Tom (Sally) Nieman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Drew (Lori) Nieman of Chicago; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview.
Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Northbrook.

Karl Robinson
Karl Robinson, 21, a former resident of Wilmette, died July 21, 2003 at Stanford University Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained in a July 1 motorcycle accident.
Mr. Robinson was born Aug. 24, 1981, in Ohio. His family moved to Wilmette when he was two, and he attended Central Elementary School. After third grade, he spent summers in Wilmette and the school year in California. He was enrolled at Foothill College pursuing his two major interests, computer science and creative writing. He hoped to have his own business and to write professionally.
Survivors include his father, Daniel (Christie) Robinson of Wilmette; his mother, Katherine (Russell) Button of Alameda Calif.; grandparents Ruth Robinson of Evanston, and Wayne and Ann Rieke of Alameda, Calif.; siblings Paige Robinson, Teagan Robinson and Joel Button; a cousin; and several aunts and uncles in Evanston, California and Pennsylvania.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003 at the First Congregational Church of Evanston, Hinman Avenue and Grove Street.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington VA 22203-1606.

Mabel Robinson
Mabel Estelle Robinson, 97, a former resident of Winnetka, died July 22, 2003 at Greenwich Woods Health Care Center in Greenwich, Conn.
Mrs. Robinson was born June 10, 1905 in Chicago, the daughter of Dodwell and Esther Shute Browne.
Mrs. Robinson was very active with many community organizations throughout her life and was also a member of First Baptist Church in Evanston and the Winnetka Congregational Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Steed of White Plains, N.Y., Bette Jean Plant of New London, N.H.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William S. Robinson; a granddaughter; three brothers, Walter, Norman and Raymond Browne; and one sister, Phyllis Browne.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Thomas J. Roche Jr.
Thomas Joseph Roche Jr., 79, of Lahaina, Hawaii and formerly of Barrington, died Monday, July 28, 2003, in Lahaina.
Mr. Roche was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Chicago. He was former president and Scholarship Board leader with Lahaina Rotary club. He worked as a business executive with United Airlines following World War II, at United Airlines headquarters in Chicago. He was a business entrepreneur who developed entertainment and travel companies in Chicago and Maui, Hawaii.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Lahaina; five sons, Thomas P. of Camarillo, Calif., Michael (Susan) of Evanston, John S. of Lahaina, James of Chicago and Patrick Lindgren of Kihei, Hawaii; five daughters, Meg Rist of Wilmette, Patti (Marcus) Wicks of Cape Giraudeau, Mo., Katie (Jory) Siegel of Glenview, Laura (Al) Crawford of Long Beach, Calif. and Meg (Peter) Kohn of Long Beach, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Catharine of Glenview.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1123 Church St. in Glenview. Interment will be in Hawaii. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 820 Davis St., Suite 340A, Evanston IL 60201.

Helen Stanfield
Helen Maria (nee Wise) Stanfield of Evanston, formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, died July 21, 2003 at Harmony at Home in Naperville. She was 80.
She was born July 10, 1923, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Mrs. Stanfield was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Evanston.
Preceded in death by her husband, Roger, she is survived by a daughter, Mary Ellen Stanfield of Evanston.
Private funeral services were held in Des Moines.

Nicholas Stoessel
Nicholas R. Stoessel, 57, of Evanston, died July 26, 2003 at St. Francis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Evanston.
Mr. Stoessel was an apartment building superintendent.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Liala Stoessel.
Survivors include several cousins.
A memorial service was held July 30, 2003 at Haben Funeral Home in Skokie, with interment in Maryhill Cemetery, Niles.

Josephine Swanson
Josephine Joann Swanson, a lifelong resident of Evanston, died July 22, 2003 at her home. She was 76.
She was born Oct. 11, 1926.
Mrs. Swanson worked at Shure Brothers Inc. in Evanston for 23 years until her retirement.
She was active in parish activities at the Ascension of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church in Evanston until its closing. She then became a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Evanston.
Mrs. Swanson was an avid doll collector.
Survivors include her husband, Vernon, whom she married in 1950; sons James (Gayle Cortez), Thomas and Stephan (Tina); and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated July 25 at St. Mary's Church in Evanston, with interment in St. Adelbert Cemetery, Niles.
Memorial contributions may be made to ENH Hospice, 5212 Old Orchard Road, Suite 200, Skokie IL 60077.

Nancy Wright
Nancy Ann (nee Arms) Wright of Yorkville, Ill., a native of Evanston and a former resident of Wilmette, died July 22, 2003 at her home. She was 81.
Born Sept. 23, 1921, she attended Wilmette schools and was a 1939 graduate of New Trier Township High School in Winnetka.
She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., for two years and received a bachelor's degree in speech and drama from the University of Michigan in 1943.
From 1943 to 1948, Mrs. Wright was employed at radio stations in Dayton, Ohio.; Rock Island, Ill.; Winston Salem, N.C.; and Allentown and Bethlehem, Pa.
After raising her family, she worked at Rand McNally in banking and book publishing, and later at the American Hospital Association in meetings and conventions. She retired in 1986.
Mrs. Wright was an active member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Over the years, she served in many other offices of the organization, including grand lecturer emeritus, past grand representative, S.D., and was a current member of Lorraine Chapter 70 in Oswego, Ill.
Survivors include her husband, George H.; sons Lewis E. (Terry) of Oswego, Ill., Russell H. of Sacramento, Calif., and David L. of Yorkville; daughter Sunny (Mark) Lofton of Rocklin, Calif.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers Arthur B. Arms of Flat Rock, N.C.; Richard E. (Louise) Arms of Arlington, Va., and John M. (Annalee) Arms of New York, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
An Order of the Eastern Star service was held July 25, 2003 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home in Yorkville. Interment is to take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Star Home, Macon IL 62544.
