Marcella M. Herbert
Marcella M. Herbert (nee Henry), 98, a resident of Evanston, died Aug. 4, 2003 at Presbyterian Homes in Evanston.
Mrs. Herbert was born Dec. 7, 1904, in Denver. Prior to moving to Evanston, she lived in Wilmette for 43 years.
Survivors include two sons, C. Theodore (Rosemary) Herbert and Robert V. (Judith) Herbert of Evanston; a granddaughter; and three grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles V. Herbert.
A memorial service was held Aug. 8, 2003 at the Elliott Chapel of the Presbyterian Homes in Evanston.
Interment is private.

Lillie Marceillars
Longtime Evanston resident Lillie Mae Marceillars (nee Montgomery) died Aug. 1, 2003 at Evanston Hospital. She was 89.
Mrs. Marceillars was born July 10, 1914, in Jackson, Miss. She spent her youth in many cities in the South, including Tupelo, Miss., and Augusta, Ga.
She graduated from Mississippi's Tougaloo College in 1938 and moved to Lexington, Miss., to teach. While there she met her future husband, Walter Henry Marceillars, who preceded her in death in September 2002.
After having two children, the couple moved to Chicago in 1954. Mrs. Marceillars continued her high school teaching career and became involved in the Berean Baptist Church.
Mrs. Marceillars was known for her dedication to her family and students, friends and relatives said.
When Mrs. Marceillars retired from teaching in 1979, she moved to Evanston to live with her daughter.
Called "Lillie Mae" by her family, Mrs. Marceillars was also known for her many talents, including singing, playing the piano, dancing, cooking and playing tennis.
Mrs. Marceillars is survived by her daughter, Anne Stewart; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held Aug. 7 at Reba Place Church.
Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie.

Frank C. Nieman
Frank C. "Bud" Nieman, 84, a resident of Glenview, died July 26, 2003 at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview.
Mr. Nieman was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Chicago. He graduated from Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wis., and played basketball for the University of Southern California, graduating in 1940.
That same year, Mr. Nieman played basketball for the traveling All Stars Team that routinely played against the Harlem Globetrotters. Mr. Nieman was also a CYO boxer and golfer and, from 1957 to 1960, coached basketball at Saint Francis Xavier grammar school in Wilmette.
Mr. Nieman was a Chicago advertising manager for American Home Magazine from 1949 to 1955, a Chicago advertising manager for Ladies Home Journal from 1955 to 1974, a Chicago advertising manager for Golf Magazine from 1974 to 1976 and a Chicago advertising manager for Knapp Publishing of Beverly Hills California from 1976 to 1986, when he retired.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy "Dody" Nieman (nee Lau) of Glenview; four sons, Chris Nieman of Libertyville, Jack (Kathy) Nieman of Orange County, Calif., Tom (Sally) Nieman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Drew (Lori) Nieman of Chicago; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 29 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview.
Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Northbrook.

Marie Reuter
Marie Reuter (nee Fleming), 84, a resident of Wilmette, died July 31, 2003 in her home in Wilmette.
Mrs. Reuter was born Jan. 17, 1919, in Chicago and she lived for a while in Rogers Park before moving to Wilmette.
Survivors include one son, George E. Reuter, Jr. of Wilmette; three daughters, Melinda (Ned) Buchbinder of West Bend, Wis., Kathleen (Robert) Noone of Evanston and Julie (Carl) Bova of Evanston; eight grandchildren; and her cousin, Eileen (Chuck) Marshall of Schaumburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Reuter.
Services were held on Aug. 4 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Wilmette.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 2821 Central St., Evanston IL 60201.

Moses Schwimmer
Cantor Moses Schwimmer, a resident of Evanston for 38 years, died Aug. 6, 2003 at his home. He was 85.
Mr. Schwimmer was born in 1918 in Dolha, Czechoslovakia. He studied at the Muncach Yeshiva in Hungary and apprenticed at the Temple Chorale Synagogue in Budapest.
Mr. Schwimmer survived the Holocaust, spending eight years in labor camps in Europe. At the end of the war, he escaped from the Russian side to join the Americans. He performed with the Yiddish theater that entertained in camps for displaced people in Munich, Germany. He also led High Holy Day services.
After the war, Mr. Schwimmer moved to the United States, where he hosted his own radio show on WVED Jewish Radio in New York City. He also became the cantor for nine years at Beth-El Synagogue in Lowell, Mass.
He married his wife, Barbara, a professional cellist, in 1957, and soon moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he again served as a cantor.
Mr. Schwimmer eventually moved to Chicago, where he served as cantor at Ezra-Habonim for 15 years and at Central Synagogue for 10 years.
Mr. Schwimmer also started his own piano-tuning business on the North Shore in the 1970s. A lover of music, he took up the viola and completed a family quintet, relatives said.
He also led blessings at the annual Hanukkah Menorah-lighting celebrations at Fountain Square Plaza in downtown Evanston.
He was active at the Lubavitch Chabad House/Northwestern Jewish Center.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Schwimmer is survived by daughter Celia (Paul) Arnold of Kansas City; sons Joel of California and Bill (Linda) of Evanston; brother Zalman of Florida; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at the Weinstein Family Services chapel in Wilmette.

Nicholas Stoessel
Nicholas R. Stoessel, 57, of Evanston, died July 26, 2003 at the St. Francis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Evanston.
Mr. Stoessel was an apartment building superintendent.
He served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Mr. Stoessel is survived by many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Laila.
A memorial service was held July 30 at Haben Funeral Home in Skokie, with the Rev. Jerry Twarog officiating.
Interment was in Maryhill Cemetery in Niles.

Dr. J. Andrew Cole
Dr. J. Andrew Cole, 50, a resident of Winnetka, died Aug. 12, 2004 in his home.
Dr. Cole was born Nov. 3, 1953 in Angola, Africa, the son of American missionaries Pastor C. Donald and Naomi Cole. He lived in central Angola until his family returned to the United States with the outbreak of political violence in 1965, and settled in the Chicago area. He received a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College and a master's and doctorate of philosophy from Biola University in La Miranda, Calif. For 19 years he worked as a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in Carol Stream and Winnetka.
In 1997, Dr. Cole returned to the central Angolan town of Kuito, which had been devastated by war. Over the next few years, Dr. Cole and his wife, Lynn, established RISE International, headquartered in Northfield, to raise money for the construction of schools in Kuito and other Angolan towns. Some of the money came from donations at their South Barrington church, Willow Creek Community Church. The Coles commissioned a Chicago architect, Scott Krohn, to create an efficient and cost effective design, erecting schools with local materials to reduce costs. Each schoolhouse cost $7,500 and the first five schools were built in 2003. The organization is building 25 in 2004 and plans to build another 75 for 2005.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn Ann Bergeson; three daughters, Megan (Daniel) Paustian, Stephanie Cole and Rachel Cole; one son, Ross Cole; and his parents, Pastor C. Donald and Naomi Cole.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 15 at Willow Creek Church.

Margaret E. Ferren
Margaret E. Ferren, 82, a 49-year resident of Northbrook, died August 12, 2004 in Evanston Hospital.
Mrs. Ferren was born Oct. 3, 1921 in Winneconne, Wis. She was a stewardess in the 1940s for United Airlines. Later was a longtime school secretary at Meadowbrook School in Northbrook. She was a charter member of Northbrook United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Henry; three sons, Patrick of Lyons, Colo., Andrew (Julie) and Michael; two brothers, Dr. Robert (Katie) Foulkes and David (Helen) Foulkes; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, Aug. 17, at The Northbrook United Methodist Church in Northbrook.

Ruth Bornarth
Ruth Bornarth (nee Rueckert) of Evanston died Aug. 10, 2003 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. She was 72.
Born in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 24, 1930, she earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas City and her master's degree from Northwestern University.
She taught science for 29 years at Lincolnwood School District 74's Lincoln Hall School.
Mrs. Bornarth was a member of the National Science Teachers Association.
She is survived by her husband, Donald M. of Evanston.
Funeral services were held Aug. 14, 2003 at the Donnellan Family Funeral Home in Evanston.
Interment was private.

Caroline Collins
Caroline Collins (nee Clow), 87, a resident of Northfield, died Aug. 16, 2003 at the Presbyterian Homes in Evanston.
Mrs. Collins was born July 11, 1916 in rural Wheatland Township, in a home that still stands today. Mrs. Collins is a direct decedent of the original founders in Will and Kane counties where Naperville now exists.
She attended Naperville High School and went on to North Central College.
Mrs. Collins was admitted into the American Society of Early American Decorators and restored antiques for local dealers. Several of her restorations were displayed around the Chicago area.
She was a member of the Northwestern University Guild and the Wilmette Woman's Club.
Survivors include three sons, James Franklin (Naomi) Collins of Bethesda, Md., and Jefferson Clow Collins of Evanston; and two grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harrison F. Collins.
A memorial celebration will be held at a later date.

Oscar Dennis
Oscar Dennis of Evanston died Aug. 7, 2003 at Evanston Hospital. He was 71.
Mr. Dennis, a sales clerk, was born Sept. 26, 1931, in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to Luther and Lillian Dennis.
He married his wife, Omidata, in July 1970 and immigrated to the United States in 1972.
Mr. Dennis was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Marcia and Althea; a son, Alton; two grandchildren; sisters Gertrude, Rosebel and Claris; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Aug. 13 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Evanston.
Interment was Aug. 14, 2003 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie.
