Shirley Ann Johns
Shirley Ann Johns, age 78, of Lanark died Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Mt. Carroll.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2007 at the Lanark Church of the Brethren, Pastor John Sgro officiated. Burial was in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitations were from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home, Lanark. A memorial has been established in her memory for the Lanark Church of the Brethren.
Shirley was born April 19, 1929 in Shannon, the daughter of B. Brice and Florence F. (Diehl) Cook. She was a 1947 Graduate of Shannon High School. Shirley married William W. Johns in December of 1964; he preceded her in death on November 3, 1995.
Shirley was employed by the State Bank of Freeport (now U.S. Bank) for over 26 years, serving as secretary, loan officer, and loan collections supervisor. She also led a class on consumer lending. Shirley was very proud of her membership in the Lanark Church of the Brethren, where she had served on the church board, was a lifetime deacon, and taught a Sunday school class for several years. She enjoyed her family, church family, friends, collecting antiques, decorating her home, shopping, eating out, music and theater.
Shirley is survived by her sister-in-law, Viola Cook of Shannon; two nephews, Rick (Marsha) Cook and Gary Cook; six great nephews, Matt, Mike, Mark, Marty, Jeff and Rick Cook; one great niece, Lisa Shurman; two great great nephews, Skyler Barncord and Caden Shurman; her birth son, Denny (Gail) Hutchins and family of Rockford; special friends, Gene and Bonnie Barklow, Carolee Zuck, Ruth Geary and Betty Felder.
Her parents; husband; sister, June Cook at 19; and brother, Harleth Cook, precede Shirley in death.

Dolores R. Merchant
Dolores R. Merchant, age 81, of Lanark died Friday, May 20, 2005 at her home.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark, Rev. Dan Rusmisel officiated. Burial was in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitations were from 4- 8 p.m. on Monday. A memorial has been established in her memory for the Lanark Church of the Brethren.
Dolores was born April 16, 1924 in Lanark, daughter of Harold and Pearl (Sweitzer) Gouker. She was a graduate of Lanark High School. Dolores married John "Bob" Robert Merchant Jr. on August 18, 1945 in Lanark. She was employed by Hoaks & Zentner Drug Store from 1943 to 1970 and then the Exchange State Bank for 22 yrs, from 1970 to 1992. She was a member of the Lanark Church of the Brethren. She was a member of the American Legion auxiliary in the 1940's & 1950's. She loved skiing and skating and was an avid booster of Eastland Sports.
Dolores will be deeply missed by her two sons, Curt (Marcia) Merchant of Lanark and Justin (Karen) Merchant of Lanark; one brother, Keith (Joyce) Gouker of Lanark; three grandchildren, Matthew Merchant, Sean Merchant and Jennifer Merchant; two great grandchildren, Devon and Kendyll; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her husband on November 1999, parents and one grandson, precede Dolores in death.

Donald E. "Hop" Winkler
Donald E. "Hop" Winkler, age 89, of Savanna, died May 21, 2005 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna.
A Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials may be given to the Savanna Volunteer Ambulance Association in Donald's memory. Donald was born January 10, 1916, the son of Henry and Ruby (Dailey) Winkler, in Savanna. He graduated from Savanna Township High School, Class of 1933. Donald served in the United States Army as a Technical Sargent during the World War II campaign. Donald married Genevieve Withhart on May 19, 1942 in Savanna. Genevieve died on January 29, 1993. Donald worked as an Assistant Postmaster in Savanna for 31 years, retiring in 1973. He was a life-member of the Mississippi Flyway Sportsman's Club. Donald loved spending time with his family and being supportive to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed being outdoors with nature, shooting trap with friends, playing cards, going on family picnics, ice-skating, and going squirrel hunting with his kids.
Donald will be deeply missed by his six children, Paul (Arlene) Winkler of Savanna; Julie (Roger) Basrak of Palatine; John (Gail) Winkler of Peoria; Patricia (Josh) Pendgraft of Sterling; Philip Winkler of Mundelein; and JoAnn (Russ) Winkler-Ehlers of Clinton, IA; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary (Don) Wolfe of Savanna; and his friends at the Pinnacle Place in Savanna. His parents, wife, and one brother, Earl Winkler, precede Donald in death.

Berness J. Adams
Berness J. Adams, age 81, of Thomson died Wednesday, May 2, 2007 in her home, surrounded by her loving family.
A funeral service was held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna, Reverend Thomas Moe and Pastor Lisa Mapes officiated. Interment took place in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in rural Savanna. Friends may call from 1-2 p.m., Saturday, May 5, 2007, one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Savanna or Mercy Hospice, 638 S Bluff Blvd., Clinton, IA, 54732, in Berness' honor. Berness was born on August 5 1925 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin the daughter of Sherwood C. and Mae L. (Elliott) Barth. She attended Savanna High School and graduated with the class of 1943. Berness married Donald W. Adams on January 7, 1951, in Lyons, Iowa.
Berness worked as a Bookeeper for Middle States Telephone Company, Adams and Dabron Department Store and the Savanna City Hospital all in Savanna, Illinois. She also worked for the Savanna Army Depot in the accounting department and retired from the Rock Island Arsenal as a Systems Cost Analyst in 1987. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Savanna, where she was active in the Esther Circle. Berness was a past President and a former member of the Savanna Junior Women's Club, she was also a past member of P.E.O. Most of all Berness loved traveling and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed her special friend, Teddy who is a Schipperke dog.
Berness is survived by her husband, Donald; one son, Donald (Kathy) Adams of Solon Springs, Wisconsin; two daughters, Linda Nolte of Washington and Bonny Adams of Chandler, Arizona; eleven grandchildren, Jacqueline Nolte of Davenport, Iowa, Ron (Kathy) Nolte of Metamora, Jennifer (Paul) Letcher of Washington, Zachary Adams of Savanna, Mackenzy (Andy) Walt of Solon Springs, Ben Adams of Denver, Colorado, Nikk Adams of Solon Springs, Cassandra (Lorenzo) Barbone of Beverly Hills, California, Tyler Blair of Tempe, Arizona, Andrea Blair of Beverly Hills and Adam Blair of Tempe; ten great-grandchildren, Abbigail, Allison, Olivia, Callan, Haley, Xavier, Rubyjane, Ezra, Leonardo and Oliver; two sisters, Erma Rocho of Savanna and Gloria McDonnell of Clinton, Iowa. Her parents, and one brother, Leroy, precede Berness in death.

Christine Vos
Christine Vos, age 84, of Mt. Carroll died Thursday, May 3, 2007 at her home.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Hope United Methodist Church in Chadwick. Reverend Dave Davies will be officiating. Inurnment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. Christine was born in Mora, Minnesota. on October 6, 1922, the daughter of John and Christine (Wilkens) Vandermyde. She graduated from Edison High School with the class of 1939 and later went to Cosmetology School in Rockford. Christine married DuWayne Vos on April 24, 1942 in Morrison.
Christine worked at General Electric for eighteen years. She was a longtime member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison where she also taught Sunday School. She was a member of Home Extension and served on the Carroll County Council on Aging Board. She enjoyed painting, gardening and spending time with her family.
Christine will be dearly missed by her husband DuWayne; one son, Gordon (Joan) Vos of Chadwick; two daughters, Faye (David) Livermore of Galesburg and Ellen (Robert) Etien of Bella Vista, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Derek (Brenda) Clevidence of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, Daniel (Nona) Clevidence of Ankeny, Iowa, Robert Etien of Schenectady, New York, Lynda (Bud) Erickson of Dunlap, Rebecca (Jeff) Harris of Springfield, Missouri, Charlotte Vos of Moline, Sarah (Terry) Foust of Savoy and Amber (Kurt) Bush of DeWitt, Iowa ; nine great-grandchildren, Brett, Emily, Jack, Morgan, Ryan, Casey, Breanne, Trevor and Trenton; one sister, Elizabeth (Fred) VenHuizen of Muscoda, Wisconsin; one half brother, John (Darlene) Vandermyde of Minneapolis, Minnesota.; three half sisters, Janice (Robert) DeVries, of Minneapolis, Minnesota., Sharon (Don) St. Germain of St. Paul, Minnesota., Mary (Ollie) Frederick of Minneapolis. Her parents precede Christine in death.

Megan Lynne Daehler
Megan Lynne Daehler, age 29, of Thomson passed away as a result of a life long illness, on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at her home in Thomson.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2007, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Thomson. Reverend Wayne Brinkmann of the St. John Lutheran Church, Clinton, Iowa officiated. Megan was born on August 27, 1977, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of David L. and Nadine (Ehrich) Daehler. She graduated from Thomson High School, Class of 1995. Megan attended Clinton Community College in Clinton, Iowa and the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, Iowa.
Megan worked for Air Tran Corporation in Quad Cities; America West Airlines in Arizona. She very much enjoyed working in the field of Travel & Tourism. Following health concerns with travel, Megan went to work at Buck's Barn Restaurant in Thomson.
Megan loved being with her family and friends; traveling, doing crossword puzzles and was an avid Chicago Cubs Baseball Fan.
Megan will be dearly missed by her mother, Nadine Daehler of Mesa, Arizona; her father and step-mother, David L. (Charlotte) Daehler of Thomson; grandparents, Alvin Ehrich of Mesa; a sister, Danae (Brian) McCormac and twin nephews, Tyler and Hayden McCormac all of DesMoines, Iowa; two step-sisters, Janine Bartels of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Beth Bartels of Clinton, Iowa.
Her grandparents, Florence Ehrich, Harold and ViVa Daehler; an aunt, Mary Ann Elder and uncle, Michael Ehrich, precede Megan in death.

Lillian Schlaeger
Lillian Schlaeger, age 97, died Saturday May 5, 2007 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home in Elizabeth. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.

Sara M. Dexheimer
Sara M. Dexheimer, age 85, of Savanna died Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the Big Meadows Nursing Facility in Savanna.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Savanna, with Father Dennis Atto as celebrant. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral mass. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. A rosary service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Sara's memory. Sara was born in Chicago on December 30, 1921, the daughter of Michael and Agnes (O'Keefe) McLaughlin. She attended Trinity High School in River Forest and graduated with the class of 1940. She married Fred E. Dexheimer on September 9, 1944 at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Chicago. Sara worked for Motorola in Schaumberg, as a Quality Control Supervisor for over ten years. Sara was a longtime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She was active in N.A.R.F.E. and the Savanna V.F.W. Auxilary. Sara enjoyed watching television and reading, but most of all Sara loved spending time with her family.
Sara will be missed by her husband, Fred; three sons, Frederick M. (Pat) Dexheimer of Batavia, Mark (Suzanne) Dexheimer of Lombard and Brian (Laurie) Dexheimer of Phoenix, Arizona; three daughters, Nancy (Michael) Hill of Lombard, Janice Dexheimer of Aurora and Karen Dexheimer of Wheaton; one sister, Catherine Sullivan of Oak Brook; fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her parents precede Sara in death.

Gloria L. Jurgens
Gloria L. Jurgens, age 60, of Savanna previously of Thomson passed away Monday, June 11, 2007 at her home in Savanna.
Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2007 at the York Community Church, Thomson, with Reverend Ron Abbott officiating. Burial was in the Lower York Cemetery, Thomson. Friends may call from 5­7 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Memorials may be given towards a Scholarship Fund in Gloria's memory. Gloria was born on March 1, 1947, the daughter of John and Theresa (Drolema) Eissens, Jr. in Morrison. She attended Thomson High School, graduating with the Class of 1965. Gloria went on to attend Eureka College in Eureka. She very much enjoyed playing the guitar, accordion and singing. In 1975, Gloria married Jan Jurgens. For many years Gloria drove a school bus for Savanna School District transporting Special Education Students to Galena. She was currently employed at Pinnacle Place in Savanna as a cook, and had served as an Election Judge for Carroll County. Gloria enjoyed reading and cooking, she was known as a "great" cook.
Gloria will be dearly missed by her four children, daughters, Jessica (Donald) Salsbury of Lawrence, Kansas and Julie Jurgens of Chicago; two sons, John and Jeff Jurgens of Savanna; a brother, Leon Eissens of Fulton; and a sister, Patricia (William) Nesbitt of Conway, Missouri. Her parents precede Gloria in death.

Donald LaVerne Kaufman
Donald LaVerne Kaufman, 84, of Big Spring and formerly of Sabula, IA died May 3, 2007 in Tucson, AZ.
He was born Nov. 21, 1922 in Carroll County, to Vernon and Cora (Lotz) Kaufman. He married Unice Schroeder on Sept. 18,1949 at the Methodist church in Sabula. He attended high school for two years in Savanna. He graduated from Thomson High School and the University of Illinois. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Texas. He held positions at Lanark H.S. Agriculture Dept., Clinton Engines at Maquoketa and AMF, DesMoines, IA. Also, in states of Ohio, Michigan and California. After retiring, he lived in Phoenix, AZ. and Sabula before moving to Big Spring.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard (Dottie) of Norman, Oklahoma and Donald D. (Jackie) of Altoona, IA; four grandchildren, Eric and Mary, and Jayne and Kris; and one brother, Earl W. (Dorothy) Kaufman of Morrison area.
His parents, and one brother, Vernon Ray Kaufman, Milwaukee, WI on Oct. 27, 2006 precede Donald in death. Interment will be at a later date.

Joyce B. Malone
Joyce B. Malone, 76, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at her home in Clinton, Iowa.
A Graveside Service was held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 15, 2007 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Sabula, Iowa, with Reverend Michael Brewer of the New Hope Lutheran Church, Clinton, Iowa officiating. A memorial fund has been established in Joyce's memory. Condolences may be sent to the family on www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Joyce was born on July 16, 1930, the daughter of Herman and Merlyn (Miller) Huebner in Miles, Iowa. Joyce married Clifford "Cork" Malone on April 23, 1948, in Clinton, Iowa.
Joyce worked for the Oxford Speaker Factory in Sabula, Iowa for many years. She was also a homemaker who loved rising and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed flea markets, flower gardening and her favorite flower was the Iris. She collected salt and pepper shakers and was a former member of the Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers Club.
Joyce will be dearly missed by her husband, Clifford of Clinton; two daughters, Merlyn (John) Law of Clinton, and Patricia (Robert) Lutz of Clinton, two sons, Michael Malone of Sabula and John (Wendy) Malone of Miles, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her parents; two brothers Charles and Lawrence Huebner; and one sister, Joan Houston; and one great-grandson, Kye Smith, precede Joyce in death.

June Patricia "Pat" Abad
June Patricia "Pat" Abad, age 85, of Savanna died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.
A Grave Side Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2007 at Savanna Township Cemetery in Savanna with Deacon Cary Brock Chaplin of Genesis Hospice officiating. Memorials may be given to Genesis Hospice, 2535 Maple Crest Rd., Bettendorf, Iowa in Pat's memory. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Pat was born on June 2, 1922, the daughter of Paul and Edna Huddleston in Somerset, Indiana. She attended the Jackson Park Hospital College of Nursing in Chicago graduating in 1940. Pat married Francis Louis Abad Sr. who passed away in 1948.
Pat was a Registered Nurse for forty-nine years. Pat worked for several years at the Savanna City Hospital. She also worked as the Savanna school nurse and for Doctor Turner and spent thirteen years working at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Aurora. Pat was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Savanna VFW Auxiliary. Pat enjoyed small animals and traveling.
Pat will be dearly missed by her son, Lou Abad of Denver, Colorado; a granddaughter, Heather Mist Abad of Yellowstone Nat. Park, Wyoming.; two nieces, Pam Hindman and Cindy Anders of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and a nephew, Paul B. Huddleston of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; and two cousins, Wilma Pauley of Mt. Carroll and Marlene (Tommy) Smith of Savanna.
Her parents; her husband; and one brother Paul F. Huddleston, precede Pat in death.
