Andrews, Russell H.
September 14, 2003
SARASOTA, Fla. - Russell Harper Andrews, 95, of Sarasota, Fla., died Sept. 7, 2003, at the Plymouth Harbor Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 13, 1907, in Kewanee, the son of James Harper and Eva Russell Andrews.
He married Alice Griffith of Galesburg on Aug. 23, 1932.
Surviving are his wife of Sarasota, Fla.; a son, James Harper Andrews, Chicago; a daughter, Caroline Porter, Galesburg; two sisters, Frances Forsyth, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Jean Andrews, Dearborn, Mich.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Campbell and John.
He graduated from Knox College and Harvard Law School.
He practiced law in Kewanee for 50 years with his father, James H . Andrews, and brother, Campbell Andrews. He retired to Sarasota, Fla., in 1982.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the coastal artillery, anti-aircraft school and Judge Advocate General's office.
He served many years on the boards of People's National Bank in Kewanee and Kewanee Public Hospital. He was active in the First Congregational Church and the American Red Cross. He was city attorney and active in the Henry County Democratic Party organization and was chairman of the central committee in the 1940s. He was chairman of the area American Field Service foreign exchange student committee for 10 years.
A memorial service was Thursday at Plymouth Harbor in Sarasota, Fla. A small service will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee at a later date.

Walter Anell
October 27, 2003
WATAGA - Walter Anell, 92, Wataga, died Saturday (Oct. 25, 2003) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
He was born April 8, 1911, in Maquon, the son of Simon V. and Jenny E. Moll Anell.
He married Berniece Williams on June 23, 1949, in Altona.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Brent Anell, Wataga, Craig Anell, Galva, and Mark (and Deborah) Anell, Iuka, Kan.; a brother, Carl Anell, Galesburg; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and an infant sister.
He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II.
Graveside service with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Wataga Cemetery, with the Revs. Marilyn Anell and Terry Hallock officating. No visitation is planned. Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory, Muscatine, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.

Quinten K. Appell
October 28, 2003
GALVA - Quinten Krantz Appell, 83, rural Galva, died at 10:35 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.
He was born April 16, 1920, in Galva, the son of Edward and Ruth Krantz Appell.
He married Margaret Peterson on Nov. 9, 1941, in Galva.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Judith (and Richard) Skeen, Salt Lake City, Utah; two sons, David (and Ann) Appell, Galva, and Paul (and Jill) Appell, Altona; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.
He graduated from Galva High School and attended the University of Illinois.
He farmed and was a pork producer.
He was a member of the Galva Masonic Lodge and Messiah Lutheran Church. He was president of the Illinois Pork Producers Association from 1975 to 1976 and had received various awards from the pork industry, including being inducted into the Knox County Pork Producers Hall of Fame.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Carole Andres officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rux Funeral Home, Galva. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to his church.

Armstrong, Martha
February 14, 2004
VIOLA - Martha Marie Armstrong, 77, Viola, died at 4:50 a.m. Friday (Feb. 13, 2004) in Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.
She was born Feb. 18, 1926, in Monmouth, the daughter of Harlan E. and Clytie Logsdon Johnson.
She married Robert Eugene Martin on Sept. 20, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo. She married Junior Leroy Armstrong on Dec. 15, 1967, in Galesburg.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen Marie Bruce, Viola; a sister-in-law, Nancy Johnson, Kirkwood; two sisters, Phyllis Johnson and JoAnne Needham, both of Monmouth; four brothers, Harlan (and Delores) Johnson and Tony (and Barb) Johnson, both of Monmouth, Brad (and Diane) Johnson, Kirkwood, and Danny (and Vicki) Johnson, Oquawka; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Laura Ella, a sister and a brother.
She worked at Western Stoneware and as a supervisor at Formfit Company in Monmouth and Smolers. She owned and operated Martha's Family Restaurant in Viola from 1984 to 1998.
She was a member of Viola United Methodist Church and Moose Lodge Home Chapter 3000.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with the Rev. Thomas Wright officiating. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Monday in Viola United Methodist Church; family will be present from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth.

Arnold, James E.
November 16, 2003
GALESBURG - James E. Arnold, 61, 753 Century Estates, died 8:10 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 15, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born March 9, 1942, in Galesburg, the son of Estill and Dorothy Miller Arnold. He married Martha D. Goshert on Sept. 10, 1966, in Galesburg.
Surviving are his parents, Estill Arnold, Milan, and Dorothy Boostrom, Galesburg; two daughters, Stephanie C. (and Komla Penty) Arnold, Chicago, Kathryn L. Arnold, Monmouth; one brother, Eldon (and Beverly) Arnold, Pekin; and three sisters, Mary Smith, Galesburg, Jackie (and Darron) Niles, Rock Island, and Christa Arnold, Davenport, Iowa.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1960 and was a member of the 1959 GHS basketball team that just was inducted into the GHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended Western Illinois University.
He served in the Navy from 1961 to 1962.
He worked for the former Intra State Telephone Company for nine years. He then worked for S&S Distributors for eight years and last worked for G&M Distributors for 15 years, retiring in 2001.
He was a former member and past president of the Noon Lions Club.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. John Carlson officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
Memorials may be made to Warren Achievement Center, Monmouth.

KNOXVILLE - Minnie Arthur, 94, 407 N. Hebard St., died at 6 a.m. Sunday (April 4, 2004), in the Good Samaritan Nursing Home of natural causes.

ROSEVILLE - Bessie M. Askew, 98, Roseville, died at 3:45 a.m. Friday (June 20, 2003) at the LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.

Asplund, J. Wilbur

ONEIDA - J. Wilbur Asplund, 96, rural Oneida, died Sunday (Feb. 22, 2004) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital of natural causes.

Asplund, John W.
February 24, 2004
ONEIDA - John Wilbur Asplund, 96, 2426 Knox Road 100E, died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 22, 2004), in Galesburg Cottage Hospital of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 20, 1907, in rural Oneida, the son of John W. and Clara Anderson Asplund.
He married Laura N. Johnson on Sept. 4, 1930, in Henderson Grove. She died Jan. 29, 2000.
Surviving are one son, James (and Wanda) Asplund, Oneida; two daughters, Carolyn (and Berkley) Johnson, Visalia, Calif., and Martha Schultz, LaGrange; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and four brothers.
He was reared and educated in Oneida, graduating from Oneida High School in 1925.
He was a farmer and farmed with his father, living all his life on the family farm. He retired at the age of 82 in 1980.
He was a life member of the Faith Lutheran Church of Wataga, where he served as deacon, board member and president of the board.
He was a trustee for Ontario Township for seven years; served on the ROVA High School board for nine years and secretary for seven years; served as a director of the Kewanee Production Credit Association from 1939 to 1969; and served as a director of Farmer Co-Op for 30 years, serving as secretary, board member, vice president and president.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, Wataga, with the Rev. Jill Vivroux officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Oneida Cemetery. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Oneida, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church of Wataga.

Ater, Nellie M.
May 6, 2004
MONMOUTH - Graveside service for Nellie Margaret Ater, 94, Church Hill, Tenn., formerly of Monmouth, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Warren County Memorial Cemetery.
She died March 26, 2004, in Church Hill Rehab Center. Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund, Box 847, Church Hill, TN 37642.

Auer, Wilma J.
December 15, 2003
ELLISVILLE - Wilma June Auer, 78, Ellisville, died at 10:35 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 14, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Jan. 13, 1925, in Brimfield, the daughter of Lloyd and Esther Porter McKown.
She married John Auer on Nov. 29, 1949, in Peoria. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are four sons, Pete (and Mona) Bale, Perry, Okla; Mike (and Chris) McKown and Fred (and Kathy) McKown, both of Ellisville, and Steven (and Cathy) McKown, Dunlap; three daughters, Theresa (and Mel) Stoetzer, Abingdon, Sue (and Alvin) Morse, Knoxville, and Debbie (and Bob) Hare, St. Augustine; two sisters, Vernetta Lindsey, Rockford, and Gladys Brining of Missouri; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She and her husband raised 28 foster children. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
She was raised in Brimfield and lived in the Ellisville area for many years.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Corman Memorial Home, Avon, where visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will be in the Brimfield city cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Ellisville Go-Getters.
