Martinez, Nellie J.
November 30, 2003
GALESBURG - Nellie J. Martinez, 90, 1142 Jefferson St. Galesburg, died at 9:57 a.m. Friday (Nov. 28, 2003) at Rosewood Care Center.
She was born May 14, 1913, in Brumswick, N.C., the daughter of Everett and Rosa Sellers Reynolds.
She married Sam J. Martinez on November 16, 1941, in Marion S.C. He died April 15, 1996.
Surviving are one son Donald (and Janice) Martinez, Galesburg; and one sister Dorothy Morris, Wilmington, N.C.; two grandchildren, one step grandchild, two great grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Oxendine.
She worked in housekeeping at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for 18 years retiring in 1985; she later cared for elderly people in Galesburg. She was a junior director for Modern Woodman Insurance Company for 10 years, and a volunteer for the Community Chest in Galesburg.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at East Linwood Cemetery with Rev. Paul Lydic officiating. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.

Otho Masterson
September 22, 2003
MATTESON - Otho Masterson, 80, Matteson, formerly of Park Forest and Galesburg, died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003).
Surviving are his wife, Joan (Sullivan) Masterson; three daughters, Deborah (and Joseph) Marconi, Park Forest, Elizabeth (and Don) Mailhoit, Manteno, and Lisa (and Ron) Morrow, Steger; four sons, Robert (and Susan) Masterson, Streamwood, Brian (and Debbie) Masterson, Palm Harbor, Fla., Michael (and Debbie) Masterson, Chicago Heights, and John (and Cindi) Masterson, Olympia Fields; four sisters, Marjorie Cecil and Ethel Marie Peterson, both of Baytown, Texas, and Helen McLaughlin and Mary Sullivan, both of Galesburg; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother.
He was the senior systems analyst at United Airlines for 36 years.
He was a retired lieutenant colonel of the Air Force, and was a World War II prisoner of war in Germany for 22 months at Camp Stalag XVIIB.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 521 in Steger, AARP in Rich Township and St. Irenaeus Church in Park Forest.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Irenaeus Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hirsch Lincolnway Chapel, 3501 West Lincoln Highway, Matteson. Burial will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

Ruth N. Mata
October 27, 2003
GALESBURG - Ruth N. Mata, 91, 477 E. North St., died at 11:23 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 25, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born May 25, 1912, in Jalisco, Mexico, the daughter of Santos and Ruth Flores Navarro.
She married Aurilio Mata in 1970, in Morrison.
Surviving are her husband; a son, Louis Mendosa, Merryville, Ind.; a daughter, Blanche (and Julian) Barajas, Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m.Wednesday in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home, with the rosary recited at 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Maxwell, Howard E.
May 8, 2004
KIRKWOOD - Howard E. Maxwell, 98, rural Kirkwood, died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (May 6, 2004) in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
He was born Aug. 21, 1905, in Galesburg, the son of Henry and Florence Love Maxwell.
He married M. Louise Clark on Dec. 22, 1928, in Monmouth. She died May 10, 2001.
Surviving are a son, Henry L. (and Barbara) Maxwell, Naperville, two grandsons, three great-grandchildren and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
He was reared and educated near Kirkwood and attended Hazel Del School.
He farmed all his life in Henderson County.
He was a member of Biggsville United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Biggsville Cemetery, with the Rev. Carol Stufflebeam officiating. No visitation is planned. Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to his church.

Mayer, Judith A.
July 31, 2004
DAHINDA - Judith A. Mayer, 63, 5 Parkwood Circle, Oak Run, formerly of Chicago, died at 5 p.m. Thursday (July 29, 2004) at home of natural causes.
She was born Oct. 3, 1940, in Chicago, the daughter of Frank and Ann Renner Lucid.
She married Robert L. Mayer on Oct. 1, 1960, in Chicago.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Linda Marie Mayer, Chicago Ridge; a son, Jack Mayer, Oak Lawn; and her mother of Winter Haven, Fla. She was preceded in death by her father.
She was reared and educated in Chicago. She graduated from Longwood High School, Chicago.
She was a homemaker and worked at the former Weibolt Clothing Store and Marshall Clothing Store in Chicago, and JC Penney's in Galesburg.
She attended St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Wataga.
She became a part-time resident of Oak Run nine years ago and moved there permanently five years ago.
She was a member of the Oak Run Communicator Committee. She wrote an article entitled "Thoughts To Ponder" in the August/September 2004 issue of the Oak Run Communicator.
Cremation will be accorded. No services are planned. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, where there will be a eulogy by Jack Mayer at 8 p.m. Burial will be later.
Memorials may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

McCarty, John D.
October 26, 2003
BUSHNELL - John D. McCarty, 76, died at 11:35 p.m. Friday (Oct. 24, 2003) in the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.
He was born June 10, 1927, in Vermont, Ill., the son of Arthur and Veda McKinley McCarty.
He married Barbara Palmer on Aug. 5, 1950, in Canton.
Surviving are his wife, four sons, David McCarty, Macomb, Monte McCarty, Adair, Rickie McCarty, Bushnell, and Kanial McCarty, Bushnell; two daughters, Linda Kaffer, Bushnell, and Margo Maloney, Macomb; two brothers, Arthur McCarty of Colorado, and Eugene McCarty, Chester; two sisters, Dorothy Thrasher, Galesburg, and Fay Orfans, Lewistown; 12 grandchildren and three grea-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
He retired from Burlington Northern Railroad.
Cremation will be accorded. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Broady officiating. No visitation is planned. Burial will be later.
Memorials may be made to any charity.

McCoy, Donna L.

GALESBURG - Donna Lucille McCoy, 74, 1013 Washington Ave., died at 1:50 a.m. Tuesday (July 27, 2004) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She was born June 22, 1930, in St. Augustine, the daughter of Thomas D. and Mary Ann Hagan Peake.
She married Robert E. McCoy on May 6, 1950, in Alexis.
Surviving are her husband; two sons, Robert (and Peggy) McCoy Jr. and Kevin (and Margo) McCoy, both of Galesburg; three daughters, Mary L. Langan, Scottsdale, Ariz., Kathleen McCoy, Wataga, and Leslie King, Galesburg; two brothers, Joseph (and Jeananne) Peake, Galesburg, and Thomas (and Marilyn) Peake, Alexis; one sister, Mary Katherine Heiar, Clinton; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two sisters and one brother.
She worked at Gale Products for 17 years, and then at the Knox County Nursing Home for eight years until her retirement in 1992.
She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Watson Funeral Home, with the rosary to be recited at 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Dominican Mother House in Sinsiniwa, Wis.

YATES CITY - Donna L. McDonald, 71, rural Yates City, died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 27, 2003), in the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.
She was born Nov. 11, 1932, in Elmwood, the daughter of Louis and Sarah Sloan Windish.
Surviving are two sons, Scott (and Vicky) McDonald, St. Charles, Mo., and Jim McDonald, San Diego; one daughter Sarah "Sally" (and Ronnie) Sago, Peoria; one brother, Larry Windish, Joliet; and one sister, Jama (and Jack) Bickford, Arlington Heights.
She lived all her life near Yates City.
She was a nurse from 1970 to 1991 in Galesburg and Peoria.
She was a member of the Yates City United Presbyterian Church; and had been a 4-H leader for 25 years.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Patterson Funeral Home, Elmwood, with the Rev. Mary Babcock officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Yates City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

McFate, Patricia L.

ROCK ISLAND - Patricia L. McFate, 70, Rock Island and Mission, Texas, died Friday (April 23, 2004).
She was born Jan. 5, 1934, in Galesburg, the daughter of Althoff L. and Mary L. Pattison Edler.
She married Jerry Griffin Fout in Oct., 1954. She married Franklin J. McFate in November 1988. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are her children, John (and Molly) Fout, Theresa (and Rod) Foster, James Fout, Robert (and Nicole) Fout, Joe (and Rita) Fout, Cynthia Salmonson, Tom (and Michelle) Fout, Mike (and Karen) Fout and Katherine (and Mike) Bellis; her mother, Mary L. Sullivan; her stepchildren, Connie (and John) Ryan, Kathy (and Ken) Shoemaker, Karen McFate, Steven McFate and Michael (and Carolyn) McFate; a stepsister, Sharon (and Mark) Ruehle; a stepbrother, Roger (and Nina) Sullivan; 17 grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her father and a daughter-in-law, Brandy.
She graduated with honors from Rock Island High School in 1951.
She worked at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retirng as chief procurement officer in 1994.
She coordinated Christmas collections for the needy, taught religious education, sang in the St. Pius X Church choir, volunteered at the Headstart Program and was an English language tutor for children in Mission, Texas.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where visitation will follow until 6 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Mausoleum, Rock Island.
Memorials may be made to the D.A.R.E. Program of the Rock Island Police Department.

McGlothlen, LaMont C.

GALESBURG - LaMont C. "Mac" McGlothlen, 86, a resident of the Illinois Veteran's Home, Quincy, formerly of Galesburg, died at 10:36 a.m. Monday (Sept. 1, 2003) in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.
He was born Sept. 20, 1916, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Grover C. and Minnie V. Fern McGlothlen.
He married Betty Cecilia Stackhouse on June 30, 1940, in Galesburg. She died March 4, 2001.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald Lee (and Jackie) McGlothlen, Libertyville, and Thomas Eugene (and Debbie) McGlothlen, Edelstein; and three grandchildren.
He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1936 and attended the University of Iowa and Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa.
An Air Force veteran of World War II, he specialized in classification and interrogation.
He graduated from the American College of Life Underwriters in 1969.
He worked as a salesman for Illinois Power Company in Galesburg for 13 years. He also was a salesman for New York Life Insurance Company, general manager of the Central Illinois Region, based in Peoria, retiring 1978. He continued in sales part time until 1999.
He was a member and past master of Abingdon Masonic Lodge 185, was a 32nd degree Mason with the Peoria Consistory and the Mohammed Shrine Temple in Peoria. He was a member and past president of the Galesburg Jaycees, receiving the Giessenbier Memorial Award for outstanding chapter in Illinois and the No. 3 chapter in the nation, and was inducted into the Illinois Jaycees Hall of Fame in 1996. He had been a member and past president of the Illinois Junior Chamber of Commerce and was awarded the Clayton Frost Memorial Award as outstanding state president.
He was a member and past president of the Cancer Fund and Heart Fund in Galesburg, served as chairman of the Youth Center Board and Carver Center, was a co-chairman of the United Way in Galesburg, and a member and past president of the Central Illinois General Manager's Association. He was a member and past president of the Galesburg Kiwanis Club and had served as lieutenant governor of Division 8 Kiwanis International. He received the Distinguished Lt. Gov.'s Award for 1974-1975 for the Illinois/Iowa District.
He had served as secretary-treasurer of the Illinois State Bond Drive and was appointed by Gov. Stevenson as board chairman of the State of Illinois Public Safety Commission.
He was recipient of the National Management Award of the National Association of Life Underwriters in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976.
He lived in Galesburg, Decatur, Glenview, Aurora and Peoria. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. James Middleton officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 8 p.m. by Masonic Lodge 185. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 411 W. Lake St., Peoria, IL 61614.
