Helen Schreck

Helen Schreck, age 100, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 6:02 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth. Helen was born on May 27, 1907, in rural Smithshire, Illinois, the daughter of James and Mary Lucy Quigley St. Ledger.
Helen was reared in Smithshire area attending Chatanooga rural school in Point Pleasant Township, then Immaculate Conception School and High School. She then attended Business College in Burlington, Iowa. Helen married Carl B. Schreck on May 31, 1935 at St. Partircks Catholic Church in Raritan, Illinois. He preceded in death on October 26, 1991. Helen worked first as a secretary at Illinois Bankers Life Insurance Company in Monmouth for ten years. Helen was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Raritan and a member of it's Altar and Rosary Society. When they moved to the Greenbush area Helen became a member of the St.Augustine Catholic Church and it's Altar and Rosary Society. While there, she also taught CCD for the parish and was a member of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women serving as Parent Family Chairman for two years. Helen was a member of the Warren County Farm Bureau Women's Committee and served as it's Secretary for several years. Helen also volunteered at the LaMoine Christian Nursing Home over twenty-five years. After the death of her husband, she moved to Monmouth and is a member of Immaculate Conception Church and it's Altar and Rosary Society, and the Legion of Mary. Helen enjoyed gardening and flowers, and playing bingo and cards. She was a big fan of Notre Dame Football since the Knute Rochne era. Helen loved her family, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren and attending their Little League Softball Games. She also liked to Crochet and was an avid reader.
Surviving Helen are her two Daughters Mary Ann Liggett of Las Vegas, Nevada and Eileen & Ed Roe of Monmouth, Illinois. Three Sons survive....James & Shirley Schreck of Monmouth, Illinois; John & Janet Schreck of Roseville, Illinois; and William & Freida Schreck of Riverton, Illinois. She has Nineteen Grandchildren, Thirty-Two Great Grandchildren , and Three Great Great Grandchildren. Helen is preceded in her death by her Parents, Husband, her Infant Daughter Mary Therese, Five Sisters...Marie St.Ledger, Anna Trussell, Margaret Heidenreich, Monica Vail, and Rita Brinton, Three Brothers Edmund, Leo, and Infant Philip St.Ledger, and her Son in Law Jerry Liggett
Services: Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth, on Friday April 4th, at 9:30 am. Interment is to be in St.Patrick's Cemetery in Raritan, Illinois. Her family will recite the Rosary on Thursday evening at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois at 6:30 pm and will receive friends following the Rosary. A memorial fund is being established for either Immaculate Conception Church or Immaculate Conception School.

Marshall K. Smith

Marshall K. Smith, age 92, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, Illinois. Marshall was born on May 22, 1915 the son of Wallace R. and Ethel Denisar Smith.
He was reared in the Cameron area attending schools in Cameron and Galesburg. He moved to Grand Rapids, MN where he graduated from High School.
Marshall served in the Navy in the South Pacific during WWII, he was a Seabee.
Marshll was a bee keeper in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, for many years. He also drove a truck for the Mayflower and United moving Lines.. For a time he was a mechanic for Marathon Gas Station in Sycamore, Illinois.
Marshall was a life long member of the American Legion. He enjoyed reading and working on cars.
He is survived by his sister Imogene S. Swanson of Decatur, Illinois, one brother Zane Smith of Spring Valley, California, eleven nieces and nephews and twenty-five great nieces and nephews.
Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Quentin and two sisters Maxine Brown and Margaret Irvin.
Services: A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. His family will receive friends at Turnbull's from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Interment with militray honors will be in the Silent Home Cemetery, Cameron. In lieu of flowers a memory fund is being established for either American Legion, American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Richard H. "Dick" McNitt

Richard H. "Dick" McNitt, age 66, of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 1:37 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2008, at the Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. Dick was born on March 16, 1942, in St. Joseph, Michigan, the son of Warren and Eileen Nelson McNitt. He was reared by his Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Harold Nelson, and was educated in rural schools in Little York, and graduated from Little York High School in 1960. He married Carol Jones on November 10, 1961, in Rozetta, Illinois. He attended and graduated PTI (Police Training Institute) in Champaign, Illinois.
In the 1970's, Dick served as a police officer for the Monmouth Police Department. He was also a journeyman diesel mechanic at Munson Transportation for many years. In 1986, they moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, where he served as a service manager for Palm Beach International. In 1997, they returned to Oquawka, Illinois. Dick enjoyed fishing, hot rods, classic cars, and anything with four wheels. He also did auto body work at his home for pleasure.
Dick is survived by his wife, Carol McNitt of Oquawka, Illinois, one daughter, Sandra K. Besse of Wellington, Florida, one son, Michael L. McNitt and Peggy of Kirkwood, Illinois. Also surviving are two grandchildren; Shanell Lynn Smith of Boca Raton, Florida, Luke Richard McNitt of West Palm Beach, Florida, one brother, Lane McNitt and Peg of Mercer Island, Washington, and Aunt Dorothy Nelson of Monmouth. Dick is preceded in death by his Mother, and a brother Lee.
Services: A memorial service will be at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois followed by the family receiving friends following the service. As Per Dick's request, please omit flowers, and make memorial contributions to either the Melanoma or Breast Cancer Research Funds, or to the Rozetta Baptist Church.

Joseph C. "Joe" McIntire

Joe McIntire, age 37, of Logan, Ohio; formerly of Oquawka, Illinois passed away of natural causes at 11:30 p.m., April 1, 2008, at his home in Logan. born September 27, 1970 in Monmouth, he was the son of Ray and Carole Coover McIntire. He graduated from Union High School in 1988. He then completed an Associates Degree in Computer Technology at Southeastern College in Burlington, Iowa. Survivors include his Parents Ray and Carole of Oquawka, Two Brothers Ray McIntire,Jr. and Amy of Oquawka, and Craig McIntire and Tammy of Blue Springs, Missouri. Maternal Grandmother Betty Coover of Oquawka, Illinois. Three Nieces Hannah and Megan McIntire of Oquawka, and Tori Sowers of Blue Springs, OH. Two Nephews Matthew McIntire of Lenexa, Kansas and Travis Sowers of Brunswick, Missouri; Special Friend Jamey Littleton of Logan, Ohio.
Joe is preceded in death by his Maternal Grandfather, Jr.Coover and his Paternal Grandparents William "Pete" and Alleyne McIntire. Numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins also survive
Services: A gathering of family and friends is planned at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, IL on Friday April 11, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Cremation has been accorded. A memorial fund has been established for W.I.A.R. Western Illinois Animal Rescue

Madeline B. Young

Madeline B. Young, age 86, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 8:17 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the Marigold Nursing Home in Galesburg, Illinois. Madeline was born on September 3, 1921 in Monmouth the daughter of John A. and Olive Larimer Britt.
Madeline attended Hazel Dell School until the age of 8 and she attended Central Junior High School and graduated from Monmouth High School in 1938.
Madeline married Eugene D. Bowers on February 6, 1943 in Washington, D. C. She later married Walter M. Young on Mary 17, 1963 in Galesburg, Illinois
Madeline was a secretary in a number of different capacities, first as legal secretary for
Robert Howard, Attorney at Law in Monmouth, and then for the Civil Service. She then was involved with crippled children, through the University of Illinois. Returning to Monmouth, Madeline for a time was the City Collector for the City of Monmouth and lastly worked for the Army Signal Corp serving at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. She was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving Madeline is her son Eugene D. (Joyce) Bowers, Jr. of Manchester, New Hampshire, and two grandchildren Eugene D. Bowers, III of Manchester, N.H. and Denise Persechino of Port St.Lucie, Florida Two great grandsons Nicholas Persechino and Tyler David Bowers of Manchester, NH and One Great Granddaughter Chelsey Persechino of Port St.Lucie, Florida
She is preceded in death by her parents, and husband.
Services: A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment will be in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth. Her family will receive friends on Tuesday at Turnbull's prior to the service from 9:30am to the hour of service.
A memorial fund is being established for the Alzheimers.

Robert E. "Sam" Tracy

Robert E. "Sam" Tracy, age 71, of Oquawka, Illinois, was found deceased at his residence on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Sam was born January 22, 1937 near Stronghurst, Illinois, the son of Harold H. "Shorty" and Bessie Bradfield Tracy.
Sam was reared in Henderson County and attended local Henderson County schools.
Sam held various jobs throughout his life. He enjoyed his friends and talking to folks.
Surviving are one sister Roxana Lox of Oquawka, and two brothers, Randy Tracy and Kathy of Oquawka and Rex Tracy of Burlington, Iowa. Three nephews and one niece also survive.
Preceding him in death are his parents, one brother and one infant sister.
Services: Cremation has been accorded. No services are planned at this present time.

Dennis Wayne Hammitt

Dennis Wayne Hammitt, age 59, of Monmouth, passed away at 5:12 p.m., April 18, 2008, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. Dennis was born on June 29, 1948, in Webster City, Iowa. He is the son of Darrell D. and Vera J. Bullock Hammitt. He was reared and educated in Moline, Illinois, where he attended Moline public Schools, and graduated from Moline High School in 1966. Dennis married the love of his life, Dorothy VanWinkle on August 6, 1966, in Moline. Dennis and his family moved to the Monmouth area in 1978. He first worked as a farm hand for many years. He then went to work at Equipco in Monmouth for 14 years. Dennis also worked at Farmland Foods for 13 years, as a security guard, and also went to work on the floor. Dennis retired from Farmland in 2004. Dennis was an avid craftsman, he enjoyed building models, and all type of craft work, he enjoyed playing golf, camping, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Monmouth, three sons; Dennis Hammitt of Monmouth, Dave Hammitt and Jennifer of Oquawka, Illinois, and Derick Hammitt of Monmouth. Also surviving is one daughter; Donna Hammitt of Monmouth, and nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
Services: Cremation has been accorded, and no service is being planned at this time.

Rex A. Tracy

Rex A Tracy, age 55, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away at his residence on April 29, 2008. Rex was born on July 1, 1952, in Galesburg, Illinois. He is the son of Harold H. "Shorty" and Bessie Bradfield Tracy. Rex was reared in Henderson County and attended local Henderson County schools, graduating from Union High School. Rex served his country in the United States Army from 1971 to 1974. Rex held various jobs throughout his life. He enjoyed his friends and talking to folks. Surviving are one sister Roxana Lox of Oquawka, and one brothers, Randy Tracy and Kathy of Oquawka. Three nephews and one niece also survive.
Preceding him in death are his parents, two brothers and one infant sister.
Services: Cremation has been accorded. No services are planned at this present time.
Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka is in charge of the arrangements.

James T. Lydic

James T. Lydic, age 90, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 1:20 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2008, at Courtyard Estates in Monmouth. Jim was born on January 5,1918, in Monmouth. the son of Jesse and Viola Bingham Lydic. He was reared in rural Monmouth and Cameron area attending Muddy Corners School.
Jim was a member of the 123rd Field Artillery of the National Guard that was activated to serve in the Philippines during World War II.
Jim married Shirley J. Reimolds on April 23, 1948, in Monmouth. She preceded him death on August 29, 2000.
Jim began farming with the Simpsons on the family farm near Alexis. He also drove a truck for his brothers; Russell and Jess Lydic for a number of years. Jim was then employed at Admiral/Maytag manufacturing for 30 years, until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, playing 4 point pitch, and he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Jim also enjoyed spending time at Strom Center in Monmouth. He was known by all as "The Candyman" giving out hard candies to everyone.
Jim is survived by one daughter Sheryl Gardner (Jim) and one son Tom Lydic both of Monmouth, four grandchildren Shawna Lydic of Alexis, Illinois, Zackary Lydic of Monmouth, Jeff Gardner (Rosemary) of Galesburg and Julie Lung (Steve) of Sanford, North Carolina and eight great grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers Jess Lydic (Betty) of Avon, Illinois, Russell Lydic (Argyle) of Monmouth and Lowell Lydic (Nancy) of Kansas and one sister Harriett Rusk of Galesburg and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services: A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning at Turnbulls. A memorial fund has been established for Strom Center in Monmouth.

Cecil Carter Brett

Cecil Carter Brett, age 90, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at his residence in Galesburg, Illinois on Friday March 21, 2008 at 5:15 pm. Cecil was born on November 4, 1917 in Alberta, Canada, the son of Richard Henry and Margaret May Carter Brett.
He served with the Intelligence Corps of the British Army in India, Burna, Malaya and Hong Kong from 1945 to 1947. Following the war, hee earned his bachelor's degree from the University of British Columbia. His subsequent master's thesis for the University of Washington was entitled "The History of the Burma - Siam Railway: Japanese Rule in Malaysia." He went on to earn his PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. From 1956 through 1959 he was Assistant to the Coordinator of the Thailand Public Administration Program at Indiana University in Bloomington, and from 1959 through 1962 served as Chief Advisor and Visiting Professor in the Institute of Public Administration at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand. He married Jean Moffat of Bloomington, IN on November 21, 1959 in Bangkok. She preceded him in death on October 20, 1999. Cecil came to Monmouth College in 1963 to direct the college's new East Asian Studies Program. He also developed the Great Decisions Program in 1981 - a forum where the public and academic community meets to discuss world affairs. This program is still active today at Monmouth College. He retired from teaching in 1983. In 1986 he was awarded the Royal Decoration of Commander of the Most noble Order of the Crown of Thailand by the Prime Minister of Thailand. Cecil was also a member of the Monmouth Rotary Club and the Gourmet Club. He enjoyed golfing, espionage novels, Standard Poodles, spending time with his family at their cabin in Good Hargor Bay of Lake Michigan, and playing the organ and piano. Surviving are his son Richard Brett and Heather of Lauringburg, North Carolina; and one sister, Mary Smail, of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Services: A memorial service will be held on Monday May 19, 2008 at 11:00 am at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. In lieu of flowers memorial funds for Monmouth College or OSF Hospice in Galesburg, Illinois.

F. Gladys Bricker

F. Gladys Bricker, age 99, of Monmouth, passed away at 8:15 a.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at Roseville Country Manor in Roseville, Illinois. Gladys was born on November 8, 1908 in Olena, Illinois. She is the daughter of George Edwin and Ellen Mahala Black Lant. She was reared and educated in the Stronghurst area, she attended Marstan Grade School, and graduated from Stronghurst High School. She then attended Burlington School of Nursing, and received her RN certification. Gladys married Elbert James Bricker on June 21, 1933 in Alexis, Illinois. He preceded her in April of 1980. Gladys worked at the Burlington Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa, Monmouth Hospital in Monmouth, and the Galesburg Research Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. She was a member of the Home Bureau in Henderson and Hancock Counties. She was a member of the Rozetta Baptist Church and its Woman's Guild. Gladys was always actively interested in her families activities and sporting events. "Aunt Glady" also loved to cook, and was known for her hot rolls.
Surviving Gladys is one daughter, M. Linelle Goff of Monmouth, two sons; William E. Bricker of Monmouth, Alan L. Bricker and Linda of Monmouth, three grandsons; Frederick C. Bossert and Kim of Jacksonville, Florida, Jon M Bricker and Beth of Normal, Illinois, and Jacob Bricker of Monmouth. four granddaughters; Jana L. Bricker of Chicago, Illinois, Mannon L. Bricker of Monmouth, Jessie J. Bricker of Monmouth and Kelsey L. Bricker of Monmouth. Also surviving is one Great Grandson; Noah M. Bricker of Bloomington, Illinois, four nephews, and two nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Her family will be present to receive friends from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening, May 26, 2008 at Turnbulls in Monmouth. Interment will be in Raritan Cemetery. Memorial funds are being established for the Rozetta Baptist Church or the Roseville Country Manor.

Robert K. Snodgrass

Robert K. "Bob" Snodgrass, 83, of Spring Lake, Michigan and formerly of Kirkwood and Monmouth, died February 19, 2008 in Spring Lake, Michigan. Bob was born in Burlington, Iowa on July 18, 1924, the son of Miles and Irene Schick Snodgrass.
He attended Monmouth/Kirkwood schools and graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1943. Bob proudly served his country in the Navy aboard the minesweeper, USS Curlew, as a Motor Machinist. While in the area, Bob was a member of Kirkwood United Presbyterian Church and in Spring Lake was a member of Spring Lake Presbyterian Church. Bob married the love of his life, Catherine Holford on April 25, 1948 in Kirkwood, Illinois. Bob, a Master Mason, never met a stranger. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and especially his many friends at Young's lake.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Catherine; three sons: R. Michael ( Linda Shores) Snodgrass of Spring Lake, Michigan; Richard D. ( Karen) Snodgrass, Sr. of Brandon, Florida; and Ronald P.
(Lynne Christiano) Snodgrass, of St. Joseph, Michigan. Grandchildren are Richard D. ( Mary ) Snodgrass, Jr., Amber Snodgrass, Jesse Michmerhuizen and (Melissa) , Katie Snodgrass, Ashley Christiano, and Nicole Christiano. His Great Grandson survives Richard D. Snodgrass, III. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Services: A Masonic Service followed by Military Honors will be at 11:00 am on Saturday May 24, 2008 at Center Grove Cemetery in Kirkwood, Illinois. A celebration of his life by the family will follow at Young's Lake after the services at 11:00 am. A Memorial fund in his memory is being established and may be sent to Young's Lake, P.O. Box 162 Monmouth, Illinois.

Leslie H. "Sport" Stubbs

Leslie H. "Sport" Stubbs, age 95, formerly of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at Noon at Trinity West in Rock Island, Illinois on May 22, 2008. "Sport" was born September 10, 1912 in Oquawka, Illinois and is the son of John Benjamin and Nancy Raines Stubbs. He attended the "Harmonty" rural school in Henderson County. Leslie was married on June 5, 1937 to Dorothy Kathryn Dillon in Monmouth, Illinois. They first lived in Camby, California where Leslie worked in a logging camp for a number of years. They returned to Oquawka in 1943 and purchased the farm near Oquawka where he has been a Grain and Livestock farmer all of his life in Henderson County. Sport was a charter member of Hendco Hills Country Club and a life member of the Henderson County Farm Bureau. He is currently a member of Rozetta Baptist Church. Leslie has served as an election judge and Tax Assessor in Henderson County. He is an avid Golfer and loved bowling. He liked to shoot pool and was a duck hunter. He also liked trap shooting. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling across the United States and playing Pinochle and cards. He enjoyed dirt track and auto racing and watching "Cardinals" baseball on T.V. Dorothy and Sport also were known to do wall papering for folks around the area.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy Stubbs of Oquawka, one daughter Kathy L. Yadon and Donald of Rock Island, Illinois, one son Jerry Stubbs and Janet of Early, Texas, five grandchildren, Leslie R. Young of Oquawka, Michael Kent Stubbs and Georgia of Silvis, Illinois, Richard James Stubbs and Felicia of Bangs, Texas, Kay Luna and Mark of Taylor Ridge, Illinois and Diana Yadon of Rock Island. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren, one great great grandson and a number of other relatives.
Leslie is preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Sandra K. Smith-Lynch, one grandson, Justin Lee Stubbs, two sisters and two brothers.
Services: A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at the Rozetta Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.prior to the service. A memorial fund is being established for the Rozetta Baptist Church.

Adam V. Davis

Adam V. Davis, age 15, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at his residence. Adam was born in Coral Springs, Florida, on April 2, 1993, the son of Myron V. and Mary Ann Harrison Davis. He was raised in the Adair, Galesburg and Monmouth area. He was currently a freshman at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Monmouth.
Adam enjoyed computers and video games, playing soccer at the YMCA and swimming. He loved to be of service to his friends and loved mentoring young children. Adam was a delivery boy for the Galesburg Register Mail. Adam had given his heart to the Lord.
He is survived by his parents, Myron and Mary Ann Davis of Monmouth, one brother Benjamin Davis, of Monmouth, two aunts Susan Wade of Springfield, and Mollie Pennock and Gordon of West Lafayette, Indiana, three uncles Robert Harrison and Ruth of Industry, Illinois, Murray Davis and Donna of Hickory, North Carolina and Fred Davis of Ocola, Florida. Also surviving are a number of cousins and other relatives.
Preceding Adam in his death are his maternal grandparents Bennie and Billie Harrison of Industry and his paternal grandparents.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the Countryside Bible Church in rural Monmouth. Interment will be in the Monmouth Cemetery. Adam's family will be present to receive friends at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth on Monday, June 2, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A memorial fund is being established for the Cornerstone Christian Academy.
