Mr. Russel T. Downey, 80, formerly of Keithsburg, IL died 2:40 AM Tuesday, October 10, 2000 in Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg IL. Graveside services will be 10 AM Saturday October 14, 2000 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens and a Memorial service at 1:30 PM Saturday October 14, 2000, at Central Congregational Church Galesburg IL. Rev. John D. Carson JR will officiate. Friends may call 6:30-8:00 PM Friday October 13, 2000 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Central Congregational Church or American Diabetes Association. He was born November 14, 1919 in Laura, IL to Thomas Henry and Lena Myrtle (Roberts) Downey. He married Betty J. Lawton in Plymouth, IL on July 9, 1938. She survives. He worked as a Plumber for Thomas Plumbing and Heating for 21 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Central Congregational Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #286 in Plymouth, IL, a member of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union Local #25, and a Charter member of the Keithsburg Boat Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He is survived by two daughters, Diana Dress and Mrs. Tom (Nancy) McCune both of Galesburg IL.; three sisters, Irene McKee, Helen Smallwood, and Eula Mae VanFleet all of Galesburg IL; five grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. His parents preceded him death.

She is survived by her two sons Jeff Seiberlich and Scott Seiberlich both of Galesburg IL, one sister Helen Bradley of Galesburg IL and three grandchildren. Mrs. Iola N. Whitman, 83, of 1519 W. Losey St. Galesburg Il died at 8:20 PM Saturday October 7, 2000 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. She was born September 10, 1917 in Galva, IL to Enoch and Edith (Bohrer) Johnson. She married LeRoy W. Whitman on November 17, 1945 in Galesburg IL. He preceded her in death in 1969. She worked as a secretary in the Advertising Department for Gale Products Out Board Marine Corporation for 26 years, retiring in September 1982. She was a member of the First United Methodist church in Galesburg IL. She is survived by one son Ronald L. Whitman of Johnston IA and one sister Loraine Keeney in Sterling IL. Her husband and parents preceded her in death.

Mr. Wilson Wright Biven,86, of Arvada, CO formerly of Galesburg IL died Monday October 2, 2000 at his home in Arvada, CO. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Tuesday October 10, 2000 in East Linwood Cemetery Galesburg, IL. Rev. Shalom Renner, First Methodist Church-Galesburg,IL, will officiate. There will be no visitation. He was born August 15, 1914 in Galesburg IL to John Wilson and Sara Luanna (Wright) Bivens. He worked for the former Rowe Manufacturing Company, then Admiral Manufacturing Company in Galesburg. He later moved to Denver CO and worked as a machine designer for Atomic Energy Company for 15 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Lions, and the Moose Lodge. He was a member of the National Riflemen. He is preceded in death his parents, one brother and one sister.

She was born on July 4, 1926 in Victoria IL to George D. and Della (Demick) Strom. She married Arthur N. Anderson in Galesburg on January 7, 1946. He preceded her in death on August 18, 1981. She worked as an aide at the Galesburg Mental Health Center for 30 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Wataga IL, the Victoria American Legion Auxiliary and TOPS Illinois 408, Galesburg. She is survived by two sons, George Anderson and Rick Anderson, both of Galesburg, IL; ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Her husband, two brothers and one grandson, Michael Smith, preceded her in death.

Mr. Clyde E. Miller, 85, of 1137 Harrison Street Galesburg, IL, died at 11:45 pm Monday October 2, 2000 at his home. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday October 5, 2000 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. David Seitz, First Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Community Hospices of America or the Shriner's Hospital.
He was born on June 13, 1915 in Sheridan WY to Clyde O. and Ida M. (Kuehl) Miller. He married Laura Clarke in Davenport IA on September 23, 1938. She survives. He was a towerman for the Burlington-Northern Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1979. He was always interested in all sports, gardening and flowers. He was an organizer of one of the first Saturday morning bowling leagues in Galesburg, as well as the railroad league. He had been secretary for both leagues as well as serving as secretary of the city bowling association. He was a member of various Masonic Lodges as well as a member of the El Bon Shrine. He was a member and served as trusttee and Sunday School Superintendent of the First Christian Church, Galesburg. He is survived by his wife, Laura Miller of Galesburg, IL; two daughters, Deanna Lang of Manitou Springs, CO and Kathryn Poland of Galesburg, IL; one son, Richard Miller of Milwaukee, WI; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. One brother and one grandson, Jonathan Eugene Lang, preceded him in death.

Ms. Dola R. Earel, 95, of 120 N. Main St. Wataga, IL, died at 6:30 PM Monday October 2, 2000 at Marigold Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL. Graveside services will be 2:30 PM Thursday October 5, 2000 at Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. She was born on January 5,1905 in East Galesburg IL to Roscoe and Blanche (Moon) Johnson. She graduated from Brown's Business College in Galesburg. She worked as a secretary for Montgomery Elevator Company in Moline. She was a member of First Christian Church in Galesburg. She is survived by one daughter, Darlene Monday of Wataga, IL and one grandson, Richard Munson of Galesburg IL. Two sisters and one nephew preceded her in death.

Mrs. Letha O. Stegall, 90, of 3400 E. Walnut St. Pearland, TX, died at 5:30 am Monday October 2, 2000 at the Windsong Nursing Home, Pearland, TX. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Friday October 6, 2000 in the Henderson Cemetery, Henderson IL. She was born on January 7, 1910 in Williamsfield IL to William and Daisy (Chapman) Aby. She was a seamstress at Gross Galesburg for 41 years, retiring in 1977. She was also of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by one son, Claude Stegall of Pearland, TX, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One sister preceded her in death.

Mrs. Juanita A. Johnson, 82, of 1235 Spruce Avenue Galesburg, IL, died at 8:15 PM Sunday October 1, 2000 at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg, IL. Her funeral will be 10:00 AM Saturday October 7, 2000 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Frederick E. Larner officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Friends may call from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or Community Hospices of America. She was born on November 30, 1917 in Ginridge IL to Elias and Mary (Pruett) Frakes. She married John F. Barnfield . Later she married Phil Johnson in Galesburg on August 8, 1958. He preceded her in death in 1990. She worked at the former Gale Product Division of Outboard Marine Corporation. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Galesburg. She is survived by one son, John Barnfield of Dunedin, FL and two grandchildren. One brother and four sisters preceded her in death.

Mr. John E. 'Wimpy' Hix, 79, of 135 S. Knox St. Oneida, IL, died at 5:20 pm Tuesday September 25, 2000 at 1626 Baird Ave., Galesburg, IL. Graveside memorial services will be 11:00 AM Friday October 6, 2000 at the East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Rev. Joe Patterson, will officiate. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. He was born on November 9, 1920 in Meadville MO to Claude R. and Myrtle (Griffin) Hix. He married Velda Freeman in Burlington IA in October 1938. He worked in maintenance at the Knox County Nursing Home for ten years, retiring in 1985. He is survived by one son, John "Phillip" Hix of Galesburg, IL; one daughter, Ellen Thomas of Galesburg, IL; one brother, Clifford Hix of Towson, AZ; eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Five brothers and 2 sisters preceded him in death.

She married Damon G. Reeves in Murkirk Scotland on November 2, 1946. He preceded her in death on January 29, 1975. She was a housekeeper at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg for 9 years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Galesburg and a volunteer at OSF St. Mary Medical Center. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Marc (Donna) McMahon of Galesburg, IL, Margaret Reeves of Galesburg, IL, Mrs. Eric (Marcia) Reuschling of Booneville, MO, Patricia Swain of Galesburg, IL; one son, John G. Reeves of Galesburg, IL; one brother, William Gilchrist of Kilmarnock, Scotland; one sister, Margaret McCartney of Mulkirk Ayrshire, Scotland; six granddaughters; one grandson and one great-granddaughter. Her husband and two brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. Irene V. Griffith-Peters, 90, of 5625 Live Oak Street West Melbourne, FL, died at 9:24 PM Tuesday September 26, 2000 at Homes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, FL. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday October 3, 2000 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. John D. Carson, Jr., Central Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. She was born on May 31, 1910 in Montpelier ID to Carroll F. and Agnes (Hansen) Banghart. She married Gale D. Griffith in Iowa on May 25, 1932. He preceded her in death on February 10, 1969. She then married A. Harold Peters in Galesburg in June of 1975. He preceded her in death in September of 1985. She taught elementary school in Galesburg at the Grubb School for 20 years and Weston School for 10 years. She was a graduate of Drake University and a member of the Central Congregational Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by two sons, Frederick Griffith of Neenah, WI and Richard Griffith of East Longmeadow, MA; one daughter, Mary Niles of Abingdon, IL; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Both husbands and one sister preceded her in death.

Mr. Earl L. 'Bull' Dawson, 89, of 155 Illinois Avenue Galesburg, IL, died at 5:57 AM Thursday September 28, 2000 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. Graveside services will be at 1:30 PM Monday October 2, 2000 at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Sunday October 1, 2000 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Ralph M. Noble American Legion Honor Guard. He was born on January 5, 1911 in Appleton IL to Ira and Cora (Burch) Dawson. He married Dorothy M. Reed in Galesburg on January 15, 1930. She preceded him in death on December 16, 1991. He was a truck driver for the Burlington Truck Lines for 40 years, retiring in 1971. A graduate of Galesburg High School, he served in the Navy during World War II. He was a life member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 40 and 8. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and the Teamsters Local 15 and 629. One son, Howard Dawson of Galesburg, IL, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchildren, survives him.

Mr. Louis A. Lakis, 73, of 7 Ottawa Trail Galesburg, IL, died at 11:45 pm Tuesday September 26, 2000 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday October 2, 2000 at the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Peoria IL, with Rev. Michael Condos officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Peoria. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Sunday October 1, 2000 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel and from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Monday at the Church. Memorials may be made to the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, the Galesburg Public Schools Foundation, or to a charity of the donor's choice. He was born on November 10, 1926 in Chillicothe IL to Alexander and Badia (Ayoub) Lakis. He married JoAnn Cronin in Ottawa IL on May 27, 1955. She survives. He is also survived two daughters, Julie Fields and Denise Foote, both of Galesburg, IL; one son, Stephen Lakis of Galesburg, IL; one sister, Bernice Edwards of Fayetteville, IL; one brother, Victor Lakis of Peoria, IL and eight grandchildren. He was in the automobile business all his adult life. He sold his first car as a teenager before he went into the Navy. He opened a used car lot in Peoria in 1941. After he sold it to Peoria Motors in 1953, he stayed on as used car manager. He came to Galesburg in 1968 when he bought the Ford dealership, McCrery Motors. The current location for Louis Lakis Ford-Steve Lakis Dodge on West Main at Linwood Road was opened in 1973. In addition to the Galesburg dealership, Mr. Lakis, at one time or another, held interests in a number of other area automobile businesses. In the 1980s, he owned and operated Louis Lakis Lincoln-Mercury in Peoria. He also was a partner at one time in a Keokuk, IA Ford dealership. In addition to his son, Steve, both of Mr. Lakis' sons-in-law are in the automobile retailing business. Bruce Foote owns Bruce Foote Chevrolet-Olds-Cadillac in Monmouth, and Gregg Fields is the general manager of the Galesburg dealership. Mr. Lakis served on the OSF St. Mary Medical Center Areawide Board, the Ford Dealers Council, the Ford Dealers Advertising Fund board, and the Soangetaha Country Club board. He was a member of the Masons, the American Lebanese Society and the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. He was given an honorary membership in the Knox-Lombard 50 Year Club. Julie Fields said her father was often involved "behind-the-scenes'' with community events. "He was involved in a lot of things and did not want the recognition," she said. Denise Foote said her father was involved in many area school projects, including; leading a golf outing that raised more than $18,000 for the Galesburg Public Schools Foundation. He also provided Christmas gifts for underprivileged children, she said.

Mr. Robert G. Johnston, 68, of 170 S. West Street Galesburg, IL, died at 9:25 PM Tuesday November 21, 2000 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. Private family graveside services will be held in Livingston County Memorial Park, Cayuga IL. Memorials may be made to Kingdom Hall - Jehovah's Witness. He was born on July 30, 1932 in Pontiac IL to Joseph R. and Gladys Marie (Malmrose) Johnston. He managed apartments in CO. He was a member of Kingdom Hall - Jehovah Witness. He is survived by friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Anderson of Galesburg, IL and a cousin, Jerome Claudin of Pontiac, IL.

Miss. Melissa J. Christensen, 34, of 403 S. Broad St. Knoxville, IL, died at 4:00 AM Thursday November 23, 2000 at 773 US 150 East, Knoxville, IL. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday November 27, 2000 at the St. Lawrence Parish, South Wilmington, IL with Rev. Robert Maternoski officiating. Friends may call from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Sunday November 26, 2000 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the family to establish an educational fund for the children. She owned and operated the former Scissor and Sun in Galesburg then Melissa's Hair Boutique. Mrs. Janet K. Vilardo, 58, of 888 W. North St. Galesburg, IL, died at 4:12 PM Wednesday November 22, 2000 at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday November 27, 2000 at Covenant Church, Galesburg, with Rev. Thomas Ek officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. She was born on July 31, 1942 in Galesburg to Elmer W. and Phoebe (St. George) Johnson. She married Donnie D. Vilardo in Galesburg on August 23, 1963. He survives. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1960 and Illinois State University in 1964. She was the director and teacher of Pre-School at the Covenant Church for 12 years then a teacher for District 205 for several years, and then Secretary at the Covenant Church for 6 years. She was a member of the Covenant Church, where she was a former Trustee of the church, former member of the Christian Education Board, former Chairman of the Covenant Women, former member of the choir, and a member of the Church Circle. She was a member of the "Card Club", and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She is survived by her husband, Donnie Vilardo of Galesburg, IL; mother, Pheobe Johnson of Galesburg, IL; two sons, Andrew Vilardo of Galesburg, IL and Steven Vilardo of US Army; daughter, Stephanie Vilardo of Galesburg, IL; two brothers, Howard Johnson of Galesburg, IL and Richard Johnson of Dallas, TX and two grandchildren.

Mr. Gary L. 'Turp' Branch, 65, of 325 Knollcrest Rd. Galesburg, IL, died at 9:55 AM Saturday November 18, 2000 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday November 21, 2000 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Pastor Jerry Webb officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. He was born on July 20, 1935 in Iowa City IA to Joe and Eunice (Turpin) Branch. He married Dorothy Peterson in Oklahoma in1959. He then married Marty Gustafson in Galesburg in 1972. She survives. He was a traffic manager at Butler Manufacturing for 30 years, retiring in 1997. A graduate of Fort Madison (IA) High School, he moved to Galesburg in 1965. He served in the US Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Martha Branch of Galesburg, IL; step mother, Marie Branch of Kearney, MO; mother, Eunice Damron; daughter, Christine McNally of Burr Ridge, IL; three sons, Jeff Petersen of Burr Ridge, IL, Brad Peterson of Tampa, FL, and Jeff Roche of Morton, IL; three brothers, Bud Branch of OK, Jake Damron, and John Damron both of AR; five sisters, Carol Cluff of Phoenix, AZ, Wanda McPherson of AR, Nancy Schaefer of Kearney, MO, Judy Smith of KS and Kathy Troll of Springhill, KS; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Mr. William J. Martz, 79, of 801 W. Martin Street Abingdon, IL, died at 7:07 AM Friday November 17, 2000 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL. Graveside services will be 10:30 AM Monday November 20, 2000 at Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, with Rev. Mike Van Acker officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Monday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association. Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 will provide military honors. He was born on July 16, 1921 in Galesburg to George D. and Juanita (Nichols) Martz. He married Irene B. Stockton in Des Moines IA on October 4, 1958. She preceded him in death on January 29, 1970. He was a train dispatcher for the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1984. A graduate of Galesburg High School, he served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2257. He is survived by one stepson, Richard Stockton of Colfax, IA; one sister, Betty Boyd of Prairie City, IL; one brother, George Martz of Oneida, IL and many nieces.

Mr. Mark D. Mathias, 48, of 1045 N. Henderson St., Apt. 8 Galesburg, IL, died at 5:07 AM Tuesday November 14, 2000 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL. Graveside services will be 11:30 AM Friday November 17, 2000 at Abingdon Cemetery with Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Family. He was born on April 18, 1952 in Dennison OH to Edward Stocker and Florence Mathias. Russell and Peggy Lund raised him. He is survived by a companion with whom he shared his life, Patricia Banks of Galesburg, IL; two sisters, Rosalou Decker of Portage IN and Peggy McComb of Gnadenhutten, OH; two brothers, Jerry Frey of Paris, OH and Kenny Frey of Abingdon, IL. His parents and one sister preceded him in death.

Mr. Stephen R. "Skip" Skipton, 68, of 800 N. Market Street Knoxville, IL, died at 8:50 PM Monday November 14, 2000 at Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Thursday November 16, 2000 at East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, with Rev. Ray McLaren officiating. Friends may call from 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Parkinson Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Boulevard, Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY 10305. He was born on March 17, 1932 in Washington IA to Francis R. and Jane (Law) Skipton. A 1951 graduate of Galesburg High School, he was employed by the former Galesburg area telephone companies; Intra State Telephone, Centel and Sprint; for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He also worked for the Floyd LeGrand Service Station for nine years. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 and the Communication Workers of America. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Putman of Peoria, IL and Lori Quick of Abingdon, IL, three granddaughters.
