Arthur H. Koster
STERLING - Arthur H. Koster, 83, of Sterling died Saturday June 5, 2004, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
He farmed West of Sterling for many years, and was a member of St.Paul Lutheran Church in Sterling.
Mr. Koster was born December 30, 1920 in Sterling, the son of Herbert and Anna (Wessels) Koster. He married Dorothy Sloot on March 2, 1956 in Morrison. He enjoyed farming.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy; two sons Steve(Donna) of Sterling; Roger (Linda) of Decatur; one daughter Christine (Jay) Severson of Rochester MN; one sister Helen VonHolten of Toulon; Five grandchildren
Preceeding him in death one Brother in infancy, and a stepmother Frieda Koster.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sterling, with the Reverend Philip Gronbach officiating. Burial is at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 at Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established.

James W. Allen
James W. Allen was born in Dixon, Illinois on October 11, 1918, son of James William and Anna (Pfisterer) Allen.
Jim’s childhood years were spent between Illinois and California. He was a graduate of Community High School (1936), Sterling, Illinois and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Ambrose College (1941), Davenport, Iowa. As a veteran of World War II, he served in the
United States Army Air Corps.
On June 2, 1941, Jim was united in marriage to M. Ruth Gaffey at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sterling, Illinois.
After WW II, he was employed at Northern Illinois Utilities.
During the 1950’s Jim and Ruth Allen owned and operated Allen-Thomas Appliances and the Merchandise Mart.
In 1959, they purchased North End Depot (The Boxcar), a neighborhood tavern. They rebuilt their establishment in 1971 and expanded their operations locally known as North End Liquor until his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Allen was an active member of various community organizations including: St. Mary’s Church, American Legion Post 290, Moose Lodge 726, Knights of Columbus 662 and the Sterling-Rock Falls Elks Lodge 1218.
After his retirement, Jim & Ruth relaxed and enjoyed their time with family and friends between Sterling, Illinois and Ft. Myers, Florida.
His wife (Ruth), one daughter and five sons survive Jim Allen:
Karen A. Peterson (the late Donald), Sterling, Illinois; James (Julie), Wheaton, Illinois; Timothy (Jennie), Middleton, Wisconsin; Thomas, Naperville, Illinois; Richard (Julie), Sugar Grove, Illinois; and
Christopher (Scott), Louisville, Kentucky; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Kay (Fisher) Allen and son-in-law Donald C. Peterson.
Time passes, memories live,
Life ends, the soul continues,
The love of family, the loyalty of friendship,
The gift of giving lasts forever.

MILTON M. SCHOENLEBEN
STERLING - Milton M. Schoenleben, 77, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Genesis East, Davenport. He was employed as a Galvanizer for Northwestern Steel & Wire Company, Sterling, for 36 years prior to retiring in 1986.
Mr. Schoenleben was born June 10, 1926 in Paynesville, MN. The son of Vernon and Susan Schoenleben. He served in the United States Army during World War II in France and Germany, where he awarded the Bronze Star. He married Marcel E. Gilbert on October 14, 1950 in Sterling. She survives. He was a member of Science Ridge Mennonite Church and Golden K Kiwanis Club, Sterling.
Survivors include his wife Marcel; one daughter, Louise (Robert) Lindsay of Poplar Bluff, MO; two granddaughters, Danelle (Ryan) Helmers and Amanda Lindsay, both of Poplar Bluff, MO; one sister, June (Donald) Spaulding of Paynesville, MN; and one brother, Delroy (Caroline) Schoenleben of St. Cloud, MN.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, May 18, 2004 at First Baptist with Reverend John Kermott, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the Science Ridge Mennonite Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church and Science Ridge Mennonite Church.

VIRGIL J. FLOYD
STERLING - Virgil J. Floyd, 83, died Monday, May 10, 2004 at CGH Medical Center. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator by Local 627 for 15 years.
Mr. Floyd was born November 27, 1920 in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Virgil and Grace (Carney) Floyd, Sr. He married Mary Cervelli in 1971 in Chicago. He enjoyed being a drummer in a band.
Survivors include his wife Mary, and a niece, Patricia (Thomas) Johnson of Romeoville.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 14, 2004 at Resurrection Cemetery, Joliet. Entombment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements were completed by the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, IL

ALICE BENDICK
Sterling - Alice Lucille Bendick, 86, died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Bendick was born August 30, 1917 in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Albin and Hilda (Nelson) Johnson. She married Arthur Bendick September 7, 1940 in Duluth, MN. He preceded her in death on September 18, 1993. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, past president and active member of the Republican Women's Club of Whiteside County. She was an active volunteer at Coventry Village and enjoyed sewing and craft work.
Survivors include four sons, Arthur W. Bendick of Sterling, IL, Phillip J. Bendick of Detroit, MI, Robert (Kathy) C. Bendick of Amelia, OH, Gordon L. Bendick of Arlinginton, VA; one daughter, Betsy J. (Michael) Neahring of Evansville; IN, a sister, Bernice (Francis) Haus of Duluth, MN, eight grandchildren, Alexa Russell, Matt Russell, R. Scott Bendick, Karen Bendick, Andrew Bendick, Katie Bendick, Emily Bendick, and Daniel Neahring.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Walter Johnson.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, May 10, 2004 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Reverend Philip Gronbach, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-5 PM, Sunday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.

RUTH A. ROTH
ROCK FALLS - Ruth A. Roth, 77, died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Ruth was born July 9, 1926 in Sterling, the daughter of Edward and Nellie (Grobe) Gohring. She married Carl Roth on February 28, 1948 in Rockford. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1982. She was a member of the West Sterling Mennonite Church and Ladies Missonary Fellowship. She enjoyed rides in the country and good times with loved ones.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Cunningham of Sterling; one son, John Roth of Lyndon one brother, Robert (Joan) Gohring of Bourbannais, and two grandchildren,
She was also preceded in death by one sister Anna Anderson and one brother Lloyd Gohring.
Services will be held at 10 AM, Monday, May 3, 2004 at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Philip Gronbach, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sterling, officiating. Burial will be at the Science Ridge Mennonite Cemetery, Sterling, IL. Visitation will be from 1-4 PM, Sunday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established .

WINIFRED J. WEBB CHAPMAN
STERLING - Winifred J. Webb Chapman, 74, of Sterling, died Tuesday April 27, 2004 at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport, IA. She was employed as a laborer for Sterling Steel Ball for 25 years and then worked at Tyco Corporation.
Winifred was born June 26, 1929 in Rock Falls, the daughter of William Edward and Helen Henrietta (Palmer) Tewell, Sr. She married Harry E. Webb on April 24, 1948 in Dixon. She was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2783 she enjoyed her grandchildren and pets.
Survivors include her husband, Harry; seven daughters, Vicki Howell, Nikki Prater Michal (David) Fisher, Traci (Timothy) Hodgson all of Rock Falls, Becky Owen of Las Vegas, NV, Merry (Daniel) Mennenoh of Galena, Rowena Webb of Sterling; five sons, Ivan Webb, Bradley Webb, Mark (Leslie) Webb, all of Rock Falls, Timothy Webb, Matthew (Rosa Lee) Webb, both of Sterling; a sister, Helen Carey of Sterling; 23 grandchildren, Jamie Howell, Cory Prater, Destry Prater, Nathan Howell, Travis Webb, Cody Mennenoh, Adam Webb, Aaron Stevens, Dakota Webb, Andrew Webb, Alden Stevens, Creedence Porter, Marissa McMullin, Tammy Webb, Shandy Bollman-Wortel, Virginia, Danielle Prater, Devon Mennenoh-Irby, Jennai Basnight, Miranda Renkes, Chelsea Basnight, Jessica Webb, Tanna Webb; two step-grandchildren, Clint Walker, Tabitha Parvin; 18 great grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren and two nieces.
Preceding her in death wer her parents and a brother, William Tewell, Jr.
A memorial has been established to Happy Tails.

RICHARD METCALFE
STERLING - Richard Metcalfe, of Sterling died Friday April 23, 2004 at CGH Medical Center. He retired from Unit 5, Sterling in 1986 as a school teacher and principal.
Mr. Metcalfe was born July 15, 1927 in Canton, the son of Wendell and Louise (Luker) Metcalfe. He graduated from Canton High School in 1945. He served in the United States Navy during WWII from 1945-1946. He married Estella Schnell on September 5, 1948 in Canton. He attended Illinois State University at Normal and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and in 1956 earned a Masters Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. He taught at Lee Center Grade and High School from 1950-1957, at Challand Junior High School from 1957 – 1962 and also served as assistant principal from 1961 – 1962. He was principal at Lincoln School from 1962 – 1969, also at Franklin School from 1968 - 1969 and at Jefferson School from 1969 – 1986.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Sterling, Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society (charter member), United Way Chairman (education division), co-chairman Sterling Sesquicentennial Committee, Sterling-Rock Falls Transportation Committee, Gyros, Illinois Principals Association, and CGH Medical Center Auxiliary.
Survivors include his wife, Estella; two sons, Jeffrey (Laura) Metcalfe of Mesa, AZ and David Metcalfe of Decatur; and two grandsons, Andrew Tronick and Brennan Metcalfe.
He was preceded in death in 2001 by a daughter Carole Tronick..
Funeral Services will be at 10 AM, Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at the Schilling Funeral Home, with the Reverend Ken Zuithoff, pastor of Bethel Reformed Church, officiating. Burial with military rites will be at 2:30 PM, Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery, Canton, IL.Visitation will be from 6-8 PM, Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established to the Sterling Schools Foundation.

CLARENCE LELAND SMITH
STERLING - Clarence Leland Smith, 80, died unexpectedlyFriday, April 23, 2004. He was employed by the former Northwestern Steel & Wire Company in the wire department.
Mr. Smith was born February 25, 1924 in New Bedford. The son of William A. and Kathryn (Tully) Smith. He served in the United States Army during WWII in Europe. He married Faye I. Fitts on November 22 1947 in Rock Falls. She preceded him in death on August 10, 1993. He enjoyed reading and sports. He was a member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Mike (Karen) Smith of Freeport and Douglas (Paulette) Smith of Montgomery, AL; two sisters, Margaret Glassburn of Tampico and Evelyn (John) Egan of Sterling; one brother, Lawrence Smith of Sterling and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn and three brothers, Ivan, William and Ralph.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Rock Falls United Methodist Church with the Reverend Larry Thomson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established.

Magdalena "Lena" Puentes Lerma
Sterling - Magdalena "Lena" Puentes Lerma, 75, 703 West 12th Street, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 at her home. She was employed as a Technician for Dixon Developmental Center.
Mrs. Lerma was born March 8, 1929 in San Benito, TX, Daughter of Leandro G. and Ventura Aguilar Puentes.
Survivors include a daughter, Alma (Ronald) Lilly of Sterling, 2 sons, Arnulfo Rolando of Sterling and Adam Ruben of San Benito, TX, 3 brothers, Narcisco (Irma) Puentes of Sterling, Adan Puentes and Robert (Lucy) Puentes both of Corpus Christi, TX, 2 sisters, Eva Gallegos of Sterling and Vina (Luciano) Suarez of Independance, LA, 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother Mario Puentes and two sisters Solia Olade and Eduvina in infancy.
Services will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday April 26, at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito TX,. Burial will be at the Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito TX. Visitation will be from 2-5 PM, Wednesday, April 21, 2004 and service starting at 5 P.M. at the Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispania Getsemani Church in Sterling, IL, with Reverend Carlos Jimenez officiating.
A Memorial has been established.
