Robert K. Doran

Mr. Robert Kenneth Doran, 86, of Carman, Illinois passed away Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 2:28 A.M. at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

He was born September 25, 1923 in Oakville, Iowa, in his aunt’s house, behind the blacksmith shop, the son of Henry W. and Ann C. (Rold) Doran. On September 12, 1944 he married Jean E. Milligan in Gladstone, Illinois. She preceded him in death on September 25, 2001. Mr. Doran was a 1941 graduate of the Sperry, Iowa highschool. He attended college for one year where he studied agriculture. He served in the Army during World War II. He farmed for 68 years, retiring in 2004. Although retired, he remained active in the operation of his farm. As a young man he farmed his mother’s farm, on highway 99, north of Burlington, Iowa. He also worked at the IAAP, where he drove a bomb truck and was also a school bus driver. In 1954 he moved to Carman where he farmed the Vaughan farm. He also worked at the Champion Sparkplug in Burlington, as well as a live stock inspector for the state of Illinois from 1962-1964. He was a member of the American Legion, and the Carman United Methodist Church. He served as precinct committeeman for Carman for many years and was Carman township supervisor from 1976-1992. Mr. Doran had a great sense of humor and was very witty. In his younger years he enjoyed riding his Harley, driving sporty Chevy cars and going to Las Vegas.

He is survived by three sons Robert C. (Virginia) Doran, Stephen A. Doran of Carman, Thomas E. (Diana) Doran of Carman and one daughter Diana L.(Greg) Isaacson of Carman, eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-grandchild “on the way”, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his special friends Vern Stoller, Senorita and Addie.

He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers, three sisters and his parents.

Services will be held Monday, August 23, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at the Carman United Methodist Church with Kendall Hetrick and Rev. Anita Munden officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Carman cemetery. The family will meet with friends Sunday, from 2-4 P.M. at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, Illinois. A memorial fund has been established for the Carman Community Center, Carman United Methodist Church, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Lloyd A. Douglas

Mr. Lloyd A. Douglas, 88 of rural Dallas City, Illinois passed away Monday, April 5, 2010 at 2:55 A.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

He was born December 26, 1921 in Adrian, Illinois, the son of David and Irma Quivey Douglas. On July 5, 1942 he married Mary M. Rice in Kahoka, Missouri.

Mr. Douglas farmed for many years in Hancock County. At the age of 18 he joined the US Army and served during World War II in the South Pacific. He sold seed corn for Hoblit Seed Company and was district manager for 40 years. He was a member of the Durham United Methodist Church and served as a Lay speaker. He was also a member of the Burnside American Legion Post. He loved to fly, owned his own airplane and had an airstrip at his home. He played sports while in school, pitched on a softball team for 20 years and later coached a semi-pro basketball team. He was a wrestler, while in the service, becoming the Australian Middle-Weight National Wrestling Champion 3 times. He enjoyed following Nascar races. One of his biggest accomplishments was his time spent in tractor pulling. He was a pioneer in the business of tractor pulling in Illinois and was a 2 time state champion. He went on to become the announcer for the Agri-Show Tractor and Truck Pulls, which were held all over the United States.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Peggy (Ray) Derrick of Congress, Arizona, one son Larry (Lois) Douglas of rural Dallas City, 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Guy and Dale Douglas.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Revs. Tom Wright and Bob Wagner officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Durham cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. A memorial has been established for the Durham United Methodist Church or the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

A. Dean Dunn

Mr. A. Dean Dunn, 72, of Pontoosuc, Illinois passed away Monday, April 26, 2010 at 5:59 PM at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

He was born January 27, 1938 in Kewanee, Illinois the son of Elmer and Mattie Grant Dunn. On February 26, 1966 he married Linda S. Kruzan in Canton, Illinois.

Mr. Dunn served in the US Navy from 1957 - 1961. He worked for Caterpillar Co. in Peoria, Illinois for 31 1/2 years, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed fishing, carpenter work, working as a stage hand for his son and stock car racing with his daughter. He was a man of many talents. His greatest joy was his wife, children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Shelly Ann DeSpain of Bradford, Illinois and Deana L. Cramberg of Dallas City, Illinois, 1 son, William R. Dunn of Pontoosuc, 9 grandchildren, Randy Jo, Mollie Dawn, Brittany, Jessica, Tyler, Katasha, Loren, Kensee Jo, and Dawson, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Bruce and Gene Dunn of Kewanee and 1 sister, Terry McCann of McMinville, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 PM Thursday. Military rites will be given by the Dallas City American Legion. Cremation will follow the visitation.

Charles A. Faul Sr.

Mr. Charles A. Faul Sr., 95, of Galesburg, Illinois formerly of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 3:20 P.M. at the Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg.

He was born August 13, 1915 in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Herbert and Effie Markham Faul. On March 16, 1938 he married Alta Ballou in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on September 25, 2001.

Mr. Faul attended school in Good Hope, Illinois and served in the US Navy during World War II. He lived most of his life in Dallas City where he worked as a mechanic for Guy Ollis’ gas station. He later retired from Montgomery Ward in Burlington where he worked as their repairman. After retiring, he started his own small engine repair shop. He was known for being able to repair most anything.

He is survived by one daughter, Patricia Patch of Galesburg, four sons, Herbert “Gene” (Karan) Faul of Fort Madison, Iowa, Charles (Cheryl) Faul Jr., Max (Portia) Faul and Ralph (Paula) Faul all of Dallas City, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Eva Jean Hopkins of Kansas City, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandson, four brothers, three sisters and his parents.

Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. James Clement officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. The family will meet with friends from 1:00 P.M. until time of services on Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Harbor Lights Hospice of Galesburg.

Dennis W. Finch

Dennis William Finch, age 63 of Blandinsville, Illinois died at 1:29 a.m. Tuesday November 16, 2010 in the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born July 30, 1947 in Macomb, Illinois, the son of William and Henrietta Ruhl Finch.

Mr. Finch attended Durham Grade School and LaHarpe High School, graduating in 1965. He then attended Burlington Jr. College for two years and later served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1970. He had lived in Coco Beach, Florida, where he worked as a fisherman on scallop boats. He later returned to Illinois where he worked on the family farm and for the Roquette Elevator in LaHarpe for many years, retiring in 2009. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, dogs and good times shared with family and friends.

Survivors include two brothers- Brad Finch of Phoenix, AZ., Mark (Barb) Finch of LaHarpe, four nephews- Alex Finch and Jason (Carrie) Finch, both of LaHarpe, Scott (Amy) Finch of Huntley, IL., Todd Finch of Lakemoor, IL., one step niece- Kelli Adkisson and one step nephew- Joe Adkisson, both of LaHarpe, and four great nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family is planning a Memorial and Visitation Friday, Dec.10th, 6 - 7:30 PM at the Annex, LaHarpe, IL. A Wake & Party to be held 7:30-12:00 PM (Alcohol permitted - Bring your own). Memorial contributions in memory of Denny may be made to the Denny Finch Memorial.

Henrietta L. Finch

Henrietta Lorraine Finch, 88, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 4:10 P.M. at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born July 4, 1922 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Lorraine and Anna Melvin Ruhl. On January 16, 1946 she married Bill Finch in LaHarpe. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1999.

Henrietta was a lifelong resident of LaHarpe and was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. She worked at the nursing home in LaHarpe for many years and was a member of the LaHarpe Union Church and the Come Join Us Class at the church. She enjoyed calligraphy, using her skills to hand-letter diplomas for the LaHarpe school district. She also enjoyed photography, traveling and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Surviving are 3 sons, Dennis Finch of Blandinsville, Illinois, Brad Finch of Phoenix, Arizona and Mark (Barb) Finch of LaHarpe, 4 grandsons, Jason (Carrie) Finch of LaHarpe, Alex Finch of LaHarpe, Scott (Amy) Finch of Huntley, Illinois and Todd Finch also of Huntley, 2 step-grandchildren, Kelli and Joe Adkisson of LaHarpe and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister and brother-in-law, Anetta and Harold Faul, 1 sister in infancy and her parents.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Union Church or for a charity of the donor’s choice.

Madaline D. Foresman

Mrs. Madaline D. Foresman, 91, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Friday, May 28, 2010 at 7:00 P.M. at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born August 31, 1918 in Eleanor, Illinois, the daughter of Maurice and Nora Burns Lee. On January 10, 1946 she married Charles Ludwig Foresman in Raritan, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 6, 2009.

Madaline worked as a registered nurse at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois and at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa. She then worked for Dr. Martin Carillo for over 20 years at his Dallas City office. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City and the church’s Altar Society, the Dallas City American Legion Auxiliary and the Oak Leaf Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Marcella Coffman of Surprise, Arizona and Margaret Ann Kindig of Burlington, Iowa, four sons, Maurice Foresman of Littleton, Colorado, Charles Foresman of Summerfield, North Carolina, Joseph Foresman of Des Moines, Iowa and John Foresman of Granite Bay, California, a special nephew, Michael Lee of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa who spent a lot of time in the Foresman home, 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, one brother, Paul Lee of Aledo, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery, Dallas City. Friends may call after 4:00 P.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M., followed by visitation with the family until 9:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Sts. Peter and Paul School in Nauvoo, Illinois or the Great River Hospice House.

Jack L. Genck

Jack Lee Genck, 72, of Hamilton, Illinois died at 2:20 a.m. Thursday October 7, 2010 at Lexington Square in Keokuk, Iowa.

He was born March 17, 1938 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Frank and Irene Gross Genck. On March 9, 1960, he married Saundra Smiddy in Canton, Missouri.

Mr. Genck served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958. He had lived in Pontoosuc, Illinois, where he served as mayor, before moving to Hamilton in 1995. He was employed at BTR, (formerly Sheller Globe) for forty years, retiring in 2000. He enjoyed NASCAR, the NFL, working in his shop, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, one son - Jeff (Michelle) Genck of LaHarpe, IL., two daughters - JoAnn (Dave) Van Fleet of LaHarpe, Janet Lee Spencer-Genck of Hamilton, IL., seven grandchildren-Jordan, Jarren, and Lauren Genck, Danielle, Derek, and Allison Van Fleet, and Nathan Spencer, two brothers- Mike Genck of Canton, MO., Bill Genck of Quincy, IL., and one sister - Barb Mason of Dallas City, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother- Bob Genck and one sister - Betty Brooks.

Graveside services with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 12, 2010 in the Harris cemetery, near Dallas City. Rev. Jim Luder will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Mary R. Gilmore

Mrs. Mary R. Gilmore, 83, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Monday, August 2, 2010 at 12 :14 P.M. at the VA Hospital in Marion, Illinois.

She was born May 14, 1927 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Silas and Ella Pearl Perry Allen. She was first married to Jack Philbrick. Later she married Curtis Aycock in Peoria, Illinois. On December 16, 1978 she married Ralph Gilmore in LaHarpe. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1985.

She had worked at the Ideal Troy Cleaners in Peoria and later, King - Seeley in Macomb, Illinois. She enjoyed puzzles, sewing, watching Westerns and her pet bird.

Surviving are one daughter, Betty Young of Burlington, Iowa, one son, Curtis Aycock of Carson City, Nevada, 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, one sister, Dora Gooden of Blandinsville, Illinois, several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and her good friend, Ruthie Sarley of LaHarpe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the LaHarpe cemetery with Dan Dingus officiating. The family will meet with friends on Saturday from noon until 1:45 P.M. at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Ambulance Service and the LaHarpe Fire Department.

Glenn L. Gleason

Mr. Glenn Gleason, 76, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 8:41 A.M. at his home.

He was born November 24, 1933 in LaHarpe, the son of Edgar and Metta Robinson Gleason. On April 4, 2006 he married Virginia Taylor in LaHarpe.

Mr. Gleason was a 1951 graduate of LaHarpe High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the US Air Force from 1953 - 1957. He farmed near LaHarpe for many years and later was a school bus driver for the LaHarpe School District. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion and the Lions Club. He enjoyed watching all sports, but especially his grandson playing football.

Surviving are his wife, one son, Marty (Julie) Gleason of Fairfield, Iowa, one daughter, Kate Biggiam of Wataga, Illinois, three step-children, Larry (Gina) Hanshaw of Pleasant Plain, Iowa, Kim (Gary) Schreffler of Keosauqua, Iowa and Terry Hanshaw of Fairfield, Iowa, six grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Ball, one sister, Annalee Johnson and one brother, Emery Gleason.

The family will meet with friends, Sunday June 6, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Burial will be held at a later date in LaHarpe cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Joshua D. “Goody” Good

Joshua David “Goody” Good, age 21 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 10:00 p.m. Sunday May 30, 2010 at his home. He was born January 10, 1989 in Peoria, Illinois, the son of Shane Good and Wendi Noble.

Josh was employed as a dietary aide at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst. He was a 2008 graduate of West Central High School in Biggsville. He loved to sing, and during junior high and high school, was active in chorus, receiving many first and second ribbons in contests. He was an avid blood donor and enjoyed video games, music, and visiting with his many friends and family.

Survivors include his mother - Wendi Noble of Stronghurst, his father - Shane Good of Lomax, IL., two sisters - Hannah and Caitlin Good of Stronghurst, one brother - Zach Smith of Stronghurst, and his grandparents - Ronnie and Elaine Good of Lomax and George Vaughn of Wapello, IA. He was preceded in death by his grandmother - Bonnie Vaughn, an uncle - Richard Allen Good, and one cousin Kimberley Huppenbauer.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday June 4, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will follow in the Carman cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Nancy L. Greenig

Mrs Nancy L. Greenig, 76, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe, Illinois.

She was born May 28, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Everett Lloyd and Maud Virginia Hammel Howard. On February 12, 1955 she married Merlin Edward Greenig in Portland, Oregon. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1989.

Nancy and her husband traveled the country with the Air Force until his retirement in 1973. They then moved their family to Dallas City and became a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, holding the position of treasurer for many years. She also served as Secretary at the former Lomax Grade School. She loved to garden, work in her lawn and swim in her pool with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Surviving are 3 sons, Stevan Greenig of Fort Madison, Iowa, David (Beth) Greenig of Dallas City and Michael (Lisa) Greenig of Andover, Minnesota, 1 daughter, Linda (Mike) Liebe of Chaska, Minnesota, 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call after 5:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Altar and Rosary Society of her church or for the staff at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Facility.

Esteline Gertrude Stevenson Griffin

Esteline G. Stevenson Griffin, age 99 of Gladstone, Illinois died at 10:10 p.m. Monday January 5, 2010 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born April 3, 1910 in Little York, Illinois, the daughter of Floss and Hazel Rowe Munson. Hazel later married Earl Morris and together, they raised Esteline from an early age.

Esteline was first married to Arthur Stevenson. They divorced. In 1964, she married Hoyt Griffin. He preceded her in death in 1972.

She was a 1928 graduate of Biggsville High School. She had farmed with her husband and grew popcorn for the Burlington theaters, which she attended regularly. She had also worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant and as a nurse’s aide at the former Burlington Hospital for many years. Later she went into private nursing and served as a care giver for several families and relatives. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Henderson County Home Bureau.

Esteline focused her love and attention on her children and their families. She loved traveling, playing cards, flowers and parties. She had a sweet, kind and gentle spirit, and the love and memories shared, will be remembered forever.

Survivors include three daughters- Berniece Pettinger and Angeline Anderson, both of Gladstone, Marie (Crafton) Meeker of Kingston, IA., one son - Samuel (Bernita) Stevenson of Gladstone, two daughters in law - Nancy Stevenson of Gladstone, Kay Stevenson of Oquawka, seventeen grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren, and twelve great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, step-father- Earl Morris, four sons- Robert Louis Stevenson, William Stevenson, Wendell Stevenson, Arthur Stevenson, Jr, and one brother - Willard Munson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 9, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Jeffrey Robbins officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab and the Henderson County Library.
