Connie Lynn Louck

Connie Lynn Louck, age 58 of Biggsville, Illinois died at 5:15 p.m. Friday August 20, 2010 at her mother’s home in Monmouth, Illinois. She was born November 8, 1951 in Monmouth, the daughter of Duane and Carolyn Hendrickson Simpson. On January 9, 1970, she married Joseph Louck in Monmouth.

Connie was a 1969 graduate of Monmouth High School. She had worked as a CNA in Roseville, Illinois and Batavia, Ohio for several years. Later, she was a cafeteria manager and caterer for the 3M Company in Ohio for ten years.

Survivors include her husband, her mother Carolyn Simpson of Monmouth, IL., one daughter - Heather (John) Hernandez of Biggsville, IL., one granddaughter - Brittani Olson of Biggsville, one sister - Sharon Simpson and two brothers - Junior Simpson and Dennis Simpson, all of Monmouth, IL. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.

No visitation in planned. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday August 26, 2010 in the Oquawka cemetery with Rev. Jeff Robbins officiating. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is assisting with arrangements.

Robert L. Mapes

Mr. Robert Lee Mapes, 90, of Carthage, Illinois, formerly of Disco, Illinois passed away Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 1:47 A.M. at the Heritage Home in Carthage.

He was born February 24, 1920 in Carthage, the son of Emory and Willa Wiedmyer Mapes. On January 26, 1947 he married Alice I. Moore in LaHarpe. Illinois.

Mr. Mapes graduated from the Colusa, Illinois High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Force from October 1941 through November 1945. Bob farmed for 7 years, then purchased the Disco Elevator, which he operated for 24 years. Following that he co-owned and operated the True Value Store, with Dean and Carolyn Moore, the Eight Ball Café, with Everett and Sharon Moore and Bob’s Tire Shop, all in LaHarpe. He also was an insurance agent with Carthage Mutual Insurance.

He served on the Hancock County Board for over 37 years, was on the board of the Western Illinois Police Training Unit from 1983 - 2009 and served on the Hancock County Mental Health Board for many years. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post 301 and the Golden Rule Club, all of LaHarpe and the Durham United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, of the Heritage Home in Carthage, one sister, Phyllis (Charles) Vass of Carthage his aunt, Gladys Heagy of Carthage and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Edith Swartz, Ruth Cravens, Mildred Fleming and Betty Welch and his parents.

Services will be held at 10:3A.M. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where Masonic Rites will be held at 6:00 P.M., Monday, followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the LaHarpe Lions Club.

William Anthony "Tony" Markey

William A. “Tony” Markey, age 70 of Dallas City, Illinois died at 8:33 p.m. Tuesday November 16, 2010 at his home. He was born November 20, 1939 in Dallas City, the son of Paul and Grace Byers Markey. On April 28, 1962, he married Priscilla Gooding in Dallas City. She preceded him in death on March 4, 1995. On September 22, 1995, he married Alene Todd.

Tony was employed as a millwright for J.I. Case Company in Burlington for thirty one years, retiring in 1992. In 2000, he and his wife opened “Alene’s Heart Of Gold” quilting store in Dallas City. He was a member of UAW Local 807 in Burlington, Iowa, the Alleman Council of the Knights Of Columbus #1853 of Nauvoo, IL., and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Dallas City. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping, his grandchildren, and helping others.

Survivors include his wife- Alene, three daughters- Joanne (Ron) Brown of Elizabeth City, NC., Jacqueline (Roger) Countryman of Lomax, IL., Christina Markey of Fort Madison, IA., two sons- Paul Markey of Dallas City, Christopher (Muranda) Markey of Anderson, SC., one step son- Dennis (Karen) Dehner of Burlington, IA., three step daughters- Diana (Bob) Ramsden of Grayslake, IL., Donna (Mark) Muhleman and Darlene (Larry) Fox, both of Stronghurst, IL., twenty grandchildren, ten step grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nine step great grandchildren, three sisters - Kathryn (Ed) Symmonds and Dorothy Johnson both of Dallas City, Mary (Jim) Rees of Ferris, IL., three brothers- Lester (Frances) Markey and John (Dolores) Markey, both of Dallas City, IL., Leon (Charlotte) Markey of Belleview, FL., and one sister in law- Patsy Markey of West Burlington, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one son- Gail Markey and two brothers- Frank and Joseph Markey.

The Rosary will be recited at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Tony Trosley. Burial will be in Gittings Mound cemetery, rural Dallas City. Memorials have been established for Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Henderson County Hospice.

James A. McClanahan

Mr. James A. McClanahan, 73, of Fountain Green, Illinois passed away Friday, October 8, 2010 at 11:15 PM in Fountain Green at the home of Richard and Carla Yelton, where he had resided the past few weeks, do to poor health.

He was born September 23, 1937 in Carthage, Illinois, the son of Clarence Newton and Leota Grace Londrie McClanahan.

He worked as an auto mechanic for Leroy Minneman in LaHarpe and for Squires Auto Sales and Salvage in Fountain Green. Earlier in life he sold Kirby Vacuums and received an award for being top salesman.

He is survived by one daughter, Jana Barnes of Spiro, Oklahoma, three sons, Jimmy McClanahan of Monmouth, Illinois, Todd McClanahan and Donnie McClanahan of Burlington, Iowa, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one sister, Mary Klinedinst of LaHarpe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Richard McClanahan, one sister, Dorothy Stinz and one daughter, Kathy Rabenau.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage, Illinois with Robert Tillman officiating. Friends may call at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe on Wednesday between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the McDonough District Hospital Hospice.

Bonnie G. McCord

Bonnie G. McCord age 78 of La Harpe, Ill., formerly of Delavan, Ill, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at 3:28 P.M. atSt. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Ill.

She was born July 11, 1932, in Burnside, Ill., to George and Lena Gail (McCreary) Reynolds.

Bonnie was a 1950 graduate of LaHarpe High School. She was an avid reader of westerns and mystery’s, loved to knit and crochet and do crafts. She retired from the Sharon Elms Health Systems in Peoria in 2006.

She was loved by her family and will be truly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by six children; Cathy Harris (Hugh Poulson) of La Harpe, IL, Jackie Taylor of Delavan, IL, Walter (Cathy) McCord of Morton, IL, John (Darlene) McCord of East Peoria, IL, Jim McCord of Mapleton, IL and Glen(Shirley) of Las Vegas, Nevada; fourteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, four step grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, two step great great grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Estel and George Reynolds, a nephew, Sheldon Reynolds, one grandson and 2 son-in-laws, Mike Harris and Ron Taylor.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Dianne Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the Webster, Illinois cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Thursday, from 9:30 until time of services. Friends may call at the funeral home between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association –– Hancock County Chapter.

Barbara S. McCoy

Mrs. Barbara S. McCoy, 62, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 8:30 A.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

She was born on September 12, 1948 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Floyd and Hilda Worley Todd. On September 19, 1966 she married Donald P. McCoy in Lomax, Illinois.

She worked as a CNA earlier in life at both the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center and the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage, Illinois. She enjoyed crocheting and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, 3 daughters, Shelly Cunningham of Carthage, Illinois, Lori Simmons of Great Bend, Kansas and Dawn Chaney of LaHarpe, 1 son, Brian McCoy of Dallas City, Illinois, 13 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, 5 sisters, Ellen Lowe of Florida, Vera Bozarth of Disco, Illinois, Beverly Johnson of LaHarpe, Debbie Detherage of LaHarpe and Jane Stonger of LaHarpe and 4 brothers, Robert Todd of Disco, Illinois, Ralph Todd of Terre Haute, Illinois, James Todd of Terre Haute, Illinois and Tom Todd of LaHarpe.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 6, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. John Bremer officiating. Burial will be in the Crane cemetery, Lomax, Illinois. There will be no formal family visitation but friends are welcome to stop at the funeral home anytime between 4 and 8PM Sunday.

Jack Clifford McKeown

Jack Clifford McKeown, age 81 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 8:45 p.m. Sunday March 21, 2010 in the Roseville Country Manor in Roseville, Illinois. Earlier, he had resided at Courtyard Estates and Legacy Estates in Monmouth, and at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst. He was born July 19, 1928 in Burlington, Iowa, the only son of Samuel Clifford and Grace A. Simonson McKeown. After his parents divorced, his father moved to Murphysboro, IL, and Jack lived with his mother in Stronghurst until she passed away in 1980.

Jack was a lifelong resident of Stronghurst and graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1946. He often spoke of his senior trip to Chicago. As a young boy, he played trumpet, took piano lessons, tap danced, and played basketball. At the age of 19, he was diagnosed with diabetes. Because of his diagnosis, he was unable to enlist in the military service.

Jack worked in the body shop of the C.E. Neff Company in Stronghurst for a short time, and then was an auto mechanic for Davison Motor Sales in Stronghurst for many years, until his retirement. He loved to play pool and was a member of many pool leagues in the area. His house was full of antiques which he always had a story for. His prize possession was his 1948 Chevy Stylemaster, which he would wash and polish on weekends and proudly drive in the Stronghurst Christmas Parade and take to local car shows .

Jack also enjoyed buying older cars, fixing them up and selling them. He was known as one of the last “shade tree mechanics”. He loved to read newspapers and magazines on his front porch swing, sometimes even sleeping there on a nice summer’s night. He also enjoyed watching kids play and activities at the Stronghurst Park. Jack liked to shop for nice clothes in Burlington, walk or drive through Crapo Park, go to the movies, walk around the mall, attend local auctions, and attend car shows, especially the annual Maple City Street Machines event in Monmouth. His favorite TV shows included mysteries, Johnny Carson, and NASCAR races. He enjoyed spending the holidays with his family, attending his granddaughter’s band concerts and his grandson’s sporting events. One of his favorite things was meeting his friends and neighbors for coffee and good conversation at the Hurry Back Grill in Stronghurst.

Survivors include one daughter - Theresia (David) Pettett of Monmouth, IL., two grandchildren-Christine M. Pettett and Troy F. Pettett, both of Monmouth, his life long special friend and companion- Christa A. Scholz of Monmouth, and a cousin- Connie (Robert) Hill of Biggsville, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother- Ruth McKeown, and various aunts uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday March 26, 2010 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Banks & Beals. Memorials have been established for Roseville Country Manor or the Stronghurst Senior Citizens Center.

Donald Edwin "Pappy" McIntyre

Donald E. “Pappy” McIntyre, 86, of the Olena community, rural Stronghurst, Illinois died at 7:14 p.m. Monday November 29, 2010 in the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born October 26, 1924 near Stronghurst, the son of Ralph and Eva Burrell McIntyre. On December 16, 1956, he married Rena Walton. She preceded him in death on December 9, 2007.

Mr. McIntyre was employed in the maintenance department of the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown for many years. He also farmed near Stronghurst. He had served as custodian of the former Olena Community Church and was a part time custodian for the Southern School District in Stronghurst. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged after his only brother, Dean McIntyre, was killed in action in Korea. He was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church. He loved gardening, his pets, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters - Jean (Blaine) Faudree of Media, IL., Debra (Jerry) Spiker of Stronghurst, four sons - Rodney (Amie) McIntyre and Robert (Barbara) McIntyre, both of Stronghurst, Mark McIntyre of Burlington, IA., Donald McIntyre of Fort Madison, seventeen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and seven great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one son in infancy, and one brother Dean McIntyre.

Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral home in Stronghurst, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. The funeral for Mr. McIntyre will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Banks & Beals with Rev. Steve Minkler officiating. Burial with military rites by the Stronghurst American Legion will follow in the Olena cemetery. The family requests those attending the service to dress casually. A memorial fund has been established for the Great River Hospice House.

Patricia Ann McVey

Patricia Ann McVey, age 70 of rural Little York, Illinois, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday April 20, 2010 at her home. She was born June 10, 1939 in Kewanee, Illinois, the daughter of Howard and Lucile Lisenbee Jones. On November 24, 1956, she married Daniel McVey at the Biggsville Methodist Church.

She was raised in Oquawka and moved to Rozetta in 1949. She attended Liberty Grade school and then graduated from Biggsville High School in 1956.

Pat was a devoted mother of four sons, and a loving grandmother. She enjoyed traveling, searching for Indian artifacts, writing poetry about the Lord's love for us, and spending time with her family, friends, and church family.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel McVey of rural Little York, three sons - Daniel (Cheryl) McVey Jr. of Oquawka, Rodney (Diane) McVey of North Henderson, Illinois, Tim (Theresa) McVey of rural Henderson County, ten grandchildren- Paul McVey, Rachel Wallers, Kalli McVey, Jessica Saldeen, Jennifer McVey, Daniel McVey III, Michael McVey, Samantha McVey, Donovan McVey, and Quinton McVey, one great grandchild- Jacob Wallers, three step grandchildren- Linnea Heller, Candi Ince, and Chris Janey, two brothers - Loren (Shirley) Jones and Michael (Mollie) Jones both of Eugene, Oregon, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son - Eddie McVey, two sisters - Janice Davis and Joan Borevik, and three brothers- Steve, Donald, and Tracy Jones.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday April 29, 2010 in the Faith Bible Church in Oquawka. A memorial fund has been established for the Faith Bible Church.

Michael J. Mealey

Mr. Michael J. Mealey, 56, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 1:22 A.M. at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

He was born on September 20, 1954 in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of I.N. and Joan Kimler Mealey.

Mike was a 1973 graduate of LaHarpe High School. He attended Spoon River College in Canton, Illinois for 2 years and graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb in1977.

He farmed in the LaHarpe area for many years and later worked for the Keokuk Junction Railroad and the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant. He then worked for the Burlington Junction Railroad as a switch foreman/ locomotive engineer at both their Burlington, IA and Quincy, IL locations. For the past 2 years he worked as a traveling locomotive mechanic. He had served on the LaHarpe Fire Department and was a LaHarpe Township Trustee. He was also a member and past Master of the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195. He was an avid golfer and member of the Twin Oaks Golf and Country Club in Blandinsville, Illinois.

He is survived by one son, Blake Mealey of LaHarpe, two sisters, Mary J. (Jim) Yonker of Poplar Grove, Illinois and Leigh Ann (Curt) Gregory of Vernon Hills, Illinois, two nephews, Scott (Amy) Finch of Huntley, Illinois and Todd Finch of Lakemoor, Illinois and three great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 21, 2010 at the LaHarpe Union Church with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Saturday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge or the LaHarpe Fire Department.

Dorla Melton

Dorla Churchill Melton of Duncanville, Texas, devoted wife, beloved mother & Grammy, passed away March 18, 2010. She was born Dec. 22, 1940, in Smithshire, Illinois to Charles & Eleanor (Gibb) Churchill. Retired, Mrs. Melton sold real estate in the area for over 18 years. She was a past member of Texas Association of Realtors and Greater Dallas Board of Realtors and was a graduate of Realtor’’s Institute. Dorla was also very involved in the community as a volunteer for Scottish Rite Hospital, American Heart Association, & the March of Dimes. She had been a member of the Best Southwest Toastmasters Club and American Business Women’’s Association. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, L.R. Melton; children, Teri Lea Nelson of Duncanville, Lori Ann Melton Dahl of Dallas Texas, Bo ““Darin”” Melton & wife, Rachael of Mansfield, Texas, and Doug Melton & wife, Kimberly of Venus, Texas; grandchildren, Joshua Melton, April Melton, Alex Melton, Charles Melton, Ashley Beck, Karissia Jones, Beau Melton, Hannah Nelson, Nigel Nelson, Trevor Nelson & Jace Melton; great grandson, Brayden; brother, Gary McBride of Englewood, Colorado; and sisters, Sherry Markey of Dallas City, Illinois & Sue Chiprez of Burlington, Iowa. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Jaynes Memorial Chapel, in Duncanville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery, LaHarpe, Illinois. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Banks & Beals in Dallas City. A memorial fund has been established for the Scottish Rite Hospital, Dallas Texas.

Merieta L. Merschbrock

Merieta L. Merschbrock, 76, of Paramount, California passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at her home.

She was born April 2, 1934 in Grandview, Iowa, the daughter of Charles H. and Opal L. Kite Pentecost.

She was raised in Fort Madison, Iowa and attended Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa. She lived in California for the past 25 years where she was an instructor at Central Nursing College in Los Angeles.

She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Bowers of Paramount, three sons, Donald Hendrix of Fort Madison, James Day of Paramount and Matt Smith of Edgewood, Texas, 9 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and two sisters, Shirley Neff of Burlington and Wanita Lasserman of Fort Madison.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sons, Neal Hendrix and Chuck Messer.

Graveside services will be held at 11:15 A.M. Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. The family will meet with friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City.

Deanna J. Mershon

Deanna J. Mershon, 66, of Knoxville, Illinois, formerly of LaHarpe, passed away Friday, October 22, 2010 at 8:20 AM at the OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois.

She was born on May 28, 1944 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Clarence and Darthula Carter Petty. On June 1, 1962 she married Larry Mershon. They later divorced.

She was a graduate of LaHarpe High School. She lived most of her life in LaHarpe where she owned and operated the Country Café. She also worked as a CNA at the LaHarpe Davier Health Care Center and was most recently employed at Methode Electronics in Carthage.

She is survived by two sons, Mike Mershon and Murray (Monica) Mershon, all of LaHarpe. Six grandchildren, Tiffany (Bill) Bangel, Kevin (Madison) Mershon, Kelsey Mershon, Nicholas Mershon, Caleb Mershon and Allison Mershon and one sister Isabel Starbuck, of Blandinsville and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, one sister, six half-brothers and three half-sisters.

Services will be held Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Mark Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. The family will meet with friends Tuesday from noon until time of services at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the American Diabetes Association.
