Judith Ann Grisham

Judith Ann Grisham, 58, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Friday, March 28, 2008 at 7:31a.m. at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born June 23, 1949, the daughter of Virgil and Hazel Torrence Worley. She married Charles Edward Grisham on February 17, 1968 in Lomax, Illinois.

Mrs. Grisham was a life long resident of Lomax, Illinois and was a member of the Lomax Nazarene Church.

She is survived by her husband, 2 sons, Brian ( Suzanne) Grisham and Shane ( Tammy) Grisham, both of Lomax, 1 sister, Sally Maynard of Niota, Illinois, 3 brothers, Joseph (Marcia) Worley of Lomax, Nick (JoEllen) Roark of Media, Illinois, and Gene Roark of Lomax, and 4 grandchildren, Samantha, Joshua, Makayla, and Sheldon Grisham.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers, Maurice and Gilbert Worley.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Lomax Nazarene Church with Rev. John Bremer officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Monday, March 31st at the Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois where the family will meet with friends from 6-8pm. A memorial fund has been established.

James R. Harl

Mr. James Riley Harl, 61, of Leland, Illinois passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 8:47 P.M. at the Valley West Hospital in Sandwich, Illinois.

He was born July 26, 1946 in LaHarpe, Illinois the son of Darrell and Wilda Riley Harl.

He was a 1964 graduate of the Nauvoo-Colusa High School and served 9 years in the Army Reserves. He worked as an electrician all of his adult life and was a member of the IBEW Local 13 in Burlington, Iowa. He also farmed near Colusa. He was a member of the Nauvoo, IL Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, and had served on the committee for the Nauvoo Grape Festival.

Surviving are 2 sons, Andrew (Vanessa) Harl of Colusa, IL and Kade (Stacie) Harl of Niota, IL, 2 daughters, Karie (Jeff) Mathena of Macomb, IL and Kelly (Matt) Lemaire of Basco, IL, 2 stepchildren, Erica Carden and Joseph Riley Londrie both of Leland, IL and 3 grandchildren, Colin Lemaire, Karlee Mathena and Keaton Harl. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 7:30 PM Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, IL where a memorial service will be held at 7:30 PM Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Hearts of Hancock County Animal Shelter.

Elsie Louise Hartman

Elsie Louise Hartman, age 79 of Stronghurst died at 10:30 A.M. Friday August 1, 2008 at her home. She was born April 12, 1929 in Hancock County, Illinois, the daughter of Merlin and Mary Markey Foresman. On January 18, 1949, she married Paul Hartman in St. Augustine, IL. He preceded her in death on April 30, 1991.

Elsie attended Cox Grade School and graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1947. She had worked as a secretary, was a Dietary Cook at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst, was Site Manager for the Community Senior Citizens Center in Stronghurst, and was a professional babysitter. She was a past president of the Community Senior Citizens, former 4-H leader and CCD teacher. Her awards included the HEA Family Of The Year in 1987 and was named as a Western Illinois Ageless Achiever in 2005. She was a member of the St Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Altar & Rosary Society, and a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club, and the Gaudy Girls of the Red Hatters Club. She enjoyed family activities, quilting, sewing, playing cards and dominoes.

Survivors include one son - Howard Hartman of Stronghurst, ten daughters - Reva (Loren) Dowell and Linda (Ed) Hernandez, both of Round Rock, TX., Donna (Gary) Powless of Raritan, IL., Paula (Dave) Hise of Eureka, IL., Lea Ann (Ken) Nylin of Lincoln, IL., Rhonda (Allen) Scott of Grundy Center, IA., Anita (Jim) Hawk and Sara (Mark) Lefler, both of Stronghurst, Sandra (Mark) Freitag of Metamora, IL., Mary (Shane) Reed of Smithshire, IL., twenty four grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one on the way, three sisters - Esther Thomas of Roseville, IL., Mary Jane (Roger) Hofland of Bettendorf, IA., Leatha (Joe) Hutson of Donohue, IA., two brothers - Merlin (Janet) Foresman of Oneida, TN., Ronald (Sharon) Foresman of Lombard, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday August 4, 2008 in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church near Raritan with Rev. Ken Hummel as Celebrant. Burial will be in St Patrick’s Church cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst where a Rosary will be recited at 5:00 P.M. Sunday followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 P.M. Memorials have been established for the Stronghurst Community Senior Citizens and St Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Irene Hartman

Irene Anna Hartman, age 96 of Stronghurst, Illinois, formerly of Burlington, Iowa died at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday July 8, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born October 20, 1911 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Anna Warmker Nesta. On June 8, 1930, she married Edjar Allan Hartman in Quincy. He preceded her in death on January 6, 1954.

Mrs Hartman attended schools in Burton, Illinois and received her teaching certificate in Quincy. She lived most of her adult life in Burlington, where she had worked at S.S. Kresge, Camp’s Laundry, and retired from National Research in 1984. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include one daughter - Carol (Max) Cunningham of Lomax, Illinois, eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and twenty two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son - Walter Edward Hartman, one granddaughter, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday July 11, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. James Olsen officiating. Burial will be in the Burton cemetery, Burton, Illinois. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Brian J. Hetrick

Brian James Hetrick, age 29 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 5:24 P.M. Monday August 18, 2008 in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born September 25, 1978 in Burlington, the son of James and Joyce Kuntz Hetrick. On March 11, 2006, he married Julie Russell in Carman, Illinois.

Brian was a 1997 graduate of Union High School in Biggsville, Illinois where he excelled as a student and in sports. He was the first Union student to be named to the Illinois All State Football Team. After High School, he attended Monmouth College in Monmouth where he played football all four years, serving as team co-captain his senior year. He graduated from there in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Currently, he was employed as an operations engineer at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Brian was a well known sprint car racer, and had raced at several area tracks. He was this year’s points leader in the 305 Sprint Division at 34 Raceway, where he had raced for the past ten years. He was an avid sportsman, and loved hunting with his golden retriever, “Daisy”. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife, one brother - Kevin Hetrick of Gladstone, IL., his parents of Gladstone, grandfather - William Hetrick of Carman, and his great grandmother - Polly Hetrick of Carman. He was preceded in death by his great grandfather - Earman Hetrick, and by his grandparents - William and Arlene Kuntz, and Betty Hetrick.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday at the Stronghurst Christian Church with Rev. Frank Beatty officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 1:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials have been established for the Make A Wish Foundation and the West Central High School Sports Programs.

Jeffrey Lynn Hicks

Jeffrey Lynn Hicks, age 53 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 8:30 P.M. Wednesday April 16, 2008 in St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. He was born May 8, 1954 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Wayne and Leah Link Hicks.

Jeff owned and operated "Hicks Sticks" - Custom Pool Cues and Repairs in Stronghurst. He had also worked as a truck driver for Nortrup Petroleum and Stronghurst Grain and Merchandise for several years.

Survivors include his parents, one daughter - Chancey Hicks of LaHarpe, two sons - Seth Hicks of Stronghurst, Caleb Hicks of Terre Haute, Illinois, four grandchildren - Devlin, Corbin and Alan Hicks, Darrin Morgan, two sisters - Julie Hicks and Laura(and Steve) Crawford of Stronghurst, six brothers - Michael (and Sharon) Hicks, and Matt Hicks, both of Stronghurst, Jerry Hicks of Knoxville, IL., Tony Hicks and John (and Julie) Hicks, of Burlington, IA., Chris (and Barb) Hicks of Roseville, IL., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday April 21, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Olena cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Sunday. A memorial fund has been established for the Henderson County Health Department.

K. Wayne Hicks

K. Wayne Hicks, age 75 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 1:15 P.M. Monday November 3, 2008 at his home. He was born July 25, 1933 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Keith and Eula Charter Hicks. On October 2, 1951, He married Leah Link in Burlington.

Mr. Hicks attended Stronghurst Grade School and was Salutatorian of the 1951 graduating class of Terre Haute Illinois High School. Earlier in life he had worked as a milk delivery man and also was a truck driver. Later he wasemployed by J.I. Case Company in Burlington, retiring after twenty plus years of employment. He was an avid pool player, winning many tournaments and trophies. He was a longtime White Sox fan, and was a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Leah, two daughters - Julie Hicks and Laura (Steve) Crawford, both of Stronghurst, six sons - Michael (Sharon) Hicks and Matt Hicks, both of Stronghurst, Tony Hicks and John (Julie) Hicks, both of Burlington, Jerry Hicks of Knoxville, IL., Chris (Barb) Hicks of Roseville, IL., eleven grandchildren, five great grandsons, and one sister - Janet Hickman of Kalamazoo, MI. He was preceded in death by one brother in infancy, and one son - Jeffrey Lynn Hicks.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday November 6, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the Olena cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. Memorials have been established for the Henderson County Health Department and the American Cancer Society.

Nyle G. "Bud" Hosford

Mr. Nyle Guy “Bud” Hosford, 93, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Monday, June 9, 2008 at 7:30 A.M. at the Gilpin Home in Dallas City.

He was born July 17, 1914 in Hamilton, Illinois, the son of Guy Earl and Phoebe Annabelle Durant Hosford. On October 20, 1940 he married Loretta Hathaway. She preceded him in death in 1952. On July 8, 1966 he married Sydney Conwell Vaughn at the Golden Point Church near Hamilton, Illinois.

Mr. Hosford was a graduate of the Hamilton, IL High School and served in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of the Dallas City American Legion and the Dallas City United Methodist Church.

For many years he was an electrician in Hamilton and later was employed at Horner Waldorf, Corp. in Keokuk until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Sydney, one son Robert of Champaign, Illinois, two daughters, Lynn Vaughn Herrera of Yuma, Arizona and Leigh Vaughn Bennett of Delray Beach, Florida, three grandchildren, Wayne, Tommy and Anna Hosford and one sister-in-law, Aline Hosford of Quincy, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and one brother, Oral J. Hosford.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday June 13, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Illinois with Rev. Beckie Laumeier officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Oakwood cemetery in Hamilton. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for the Gilpin Home or the Dallas City Veterans' Memorial.

Lois V. Howd

Mrs. Lois V. Howd, 91, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 at 9:42 P.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

She was born July 1, 1916 in Washington, Illinois, the daughter of Robert Bruce and Lourena Fauber Birkett. On June 18, 1937 she married James A. Howd in Washington, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 18, 1979.

She and her husband lived in Washington, IL from 1937 until moving to LaHarpe in 1946. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the LaHarpe United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She served on the board of the former LaHarpe Hospital. She enjoyed reading, sewing, bowling and golfing.

She is survived by one son, James A. Howd Jr. and his wife Margie of The Villages, Florida, one daughter, Jacqueline Hilton and her husband Bruce of Millersville, Maryland, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Joel and Jerald Howd, two brothers and one sister.

Services will be held at 5:30 P.M. Monday, March 17, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Mark Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. The family will meet with friends, Monday, from 4:30 until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe United Methodist Church.

Carle W. Howell

Mr. Carle W. Howell, 47, of Macomb, Illinois formerly of LaHarpe, Illinois died Monday, December 15, 2008 at his home.

He was born December 17, 1960 in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Richard F. and Beulah M. Carle Howell. On September 12, 1987 he married Kazuko Kusama in LaHarpe.

He was raised in LaHarpe and was a 1979 graduate of LaHarpe High School and received his Bachelors Degree from WIU. He worked as a dispatcher for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department for two years and from 1986 - 1995 for the Illinois State Police in Macomb. He was a member of the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge 195. He loved music and played the trumpet, piano, organ and concertina. While in high school he toured Europe with America’s Youth In Concert. He also sang with the Monmouth College Choir and the Bel Canto Chorale in Burlington, IA.

He is survived by his wife, one sister, Susan (Mark) Schmitz of Quincy, Illinois, two brothers, Richard “Holly” Howell of Dallas City, Illinois and Cary (Melinda) Howell of Rockford, Illinois, one nephew, Richard Howell of Italy and one niece, Clare Schmitz of Quincy. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Masonic rites were held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, followed by a memorial service with Pastor Rick Goettsche officiating. The family met with friends, Saturday, from 1:00 PM until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Carman cemetery with Rick Goettsche officiating.

O. Keith "Skeeter" Hubbard

Mr. O. Keith “Skeeter” Hubbard, 83, of Carthage, Illinois passed away Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 4:15 A.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

He was born November 26, 1925 near Burnside, Illinois, the son of Andrew and Hazel Lane Hubbard. On June 19, 1946 he married Rosena Pence in Dallas City, Illinois.

Mr. Hubbard was a graduate of Colusa High School. He farmed most of his life near Colusa and was a seed corn salesman. He served on the board at the Colusa Bank and the WIEC. He was a member and trustee of the Colusa United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Joyce Hubbard of Springfield, Illinois and Jane Allen of Kewanee, Illinois, two grandsons, Sean and Chris Allen, a close family friend, Kelly Behle, three nephews and five nieces.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Callaway one niece and his parents.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Tony Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call at the funeral home between 3:00 and 8:00 PM Tuesday. The family will meet with friends Wednesday from 9:00 AM until time of services at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Colusa United Methodist Church or the new Memorial Hospital building fund.

Clayton Huss

Clayton C. Huss, age 64 of rural Media, Illinois, died at 6:20 A.M. Wednesday January 9, 2008 at his home. He was born June 22, 1943 in Gladstone, Illinois, the son of Edward Wesley and Helen Hunter Huss. On March 18, 1966, he married Marilyn Magee in Biggsville, Illinois.

Mr. Huss served in the United States Army from 1962 until 1965. He had been employed by the Hudson Oil Company, Admiral Corporation in Galesburg, the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, and retired from Federal Mogul in April of 2007. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, one son - Carl (and Lynn) Huss of Media, one daughter - Penny (and Dale Nielsen) Hunter of New London, Minnesota, eight grandchildren, two brothers - Ed Huss of Burlington, Iowa, Lyle Huss of Lomax, Illinois, and four sisters- Glenola Lee, Gail Furnald and Georgia Kenney, all of Oquawka, Illinois, and Geneva Stewart of West Burlington, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister,

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday January 12, 2008 in the Carman cemetery, Carman, Illinois, with Rev. Mark Baker officiating. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established.

Keith M. Huston

Mr. Keith M. Huston, 92, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 11:25 A.M. at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

He was born June 14, 1915 near Fountain Green, Illinois the son of Kerus and Zola (Barr) Huston. On November 10, 1945 he married Frances Reed in Macomb, Illinois.

Mr. Huston was a graduate of the Fountain Green High School. He farmed for many years and later worked at WIU, retiring in 1980. He and his wife spent many winters in South Texas. He was a member of the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Dianne (Rick) Balmer of LaHarpe and Donna (Wendell) Cunningham of Quincy, Illinois, 3 grandchildren, Jennifer (Tod) Cunningham of Quincy, Julie (Drew) Bequette of Savoy, Illinois and Jenni (Eric) Little of LaHarpe, 7 great-grandchildren, Emma, Gwen and Addy Cunningham, Avery and Caroline Bequette and Logan and Kaden Little, 2 sisters, Roberta Haines of LaHarpe and Dorothy (Gerald) Baker of Quincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Edward Huston in WW II.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Mt. Auburn cemetery in Colchester, Illinois with Charles Ferguson officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the Fountain Green Presbyterian Church or St. Judes Children’s Hospital. There will be no visitation. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, LaHarpe, is in charge of arrangements.
