Albert T. Mennenga
Sterling - Albert T. Mennenga, 86, died Sunday, June 26, 2005 at CGH Medical Center. He was a farmer in the area for 70 years.
Mr. Mennenga was born August 24, 1918 in Morrison, the son of Thieman and Henrietta (Bohlen) Mennenga. He married Verna Belle Peterkin on June 4, 1947 in Sterling. She preceded him in death on January 13, 2001. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Whiteside County Farm Bureau. His farm is a true family farm. He bought it from his parents in his early years and gradually added to it as adjacent parcels became available. The farm has been in the Mennenga family for over 100 years and has been designated as a “Centennial Farm.”
Survivors are three sons, William (Doris) Mennenga of Pomona, NY, James (Anne) Mennenga of Chicago, Jerry Mennenga of Sioux City, IA; one sister, Minnie Gerdes of Princeton; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday, July 1, 2005 at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Joseph Cassady, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be at the Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. Visitation will be 3-5 PM, Thursday, June 30th at Schilling Funeral Home & 10-11 AM, Friday, July 1st, at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sterling.
A memorial has been established to the Messiah Lutheran Church & Christ Lutheran School.

LAMONTE T. BALLARD, MD.
STERLING - LaMonte T. Ballard, MD, of Sterling, died Sunday, June 26, 2005 at his home with his family and loved ones.
LaMonte T. Ballard was born July 16, 1934 in Douglas, Wyoming., the son of Samuel and Mabel Eliza Ballard. He married Sally A. Bickford on May 10, 1956. She preceded him in death on August 12, 1997. He then married Patricia A. Micor Stillwell on January 15, 1999.
LaMonte Ballard graduated from the University of Colorado Medical School in June 1959.He moved to Sterling in 1960 and began a partnership with Peter T. Gray, MD.
Dr. Ballard delivered over 5,000 babies during his career. He loved his wife, family, bicycle and was completely dedicated to patients to the extend that for the past 25 years he did not take a vacation for more than a weekend or four days at a time. He was often recognized, by his peers, as one of the finest rural doctors in Illinois.
LaMonte Ballard served as Captain in the Illinois National Guard in Rock Falls. He was a member of Harvest Time Bible Church in Rock Falls, he was also a active member of the Gideons and spoke frequently around the area on their behalf.
Survivors include one daughter, Kathy (Tony) Craig of Sterling; one son,
LaMonte Ballard of Davis Junction; one step-daughter, Rachelle (Jason) Matthews of Rock Falls; one step-son, Todd Stillwell of Camanche, IA; one sister, Barbara (Frank) Lyons of Wyoming.; two brothers, Samuel (Awanda) Ballard of Douglas, WY and Walter Ballard of Longmont, CO; and seven grandchildren, Alexandria, Olivia, Maria, Amelia, Samuel, Hannah, Jessica, and Luke.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at Harvest Time Bible Church, with Dalmus Meeks, Pastor, and co-officiant Father Paul White, Pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8 PM with the family present from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established in his name.

John F. Nicholas
STERLING - John F. Nicholas, 79, died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Walnut Manor Nursing Home. He was an Engineer for Bell Labs until retiring.
Mr. Nicholas was born July 23, 1925 in Allentown, PA, the Son of Harvey and Frieda Nicholas. He married Diane Barton on June 14, 2000 in Oregon, IL. He was in the US Army during WW II.
Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Harvey Nicholas, Jr. of Norwich, CT, Joseph (Marion) Nicholas of Spring Hill, FL; a sister, Doris (Phil) LoCicero of Norwich, CT; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Services will be held at 11:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Paul White of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling, with military rites. Visitation will be 10-11, Tuesday, June 28 at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established.

Verna F. Hoover
Verna F. Hoover, 97, of Sterling, died Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Coventry Village.
Mrs. Hoover was born July 30, 1907 in Sterling, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Johnson) Fulfs. She married Roy Hoover on April 10, 1930 in the parsonage of the First Lutheran Church of Jordan.
Survivors include several nieces & nephews.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 25, 2005 at Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Woita pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Polo officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling, Illinois. Visitation will be 9-10, Saturday, June 25 at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling, IL.

STEVE R. DORATHY
STERLING — Steve R. Dorathy, 54, died Saturday June 11, 2005 in Costa Rica. He had been employed as a Manufacturer’s Representative for DB Sales.
Mr. Dorathy was born March 17, 1951 in Morrison, the son of Robert and Emma Lou (Cushing) Dorathy. He served in the US Air Force from 1970 to 1972. He married Donna J. Barnett on January 25, 1985 in Lake Tahoe, CA.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Amy Dorathy; a son, R.J. Dorathy, both at home; and a sister, Julie (Michael) Dorathy Oelrich of Santa Rosa Beach, FL.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, June 23, 2005 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Oehlert officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 AM at the church. Arrangements were completed by the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.

Charles R. "Bob" Burris
Sterling - Charles R. "Bob" Burris, 805 A Florence Lane, died Monday June 13, 2005 at his residence. He was employed as a District Engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation, District II in Dixon, IL. He served in World War II with the 88th infantry Division in the Italian Campaign, and earned a Bronze Star.
Mr. Burris was born February 9, 1923 in Springfield, the Son of Charles O. and Caroline (Miller) Burris. He married Carol J. Denkert on June 21, 1947 in Riverton, IL. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion (Morrison), Dixon Elks, and Illinois Association of Highway Engineers.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Richard Burris of Orlando, FL, and Robert Burris of St. James, MO; two daughters, Terry Ann (Fred) LaForce of St. Louis, MO, and Gail Lynn (Melvin) Perrine of Dixon; four grandchildren, Charles LaForce of St. Louis, MO, Rachelle (Chris) Chiodini of Hendersonville, MO, Karina Perrine, and Keihin Ketchum both of Dixon; three great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, two brothers, Richard and Albert Burris, and one grandson, Brian LaForce.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 15, 2005 from 4-7 with a memorial service to begin at 7 p.m. at the Schilling Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held on Friday at Staab Funeral Home in Springfield from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. with burial at 12:00 p.m. in the Camp Butler National Cemetery, in Springfield.

Russell Short
Sterling - Russell Short, 87, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at Coventry Village. He was a Foreman for Wahl Clipper for 36 years until he retired in 1982.
Mr. Short was born July 19, 1917 in Rock Falls, IL, the son of Charles and Hazel (Thomas) Short. He married Violet E. Siex on January 31, 1971 in Rock Falls. She died January 1, 2002. He was in the Army during WW II.
Survivors include a stepson, David (Sharon) Siex of Sterling, step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Neal, William, and Glenn Short and one sister Mary Thomas.
Services will be held at 10 AM, Thursday June 9, 2005 at Schilling Funeral Home, there will be no visitation, with Burial at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling.
A memorial has been established.

Lucia Berzins
Rock Falls - Lucia Berzins, 94, 509 Dixon Avenue, died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Coventry Village. She was employed as an accountant and a housekeeper until she retired.
Lucia was born March 30, 1911 in Latvia, the daughter of Ernest and Elizabeth (Daumbergs) Rezevskis. She married Edvins Berzins on January 16, 1954 in Sterling.
He preceded her in death in 1994. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sterling, and Women's Club. She enjoyed gardening and cooking.
Survivors are a son, Arnold Berzins of Rock Falls, IL, two daughters, Diana (William) McDaniel of Florrisant, MO, Gunta (Robert) Witherell of Mexico, MO; a stepdaughter, Laima Silins of Riga, Latvia.
Preceding her in death was one sister, Zelma Hofer.
Memorial Graveside Services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at Coloma Twp. Cemetery, Rock Falls, with Reverend Mark Oehlert, Pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, officiating. Arrangements were completed by the Schilling Funeral Home.

Josephine B. Evans
Josephine B. Evans, 98, died Sunday, July 23, 2006 at Rock Falls Rehabilitation Center. She was employed at National Manufacturing for 21 years until she retired in 1976.
Mrs. Evans was born March 22, 1908 in N. Vernon, IN, the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Bogner) Zohrlaut. She married Leslie Evans on June 28, 1932 in N. Vernon, IN. He died September 21, 1986. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors are three granddaughters, Patti Evans of Whitehall, MI, Paula (Tom) Schuiteman, Peggy (Harley) Maat, both of Freemont, MI; one grandson, Peter (Ann) Evans of Glen Ellyn; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Henrietta and Mary Hope and three brothers, Al, Carl, and Leo Zohrlaut, and one son, Edward Evans.
Celebration of Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 27, 2006 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend Paul White officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30, Thursday, July 27th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

LEO V. WILSON, JR.
Leo Vernon Wilson, Jr., 43, died peacefully Saturday, July 22, 2006 at CGH Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was employed at Sterling Steel Company for many years.
Leo V. Wilson, Jr. was born August 30, 1962 in Sterling, the son of Leo and Norma (Thomas) Wilson, Sr. He married Kathy Thompson in Sterling. He was a gifted craftsman who enjoyed and excelled at woodworking, and an avid disc golf player with many awards and accomplishments. He was an original thinker and made living an art form. It was impossible for him to be boring. We were lucky enough to have Leo touch our lives. We mourn our loss and envy Heaven’s arrival. He attended Amazing Grace Assembly.
Survivors include his wife Kathy, two sons, Joseph Wilson of Chicago and Jared Wilson of Tampico; his mother, Norma Wilson of Sterling; seven sisters, Glenda (Mike) Gibson and Linda (Dan) Ryan, both of Sterling Kim (Matt) Smith, Trudy (Randy) Gallentine, and Kathy (Gail) Jellerichs, all of Rock Falls, Jeanette Pierce of Naples, FL, and Naomi Capone of Rockford; three brothers, Jody (Cena) Wilson of Oswego, Mark (Marilyn) Wilson of Sterling and Donald Wilson of Milwaukee, WI.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leo V. Wilson Sr., one brother, Jim Wilson and one sister, Marilyn Wilson.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Schilling Funeral Home with Reverend Loren Schlomer of Amazing Grace Assembly, officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM, Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established.

Florence R. Bailey
Florence R. Bailey, 76, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at Coventry Living Center, Sterling. She was employed by Price Motors as a bookkeeper for 25 years.
Mrs. Bailey was born March 16, 1930 in Sterling, the daughter of Eilert and Trientje (Oelrichs) Hippen. She married Robert Bailey June 19, 1949 in Sterling. He died October 2, 2002. She was a member of Faith Family Fellowship, Sterling.
Survivors are three sisters, Amanda Mitchell of Sterling, Shirley (Dale) Magnuson of Walnut, Doris Steward of Dixon; three brothers, Ailt (Sally) Hippen, David (Wanda) Hippen, both of Sterling, and Jack (Veronica) Hippen of Dixon; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 21, 2006 at Schilling Funeral Home with Brian T. Jones, Pastor of Faith Family Fellowship officiating and Jack Prowant co-officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling. Visitation will be 6-8 PM, Thursday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling.
A memorial has been established.
