Alma L. Shipman

Alma L. Shipman, 97, of Webster, Illinois passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 8:35 A.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

She was born December 28, 1910 near Colchester, Illinois, the daughter of Luther and Rosa Knoedler Martin. On June 30, 1930 she married Fred Shipman in LaHarpe, Illinois. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1950.

Mrs. Shipman was a graduate of Western Illinois University where she earned a Masters Degree. She taught in small country schools in Hancock and McDonough Counties from 1927 - 1961. She then taught third grade at the Plymouth, IL Grade School until she moved to the Colchester School District in 1965 where she taught fourth grade and later special education. She retired from full time teaching in 1975 but continued as a substitute teacher for many years. She was a charter member of the Rural Home Missionary Association and was active with the Red Cross. She was a member of the Webster Community Church where she had served as secretary/ treasurer, played piano and taught the Adult Sunday School class from 1948 - 2004

She is survived by 2 daughters, Viola Henson and Carlene (Wilbur) Scheuermann both of Webster, 4 sons, Charles (Ruth) Shipman of Rocky Ford, Colorado, Darrell (Jo) Shipman of Abilene, Texas, Bill (Dixie) Shipman of Webster and Duane (Joan) Shipman of Webster, 1 daughter-in-law, Cordelia Shipman of Springfield, Missouri, 25 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Alleyne Shumate of Fountain Green, Illinois and 1 sister-in-law, Opal Brodie of Hamilton, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 1 son, Gene Shipman, 1 daughter, Rosa Elaine Shipman, 4 grandchildren and 3 brothers, Virgil, Irvin and Vernon Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Webster Community Church with Ron Klassen, Robert Tillman and Charles Shipman officiating. Burial will be in the Webster cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 PM Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Rural Home Missionary Association or the Mission Aviation Fellowship.

Arnold Joseph Siens

Arnold Joseph Siens, age 81 of Burlington, Iowa, died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday July 26, 2008 in the Great River Medical Center Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born November 19, 1926 in rural Carman, Illinois, the son of Daniel and Mary Parkins Siens. On October 18, 1947, he married Margie N. Armel in Burlington.

He attended Crystal Lake and Ellison Valley Grade Schools, and Biggsville and Stronghurst High Schools. In 1945, he was drafted into the United States Army and went to basic training in Camp Fannin, Texas. He served at Fort Sam Houston 4th Army Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas until November 1946. He had worked at Merchant's Wholesale, Burman Motors, Frudeger Bakery and Sweetheart Bakery, the HyVee Stores in Burlington and Fort Madison, and retired in 1987 after twenty years at Warren Radio. He was a member of the Burlington American Legion Post #52, and the Malta Lodge #318 AF & AM of Burlington. He loved his family, 50's and 60's country music, traveling to Branson and Florida, and camping with friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, one brother - Edwin (Sandra) Siens of Carman, several nieces, nephews, cousins, great niecesand great nephews and great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers- Byron and Danny Siens and three sisters - Vera, Mary and Mabel Siens.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday July 30, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Pastor William Deisher officiating. Burial will be in the Carman cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 8:00p.m. Memorials have been established for the Carman United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice of West Burlington, Iowa.

Marguerite Marshall

Marguerite Marshall, age 95 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 12:35 P.M. Tuesday May 27, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst.

She was born May 23, 1913 in Raritan, Illinois the daughter of Roy and Emma Johnson Rankin. On June 11, 1941, she married Charles Henry Marshall in Stronghurst. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1991.

Mrs. Marshall was a lifelong resident of the Stronghurst area. She was a member of the Stronghurst Community Senior Citizens, Henderson County Home Extension, The Order Of The Eastern Star, and the Stronghurst Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one daughter - Mary Kathryn (and Charles) Troxel of Monmouth, IL., one son - Charles (and Laura) Marshall of Stronghurst, and one sister - Dorothy Veech of Stronghurst. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son in infancy - James Robert Marshall, two sisters - Mary Cavins and Eleanor Green, and two brothers - John and George Rankin.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday May 30, 2008 in the Stronghurst cemetery, with Pam Moore officiating. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals in Stronghurst, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Memorials have been established for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab, and the Willing Workers of the Stronghurst Presbyterian Church.

Elizabeth Gilpin McSparen

Elizabeth Gilpin McSparen, 54, of Carthage, IL died Wednesday April 23, 2008 at 3:25 PM at the Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born September 30, 1953 in LaHarpe, the daughter of Leonard and Dorothy Maynard Gilpin.

She enjoyed family cook outs, bingo, puzzles, and her grandchildren. She was also a huge Elvis fan.

She is survived by her parents, Leonard and Dorothy Gilpin of Pontoosuc, IL, two sons, Ricky Grelk, Round Rock, TX, and Jason Grelk, Peoria, IL, one sister, Sherry Brown, Dallas City and three brothers, Russell, Fred, and Lenny Gilpin all of Pontoosuc, six grandchildren and her friend and companion Bob Leasman of Carthage.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday April 28, 2008 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Revs. Larry Menschel and Jim Luder officiating. Burial will be in the Myers cemetery near Pontoosuc. The family will meet with friends Sunday from 3-5 PM at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

Terry D. Mershon

Mr. Terry D. Mershon, 59, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Monday March 24, 2008 at 7:18 PM at the OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.

He was born March 30, 1948 in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Dale and Mabel Phillips Mershon.

After graduating from high school in 1966, he was hired upon the initial start-up of Federal Mogul, later known as NTN Bower, where he retired as a maintenance supervisor after 38 ˝ years. This was known as his second family.

On January 20, 1967 he married Carolyn Jean Long in LaHarpe, she survives. He and his wife lived in LaHarpe or the surrounding area all their lives. He was baptized in the Ft. Green Church. He especially enjoyed all his grandkids’ sporting events and working at the shop with his son and his sidekick, Newton ( the 2nd son, the dog). He also enjoyed camping, working outside, and family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Jean of LaHarpe, one son David (Donna) Mershon of LaHarpe, three daughters, Debbie (Wayne) Corzatt of Dallas City, IL, Diane (Derek) Baker of Burlington, Iowa, Denise (Randy) Trout of LaHarpe, grandchidren, Chris, Craig and Jensen Corzatt, Korey and Kyle Baker, Elyce and Aden Trout, Ryan (Christy) Kienast, and Haylee and Hunter Kienast. Also surviving are one sister, Susie (Jerry) Miller of Carthage, one brother, Larry (Vicki) Mershon of Macomb, 1 aunt and uncle, Dallas and Mary Lou Winters of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and one nephew, Eddie, Wandtke.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the LaHarpe Christian Church, LaHarpe, IL with Darren Beachy officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Friday at the Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, where the family will meet with friends from 7:00-8:30p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Illini West Sports Boosters or Illinois Cancer Care.

Robert J. White

Robert J. White, age 87 of rural Carman, Illinois died at 5:00 A.M. Thursday July 24, 2008 at his home. He was born January 4, 1921 near Lomax, Illinois, the son of Elmer Eugene and Mable E. Rucker White. On March 17, 1948, he married Annabell Rankin in Kirkwood, Illinois.

Mr. White was a 1938 graduate of Stronghurst High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. Following his military service, he returned to the Stronghurst and Carman area, where he farmed all of his life. He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion, Stronghurst Lions Club, and the Stronghurst United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, three sons - David ( and Pam) White and Bill (and Bonna) White, all of Carman, Alan (and Donna) White of Lomax, IL., four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one sister - Reva Peterson of Stronghurst. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers- Lyman, Hollis, and Gordon White.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday July 28, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Chaplain Jim Haneghan officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Terre Haute cemetery, Terre Haute, Illinois. Friends may call after noon on Sunday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. Sunday. Memorials have been established for the Henderson County Health Department and the Stronghurst American Legion.

Pamela J. Wilcox

Pamela J. Wilcox, 62, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Sunday, August 31, 2008 at 6:55 P.M. at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

She was born January 4, 1946 in Burlington, Iowa the daughter of Carmen and Betty Norris Fry. On February 3, 1995 she married Robert Wilcox in Carthage, Illinois.

She was a graduate of the West Burlington High School. She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially cross stitching.

Surviving are her husband, one son, Noel Fry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, one step-daughter, JoAnn (Keith) Belau of Rush City, Minnesota, one step-son, Robert (Andrea) Wilcox, Jr. of Troy, Illinois, four grandchildren, one brother, Bill Fry of Keokuk, Iowa and one sister, Karen (Kenny) Vogelsang of Burlington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by one son, Aaron Fry and her parents.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 5, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Burial will be in Carman cemetery, Carman, Illinois. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M., Thursday. A memorial fund has been established.

John L. Whitaker

Mr. John L. Whitaker, 78, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at 6:02 PM at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

He was born March 15, 1930 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Chester and Ruth King Whitaker. On February 18, 1951 he married Dorothy Shoup in Carthage, Illinois.

Mr. Whitaker was a graduate of LaHarpe High School and served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He farmed near LaHarpe and operated a used car dealership. He was a member of the Blackhawk Auto Restorers Club, Burlington, Iowa and the LaHarpe United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Linda (Ken) Hunerdosse and Judy Johnson all of LaHarpe, 6 grandchildren, one brother, Don Whitaker of Bowen, Illinois, one sister, Shirley Wallace of Corpus Christi, Texas and one foster brother, Leroy Hardy.

He was preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Paul Ryder and one sister, Doris Whitaker.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the LaHarpe United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Pilot Grove cemetery near Burnside, Illinois. Friends may call at the LaHarpe United Methodist Church after 4:00 PM Friday where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe United Methodist Church or the Carthage Memorial Hospital.

Clyde William Wheatley

Clyde William Wheatley, age 69 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 9:00 P.M. Saturday April 26, 2008 at his home. He was born April 6, 1939 in Dallas City, Illinois, the son of Herbert and Minnie Williams Wheatley. On June 30, 1995, he married Madge Johnson Ryan in Stronghurst.

Mr. Wheatley was a U.S. army veteran. He had worked as a farm hand for Dick Peasley Farms near Stronghurst for many years. He was an avid fisherman and a member of the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, his mother- Minnie Wheatley of LaHarpe, three daughters - Lora (and Darrell) Dannon of Sheffield, IA., Luann Smith of Hampton, IA., Jodell Wheatley of Arkansas, four sons - Herbert, Harold, Ricky and Tristan Wheatley, all of Biggsville, IL., three step daughters - Lisa (and Raymond) Heine of Rockwell, IA., Theresa (and Tom) Merlo of Philadelphia, PA., Tina Rogers of Arkansas, five stepsons - Sean (and Sara) Ryan of Stronghurst, Bill Rogers of Iowa, Russell(and Sue) Bransfield of Levittown, NY., Steven (and Lucille) Bransfield of Virginia Beach, VA., David (and Sharon) Bransfield of Commack, NY., twenty eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two sisters - Virginia (and Mike) Palmer of LaHarpe, IL., Rosetta Wheatley of What Cheer, IA., one brother - Gene (and Sharon) Wheatley of Burnside, IL., and one sister in law - Lorraine Peterson. He was preceded in death by his father - two sisters - Joan and Norma, and two brothers - Robert and David.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday April 30, 2008 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Ron Kelly officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the family.

Alvin L. Wall

Mr. Alvin Leon Wall, 64, of Macomb, Illinois passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 11:05 PM at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born April 3, 1944 in Macomb, the son of Alvin Macy and Sadie Belle Hoover Wall. He first married Janet Marie Sutton. They later divorced. On May 14, 2001 he married Robyn Lynn Lindsay.

Mr. Wall served in the US Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1981. He then worked as a prison guard in Florida and later was a driver for Shelton Trucking for 11 years. He moved from Florida to Macomb in 1999. He enjoyed being with his family, and young people, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Robyn, one daughter, Cynthia Wall, two sons, Stephen Wall and Ralph Wall all of Pensacola, Florida, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 5 sisters, Valerie Ann Erven of Milton, Florida, Donna Wilson and Dorothy (Harry) Green of Colchester, Illinois, Sandra Ussery and Janet (Jack) Bundy of Macomb, 3 brothers, Donnie (Dianna) Wall and John (Barbara) Wall of Wayland, Missouri and Gene (Carol) Wall of Macomb and 4 aunts.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Jack Wall.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois. Burial with military rites will be in the McKay cemetery near Burnside, Illinois. The family will meet with friends Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until time of services at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

Haven D. Vaughn

Mr. Haven D. Vaughn, 86, of rural Lomax, Illinois passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at his home.

He was born February 7, 1922 near Lomax, the son of Paul Dean and Helen Pence Vaughn.

On August 2, 1942 he married Betty Myers in Dallas City, Illinois.

Mr. Vaughn graduated from the Dallas City High School in 1940. He farmed all of his life on the farm where he was born and raised. He enjoyed caring for his lawn, hunting, fishing and traveling. He was a member of the Lomax Christian Church.

From the age of 22 to 84, he served on various boards including, Dallas City School Board, was a Dallas City Commissioner, Henderson County Farm Bureau, Henderson County Board of Supervisors, member and director of Hend - Co - Hills, Western Illinois Electric Cooperative in Carthage, IL, Western Illinois Power Cooperative in Jacksonville, IL, Soyland Power Cooperative in Decatur, IL and the Continental Cooperative Services in Harrisburg, PA.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Joyce (Randol) DeSotel of Dallas City, one son, Jeffrey Vaughn of rural Lomax, two grandchildren, Tyler DeSotel and Jill Rigg, five great-grandchildren, Marie and Kate DeSotel and Avery, Ella and Owen Rigg, one brother Donald (Jeanne) Vaughn of rural Lomax, one sister-in-law, Sydney Hosford of Dallas City and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Hubert Vaughn.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Peggy Stott officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Crane cemetery near Lomax. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Henderson County Health Department Hospice.

David C. Van Fleet Sr.

David C. Van Fleet Sr., age 87 of Blandinsville, Illinois, died at 1:50 A.M. Thursday March 27, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst, Illinois. He was born December 8, 1920 in Tennessee, Illinois, the son of George and Myrtle Logan Van Fleet. On December 26, 1940, he married Katharyn Carter in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on October 4, 2006.

Mr. Van Fleet farmed in the Colchester, Tennessee, and Blandinsville areas for many years. He had also worked at the Colchester Stone Company, Blandinsville Elevator, and was an auctioneer for many years.

Survivors include three daughters - Nina (Bill) Fraise of Donnellson, IA., Pat (Robert) Boyer of Blandinsville, Margie (Leon) Solomon of Macomb, IL., two sons - Jack (Pam) Van Fleet of LaHarpe, IL., David (JoAnn) Van Fleet Jr. of Dallas City, Illinois, 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and one sister - Mary Bartley of Macomb. He was preceded in death by his wife, 2 brothers - Frank and Jackie, and by two sisters - Emma Micklick, and Margaret VanBroker.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday March 31, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Larry Menschel and Robert Tillman officiating. Burial will be in the Hutchinson cemetery near Tennessee, IL. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals. Memorials have been established for the Grace Bible Church of Dallas City, and Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab of Stronghurst.

May Viola Trout

Mrs. May Viola Trout, 90, of the Montebello Healthcare Center in Hamilton, Illinois passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 10:10 P.M. at the Healthcare Center.

She was born June 3, 1917 in Wayland, Missouri the daughter of Charles Clifford and Anna May Toops Parsons. On August 17, 1935 she married Lester Caulkins. He passed away December 5, 1950. She married James Allen Trout on December 27, 1961 in Waukegan, Illinois. He passed away January 30, 1983.

Mrs. Trout was a former resident of Galesburg, Knoxville and Avon, Illinois. She was a resident of the Montebello Healthcare Center since 1994. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hamilton.

She is survived by 2 step-sons, Roger J. (Carolyn) Trout of LaHarpe, Illinois and John A. (Judy) Trout of Argyle, Wisconsin, 3 grandchildren, Sherry Calmer, Brenda Caulkins and Joe Caulkins, 3 step-grandchildren, RD Trout, Randy Trout and Joel Trout, 3 great-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren and 2 sisters, Etta Lefler of Warsaw, Illinois and Ona Neal of Keokuk, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, 1 son, James Caulkins, 1 step-son Mike Trout, 3 brothers, Russ, Ira and Robert Parsons and 2 sisters, Annabelle Dunlap and Virginia Martin.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the LaHarpe cemetery with Rev. Tom Wright officiating. The family will meet with friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Saturday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. A memorial fund has been established for the Blessing Hospice of Hancock County.
