Fern E. Todd

Mrs. Fern E. Todd, 83, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 8:45 A.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

She was born October 13, 1924 in Terre Haute, Illinois, the daughter of Jess and Edna Wright Tate. In 1947 she married Chuck Todd. He died May 13, 1984.

Mrs. Todd lived most of her life in Lomax and was a resident of the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center for the past 6 months. She had worked at the Lomax Canning Factory, the Riverview Supper Club and The Grill in Dallas City and the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards and working in her yard.

She is survived by four sons, Sheldon (Sandy) Bennett, Merlin (Nora) Todd, Jack (Dixie) Todd and Danny (Terry) Todd all of Lomax and one daughter, Jan Todd of Lomax, 25 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren and one brother, Jack Tate of Fort Madison, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Rex Bennett, five brothers, Jim, Ivan, Romane, Kenny and Wendell Tate and one sister, Opal Deitch.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at the Lomax Church of the Nazarene with Rev. John Bremer officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute cemetery. There will be no formal family visitation but friends may call at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City between 3:00 and 8:00 PM Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Lomax Ambulance Service or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

James A. Sutton

Mr. James A. Sutton, 61, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 3:30 P.M. at his home.

He was born June 13, 1947 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Gail and Mildred “Topsy” Kemp Sutton. On August 5, 1979 he married Sandra K. (Parsons) Lenix in Dallas City.

Mr. Sutton graduated in 1965 from the Dallas City High School. In 1967 he enlisted in the US Army and served in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He worked at Fox Appliance in Burlington and then worked at J.I. Case Co. in Burlington for 30 years, retiring in 2002. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting and was involved with the Ducks Unlimited. He liked collecting hats and zippo lighters.

He was a lifetime member of the Carthage VFW, member of the Dallas City American Legion Post 0297 and the Ideal Hunting and Fishing Club of Dallas City. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears and enjoyed Nascar.

He is survived by his wife, his mother Mildred “Topsy” Sutton of Lomax, Illinois two sons, Ron (Steph) Knoedler and Jay (Laura) Lenix all of St. Louis, Missouri, three daughters, Rachelle (Mark) Shuler of Hamilton, Illinois, Samantha Ross of Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Jill Sutton of Terre Haute, Illinois, 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, one sister, Sandra (Gene) Schertz of Lomax, Illinois, one brother, Terry (Judy) Sutton of Hamilton, Illinois and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, July 28, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Doug Clark officiating. Burial, with Military Rites, will be in the McConnell cemetery near Fountain Green, Illinois. There will be no formal family visitation, but friends may call at the funeral home Sunday between 3:00 and 6:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Veterans Memorial.

Loren Gene Stephenson

Mr. Loren Gene Stephenson, 49, of Pontoosuc, Illinois passed away at 8:45 AM Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at his home.

He was born October 5, 1958 in Colorado Springs, CO, the son of Virgil W. and Lovie B. Sanders Stephenson. On November 29, 1986 he married Dawn Fiday in Colorado Springs.

Gene was raised in Colorado Springs where he graduated from Doherty High School in 1976.

He moved to Pontoosuc 16 years ago. He worked as a Rural Letter Carrier from 1985 to the present, first in Colorado and then in West Point, Iowa. He served as an elder at the First Christian Church in Dallas City and currently at the River of Life Church, Dallas City. He enjoyed playing guitar, riding his motorcycle and studying about the Lord.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Valerie and Audra Stephenson, both at home, his father and step-mother, Virgil and Joan Stephenson of Little Rock, AR, his mother, Lovie Lewis of Colorado Springs, two brothers, Vann (Patty) Sanders of Castle Rock, Washington and Bruce (Susan) Stephenson of Divide, Colorado and his mother-in-law, Marilyn Fiday of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lauren Stephenson and his grandparents.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Doug Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. The family will meet with friends Saturday, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

Marie Anna Snelson

Marie Anna Snelson, 84, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away at 2:10 A.M. Monday, May 26, 2008 in the Countryview Care Center in Macomb, IL.

She was born January 2, 1924 in Meppen, Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Mary Menst Bick. On October 15, 1940 she married Willard D. Snelson in Bowling Green, Missouri. He preceded her in death in July 1992.

She worked as a nurses aid, school cook, and cleaned houses. She and her husband owned and operated a restaurant in Hardin, Illinois.

She is survived by 1 daughter, Bonnie (John) Ribardi of Morgan City, Louisiana, 3 sons, Jake (Mary) Snelson of LaHarpe, Illinois, William (Ruth) Snelson of Patterson, Louisiana and James (Norma) Snelson of Harvel, Illinois. 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 1 step grandson, 1 great great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband her parents, and 2 grandsons, 1 great granddaughter, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Larry Menschel officiating. Burial will be in the Laharpe Cemtery. Friends may call Thursday at the funeral home from 9:00 A.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Countryview Care Center.

Ronald C. Smith

Mr. Ronald C. Smith, 61, of Webster, Illinois passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 8:20 A.M. at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. .

He was born July 31, 1947 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Clyde “Junior” and Betty Hasten Smith. On July 31, 1966 he married Joy H. Casley in Webster.

Earlier in life he worked for Bouseman Auto Supply in Fountain Green and later went to work for Bob Tillman at his farm in Webster, where he worked for over 30 years. He also owned and operated Plants For Less Greenhouse in Webster for 30 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He loved working in the greenhouses and teaching his grandchildren how to work the soil and plant the flowers. He enjoyed time spent with family and playing cards. He was a founding member of the Fountain Green Fire Station where he served as a volunteer fireman for 36 years. He was a member and Deacon of the Webster Community Church.

He is survived by his wife, his mother Betty Smith of Webster, 2 sons, Leroy (Lisa) Smith of Colchester, Illinois and Billy (Christina) Smith of Carthage, Illinois, 2 daughters, Rhonda (Clarence) Jarboe of Webster and Verna (Andy) Watkins of Bowen, Illinois, 7 grandchildren, Samantha Jarboe, C.J. Jarboe, Ray Golden, Christinia and Tony Watkins and Zacharia and Riley Smith, 2 great-granddaughters, Tabatha Heitmeier and Paige Jarboe, 3 brothers, Dennis (Jackie) Smith of Pennsylvania and Gary (Jan) Smith and Terry Smith of Blandinsville, Illinois, 5 sisters, Kathy (Mike) Peters of rural Carthage, Mary (Kent) Ussery of Tennessee, Illinois, Hollie (Steve) Wilhelm of Dallas City, Illinois, Goldie Yarbrough of Webster and Brenda (Keith) Bruns of rural Basco, Illinois, 1 aunt, Mary (Lyle) Bradenstetter of Burlington, Iowa, 1 uncle, Loren Smith of Michigan, several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Webster Community Church with Robert Tillman officiating. Burial will be in the Webster cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Fountain Green Fire Department. Banks & Beals Funeral Home, LaHarpe is assisting with arrangements.

Jack H. Sharpe

Mr. Jack Huston Sharpe, 91, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 1:15 A.M. at his home.

He was born August 21, 1916 in Macomb IL to Skyles MCCulloch (Mac) Sharpe and Idelle Huston Sharpe. His father passed away when he was 4 years of age. Jack married Marybelle Bradshaw on October 28, 1938 in Ft. Madison Iowa by minister Dr. S. P. Telford. Jack grew up in Macomb, graduating from Macomb Western Academy in 1934. He was interested obsessively in agriculture and was promptly launched into his chosen field. He took up residence three years prior to marriage with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D.K Sharpe, the same house where he and Marybelle have resided since 1962. He established himself in farming just West of La Harpe city limits, where his only son Ted and family now reside. After retiring from farming, Jack worked for Biz Miller at the Stronghurst grocery store, WIU food services, and farming with nephew Randy Sharpe. He was an avid democrat serving as Mayor of La Harpe for two terms. Jack and Marybelle were co-owners and operators of the Kay-Belle Pony Farm during the 50’s and 60’s having registered Shetland ponies and a grand champion they were so proud of. Jack was an animal lover, always having several dogs as house pets, and even bought a squirrel monkey (for the kids). He loved his garden. He and Marybelle canned and preserved food for years, up until a year ago. He also mowed lawns for LaHarper’s including the city park while 70 years of age until he was 85. Jack, along with Marybelle, was a national weather observer for La Harpe for 50 years, finally passing that responsibility on to his son, Ted. He loved his work, gardening, politics, and especially his family!

Jack is survived by his wife and four children; Jodelle Hallowell of rural Dallas City, Jacqueline (Gary) Eddington; Claudia (Charles) Apt; and Ted (Terri) Sharpe all of La Harpe.

Also surviving are eleven grandchildren; Scott Hallowell, Jamie Hallowell, Kelly Eddington, Ryan (Shanna) Eddington, Emily (Tyler) Dihle, Josie (John) Earle, Molly (Todd) Porter, Jason Apt, Melanie Lesson, Jack Sharpe, and Tyler Sharpe, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jack and Marybelle also raised their nephew Dennis Sharpe for three years following his mother’s death in childbirth and while his father was serving in the army.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, one brother; Bob Sharpe, one sister; Kay Dively, Son-in- Law Don Hallowell, Nephew; Dennis Sharpe, and Niece Carolyn Cobb.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at the LaHarpe cemetery with John Earle officiating. Friends may call between 2 and 8 P.M. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the City of La Harpe.

Estella Mae Scott

Estella Mae Scott, age 80 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday June 17, 2008 at her home. She was born September 8, 1927 in Macon, Missouri, the daughter of Logan and Mildred Treaster Haynes. On January 14, 1967, she married LaHoyt Scott in Macon. He preceded her in death on March 21, 2006.

Mrs Scott worked at the Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa, retiring in 1982. After her retirement, she worked in Stronghurst as a baby sitter and house cleaner. She attended the Stronghurst Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter - Helen (and Thomas Murphy) Wulgaert of Rock Island, IL., one son - Donald (and Twyla) Via of Macon, Mo., four step sons- Ronald Scott of Burlington, IA., Randy Scott of Muscatine, IA., Donald Scott of Gladstone, IL., Daniel Scott of Port Aransas, TX., 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, one sister - Wanda Lusby and one brother - Lloyd Haynes, both of Kansas City, MO. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son- Robert “Bobby’ Via Jr., one step daughter - Laura Sue Weaver, and one brother - Carl Haynes.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday June 21, 2008 in the Stronghurst Christian Church with Rev. Ron Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Stronghurst cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 unitl 8:00 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. A memorial fund has been established for the family.

Anna V. Riney

Anna V. Riney, age 86 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 4:50 A.M. Wednesday September 10, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. She was born February 23, 1922 in Mediapolis, Iowa, the daughter of Cleve and Amy Watson Pugh. On July 3, 1943, she married James L. Riney in St. Patrick, Missouri. He preceded her in death on December 29, 1988.

Mrs. Riney had worked in the housekeeping department of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa for several years.

Survivors include one son - Stephen Riney of Carthage, Illinois, two daughters - Amy (Jens) Notestein of Stronghurst, IL., Mary Ann (Ron) Martens of Warsaw, IL., nine grandchildren, one step grandson, eleven great grandchildren, and one brother - John (Marg) Pugh of Clarinda, Iowa. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers - “Zen”, Jim, and Vern Pugh and four sisters - Opal Troll, Lois Warth, Midgey Pugh, and Esther Nelson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday September 13, 2008 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Ron Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick cemetery, St. Patrick, Missouri. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until time of services. A memorial fund had been established for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst.

Clifford E. Rich

Mr. Clifford E. Rich, 75, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 2:50 AM at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Illinois.

He was born June 11, 1932 in Ft. Green township, the son of Roy and Alma Yetter Rich. On January 24, 1954 he married Virginia Rodeffer in Disco, IL.

Mr. Rich attended grade school in Ft. Green, graduated from LaHarpe High School, and attended Western Illinois University. He farmed in the Ft. Green area for 35 years. He loved antiques and operated the Bargain Barn in LaHarpe for 15 years. Mr. Rich was active in politics, having served as a Republican Precinct Committeeman, , chairman of the County Board of Supervisors, and had served on the LaHarpe School Board. He was a member of Shriners of Springfield, IL and a 55 year member of the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge 195. He and Steve Blue were instrumental in starting the Tri States Micro Mini Tractor Pulls in this area.He was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church. Mr. Rich loved his family and was an avid supporter of local sports and the Cardinals.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, 4 daughters, Debora (Greg) Wisslead of LaHarpe, Delinda (John) Lucas of Bloomingdale, IL, Deanna Stambaugh of LaHarpe,
and Carol (Jim) Darnell of Quincy, IL, one sister, Margie Zimmerman of Macomb, IL, and 7 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Mary Denise Rich, and one brother, James Rich.

Services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the LaHarpe Christian Church, LaHarpe, IL with Darren Beachy officiating. Masonic Rites will be conducted by the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge. The family will meet with friends prior to the service from1:30 until 3:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established forthe LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195, the LaHarpe Christian Church or the LaHarpe Summer Ball Program.

Wayne A. Rettig

Wayne A. Rettig, 66, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 10:03 P.M. at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

He was born July 31, 1941 in Lomax, Illinois, the son of James and Della M. Logan Rettig. On November 15, 1963 he married Linda Marsden in Dallas City.

He was raised in Lomax and graduated from the Dallas City High School in 1959. He and his wife owned and operated Rettig’s Furniture Store in Dallas City from 1967 until 2006. Mr. Rettig served on the Dallas City Fire Department for 33 years; 1974 - 2007. He enjoyed raising miniature horses.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Janelle Rettig and her partner Robin Butler of Iowa City, Iowa, two brothers, Ralph Rettig of Augusta, Iowa and Gary Rettig of Laurinburg, North Carolina and his faithful four-legged companion, Molly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marilyn Rettig and two brothers, Merlin and James Rettig.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. John Bremer officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. Friends may call between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends on Thursday from noon until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Fire Department..

James Edward Patton

James Edward Patton, age 56 of Warsaw, Illinois, died at 2:29 P.M. Tuesday December 9, 2008 in the Carthage Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

He was born July 17, 1952 in Warren County, Illinois and was adopted by Robert and Hermena Jones Patton. On November 27, 1982, he married Sally May Vass in Colusa, Illinois.

He had worked for the State of Illinois Mental Health Department, and later worked as a nurse’s aid in the social services and activities department at the Montebello Manor Nursing Home in Hamilton for sixteen years, before failing health forced his early retirement. He was an avid Cub’s Fan and loved to care for his farm animals. He was a member of the Colusa United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sally, several brothers and sisters, including his foster brother - James (and Dee) Lipe of Galesburg, Illinois, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother - David Strange.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday December 13, 2008 in the Colusa United Methodist Church with Carl Vass and Verla Custer officiating. Burial will be in the Byler cemetery. Friends may call afer 3:00 P.M. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Colusa United Methodist Church.

Richard Irvin Oge

Richard I. Oge, age 86 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 11:55 P.M. Thursday July 10, 2008 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. He was born February 20, 1922 in New London, Iowa, the son of Henry and Blanche Marshall Oge. On November 22, 1962, he married Pauline Strand.

Mr Oge was a graduate of New London High School. Following high school, he worked in the C.C. Camps, and later enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served from 1941 until 1961. After his retirement from the Navy, he had worked at Sylvania Corporation, and later worked as an inspector for General Electric Company in Burlington for 26 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion, the New London VFW, and the Bethel Lutheran Church of Stronghurst, where he had served on the Board and was custodian for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter - Paula (Steve) Haight of Cedar Rapids, IA., and three grandchildren - Ashley, Nicholas and Gunner Haight. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers- Melvin, Edward, Donald, Virden, and Lloyd Oge, and by two sisters - Elizabeth Oge and Idella Landes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday July 14, 2008 in the Bethel Lutheran Church of Stronghurst with Rev. James Olsen officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Stronghurst cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Sunday. Memorials have been established for the Bethel Lutheran Church and Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab.
