Cody Allen Bundy

Cody Allen Bundy, 1 day old son of Jeremy and Erin Bundy of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 9:40 A.M. at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. He was born April 3, 2009 in Peoria.

He is survived by his parents and 2 brothers, Peyton and Bryson Bundy both at home, grandparents, Medardus and Tawnya Bundy of LaHarpe and Greg and Lori Sivill of Macomb, Illinois, great-grandparents, Larry and Donna McCarty of Cornville, Arizona, Theresia Bundy of LaHarpe and Ruth Patterson of Alton, Missouri and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. A memorial fund has been established.

Catherine "Katy" Burk

Catherine “Katy” Burk, 94, of the Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri, formerly of Dallas City, Illinois died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 8:35 AM at the nursing home. She was born January 12, 1915 in Knox County, MO., the daughter of Harve and Sylvia Runquist Arment. On October 29, 1939, she married William H. “Bill” Burk in Edina, MO. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1994.

Mrs. Burk worked in Chicago for several years, moved to Niota, IL., in 1961. She then moved to Dallas City in 1969, where she resided until moving to the Knox County Nursing Home in 2004. She was a member of the Dallas City Senior Citizens and the Order Of The Eastern Star. She enjoyed making quilts crafts, and was an avid card player. She was a very outgoing person and enjoyed life.

Survivors include one sister in-law - Trella Arment of San Simon, AZ., eleven nieces and nephews - Sidney “Sonny” (Deb) Arment Jr., of Potosi, MO., Mary Ann (Gary) Yoakum of Edina, MO., David (Beverly) Arment of Edina, MO., Dean (Donna) Cunningham of Krikwood, IL., Gary (Carol) Cunningham of Aledo, IL., Rex (Terry) Cunningham of East Alton, IL., Betty Schaper of Farmington, MO., Jean Hank of Seaton, IL., Gordon (Dorothy) Cooper of Aledo, IL., Dorothy (Glen) Bennett of Aledo, IL., Patricia (Dick) McPheron of Phoenix, AZ., several great and great-great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers - Santford Arment and his wife Geraldine, and Sidney Arment.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 13, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Alan Davidson officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Friday from noon until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Dallas City Senior Citizens or the Lomax Ambulance Service.

Helen B. Cain

Mrs. Helen B. Cain, 99, of Urbandale, Iowa, formerly of Niota, Illinois passed away Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Senior Suites in Urbandale.

She was born September 24, 1910 in Powellton, Illinois, the daughter of Albert Ray and Georgia Cordell Miller. On August 1, 1931 she married Leonard S. “Bud” Cain in Carthage, Illinois. He preceded her in death on February 1, 2001.

Mrs. Cain was a graduate of the Colusa, Illinois High School. She and her husband farmed in Pontoosuc Township for many years. She was a member of the Appanoose-Faith Presbyterian Church, Niota, Illinois where she served as church organist for many years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Grace Chapter #67 in Carthage, Illinois.

Surviving are two sons, John Robert Cain of Peoria, Illinois and Charles William Cain of Thibodaux, Louisiana, two daughters, Sarah Jane Hoenig and Cynthia Jane Cain both of Urbandale, 10 grandchildren, 4 step-grand children, 22 great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Alice Belle Ruschill and one brother, Albert Miller.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 12, 2009 at the Appanoose-Faith Presbyterian Church, near Niota, Illinois with Ron Leonard officiating. Burial will be in the Myers cemetery near Niota. Eastern Star Rites will be held at 5:00 P.M. Sunday, October 11th at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City followed by visitation with the family until 7:00P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Appanoose - Faith Presbyterian Church.

H. Lee Carlson

H. Lee Carlson, age 94 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 8:15 A.M. Tuesday June 9, 2009 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. He was born May 15, 1915 near Stronghurst, the son of Herman and Alma Lekander Carlson. On August 12, 1951, he married Peggy Mae Kelsey in Stronghurst. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2000.

Mr. Carlson farmed all of his life near Stronghurst. He had served as a 4-H leader for many years, and also was chairman of the Henderson County Housing Authority for several years. He was an active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst.

Survivors include one daughter - Ila (“Shorty”) Shiflett of Fayette, MO., one niece - Linda Cooper of Glasgow, MO., two great nephews - Scott (Tanya) Cooper, Richard Cooper, one great niece - Tanya (Eric) Monnig, three great great nephews, Tucker, Kason, and Lucas Cooper, one great great niece - Karlie Monnig, and one great great nephew due in September of 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother - Volney Carlson, one sister - Edna Johnson, one nephew and one great great niece.

Friends may call after 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. Private graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday June 12, 2009 in the Stronghurst cemetery. A public Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst with Rev. James Olsen officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab and the Bethel Lutheran Church.

Donald R. Carnes

Donald Richard Carnes, age 80 of rural Media, Illinois died at 4:30 P.M. Wednesday April 1, 2009 at his home. He was born September 3, 1928 near Media, the son of James M. and Leona V. Littrel Carnes. On January 18, 1956, he married Jane Feikert in Stronghurst.

Mr. Carnes was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He farmed all of his life and also operated a lawnmower repair business for several years. He was active with the Boy Scouts Troop 5 of Stronghurst, and was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion Post #765, Stronghurst Lions Club, and the Stronghurst Christian Church. He was an avid bowler, and had bowled in the Henderson County Men’s League for forty years.

Survivors include his wife, Jane, one son - Donald (Carla) Carnes Jr., of Media, four daughters - Peggy Lynn (Jim) Pullins, Donna (Terry) Painter, and Tereasa Pence, all of Stronghurst, Bonnie Jo Carnes of Franklin, Tennessee, five grandchildren - Montana Pence, Travis Pence, Craig Carnes, Tracy (Jason) Eastin, Zach Swisher, three great grandchildren - Alec, Emma, and Abby Eastin, and one sister - Betty (Robert) Carmean of Stronghurst. He was preceded in death by one son - James Edward “Eddie” Carnes, and twelve brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday April 6, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Maurice Stribling officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Stronghurst cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals. Memorials have been established for the Camp Eastman Boy Scout Camp, Stronghurst American Legion Post #765, and the Stronghurst Lions Club.

Rex Carter

Mr. Rex H. Carter, age 60, of Burnside, Illinois passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 6:25 P.M. at his home.

He was born January 18, 1949 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Clifford and Margaret Mittermyer Carter. On August 4, 1987, he married Judyth Armstrong in Burlington, Iowa.

Mr Carter was an army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He had farmed, worked at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant, Chem-Gro, and Nauvoo Bleu Cheese Factory. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Bass Club of Fort Madison, and the NRA.

Survivors include his wife, one son Scott McGuire of Nauvoo, Illinois, two grandchildren - Tara Puckett and Sam McGuire, one great granddaughter - Kaleigha Puckett, one brother - Lee Carter of Burlington, Iowa, one sister - Linda Crabill of Joplin, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Graveside services with military rites will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday February 17, 2009 in the Appanoose cemetery near Niota, Illinois with Rev. Bill Deisher officiating. Masonic Rites will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the charity of the donor’s choice.

Beatrice B. Covert

Mrs. Beatrice B. Covert, 92, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 9:10 A.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

She was born August 12, 1916 in Augusta, Illinois, the daughter of Roy and Clara Koontz Wooldridge. On August 9, 1937 she married Gaylord A. Covert in Lacaster, Missouri. He preceded her in death in January 1975.

She was a 1934 graduate of Augusta High School. In 1978 she moved from rural Carthage, Illinois to LaHarpe. She worked at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage in the dietary department and at the LaHarpe School Cafeteria. She was a former member of the Rebekka Lodge in Carthage, the USA Club and the LaHarpe Union Church.

Surviving are one son, Philip Eugene Covert of Quincy, Illinois, one daughter, Carol (Richard) Edmunds of rural Dallas City, Illinois, five grandchildren, Robin Edmunds of Bloomington, Illinois, JoEllen Edmunds and Richard Edmunds, both of rural Dallas City and Christina Covert and Alex Covert both of Quincy, three great-grandchildren, Alaina Edmunds, Blaine Covert and Ty Covert, and one sister, Alice Grove of Good Hope, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers, Vernon and Roe Wooldridge.

Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery near Augusta. There will be no formal family visitation but friends may call at the funeral home between 5:00 and 8:00 P.M. Monday. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Union Church or for the staff at LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

Mike Day

Phillip Michael “Mike” Day, age 63 of rural Carman, Illinois, died at 10:50 p.m. Friday April 10, 2009 in the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born January 7, 1946 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Kenneth V. and Twila Jean Brown Day. He married Gloria Carnes. They later divorced. On August 30, 1980, he married Sally McNeil at Argyle State Park near Colchester, Illinois.

Mike had farmed for Evans’ Farms near Stronghurst for many years. He was a graduate of Media-Wever High School and also worked for the former Jacobs’ True Value Hardware Store in Stronghurst. He was an avid supporter of 4-H and FFA, and also coached PeeWee and Little Baseball and YMCA basketball

Survivors include his wife, Sally, one daughter - Tammy (Mike) Morris of Burlington, IA., four sons - Mike (Pam) Day Jr., of Media, IL., Mark (Tamara) Day of Carman, IL., Roy (Carla) Day of Blandinsville, IL., Mackenzie (Brooke Stull) Day of Carman, two step daughters - Mindi Bartlett, of Dallas City, IL., Amy McGowen of Colchester, IL., ten grandchildren - Robert Day, Phillip (Rose) Smith, Curtis Smith, Ashley, Lacey, Kaley, and Ro Day, Shelby and Trey Bartlett, and Devin Markham, one sister - Connie (Wendell) Booton, of Stronghurst, and three brothers - Richard (Marilyn) Day of Kahoka, MO., Dennis (Karen) Day of Carman, and Terry (Allison) Day of Meredosia, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild - Jimmy Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday April 14, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Pastor Dan Ashton officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals, where the family will be present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday. A memorial fund has been established.

Gordon D. DeSotel

Mr. Gordon D. DeSotel, 79, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Monday, February 2, 2009 at 5:10 A.M. at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

He was born October 12, 1929 in Luana, Iowa, the son of Emil and Irene Lindroth DeSotel. On June 7, 1949 he married Darlene Fett in Monona, Iowa.

Mr. DeSotel worked as a buttermaker for many years in Guttenberg and Petersburg, Iowa. In 1966 he moved to Dallas City and was employed as plant supervisor for the former Apple River Chemical Plant near Niota, Illinois. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Cindy Morarend of St. Louis, Missouri, three sons, Randy DeSotel of Dallas City, Dale DeSotel of Niota and Dave DeSotel of Danville, Iowa, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two sisters, Darlene Funk of Ten Sheep, Wyoming and Nyla DeSotel of Waukon, Iowa and one brother, Wayne DeSotel.

Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Pastor Doug Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home, Wednesday from 1:00 P.M. until time of services. A memorial fund has been established for the Great River Hospice House.

Joan M. Dooley

Mrs. Joan M. Dooley, 79, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Friday, August 28, 2009 at 3:00 A.M. at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe, Illinois.

She was born February 28, 1930 in Quincy, Illinois the daughter of Roy and Beulah Ross Schneeberger. On July 23, 1949 she married Leo J. Dooley in Quincy. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1992.

She was raised in Quincy and lived in Dallas City since 1957. She had attended nursing school in Quincy before her marriage. She served as a volunteer at the Memorial Hospital and the Hancock County Nursing in Carthage, Illinois. She enjoyed reading and sewing and was a member of the book club at the Carthage Library.

Surviving are five daughters, Janet Strope of Kansas City, Missouri, Mary Schiedel of Princeton, Illinois, Patty Peterson of Knoxville, Illinois, Sharon Puckett of Sedalia, Missouri and Sandy Johnson of Farmington, Iowa, three sons, David Dooley and Michael Dooley both of Dallas City and Roy Dooley of Rockport, Illinois, 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one sister, Janet Schneeberger of Quincy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, one son-in-law and her parents.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 31, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. There will be no formal visitation with the family but friends are welcome to stop at the funeral home Sunday from 2:00 until 5:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the Memorial Hospital, Carthage, IL.

Gary Jon Edwards

Gary Jon Edwards, age 66 of Carman, Illinois died at 5:51 p.m. Thursday August 20, 2009 in the University Of Iowa Hospitals And Clinics in Iowa City. He was born July 27, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Margaret Lawlor Edwards. On January 21, 1999, he married Karen Clause in Oquawka, Illnois

Mr. Edwards served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He had been employed as a conductor for the Burlington Northern/Sante Fe Railroad for 26 years.

Survivors include his wife, daughter - Margaret Baxter of Phoenix, AZ., and daughter- Diane, one stepdaughter - Cassie Mallory of Carman, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister - Barbara Johnson and one brother - David Edwards.

There will be no services or visitation. Cremation rites are being accorded. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst, IL is assisting the family.

Lorraine V. Elder

Mrs. Lorraine V. “Jinx” Elder, 88, of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Friday, November 13, 2009 at 4:40 P.M. at the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage, Illinois where she resided the past 51/2 years.

She was born June 15, 1921 in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Lucille Benning Heim. On October 10, 1945 she married Joseph D. Elder in Harpers Ferry. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1999.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed bowling, cooking and crafts.

Surviving are three daughters, Sandra (Sandy) Cole of Niota, Illinois, Linda (Dave) Lampe of Lockridge, Iowa and Marie Elder of Fort Madison, Iowa, a special niece, Shirley Gracey of Dallas City, 6 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City with Father Thomas Szydlik officiating. A private family burial service will be held at Harris cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established for the Hancock County Nursing Home. Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City is assisting with arrangements.

Alvin Feddersen

Alvin Feddersen, age 82 of Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 11:04 P.M. Tuesday February 17, 2009 in OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, Illinois. He was born July 21, 1926 in Clinton County, Iowa, the son of Jens and Emma Witt Feddersen.

Alvin had lived with his niece Carol Olsen, and her husband James, for the last thirteen years in Monmouth and Stronghurst. Prior to that he had lived in Wheatland and Eldridge, Iowa. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst.

On February 17th, he spent his first day with his beloved “Sissy” in Heaven. His last day on earth was spent doing what he loved most, as he was taken to Gordon Behrents Senior Center in Galesburg by WACC Transportation of Monmouth. A massive heart attack took him to his eternal home.

Survivors include two sisters in law - Mary and Hilda Feddersen and one brother in law - Howard Kearney. Also survivors are ten nieces and nephews, seventeen great and fourteen great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers - Arnold, Harry, Ralph and Robert Feddersen and by his twin sister - Alice Kearney.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday February 22, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst with Revs. Tom Larsen and James Olsen officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 P.M. Monday in Davenport Memorial Park cemetery in Davenport, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Gordon Behrents Senior Center in Galesburg and WACC Transportation of Monmouth.
