Milda Shay

Milda L. Shay, age 90 of Burlington, Iowa, died at 12:47 p.m. Monday January 5, 2009 in the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born February 4, 1918 in Vermont, Illinois, the daughter of Ralph W. and Lilly H. Lyebarger Higbee. On December 21, 1939 she was married to Kemper Williams. He preceded her in death in August of 1965. On November 6, 1966, she married Edward Shay. He preceded her in death on August 13, 2002.

She was a 1936 graduate of Industry High School and attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, Illinois. She had lived in the Quad Cities area during her first marriage, later moving to Lake Wildwood near Henry, Illinois, where she lived for 35 years. She moved to LaHarpe in 2002, and then to Burlington in 2005. She had worked as a buyer for Younkers and Montgomery Ward Department Stores, and later retired from Illinois Valley Savings and Loan in Henry. She had served as a Girl Scout Leader, Camp Director at Blackhawk Park, and was Secretary/Treasurer of Lake Wildwood Association.

Survivors include two sons - Fred (and Micki) Williams of Burlington, Iowa, Larry (and Connie) Williams of Timberling City, Missouri, two step children - Judy Shay of New Windsor, IL., Edward Shay of Metamora, IL., nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday January 7, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Illinois. Interment will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday in the Greenview Memorial cemetery in East Moline, Illinois. Memorials have been established for the LaHarpe Ambulance Service and LaHarpe Fire Department.

Megan R. Shutwell

Megan Renee Shutwell, age 26 of Galesburg, Illinois died at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday May 27, 2009 at her home. She was born April 22, 1983 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Jerry and Peggy McPeak Shutwell.

Megan was a 2001 graduate of the former Union High School in Biggsville where she was a member of the National Honor Society, and was outstanding in girls’ sports. She then attended Central College in Pella, Iowa where she participated in women’s volleyball and track. She loved animals and was a member of the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her parents of Biggsville, IL., three sisters- Stacey (Hector) Bucchianeri of Carson City, NV., Jennifer Thompson of Huntersville, NC., Michelle (Chris) Dunn of Albuquerque, NM., two brothers - Chad (Tessa) Shutwell of Fort Madison, IA., Nick (Melissa) Shutwell of Overland Park, KS., her grandmother - Virginia Shutwell of LaHarpe, IL., and six nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents - Vernon Shutwell and James E. and Donna McPeak.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday June 1, 2009 in the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Richard Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the LaHarpe cemetery, LaHarpe, Illinois. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Biggsvile United Presbyterian Church. A memorial fund has been established for the girls’ sports programs at West Central High School in Biggsville. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is in charge of arrangements.

Milton G. Simpson

Milton G. Simpson, age 84 of Stronghurst, Illinois died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday April 4, 2009 in the OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born November 6, 1924 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of F.G. and Maxine Lovitt Simpson. On February 13, 1949, he married Dorothy Starr in Scott City, Kansas.

Mr. Simpson was a 1943 graduate of Stronghurst High School. He was a C-47 flight engineer with the 64th Troop Carrier Group, 35th Troop Carrier Squadron of the United States Army Corps during World War II. He served in North Africa, Italy, and Trinidad. After his service, he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Miami, Oklahoma. He had been employed at the Scott City, Kansas airport, McDonald-Douglas Airplane Company in Wichita, Kansas, then returned to this area where he farmed on the family farm, south of Stronghurst. He also worked as a mechanic and substitute rural mail carrier for several years.

He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion, a fifty year member of the Oquawka Lodge #123, AF & AM, and 32nd Degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Blackhawk Motorcycle Chapter, Henderson County Olde Tymers, Southeast Iowa Antique Engine Association, and the Stronghurst United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, two daughters - Fran (David) Work of Gladstone, Illinois, Jane (James) Miller of Stronghurst, three grandsons - Christopher Miller, Eric and Alex Work, and one great granddaughter - Audrey Work. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no public services or visitation. Private interment with Masonic Rites will be held in the Stronghurst cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oquawka Lodge #143, Shriners Children’s Hospitals, or the Stronghurst Ambulance.

Henry B. "Hank" Snyder

Mr. Henry B. “Hank” Snyder, 71, of LaHarpe, Illinois passed away Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 2:07 AM at the St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.

He was born July 2, 1938 in Cornwall, New York, the son of Millard and Helen Byers Snyder. On September 10, 1966 he married Gloria Messineo in North Arlington, New Jersey.

Mr. Snyder served in the US Army from 1959 - 1962 and was stationed in the Phillipines and Greenland. Earlier in life he worked for Arco in Fort Madison, Iowa and later was Superintendent of the LaHarpe Water Department. Following that he worked for Armour-Dial in Fort Madison until taking disability retirement in 1985.

He was a member of the LaHarpe Fire Department, LaHarpe Lions Club, LaHarpe American Legion Post 301, LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195 and the LaHarpe Park District Board where he currently served as treasurer. He was instrumental in organizing the Red Cross Blood Drives in LaHarpe and served as a volunteer for the Reading For The Blind Program at WIU Radio Information Services. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, four daughters, Cathy (Richard) Oliver of Gentry, Arkansas, Gail Smith of Macomb, Illinois, Sharon (Duane) Berlett of LaHarpe and Robin (Norma Barnes-Euresti) Snyder of Kalamazoo, Michigan, five grandchildren, Christen VanCuren, Colin and Connor Beals, Abby and Alex Smith, two great-grandchildren, Ross Wilmoth and Abri VanCuren, one brother Millard G. “Bud” Snyder of Boynton Beach, Florida and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Frotten and his parents.

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 6, 2009 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Darren Beachy officiating. Burial with Military Rites will be in the LaHarpe cemetery. Masonic Rites will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe followed by visitation with the family until 5:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Fire Department or the WIU Radio Information Service.

John H. Spears

John H. Spears, age 78 of rural Stronghurst, Illinois died at 4:50 a.m. Wednesday January 7, 2009 in the University Of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born May 28, 1930 in Barrington, Illinois, the son of William and Mabel Berghorn Spears. On July 24, 1955, he married Helen Wahl in Naperville, Illinois.

John was a lifelong farmer in the Stronghurst area. He had served on the Henderson County Board, Media and Southern School Boards, the Board of Directors of Bridgeway in Galesburg, and the Walnut Grove cemetery Board. He had served as Share food coordinator for many years and also was Media Township Auditor for several years. He was a member of the Biggsville Lions Club and was an elder and deacon of the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, three daughters - Susan (and Robert) Scheer of LeClaire, Iowa, Janet (and Mark) Brewer of Tuscon, Arizona, Joanne (and Kevin) Swanson of Lawrenceville, Georgia, two sons - Tim (and Anna) Spears of Chicago, Illinois, Tom (and Carol) Spears of Washington, Iowa, nineteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one brother - William Spears of Vale, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday January 10, 2009 at the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church, followed by funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove cemetery near Media, Illinois. Family and friends are invited to return to the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church following the services for a luncheon and time of fellowship and remembrances. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Biggsville United Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund.

John O. Spiker

Mr. John O. Spiker, 76, of Lomax, Illinois passed away Monday, October 19, 2009 at 9:45 P.M. at his home.

He was born December 30, 1932 near Lomax, the son of Floyd and Helen Bowlyou Spiker.

Earlier in life he worked at a gas station in Dallas City, Illinois and at the JI Case Co. in Burlington, Iowa. For the past 36 years he owned and operated John’s Auto Sales in Lomax. He was instrumental in establishing the Lomax Saddle Club and had served as its president. He also played in a band.

Surviving are his special friend and companion of the last 17 years, Janice Baker, 5 daughters, Pamela Houghton of Downing, Missouri, Kathy Keith of Lomax, Lori “Buffy” Graber of Memphis, Missouri, Julie Alber of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Michelle Witte of Burlington, Iowa, 3 sons, Lance Alber of Burlington, Iowa, Delbert Alber of Gulfport, Illinois and gary Alber of Lomax, 17grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Larry Spiker of Lomax and 2 sisters, Sandy Dumsey of Danville, Iowa and Vivian Hartley of Memphis, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Donald Spiker.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 23, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. John Bremer officiating. Burial will be in the Crane cemetery, near Lomax. Friends may call after 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for the PAWS Animal Shelter, Ft. Madison, IA, Lomax Ambulance Service, Lomax Fire Department or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Linda L. (Rosenboom) Stinemates

Linda L. (Rosenboom) Stinemates, age 45, of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Niota, Illinois passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 6:00 AM at her home.

She was born December 1, 1963 in Fort Madison, Iowa the daughter of Don and Carolyn Rockel Rosenboom. In November of 1991 she married Herbert Eugene Stinemates. They later divorced.

Linda was a 1982 graduate of Dallas City High School and attended Southeastern Community College and Carl Sandburg College. She worked in an administrative role for various businesses. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington. Earlier in life she belonged to the Christ Lutheran Church in Nauvoo where she served as organist. She enjoyed the outdoors by taking long walks, doing counted cross stitching and helping others by volunteering on her days off.

She is survived by two daughters, Holly Marie Stinemates and Sarah Beth Stinemates, both at home, her parents of Niota, two sisters, Lisa (Matt) Baugher of Lebanon, Missouri and Lora (Jamie) Gregg of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, one brother, Lee Rosenboom of Chicago, three nephews, two nieces, aunts, uncles and her grandparents, Bill and Mary Alice Worden of Dallas City.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Horace Rockel, Harold and Geneva Rosenboom, and her step-grandmother, Wilda Rosenboom.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Christ Lutheran Church in Nauvoo with Pastor Gayle Pope officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Myers cemetery, rural Dallas City. The family will meet with friends, Sunday from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. A memorial fund has been established.

Charles C. Streadwick

Mr. Charles C. Streadwick, 82 of Birmingham, Illinois went to be with the Lord at 7:30 A.M. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in his home surrounded by his wife, Maryann, and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As per his request, no services are planned. Condolences and expressions of sympathy may be sent to Maryann G. Streadwick, RR 3 - Box 58, Plymouth, IL 62367.

Ralph Roland Sutcliffe

R. Roland Sutcliffe, age 69 of Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday May 11, 2009 in the Mission Hospital in Mission, Texas. He was born October 5, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Emaline Jane Dalton Sutcliffe. On November 11, 1960, he married Gloria Miller in Stronghurst. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2003. On June 3, 2004, he married Patricia Becker in Burlington, Iowa.

Roland worked as a mechanic for J.I. Case Company in Burlington, Iowa for twenty seven years. He also owned and operated his own trucking company from 1973 to 1989, and served as Stronghurst Township Road Commissioner from 1980 to 1988. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Oquawka Lodge #123 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of the York Rite and the Scottish Rite, and the Blandinsville Chapter of the Order Of The Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Oddfellows Lodge #61 of Monmouth, and the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints of Burlington.

Survivors include his wife Patricia, one daughter - Veronica (Don) Bundy of Stronghurst, one son - Bill (Michelle Patrick) Sutcliffe of Cumming Georgia, four stepsons, one step daughter, one grandson - Adam Sutcliffe and one great grandson - Kevin Sutcliffe. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday May 18, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Bishop Jonathan Snow officiating. Burial will be in the Olena cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals in Stronghurst with Masonic Rites at 5:00p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints of Burlington, Iowa.

Lois Tate

Lois Jeanettia Tate, age 84 of Lomax, Illinois passed away Wednesday March4, 2009 at Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois.

She was born June 8, 1924 in Green County, Illinois, the daughter of Harry S. and Ethel L. McAdams Holford. On June 20, 1942, she married Romane J. Tate in St. Charles, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 25, 2002.

Lois Lived most of her life in Lomax, and was a resident of Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab for the past twenty-seven months. She had worked at the Lomax Canning Factory, Lomax-Dallas City School District, and Pioneer Lumber Company homes division. She enjoyed her flowers, collecting toothpick holders, cooking, and spending time with her family and her “fair-weather” friend, Marilyn.

Survivors include three sons - Harry W. (Mae Dell) Tate, and Otho D. (Pamela) Tate, both of Dallas City, IL., Frankie J. (Eileen) Tate of Gladstone, IL., one daughter - Diana L. (Thomas) Doran of Carman, Illinois, a son in law - Herbie Smith of Sherrard, IL., twelve grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren, two brothers - Robert Holford of Eldred, IL., Herman (Joy) Holford of Winchester, IL., and one sister - Janie Jones of Eldred, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two daughters - Sara S. Tate and Mary Ann Smith.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday March 7, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Menschel officiating. Burial will be in the Terre Haute cemetery, Terre Haute Illinois. Memorials have been established for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab, Community Hospices Of America, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Maxine M. Terry

Mrs. Maxine M. Terry, age 91, a resident of the Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage, Illinois, formerly of Dallas City, Illinois passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 12:25 P.M. at the Memorial Hospital in Carthage.

She was born November 25, 1917 near Dallas City, the daughter of J. Frank and Minnie Avise Paulus. On April 13, 1941 she married Lyle G. Terry in Lancaster, Missouri.

Mrs. Terry worked as a clerk at grocery stores in both Dallas City and Colusa. She also worked at the Post Office in Colusa and at the Hancock County Treasurer’s office. She was an avid baker. She did catering and made and decorated many cakes and candy. She was a member of the Dallas City American Legion Auxiliary for 60 years and the Colusa United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Lyle, of the Hancock County Nursing Home, her twin sister, Eileen Lehr of Carthage, 11 nieces and nephews, 19 great-nieces and nephews and 23 great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Eugene Terry, one brother, Lloyd Paulus and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City with Rev. Jim Luder officiating. Burial will be in the Harris cemetery near Dallas City. There will not be a formal family visitation, but friends are welcome to stop at the funeral home between 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Colusa United Methodist Church.

Roy Thorell

Roy Thorell, age 80 of Stronghurst, Illinois, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday August 12, 2009 in the Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab Center in Stronghurst. He was born April 26, 1929 in LaHarpe, Illinois, the son of Vernon and Lura Lovitt Thorell.

Mr. Thorell was a graduate of Terre Haute, Illinois High School and attended Western Illinois University in Macomb. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had lived in Burnside, Adrian and most recently, Terre Haute, where he farmed and was a seed corn dealer. He retired from farming in1995 and moved to Stronghurst. He was a member of Parkview Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Galesburg, Illinois.

Survivors include one sister - Fern Stout of Glen Carbon, IL., three nieces - Jolynn (Dave) Gregor of Edwadrsville, IL., Joan (Scott) Smith of Troy, MO., Jane Stout of Wilmington, OH., one grandniece, three grandnephews, and two great grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother in law - Vernon Stout, and one nephew - Stephen Stout.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday August 16, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. Burial will be in the Terre Haute cemetery, Terre Haute, Illinois. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Banks & Beals. A memorial fund has been established for Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst.

Charles Eugene Vancil

Charles Eugene “Chuck” Vancil, age 85 of Lomax, Illinois died at 12:05 a.m. Saturday August 1, 2009 at his home. He was born September 28, 1923 in Augusta, Illinois, the son of Arbry and Grace Blansett Vancil. On June 8, 1968, he married Sandra Jeanne Gaibel.

Mr. Vancil was an Army Veteran of World War II. He had worked for Champion Spark Plug of Burlington, IA for many years, retiring in 1985. Prior to that he had worked as a truck driver, was a mechanic for Bagley Motors in Roseville, IL for many years, owned and operated the Sinclair Station in Lomax, and was greenskeeper for Hendco Hills Golf Club near Biggsville. He was dedicated to the Dallas City Rural Fire Protection District and was a volunteer firefighter for many years. He was a former Lomax Village Mayor and was a volunteer driver for the Lomax Ambulance Service. He was a member of the Dallas City American Legion and the Lomax Christian Church .

Survivors include his wife, Sandra, two sons - Michael Vancil of England, Michael (Tammy) Martin of Moline, IL., five daughters - Bette Sage Boughton of the state of Virginia, Debbra Martin of Lomax, Sherri Martin of Moline, Cindy Prier of Burlington, IA., Ruth (Bob) Crupper of Hulbert, OK, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and three “unofficially adopted” children - Marcia Ryberg of Galesburg, IL, Clarence “Gene” Roarke, of Lomax, and Bryan Hubbard of Stronghurst. He was preceded in death by two sons - Charles Joseph “CJ” Vancil and Clifford "Duffy" Sage, one great granddaughter - Natalie Prier, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday August 4, 2009 in the Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst with Rev. Peggy Stott officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Crane cemetery, near Lomax. Friends may call after 5:00 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday. Memorials have been established for the Dallas City Veterans Memorial, Lomax Fire Department, and Hospice of Henderson County Health Department.
