Marjorie E. Stagg, 95, of Kewanee, Il. died, Saturday, February 12, 2005 at OSF St Francis Hospital in Peoria, Il. She was born April 6, 1909 in Kewanee the daughter of J. Fremont and Clara Adelaide (Bing) Bates. She graduated from Kewanee High School.

She married Donald F. Swanson August 19, 1932 in Toulon, Il. He died June 25, 1969. She later married Carl Stagg October 1, 1976 in Kewanee, Il. He survives along with two daughters Janelle Johnson of Kewanee and Beth (Iradj) Taheri of Toulon, Il. Three step daughters Phyllis (Bruce) Fiddus, Mary (Maynard) Vetter and Karen (Joe) Wynn all of Peoria, Il. and one step son Gordon (Anne) Stagg of West Suffield, Connecticut. Four grandchildren Dr. Jeff (Pam) Johnson,) Jacqueline (Kevin) Callahan, Angela (David) Matteson and Soraya (Clint) McLaughlin. Four great grandchildren. Twenty four step grandchildren and thirty four step great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters Bess Johnson of Kewanee and Dorothy (Harold) Johnson of Punta Gorda, Fl. She was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.

She had been employed at Kewanee Works Walworth Co. and later was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kewanee, the churches Women’s Circle and the United Methodist Women, the Kewanee Women’s Club, Bobtown Club of Kewanee, Flemish American Club and Henry County Home Extension serving as chairman in 1957. She enjoyed hand crafts and cross word puzzles.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Kewanee. Rev. Harry Prince will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday, February 15th at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church Pipe Organ Fund or the Kewanee Schools Foundation.

Andrew M. “Andy” Peed
12/31/1933 - 02/12/2005
Andrew M. “Andy” Peed, 71, of Kewanee, Illinois died at 11:45 A.M. Saturday, February 12, 2005 at his home. He was born December 31, 1933 in Sheffield, Illinois the son of John R. and Pearl (Barringer) Peed. He attended Sheffield and Kewanee schools.

He married Norma J. Imes January 3, 1953 in Kewanee. She survives along with two sons Thomas Peed and Rick (Elsie) Peed. Three daughters Pamela (Ed) Witte, Jean Hamilton and Gloria (Perry) Hill all of Kewanee. Eight grandchildren Tim (Brooke) Witte, Brandi (Johnnie) Elias, Thomas Peed II, Tabitha (Troy) Ainley, Melissa (Mick Schwigen) Hill and Scott Peed all of Kewanee and Steven (Sarah) Witte, of Orion, Il., and Andrea (Dan) Donnelly of Edgartown, Mass. Also surviving are eight great grandchildren Andrew “Drew” and Devin Peed, Taylor, Hunter, Garrett and Aidan Witte, Bryce Elias and Madison Schwigen and two step great grandchildren Sadie Elias and Hannah Ainley.

His parents and five brothers preceded him in death. He was retired from the United Parcel Service, Peru, Il. in 1992 with twenty five years of service and was a member of Teamsters Union Local #710. Following retirement, he did locksmith work and owned and operated a small machine and care repair ship for five years. He joined the Army National Guard in 1956 and was a member for thirteen years. He was a member of the Kewanee Krash Klub and 17 Lakes Fishing Club. He enjoyed fishing, model airplanes and spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 17, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson funeral home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Jerry Rafalko and Pastor Bob Thomas will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services and private family inurnment will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Kewanee Hospice.

Marjorie “Midge” Shinkevich
03/06/1909 - 02/11/2005
Marjorie “Midge” Shinkevich, 95, of Kewanee, Il. died at 7:49 P.M. Friday, February 11, 2004 at Royal Oaks Care Center in Kewanee. She was born March 6, 1909 in Kewanee the daughter of George and Clair (Hirtfeldt) Shinkevich. She was reared and educated in Kewanee. She married John Shinkevich September 10, 1927. He died in 1973. She was also preceded in death by a son Mick, one sister and one brother in infancy.

Surviving is one son Jerry (Joan) Shinkevich of Kewanee and one daughter in law Kay. Six grandchildren Jill (Greg) DeKeyser, Janet (Brian) Ludwig, Jennifer (Jens) Vidjker, Jayne (Phil) Tjardes, Tami (Dave) Harker and Tim (Heather) Shinkevich. Fifteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She had been employed at the Kewanee YMCA and Peoples National Bank. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Kewanee having served as a deacon. She was also a member of the Kewanee Senior Citizens and the Flemish American Club. She enjoyed swimming, Kewanee girl’s softball and watching all of her grandchildren play various sports.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Danny Grimes will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Tuesday, February 15th at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established and contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Robert A. Piester
06/05/1934 - 02/08/2005
Robert A. Piester, 70, of Prophetstown and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died at 2:55 A.M. Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at his home. He was born June 5, 1934 in Kewanee, Il. and attended Kewanee schools. He married Janet E. Foley July 8, 1955 in Kewanee, Il.

She survives along with one daughter Robin Cooper of Prophetstown, Il. and two sons Michael (Becky) Piester of Lyndon, Il. and John Piester of Prophetstown. Six grandchildren Emmalee, Dustin, Danyell, Seantae, Cody and Sierra. Also surviving is one brother Richard Piester of Wisconsin and two sisters Irene Behnke of Colona, Il. and Lorraine Wankett, of Annawan, Il.

His parents preceded him in death.

He was employed in the Foundry at John Deere in the Quad Cities and retired after 32 years with the company in 1992.

He was a member of the John Deere local United Auto Workers and enjoyed old cars.

There will be no visitation or services. Private family burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army. Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Gray “Mick” Frick
02/05/1934 - 01/23/2005
Robert Gray “Mick” Frick, 70, of Kewanee, Il. died at 12:44 P.M. Sunday, January 23, 2005 at his home.

He was born February 5, 1934 in Kewanee the son of Roy Gray and Flossie Belinda (Cubbage) Frick. He graduated from Kewanee High School. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1957. He was retired from the City of Kewanee Water Department.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Kewanee and the Kewanee American Legion. He enjoyed listening to music and restoring antiques. He had been a gourmet cook and had owned a restaurant in Denver, Co.

Surviving is one brother James (Mary) Frick of Flower Mound, Texas. His parents, one brother and six sisters preceded him in death.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, January 27, 2005 in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Brian Giese of the First Christian Church will officiate. Military honors will accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society, Kewanee Hospital Foundation or the Kewanee Senior Citizen Center.

Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee is in charge of arrangements.

Randall Elmo “Randy” Gutschlag

Randall Elmo “Randy” Gutschlag, 63 of Galva, Il. died at his home at 1:45 P.M. Friday, January 21, 2005.

He was born July 22, 1941 in Kewanee the son of Elmo Bernard and Laura Catherine (Couve) Gutschlag. He was reared and educated in Kewanee. He had been employed as a mechanic for Taylor and Son in Kewanee and later worked as a mechanic for numerous garages in the area and was the road Commissioner for Burns Township in Henry County. He was also the manager of Riesebieters Garage in Galva.

He was married to Loretta Porter in 1963. They were later divorced. He married Nancy Riesebieter August 5, 1999 in Galva. She survives along with five sons Brett (Rikki) Gutschlag of Sheffield, Il. Denny Gutschlag of Lincoln, Ill, Terry (Donna) Gutschlag of Sheffield, Il. Robert and Jayme Gutschlag both of Neponset., Il sixteen grandchildren. Stepchildren include stepdaughters Mrs. John (Kathleen) Hergert, Mrs. Mike (Carla) Watson and Amy Vermost and stepsons Gene (Kim) Serres, Kim (Jill) Peve. Four brothers Kenny (Barb) Gutschlag of Kewanee, David Gutschlag of Freeport, Il. Steven (Deb) Gutschlag of Peoria, Il. and Lynn Gutschlag of Kewanee and two sisters Carol Gutschlag of Kewanee and Joyce Schlaud of Riverside, Ca.

His parents preceded him in death.

He enjoyed drag racing and raced his own cars. He also enjoyed hunting, garden tractor pulling and dancing with his wife. He enjoyed plowing snow for the Burns Township country roads. Along with Ray Behnke, he started the Model T races which are held each Labor Day weekend in Kewanee.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Revs. Martin Gutzmer and James Hancock will officiate. Entombment will be in the Pleasant View Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Monday, January 24, 2005 at the funeral home. A memorial has been established and contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Charlotte L. Schwabe McKinney

Charlotte Lyle Schwabe McKinney, 83, a resident of Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs, New York and formerly of Kewanee died Sunday, January 16, 2005.

She was born March 7, 1921 in Fort Smith, Arkansas the daughter of John and Lenna Beryl (Woods) Schwabe. She attended schools in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego, Ca. and was a 1938 graduate of Champaign High School and a 1941 graduate of the University of Illinois with a BA and majors in Speech and French. She attended graduate college at the University of Illinois with an MA and majors in Speech and Language, graduating in 1944. She taught school for many years in Illinois at Melvin Community High School, Casey Township High School, Highland Park High School, University of Illinois, Black Hawk East Community College in Kewanee and Kewanee High School. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, AAUW, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Kewanee, the Ladies Reading Club, the Kewanee Women’s Club and Midland Country Club and was an honorary member of the FFA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence David McKinney, Jr.

Surviving is a daughter Carole Elizabeth (Robert L.) Loffredo of Saratoga Springs and two granddaughters Jennifer Lynne Loffredo of Ballston Spa, NY and Michelle Elizabeth Loffredo of Rochester, NY.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 21, 2005 at St. John’s Episcopal Church of the Quincy Diocese, Kewanee, Illinois. Rev. James Marshall will officiate. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Church. Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of the arrangements.

Guy Walter “Walt” Ripka
04/10/1916 - 01/15/2005
Guy Walter “Walt” Ripka, 88, of Kewanee, Il. died at 12:06 P.M. Saturday, January 15, 2004 at his home. He was born April 10, 1916 in rural Kewanee the son of Elmer and Mabel (Ladd) Ripka. He graduated from Kewanee High School in 1933.

He married Marjorie M. Kildow on August 16, 1939 in Kewanee. She survives along with three sons Guy Alan (Trudy) Ripka of Metamora, Il., Richard (Ruth) Ripka of Galesburg, Il. and James (Beverly) Ripka of Macks Creek, Missouri and one daughter Nancy Johnston of Kewanee.

Fourteen grandchildren Julia, Della, Dane, Stephen, Tara, Brian, Beth, Josh, Gabriel, Guy Jordan, Christopher, Chase, Brenton and Andrea and two great grandchildren Ethan and Miranda. Also surviving is a sister Mrs. Erma Souder of Kewanee. His parents and a sister Irene Broadbent preceded him in death.

Mr. Ripka was a long time farmer in Kewanee and Galva prior to his retirement. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kewanee. He was a member of the National Farmer’s Organization, Bowler’s Association, Kewanee Kiwanis and Golden “K’ Clubs. He was a driver for Abilities Plus vans for eight years and was active in the Kewanee Relay for Life Cancer Walk having been a cancer survivor for 25 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, golf, gardening, playing pool and was an avid Cub’s fan.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. K. Bruce Rushing of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, rural Kewanee. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to his church or the American Cancer Society.

Leonard D. Fleming
04/13/1917 - 01/15/2005
Leonard D. Fleming, 87, of Kewanee, Il died 1:38 a.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Kewanee Hospital. He was born April 13, 1917 in Colona Twp. Il. son of Mel and Marie (Simonse) Fleming. He was educated in rural schools. He married Neena Ptasnik September 1, 1945 in Kewanee. She survives as well as 2 daughters Mrs. Phil (Donna) Alcocer of Bellevue, Nebraska and Mrs. Robert (Rita) Christy of Knoxville, Iowa. Two grandchildren Stephanie and Ann-Marie and one great grandson. Also surviving is one sister Margaret Michalik of Kewanee. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Emma Vandemore, Anna Ahlgren and Sofie Fleming and three brothers, Henry, Edward and Frank.

He farmed in Burns Township for 42 years, and then worked for the Overbaugh International Dealership in Galva Il, retiring in 1979. He helped build the Burns Grange Hall and was an active member for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Kewanee. He enjoyed bowling with the Grange League, golfing in the Senior League at Baker Park, and playing cards. He was recognized in 1983 for making a “Hole in 1” at Baker Park Golf course. He enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Freddie Gomez Torres officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Schueneman & Tumbleson funeral home where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Baker Park.
