Elaine J. “Tina” Kuster

Elaine J. “Tina” Kuster, 80, of Kewanee, Il. died at 6:15 A.M. Friday, November 28, 2014 at her home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Faith Lutheran Church in Kewanee. Rev. David Gerke will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens rural Kewanee, where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church or the Kewanee High School Athletic Department.

Tina was born August 20, 1934 in Kewanee, the daughter of Max and Margaret (Fuerst) Kuster. She graduated from Kewanee High School in 1952. Tina played for the famous Kewanee Ballhawks softball team from 1948-1957 carrying the city of Kewanee’s name across the Midwest. This included the 1956 team that went undefeated. Tina served in the United States Air Force from 1958-1961 and was instrumental in bringing women’s athletics to Caswell Air Force Base. Tina excelled in both basketball and softball. She was a member of the SAC championship softball team and played on an All-Star basketball team at Barksdale Air Force Base.

After returning home from the service, she remained an avid supporter of the sports teams at KHS. Tina was named honorary Boilermaker in 2013. She had been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many years and was now a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Kewanee. Tina was employed at Hyster Co. in Kewanee for over 30 years. Tina was the caretaker at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home for the past 15 years.

Surviving are three sisters Geraldine “Jeri” Helmkamp and Joyce Long of Kewanee, and Jeanne Hintz of Davenport, Ia. and three generations of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Opal Kuster.

Mary Jane Octavi Jones
07/20/1952 - 11/10/2014
Mary Jane Octavi Jones, 62, of Kewanee, Il. died at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 10, 2014 at her home. Mary was born July 20, 1952 in Latrobe, Pa. the daughter of Paul and Helen (Kropilak) Onderko.

Mary graduated from Latrobe High School in 1970 and Westmoreland Community College. Mary married John Octavi in 1972. They were later divorced. She was with Bruce Haxby of Kewanee for 25 years until his death in 2001. Mary married Mike Jones on May 24, 2011. They had been together since 2003.

Surviving is her husband Mike, one brother Ron (Lynn) Onderko of Glastonbury, Ct., five sisters BettyAnn Bridge of Latrobe, Pa. and her friend Rob Trainer, Paula (Dave) Pottinger of Eugune, Or., Judith (Pat) Murphy of Craig, Alaska, Cindy (George) Lechman of Greensburg, Pa., and Michelle (Tim) Ferguson of Ligonier, Pa., one aunt Mary Tandarich and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her best friend Donna Hintze of Pleasant Valley, Ia. Mary was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary had been employed at the Kewanee and Davenport K-Mart stores for 25 years and as a photo specialist at Kewanee Walgreens for six years.

Mary’s passion in life was cooking, especially baking cookies and pies. She enjoyed animals, traveling and life in general. Mary was an avid exerciser and loved to take long and fast walks.

Cremation was accorded. A Celebration of her life and time of sharing with the family will be from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home. Inurnment will be private for the family at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Darlene L Begyn

Darlene L. Begyn, 97, of Kewanee, Il. died at 8:30 A.M. Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at OSF St. Luke Hospital in Kewanee.

Darlene was born July 24, 1917 in Kewanee the daughter of Homer and Minnie (Calcutt) DeBord. She grew up in Kewanee. Darlene married Peter Begyn on September 15, 1939 in Kewanee. He died on February 27, 2009. She was also preceded in death by two brothers Homer and Donald, three sisters Eva Bender, Eleanor Schreck and Dorothy Bengston.

Surviving is a daughter Priscilla (Steve) Simpson of Kewanee and one sister Doris Porter of Kewanee.

Darlene had been employed at the Boss Glove Co. and later worked at the Happy Hour, Allen’s Dairy Restaurant, Porters Family Shoe Outlet and was still an Avon representative. Darlene was a member of Visitation Catholic Church, St. John Paul II Parish of Kewanee and its altar and rosary society. She was also a member of the Catholic Order of Forrester’s and the Flemish-American Club of Kewanee. Darlene enjoyed bingo and watching game shows; especially Wheel of Fortune. She was known for her Butterscotch and Banana Cream Pies.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Deacon Martin VanMeltebeck will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Helen L Hernandez
08/27/1936 - 11/20/2014
Helen L. Hernandez, 78, of Geneseo, Il. and formerly of Kewanee died, Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Good Samaritan Home in Geneseo. Helen was born August 27, 1936 in Milan, Mo. the daughter of John and Nora (Montgomery) Glidewell. She married Eugene Hernandez in 1954. He preceded her in death in 2012. She was also preceded in death by a son Steve, a daughter Penny Sue, four brothers Russell, Conley, Charlie and Kenneth and a sister Juanita.

Surviving is a daughter Rose (Chris) Boehle of Geneseo, three sons Eugene Hernandez of Kewanee, John (Chin) Hernandez of Davenport, Ia. and Thomas Hernandez and his special friend Michelle of Kewanee, two brothers Edward Glidewell of Taylor Ridge, Il. and John (Lynda) Glidewell of Milan, Il. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Helen owned and operated Helen’s Boarding Home in Kewanee for twenty years. She also served as caretaker of the La Chateau 40 & 8 for six years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at the home of her daughter, 125 East Rusholme St. Davenport, Ia. from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 29, 2014. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of arrangements.

Everett R Whitcher

Everett R. Whitcher, 85, of Kewanee, Il. died at 8:15 A.M. Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo, Il. Everett was born December 4, 1929 in Williamsburg, Kansas the son of Earl and Roxannie (Hammock) Whitcher. He moved to Toulon, Il as a teenager where he lived with his maternal grandparents.

Everett married Donna J. White on September 17, 1953 in Kewanee, Il. She survives along with one daughter Louann (Steve) Jacobs of Mineral, Il. three sons Everett Whitcher and Diane, Leo (Teresa) Whitcher and Frank (Toni) Whitcher all of Kewanee, sixteen grandchildren, Michelle (Tony) Solomon, Katrina (Craig) Hoffman, Mira Whitcher, Steve (Allison) Whitcher, Brad (Joda) Whitcher, Adam Whitcher, Mike Whitcher, Erica DeSplinter, Kathy (Gary) Picklesimer, Patty (Jeremy) Belden, Michelle Calmer, Jason Hudson, Terry (Amy) Hudson, Kim (Rick) Fernandez, Darcy Holtschult and Jimmy Jones, thirty five great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Everett was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Robert Larry Whitcher and one sister Jesse Vietta Jackson, one grandson Robert Jacobs and a great grandson Brandon Keel. Everett was preceded in death by his parents.

He had been employed in Road Construction and at Kewanee Manufacturing Co. prior to his retirement. He enjoyed fishing on the canal, playing cards and spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday, December 10th at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Friends of the Hennepin Canal.

Dorothy Heberer

Heaven welcomed our beloved mother Dorothy Heberer on May 22, 2013. She was there with her husband Phil; who has been waiting 34 years to be with her again. Dorothy passed away at her home in Kewanee with family by her side.

It was her wishes to be cremated. Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 31, 2013. in Mount Olivet cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Deacon Martin VanMeltebeck of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Kewanee will officiate. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed in Dorothy’s name to Make-a-Wish Foundation, or the Kewanee Park District. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy was born February 12, 1927 in Kewanee the daughter of Jess and Caroline Smith. She graduated from Kewanee High School. Dorothy married the loved of her life, Philip E. Heberer on October 10, 1948. He preceded her in death in 1979. She was also preceded by her parents, seven sisters, four brothers, one son Ernest, and one grandson

Surviving Carol (Tom) Bryan of Kewanee, Lyle (Mary) Ince of Kewanee, Kathleen (Bob) Gardner of Cambridge, Phyllis (Ned) Stuckey of Kewanee, Mary (Phil) Good of Kewanee, James (Sue) Heberer of Kewanee, John Heberer of Kewanee, Robert (Lynn) Heberer of Kewanee, William Heberer of Moline, Ill, Barbara (Jim) Boss of Kewanee and Christine (Larry) Velander of Mount Holley, N.C., 28 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

Dorothy held many titles in her life—daughter, sister, aunt, devoted wife, loving mother, good neighbor and a friend to many.

Dorothy valued and cherished her family and friends. They could count on her to listen but not judge. She loved good food and good company. She truly visited with everyone; she knew no strangers. Her favorite pastime in later years was going to the riverboat. Thanks to her family and friends she was able to do this. Thanks Marilyn, Aussie, Ron and Carol and all the other friends.

Darlene Boswell

Darlene Boswell, 96, of Davenport, Ia. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. and Bettendorf, Ia went to Heaven at 10:26 P.M. Wednesday, May 1 , 2013

Darlene was born June 30, 1916 in Blandinsville, Il. the daughter of Zella and Jennie (Williams) Fisher. She moved to Kewanee when she was 6 months old. She attended Kewanee Schools and graduated from Kewanee High with class of 1934.

Darlene married William Boswell on April 12, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1956. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Patricia Ann in 1940, her parents and her son-in-law Rich Froke.

Darlene had been employed in the Engineering Dept of Kewanee Boiler Corp for 18 years retiring in 1982.

She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee where she taught Sunday School, was a member and past president of the WAWTABT Sunday School Class, Lydia and Naomi Circles. Darlene had also served on the board of Trustees, Deacons and Deaconesses and Missionary. Darlene served as President of the Kewanee Area AARP for many years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching the Chicago Cubs and was an avid reader. Darlene moved from Kewanee to Luther Knoll Apartments in Bettendorf in 2009 to be closer to her son and daughter-in-0law and their family. She moved to the Davenport Lutheran Home in 2012.

Surviving is a son William (Peggy) Boswell of Davenport, Ia., a daughter Carol Froke of Las Vegas, Nv. a grandson William (Debbie)Boswell of Wentzville, Mo, three granddaughters Theresa (Steve) Parker of San Rosa, Ca., Michelle (Scott) Ripperton of Davenport, Ia, and Janine Verschage of Las Vegas, Nv., four great grandson and four great granddaughters, a sister Lois Peterson of O’Fallon, Il. and two nieces.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Dr. Kevin Siscoe of the First Baptist Church will officiate.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church 123 South Tremont St., Kewanee, Il. 61443 or the Genesis VNA and Hospice 2546 Tech Drive, Bettendorf, Ia 52722.

Nita Rainer Clancy

Nita Rainer Clancy, 91, of Kewanee, Il. died at 9:30 P.M. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Toulon Health Care Center. Nita was born on August 22, 1921 in Galesburg, Il. the daughter of Herbert and Alma (Olin) Childers. She grew up in Yates City, Il. and graduated from High School there.

Nita married Eugene Byron Clancy on June 30, 1939 in Fort Madison, Ia. He preceded her in death in July of 1973.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son Thomas Leslie Clancy, a daughter-in-law Terrilyn Clancy, four brothers Gaylord, Virgil, Bernard and Herbert Childers and two sisters Iola Grant and Elva Vaughn.

Surviving are three sons Leonard (Judine) Clancy of Neponset, Il., Daniel Leroy (Kathleen) Clancy of The Villages, Fl. Robert Wayne Clancy of Plattsmouth, Ne. and a former daughter-in-law Mary Pruitt of Smithville, Mo. 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. A homemaker, Nita also worked in housekeeping at the Lodge at Starved Rock State Park and operated a resort at Bull Shoals Lake, Arkansas prior to retirement in 1987. She enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles, reading, playing cards and spending time with her family.

Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Cremation will be follow with family graveside services and committal in the Osceola cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Preferred Home Care and Hospice, Kewanee, Il.

Katherine R. “Kate” Hodgett

Katherine R. “Kate” Hodgett, 98, of Kewanee, Il. died at 7:24 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013 at her home. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 10, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Anthony Bernas officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. The Schueneman & Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Henry County Senior Citizens Center.

Kate was born October 3, 1914 in LaFayette, IL. the daughter of Henry and Katherine (Jones) Hagerty. She was reared and educated in LaFayette schools. Kate married Leonard W. Hodgett on September 14, 1948 in Kewanee. He preceded her in death in 1996. She was also preceded by 2 brothers Paul and Joe and 2 sisters Rosemary and Joan. Kate is survived by one son Marty (Jan) Hodgett of Kewanee, 3 grandchildren Lee, Lynn, Lesa, and also 7 great grandchildren. Kate worked for many years at the Kroger’s store at all 3 Kewanee locations, retiring in 1977. Kate was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Kewanee. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
