William H. Quinn
William H. Quinn, of Lake Carroll and formerly of Marengo died Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at his son's home in Camanche, Iowa.
He was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on November 29, 1922, son of Cleveland and Lillian (Young) Quinn. He married Lauretta Frasher on October 10, 1942 in Chicago. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and a member of the First Air Commandos.
William is survived by two sons, William R. (Linda) Quinn of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin and Robert (Penny) Quinn of Camanche, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Christopher (Jill) Quinn of Villa Park, Cathleen Quinn of Grand Marais, Minnesota., Ed Dowell and David (Sarah) Dowell all of Cedarville, Steve Quinn of Spring Grove, Nicole (Kevin) Stowe of Clinton, Iowa, and Amanda and Michael Bratthauer of Camanche, Iowa; three great grandchildren, Zachary William Quinn of Villa Park, Ashley Gail Dowell of Cedarville and Arian Rose Stowe of Clinton, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Mary Frasher of Marengo. His wife, Lauretta in 1991, preceded William in death.
Visitations were held from 2-9 p.m. Sunday, January 7 at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, Marengo. Visitations were continued from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 p.m. Monday, January 8. Interment was in the Marengo City Cemetery. Memorials in his name may be made to the Salvation Army.

Florence Arlene Melendy
Florence Arlene Melendy, age 88, of Savanna died Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.
Cremation took place and a Memorial Service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Reverend Thomas Moe of the First United Methodist Church, Savanna officiated. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson.
Florence was born on June 23, 1918 in Mt. Carroll, the daughter of Orlo W. and Marian R. (Emery) Smith. She attended Mt. Carroll Schools, graduating with the Class of 1936. On June 18, 1936, Florence married Paul "Red" Melendy in Mt. Carroll.
Florence enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Savanna. From the years of 1939 ­1942, Red and Florence owned and operated the Original Hire's Root Beer stand on Chicago Avenue in Savanna, before it became the Chicken Coop. Through the years she enjoyed playing cards, was a Girl Scout Leader, and "girl friday" for Melendy's Plumbing and Heating.
Florence will be dearly missed by her husband, "Red" Melendy of Savanna; a daughter, Nena (David) Engaldo of Downers Grove; and two grandchildren, Jeff (Melissa) Engaldo and Jennifer (Norm) Sidler; and five great grandchildren.

Carol Marie Heffelfinger
Carol Marie Heffelfinger, age 61, of Sterling, died Saturday, January 6, 2007 at KSB Hospital in Dixon.
Mrs. Heffelfinger was born July 19, 1945 in Morrison the daughter of Richard and Catherine (Oberle) Taylor and the late Albert DeNeve. She married Kenneth R. Heffelfinger on June 3, 1967 in Sterling. She worked as a Payroll Clerk at NWS&W and also took care of her grandchildren. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling. She enjoyed family get togethers and attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting events and school activities.
Survivors include her husband of Sterling; her parents, Catherine (Richard) Taylor of Sterling; one daughter, Tricia Heffelfinger of Sterling; three sons, Tim (Amy) Heffelfinger of Sterling; Ted (Lynn) Heffelfinger of Sterling; and Todd (Michelle) Heffelfinger of Sterling; two brothers, Randy (Lorri) Taylor of Sterling and Rick (Debbie) Taylor of Tampico; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Dillan, Madison, Kassidy, Luke, Ryan, Hunter, and Kaylee; one sister-in-law, Diana DeNeve of Long Grove, IA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Her father; one brother, Jim DeNeve; and one niece, Carrie Taylor, precede Catherine in death.
Prayer services will be Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at 9:30 AM at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls followed by Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling with Reverend Paul Lipinski officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 9, 2007 from 5 - 8 PM at the funeral home with the rosary recited at 4:30 PM. Burial will conclude the services at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling. A memorial has been established in her memory.

Betty Sites
Betty Sites, age 81, of Milledgeville, died Monday, November 6, 2006 at her home.
Mrs. Sites was born June 9, 1925 in Des Moines, IA the daughter of Cloy and Mable (Smith) Gilbert. She married Paul Sites on October 7, 1945 in Milledgeville. She retired in 1986 from the Farm Credit System as a record keeper.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane (Wayne) Bossler of Maryland and Anne (Ray) Schubert of Freeport; one sister, Lois Leonard of CA; two brothers, Robert Gilbert of Milledgeville and Earl Gilbert of TX; and three grandchildren; one great granddaughter.
Her husband and parents precede Betty in death.
Memorial services were held Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 4:30 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Milledgeville with Reverend Kathy Burkheimer officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be Saturday from 3:30 - 4:30 PM at the church.
A memorial has been established to the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Illinois State Grange Memorial/Honor Scholarship.

Thomas W. Fritz
Thomas W. Fritz, age 89, of Mt. Carroll died Friday, November 10, 2006 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 14 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Reverend Mark Harkness of the Mt. Carroll Methodist Church officiated. Visitations were held from 9:30­11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Funeral Home, prior to the service. Memorials may be made in Tom's name for the Good Samaritan Nursing Home or FHN Hospice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Tom was born March 12, 1917 in Freedom Township, the son of Ward and Ethel (Williamson) Fritz. He was raised on the family farm. He is a graduate of the Mt. Carroll High School with the Class of 1935. On May 2, 1942, Tom married F. Virginia Moore.
Tom farmed all of his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and was an avid golfer. He liked to watch the Chicago Cubs and Bears on TV. In his younger years, Tom was known as one of the area's top softball pitchers. He also was an umpire for many local baseball and softball games.
Tom was a charter member of the Mt. Carroll Lion's Club. As a Lion's Club member he was proud to be involved in the acquisition of land that was later donated to the Mt. Carroll School District for their athletic field.
Tom will be dearly missed by his wife, Virginia Fritz of Mt. Carroll; four sons, Jerry (Lynne) Fritz of Galesburg, James (Mickey) Fritz of Shannon, Jack Fritz of Mt. Carroll and Larry (Christy) Fritz of Mt. Carroll; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a brother, Ronald Fritz of Mt. Carroll. Both parents and a sister, Ruby Stiles, precede Tom in death.

Leonard Lee Kosier
Leonard Lee Kosier age 81, of Savanna passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa.

Leonard was born on January 21, 1925, the son of Frank and Mary (Thulen) Kosier. Leonard attended Savanna School's. Leonard married Roberta Law. Roberta passed away on October 29, 1987.
Leonard worked as a painter of homes for many years and he also worked for John Deere. He was a long time member of the American Legion in Savanna. Leonard enjoyed fishing, morel mushroom hunting, and spending time with his family and dog "Baby".
Leonard is survived by his son, Bob (Sherri) Law of Savanna; his daughter Selene Seiler, of Byron; a sister Bernice Shackelford, of Savanna; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
His parents; his wife, Roberta; a special friend, Irene Kullman; two brothers, Paul and LeRoy Kosier; and his sister Vivian Mullin, precede Leonard in death.

Dale William Service
Dale William Service, age 76, of Hanover died Thursday, November 9, 2006 at the Galena Stauss Nursing Home, Galena.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2006 at the Hanover United Methodist Church. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Friends may call from 6-8:00 p.m. Sunday, November 12 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Memorials may be made in Dale's name. Dale was born Friday, April 30, 1930 in Spaulding, the son of James and Nancy America (Haile) Service. He married Margaret Wild on April 29, 1973 in Galena. Dale worked as a manufacturing engineer for Eaton Corporation in Carol Stream and in Hanover. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing with friends. Dale loved to grill-out for his family and friends, he always had a good story. He was a member of the Hanover United Methodist Church and the Eaton Management Club.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Margaret Service of Hanover; four sons, Dale Glen Service of Levittown, Pennsylvania, Dallas Ray (Jaul) Service of Carbondale, Douglas Lavern (Pam) Service of Fairfield and Donald Lee Service of Springerton; four daughters, Christine Ruth Skiwrka of Aurora, Carla Deanne (Randy) Birtles of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cheryl Kay Service of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Kathleen Margaret (Tony) Benavides of Clinton, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Chester (Mildred) Service of Dover, Arkansas and David (Kathleen) Service of McHenry; and one sister, Betty (James) Bumgarner of Groveland, Florida.
His parents; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Julia; four brothers, John, James Jr., Clifford and Lester; two sisters, Violet Barcus and Margaret Englehart, precede Dale in death.

Florence Fitzpatrick Wolfe
Florence Fitzpatrick Wolfe, age 90, of Los Altos, California and formerly of Savanna passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2006 at Los Altos Sub Acute and Rehab Center, Los Altos, California.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Florence was born April 27, 1916, the daughter of Blaine and Bertha (Hatfield) Fitzpatrick in Savanna. She attended Savanna schools. Florence married Harry Wolfe on January 19, 1935. Harry passed away in 1978. Florence and Harry lived most of their lives in Savanna and operated the Schuyler Dairy. Florence was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and very involved with the church. She was also involved in many activities with the Savanna School system.
Florence will be dearly missed by two daughters, Patricia Vorreiter of Sunnyvale, California and Sally Gordon of Rye, New York; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her husband; four brothers and four sisters, precede Florence in death.

Harriet Bickelhaupt
Harriet Bickelhaupt, 90, of Mt. Carroll, died Friday, December 24, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, Reverend Mark Harkness officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitations were from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home.
Harriet was born August 6, 1914 in Chicago, the daughter of Arthur and Evelyn (Hammond) Owen. She graduated from Mt. Carroll High School, Class of 1932 and Francis Shimer Junior College. Harriet married Glenn Bickelhaupt on September 4, 1939 in Oregon; Glen died on March 13, 1977.
At the age of six, Harriet moved to Mt. Carroll to be raised by her grandmother, Julia Hammond. Following her graduation from school, Harriet taught in rural county schools and was a remedial reading teacher in the Mt. Carroll School District. Harriet was also the secretary of the Community Consolidated District #60 at Center Hill for many years.
Harriet was a member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church. She was a 50-year member of Isabel Chapter No. 322 Order of Eastern Star and past President of the Carroll County Republican Women's Club. Harriet was also a Charter Member of the American Hereford Auxiliary and a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American RevolutionCarroll Chapter.
Harriet enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her two grandchildren. She also liked playing bridge, reading, knitting, and traveling.
Harriet will be deeply missed by one son, Charlie (Arlene) Bickelhaupt of Mt. Carroll; two grandchildren, John (Julie) Bickelhaupt and Jane (Randall) Adolph of Mt. Carroll; and five great-grandchildren, Trevor, Haley, and Ty Bickelhaupt and Tessa and Nicole Adolph. Her husband, parents, grandparents, two brothers, William and John Owen; and a sister, Rosamond Owen, precede Harriet in death.

John Kilpatrick
John Kilpatrick, 56, former principal and teacher at Mt. Carroll High School, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at Wyndcrest Nursing Facility, Clinton, Iowa, following complications from lung cancer.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2004 at SS. John and Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Visitations will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 29 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in John's name.
The son of David and Marion (Dresser) Kilpatrick, John grew up on a farm just outside Hanover. After graduating from Hanover High School in 1966, he attended Northern Illinois University and became a member of the Beta Phi Gamma fraternity while earning a degree in Social Studies Education. He later went on to earn a Master's Degree in Administrative Science from Loras College.
John married Beverly Delury on December 27, 1969 and the two moved back to their hometown for John to begin his career in education at Hanover High School. Among the first students in his Social Studies, History, and Audio/Video classes were his younger brother and his sister-in-law, but he managed to get through those years unscathed. John was also Hanover's athletic director during his 1970-1983 tenure.
In 1983 he accepted a position as Junior/Senior High School Principal in Mt. Carroll, and remained in that capacity until he returned to the classroom in 1993. Serving, also, as athletic director and student council sponsor, John worked to create a strong sense of athletic and academic pride at MCHS. One of his final acts as principal was a well-executed "high five" to his son on graduation day. His career ended in 2001 when he retired as principal of the Alden-Hebron School District in Hebron, IL.
John is survived by one son, Ryan (Jenny Hoobler) Kilpatrick; two brothers, Thomas (Julie) Kilpatrick and Robert (Chris) Kilpatrick; four nieces, and two nephews. His parents and one sister, Helen Ann Kilpatrick, precede John in death.
Known for his love of teaching, his easy rapport with students, his deep golfing tan, and his incredibly bad one-liners, he leaves the legacy of so many departed educators: He has affected eternity; no one can tell where his influence will stop.

Robert Ross Potter
Robert Ross Potter, age 82, of Elizabeth, died Monday, February 13, 2006 at home.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover. Burial was in the Elizabeth Cemetery, Elizabeth. Visitations were held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2006 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth. A Memorial fund has been established in Robert's name. Robert was born January 30, 1924 in Hanover Township, the son of Ross and Ione (Ehredt) Potter. He attended the Black Country School and graduated from Hanover High School, Class of 1942. On June 26, 1950, Robert married Shirley Vandervate at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover.
Robert farmed near Rodden, rural Elizabeth. He was a 30-year Trustee for Elizabeth Township, a former member and past President of the Elizabeth School Board and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Church Council. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking; most of all Robert loved and enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren.
Robert will be deeply missed by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Dennis (Phyllis) Potter of Stockton and Duane (Terri) Potter of Elizabeth; six grandchildren, Robert (Becky) Potter of Pearl City, Jennifer (Jason) Barklow of Pearl City, Troy Potter of Woodridge, and Niel, Blake and Cory Potter, all of Elizabeth; three great grandchildren, Randy Potter, Brent and Burgundy Barklow; and two sisters, Arletta (Gene) Maeder of Galena, and Alberta Mercer of Massbach. Both parents and a brother in-law, Keith Mercer, precede Robert in death.
