Wilbur H. Klein
SHANNON -- Wilbur H. Klein, 66, of Shannon, formerly of Savanna, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.
He was born Jan. 26, 1938 in Taft Township, Taylor County, Wis., the son of Julius and Eleanor (Westaby) Klein. Wilbur and Marcia Barker were married April 16, 1971 in Mount Carroll.
He attended Savanna High School and served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division where he completed Jump School.
Mr. Klein worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, and retired from Metform Co. in Savanna.
He enjoyed woodworking, day trips, working on cars, designing things, sewing and his grandchildren.
Wilbur H. Klein is survived by his wife; one son, Lyle Eric (Lorilei) Klein of Carthage; one daughter, Deanna Louise (Eric) Deal of Freeport; five grandchildren, Erick Klein, Nick Klein, Chloe Klein, Hunter Deal and Hannah Deal, and another grandchild soon to be born; one sister, Ruth (Robert) Wilson of Savanna; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Albert and Robert; and one sister, Clara.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon. Burial will be at Brethren Cemetery in Shannon. A memorial fund has been established.
Arrangements were made by Hermann Funeral Home.

Walter Larson Jr.
FREEPORT -- Walter Larson Jr., 79, of Freeport died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
He was born Oct. 12, 1924 in Winslow, the son of Walter McKinley and Irene (Van Matre) Larson.
Mr. Larson was a firefighter for the City of Freeport from Jan. 15, 1953 to Jan. 1, 1975.
During World War II, he served with the 14th Division of the U.S. Marine Corps. He received the Purple Heart from wounds received in Saipan. He was discharged from the Marines on Dec. 12, 1945.
Survivors include his daughter, Suzanne Mansheim of Freeport and his granddaughter, Kelly Rose of Los Angeles.
Preceding him in death were his second wife, Deanne Andreen Larson on Dec. 5, 2004; his father, Walter Larson; his mother and stepfather, Irene and Roy Schadewaldt; and his son, Walter John Larson.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum in Freeport.
Arrangements were completed by Schwarz Funeral Home.

Timothy J. Schirmer
FREEPORT -- Timothy John Schirmer, 56, of Freeport died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.
He was born July 22, 1948, in Freeport, the son of George and Mary Margaret (Scheidt) Schirmer. On Oct. 9, 1971, Tim and Patricia K. Harring were married in Freeport.
He was a graduate of Aquin High School, Highland Community College and Northern Illinois University.
Mr. Schirmer was an insurance broker and teacher at Aquin High School. He enjoyed caning chairs and collecting antiques.
His memberships included St. Mary Catholic Church and Aquin Boosters.
Surviving Timothy J. Schirmer are his wife, Patricia K. Schirmer of Freeport; his mother, Mary Margaret Schirmer of Freeport; his children, Sarah (Paul) Mullen of Fort Madison, Iowa, Katra Schirmer (Philip Thompson) of Vine Grove, Ky., and Eric (Julie) Schirmer of New Lenox; his grandchildren, Anna and Joshua Mullen of Fort Madison; his brothers, Michael (Toni) Schirmer of Shillington, Pa., and David (Dawn) Schirmer of Pearl City; his sister, Laurie (Thomas) Carpenter of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his father, George H. Schirmer Jr., and his brother, George H. Schirmer III.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Burt H. Absalon officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Schwarz Funeral Home where a Scripture service will begin at 2 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established in his name for Aquin High School.

Mary Lou Stambaugh
FREEPORT -- Mary Lou Stambaugh, 76, of Freeport died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Center.
She was born Jan. 23, 1928, in Freeport, the daughter of Earvin and Marian (Deibel) Krogull. On Dec. 27, 1950, Mary Lou and Ozzie Stambaugh were married in Freeport
Mrs. Stambaugh was the activity director at Stephenson County Senior Center for 16 years. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and was president of the St. Thomas Ladies Guild and STARS of the church.
She graduated from Aquin Central Catholic High School in 1946 and attended Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa until 1948.
Mrs. Stambaugh was president of the Dental Association of Freeport, Ladies of the Elks and Civic Garden Club. She served as co-chairman of the bicentennial balls of Freeport. In addition, she held a membership with the League of Women Voters and was an active volunteer at the YWCA, St. Joseph Home, United Way, the STAR group at Freeport High School and the church.
Mary Lou enjoyed traveling, shopping, flower arranging and spending time with friends.
Surviving family members include her husband; one daughter, Lou Ann (Ronald Hayes) of Chicago; and brother, Jack (Venita) Krogull of Freeport.
Her parents died previously. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Monsignor P. William McDonnell officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. Monday to time of service at the church. The rosary will be said at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.

E. Stanley Waller Jr.
KENMORE, N.Y. -- Emerson Stanley Waller Jr., 55, of Kenmore, N.Y., a carpenter, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in Pennsylvania.
He was born Sept. 28, 1948, in Hayden, Colo., the son of Emerson Stanley Waller Sr. and Marie Jones Anderson. On March 4, 2000, Stan and Deb Wyszkowski were married at Grace Episcopal Church in Freeport.
Stan grew up in northwestern Illinois and graduated from Freeport High School in 1967. He moved to New York in 2002.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Deb of Kenmore; daughter, Eileen (Leonard) Daugherty of Scottsdale, Ariz.; son, Bradley Waller of Iowa; granddaughter, Ashley Daugherty, and grandson, Benjamin Daugherty, both of Scottsdale; stepdaughter, Christina of Kenmore; stepfather, Bill Anderson of Freeport; sisters, Marian Lewis of California, Marlene (Frank) Edmund of Stockton, Pamela Waller and Carol Waller, both of Freeport; sister-in-law, Judy Bryan; brothers, Charles Bryan of California and Donald Bryan of Phoenix; nieces, Kari Olson of Stockton, Heather (Dave) Redmore of Freeport, Amanda (Brian) Mitchell of Freeport, Jacquelyn (Jeremy) Rogers of Lena and Danielle (Chad Hornung) Rogers of Lena; nephews, Jon (Terri) Olson of Stockton and Troy (Susan) Olson of Pennsylvania; and many more nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, aunts and uncles.
Preceding him in death were his parents; grandparents; two brothers, Vernon E. Bryan and William G. Bryan; and a daughter, Melinda, in infancy.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at Grace Episcopal Church.

Gilbert A. Wastel
MONROE, Wis. -- Gilbert A. "Gib" Wastel, age 87, of Monroe, Wis., died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at The Monroe Clinic Hospital.
Gilbert was born Dec. 8, 1916 in Shawano, Wis., the son of Andrew and Louise (Maltzahn) Wastel. Gilbert and Margaret Bohm were married on June 10, 1939, in Shawano.
He graduated from Shawano High School and attended Oshkosh State Teachers College.
Mr. Wastel worked as a store manager for Montgomery Ward for 30 1/2 years while living in Shawano, Iron Mountain, Mich., Madison, Wis., and Freeport. Following his retirement, he worked for LeBaron and Ruckman Furniture in Freeport for 19 years.
Gilbert and Margaret have resided in Monroe since 1989.
He was a member of Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church of Monroe.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Wastel of Monroe; a daughter, Char (Ron) Stouffer of Waddams Grove; three grandsons, Shad (Paula) Stouffer of Waddams Grove, Shane (Cathy) Stouffer of Winslow and Shawn (Holly) Stouffer of Cedarville; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Leona Krause and Arlene Frailing; and his brother, Lawrence Wastel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Newcomer Funeral Home, 1329 31st Ave., Monroe.
Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established in Gilbert's name.

G. Nelda Zipse
ADELINE -- G. Nelda Zipse, 89, of Adeline, a resident of Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Forreston. Visitation will be from noon to time of service at the church.
A memorial fund has been established.
Arrangements are pending at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston.

Earl G. Brandenburg
STOCKTON -- Earl G. Brandenburg, 84, of Stockton died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
He was born Nov. 13, 1919, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of John and Clara (Fanger) Brandenburg. He married Dorothy Smith on June 16, 1943, in Lanark. She died Jan. 1, 1984.
Earl was a boiler man at the Kraft Whey Plant for 25 years and farmed near Stockton.
He is survived by one son, Doug Brandenburg of Stockton; two daughters, Donna Ball of Gahanna, Ohio, and Earlene (Richard) Vondran of Freeport; five grandchildren, Teresa Ball of Ohio, Tim Ball of Ohio, Tracy, Tiffany and Tara Vondran of Freeport; two sisters, Geneva (Ed) Meadows of Grand Mound, Iowa, and Evelyn Brandenburg of Mount Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, Erve, Vernon, Leonard and Raymond; and one sister, Rozella.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hermann Funeral Home in Stockton. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established.

Margaret L. Kilker
GERMAN VALLEY -- Margaret L. "Peggy" Kilker, 93, of German Valley died Saturday morning, Aug. 21, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Center in Freeport.
Born April 16, 1911, in German Valley, she was the daughter of J.R. and Ella (Poppen) Hayunga. She graduated from Pleasant Prairie Academy in 1929 and attended Northern Illinois Teacher's College. Peggy married Glenn Kilker on May 18, 1935, in Aplington, Iowa. She taught in the public schools in Stephenson and Ogle counties.
Peggy was an active member of Silver Creek Reformed Church and taught Sunday school.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth (Bill) Jewell of German Valley; grandsons, Mark Jewell of German Valley, and Matt (Jennifer) Jewell of Metamora; and a great-granddaughter, Margaret "Maggie" Jewell of Metamora.
She was predeceased by her husband, Glenn Kilker, on June 2, 1989.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Silver Creek Church, 325 S. Bunker Hill Road, German Valley, with the Rev. Randall Knoll officiating. Burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery, German Valley.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of service Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.
The family was assisted by Genandt Funeral Home, 145 Church St., German Valley.

Dorothy A. Valkema
FREEPORT -- Dorothy A. Valkema, 95, of Freeport died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Parkview Home.
Born Sept. 22, 1908, in Lanark, she was the daughter of William and Catherine (Orth) Kloepping. On March 14, 1929, Dorothy married Harold Valkema in Chicago. Mr. Valkema preceded her in death in April 1983.
Dorothy was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, the Women's fellowship and EES Circle. She also was a member of Scottish Rite Women's Club.
Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, and she was always known for her wonderful smile.
Surviving are two sons, Quentin E. (JoAnne) and Donald F. (Norma) Valkema, both of Freeport; one daughter, Carol (Stanley E.) Smith of Freeport; one brother, Lloyd (Marilynn) Kloepping of Lanark; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Her parents; husband; two brothers; five sisters; one great-grandson; and her daughter in-law, Ann Valkema, preceded her in death.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John United Church of Christ with the Rev. Donnley Dutcher officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Walker Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for St. John United Church of Christ Scholarship Fund.

Warren E. Michles
EGAN -- Warren E. Michles, 61, of Egan died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at home.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Seward Congregational Church, Seward. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Genandt Funeral Home in Winnebago.
A memorial fund has been established.

Gregory Wakenight
POLO -- Gregory A. Wakenight, 57, of Polo died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004.
Arrangements are pending at Benson-Brown-Seidel Funeral Home.

Alice L. Wagner
FREEPORT -- Alice L. Wagner, 89, of Freeport died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at Provena St. Joseph Center.
Born April 14, 1915, in Freeport, she was the daughter of John and Amelia (Miller) Oberem. Alice married Paul Wagner on July 30, 1938, in Davenport, Iowa. Mr. Wagner died in February 1989.
Alice worked for Fairbanks-Morse and then Burgess Battery until her retirement in 1978.
She was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ.
Surviving are her son, Thomas P. (Jan) Wagner of Freeport; and two grandchildren, Lindsay and Joshua Wagner of Freeport.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, George Oberem, and one sister, Mildred Raih.
Cremation rites have been accorded and private services will be held. Internment of her cremated remains will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for St. John United Church of Christ.
