Paul Carter
January 24, 2004
GALESBURG - Paul Carter, 72, 533 N. Whitesboro, died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 22, 2004), in University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa.
He was born March 20, 1931, in California, the son of E. J. and Doris Carter McCargar.
He married Rishey Barton in 1976, in Lovelock, Nev.
Surviving are his wife; his mother, Doris Carter of Nevada; one son, Paul Carter, Galesburg; two brothers, Edward McCargar and David McCargar, both of Nevada; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an adopted son, David, and one brother.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He worked as a pipefitter/plumber out of Local 350 in Sparks, Nev., for 45 years. Upon retirement, he moved to Galesburg in 1988.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, and served as a foster parent for several years in Knox County.
Cremation will be accorded. A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 31 at Faith United Methodist Church. Burial will be later in Nevada. Watson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Catton, June A.
June 3, 2004
GALESBURG - June Anne Catton, 77, Galesburg, died at 8:33 p.m. Wednesday (June 2, 2004), in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Brimfield, the daughter of Rex and Violet Moline Stutler.
Surviving are one son, Dennis C. Catton, Riverside, Calif.; a longtime companion, Everett Howe, Galesburg; one brother, Bernard Stutler in England; two stepsisters, Dorothy Ericson, Galva, and Betty Youngstrom, Cambridge; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one son.
She had lived in Brimfield; Orange County, Calif.; and in Galesburg the past 12 years.
She retired from the State of California as secretary for the Employment Development Department.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Patterson Funeral Home, Elmwood, with the Rev. Sharon Treptow officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brimfield Cemetery.

Richard Cecil
October 3, 2003
CASPER, Wyo. - Richard "Rich" Cecil, 42, Casper, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003), at home.
He was born Feb. 20, 1961, in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Joseph Leon and Sandra Lou Phillips Cecil.
He married Shari Frankfurth on Oct. 6, 1990, in Casper.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Kristin Cecil at home; a stepson, Damon Frankfurth at home; his mother, Sandy (and Rick) Steffen, Fort Madison, Iowa; his father of Galesburg; a grandmother, Waneitta Phillips, Fort Madison; a brother, Phillip Cecil, Gillette; a sister, Susan Kottenstette, Fort Madison; four nephews; two nieces; an uncle; and five aunts. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, his paternal grandparents and an aunt.
He was raised and educated in Galesburg and attended Western Iowa Tech, Sioux City, Iowa.
He worked in the oil industry in Casper.
He was a member of Lord of Lords Lutheran Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Lord of Lords Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Phil Spaude officiating. Cremation was accorded and his ashes will be scattered with those of his grandfather in the Big Horn Mountains near Steamboat Rock. Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Casper, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to a college fund for his daughter or to his church.

Chapman, Kathryn
May 8, 2004
CANYON, Texas - Kathryn Chapman, 81, formerly of Hereford, Texas, died Thursday (May 6, 2004), in Conner Nursing Home, Canyon.
She was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Galesburg, the daughter of Walter and Carrie Mathers.
She married John P. "Jack" Chapman on Feb. 14, 1943. He died March 21, 1991.
Surviving are a son, David Chapman, Canyon; three daughters, Kit Saling, Stockton, Calif., Gretchen Mandel, Milwaukee, Wis., and Ann Timney, Flagstaff, Ariz.; a brother, Max Mathers, Knoxville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She graduated from Knoxville High School and attended Monmouth College.
She lived for 18 years in Yuma, Ariz., where she attended Trinity Methodist Church. She was a lay witness in churches in California and Arizona. After serving a mission term in South America and Panama, she returned to Hereford, Texas, where she taught Bible classes and wrote a book, "Life Line."
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Hereford Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Ted Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Rest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Hereford. Parkside Chapel Funeral Home, Hereford, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Gideon Memorial Bibles or Hereford Senior Citizens, 426 Ranger, Hereford, TX 79045.

Chezem, Edith D.
April 30, 2004
MONMOUTH - Edith D. Chezem, 81, Monmouth, died at 4:20 p.m. Thursday (April 29, 2004) in Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
She was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Millersburg, the daughter of Sidney and Elsie (Whittaker) Baker
She married Loyd E. Chezem on May 4, 1942, in Palmyra, Mo. He died Aug. 25, 1992.
Surviving are three daughters, Sandra (and Tom) Dean and Ann Miller, both of Monmouth, and Connie (and Jerry) Prewitt, Maumelle, Ark.; a son, Brian Chezem, Monmouth; a brother, Robert (and Inez) Barker, Aledo; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.
She was reared and educated in Mercer County.
She and her husband ran a restaurant from 1969 to 1979 in Pocahontas, Ark. They moved to Monmouth in 1990.
She was a member of the Monmouth VFW Auxiliary.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. James Epperson officiating. Visitation is Sunday with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m. at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital.

Childers, Jeremy C.
December 3, 2003
RIO - Jeremy Clayton Childers, 19, 419 E. Center Ave., died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003), at home.
He was born Jan. 10, 1984, in Galesburg, the son of Jeffrey C. and Alice S. Beaird Childers.
Surviving are his parents of Rio; a brother, Justin David Childers, Rio; his grandparents, James McMillion, Kileen, Texas, and Ron and Donna Childers, Galesburg; his great-grandmother, Harriet Rusk, Galesburg; aunts and uncles, Debbie and Larry Krissinger, Radcliff, Ky., and Ronda and Mike Knuth and Mark and Susan Childers, all of Galesburg; great-aunts, great-uncles and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Barbra McMillion, and grandfather, Charles J. Beaird.
He was a 2002 graduate of ROWVA High School, where he was active in FFA, was in the marching band for two years, and lettered in football and track. He was attending Carl Sandburg College.
He worked in the produce department for the Henderson Street HyVee store for the past three years.
He went through the AWANA Youth Program at Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg; and was in Cub Scouts Pack 123 in Rio and Boy Scouts Troop 207 in Galesburg.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Kirk Kendall officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
Memorials may be made to the family.

Chivers, John G.
April 11, 2004
ORLAND HILLS - John George Chivers, 47, died Friday (April 9, 2004) in Geneseo.
He was born Aug. 11, 1956, in Aurora, the son of Jack and Sally Chivers.
He married Beverly Schmidt.
Surviving are his wife; his mother of Galesburg; three sisters, Teresa (and Jeff) Litchfield, Galesburg, Vicki (and Craig) Stevens and Dawn (and Roy) Swenson; two brothers, Bill (and Gwen) Chivers and Michael (and Angie) Chivers; two sisters-in-law, Dolores Schmidt and Diedre Slutz; and nieces and nephews.
He was a Navy veteran.
He worked at William Wrigley Jr. Co. for 18 years.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in All Saints Lutheran Church, Orland Park. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Colonial Chapel and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Christianson, Mary K.
August 16, 2003
ALEXIS - Mary Kathryn Christianson, 63, Alexis, died at 10 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) in Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.
She was born June 18, 1940, in Galesburg, the daughter of Sam and Irene (Johnston) Meeker.
She married Curtis E. Christianson on Oct. 1, 1966, in North Henderson.
Surviving are her husband; her mother of Alexis; a daughter, Julie (and Todd) Davison, Geneseo; a son, Scott (and Tricia) Christianson, Little York; two grandchildren; a brother, Bill (and Kay) Meeker, North Henderson; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.
She was reared and educated in Alexis. She graduated from Alexis High School in 1958 and from Cottage Hospital School of Nursing in 1961.
She was a homemaker and registered nurse for 42 years, working at Highland Park Hospital, Nutri-System and Dr. Palmer's office in Aledo. She also was a courier nurse for Sante Fe Railroad.
She was a member of Norwood United Presbyterian Church and PEO Chapter of Alexis.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Norwood United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Christine Bailey officiating. Friends may call after noon Sunday at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth; family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to her church and PEO Chapter of Alexis.

Cills, Richard J.

KNOXVILLE - Richard J. Cills, 61, 215 N. West St., died at 4 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 26, 2004) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital of natural causes.
Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville, is in charge of arrangements.

Clark, Walter E.
January 4, 2004
EAST MOLINE - Walter E. "Judge" Clark, 81, East Moline, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at home.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday in Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd. Further arrangements are pending at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to his church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, East Moline.

Clark, Geneva
September 21, 2003
GALESBURG - Geneva Clark 69, 881 W. Main St., died at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Sept. 18, 1933, in Caruthersville, Mo., the daughter of Roy E. and Addie Macon Bess.
She married Edward Clark on July 5, 1958, in Galesburg. He died July 13, 1998.
Surviving are her mother, Addie B. Bess, Galesburg; two sons, Charles E. (and Deborah) Clark, Albers, and Robert Clark, Pontiac; two daughters, Martha K. (and Eddie) Thompson, Sebastian, Fla., and Kimberly Clark, Peoria; two brothers, William L. (and Arie) Bess, St. Charles, Mo., and John W. (Paris) Bess, Galesburg; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father one sister and one brother.
She was a homemaker, licensed day care provider and a foster parent. She was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church, where she served as a steward and a Sunday school teacher.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Allen Chapel AME Church. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fletcher and McDougald Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Garden Cemetery.
