Hempfing, George E.
February 12, 2004
GALESBURG - George E. "Elvis" Hempfing, 66, 311 Illinois Ave., died at 3:07 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 11, 2004) at home.
He was born Nov. 3, 1937, in Chicago, the son of Carl and Ellen Gould Hempfing.
He married Beverly Jean Swanson on Aug. 5, 1972 in Galesburg.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Tammy Hempfing, Galesburg; and two grandchildren.
He lived most of his life in Galesburg and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1956.
He served in the National Guard with the 123rd Field Artillery.
He worked at Maytag Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and attended Hope Wesleyan Church.
Funeral will be noon Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Brian Sexton officiating. Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the Autism Foundation or any charity.

Leo A. Hennenfent
September 19, 2003
GALESBURG - Leo A. Hennenfent, 77, 3370 N. Seminary St., died at 6:25 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 30, 1925, in Galesburg, the son of Joseph I. and Anna Gertrude Fogarty Hennenfent.
He married Shirley Cunningham on Sept. 30, 1944, in Galesburg.
Surviving are his wife; six sons, Michael L. (and Judy) Hennenfent, Gilson, John A. (and Holly) Hennenfent, Galesburg, Daniel (and Marcy) Hennenfent, Ottawa, Robert (and Christine) Hennenfent, Wataga, Patrick (and Kimberly) Hennenfent, Wataga, and Jeffrey (and Merris) Hennenfent, Galesburg; four daughters, Margaret "Peg" Hannam, Galesburg, Mary Kay (and Mark) Ebert, Kewanee, Constance (and James) Smith, Gilson, and Rebecca (and Larry) Conley, Clinton, Iowa; two brothers, Joseph "Bud" Hennenfent, New Windsor, and John "Jack" Hennenfent, Cameron; two sisters, Jolyne Castle and Rozella O'Connor; 26 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two granddaughters and a great-granddaughte.
He graduated from Soperville School.
He farmed near Galesburg until retiring.
He was a charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, served on the original church council and was head usher and extraordinary minister.
He was elected to the Knox County Board in 1982, retiring in 2002. He chaired the Knox County Nursing Home Committee for several years and also chaired the Jail and Sheriff's, Highway and Landfill committees. He served on the Knox County Farm Bureau Board, representing Henderson and Sparta townships for several years.
He was a member of the Costa School Board, organized and served on the Wataga Youth Baseball Board and was a member of the Cosmopolitan Service Club International for 45 years, serving in all offices.
He served on the Red Cross Board and was a 15-gallon donor. He was a volunteer fireman for the Henderson Township Fire Department. He was active in replacing the Wolf Covered Bridge. He was a member of the Prime Timers of the Knox County Farm Bureau and was a leader of Henderson Aggies 4-H Club.
He helped form Prairie Drifters Snowmobile Club and was an active member for 32 years. He served on the Knox County Teen Court Board.
He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Watson Funeral Home, with the rosary recited at 3 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to his church and the Leo A. Hennenfent Memorial Fund, which supports Knox County 4-H, Teen Court and the Knox County Nursing Home.

Robert L. Hensley
July 29, 2003
PEORIA - Robert L. Hensley, 74, Peoria, died at 1:47 a.m. Saturday (July 26, 2003) in Rosewood Care Center, Peoria.
He was born July 9, 1929, in Peoria, the son of Leland and Alice Dinquel Hensley.
He married Patsy Ruth Rein on Nov. 1, 1951, in Peoria.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Laurie Hensley, Peoria, Judy Taylor, Galesburg, and Rebecca (and Greg) Timke, Pekin; four sons, Les (and Diana) Hensley, East Peoria, Ted Hensley and David (and Mike Flanagan) Hensley, both of Peoria, and Ronald (and Valerie) Hensley, Chillicothe; a brother, Dale (and Lynn) Hensley, Chillicothe; eight grandchildren; three nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He worked as a technical machinist at Caterpillar for 40 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of First English Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 1, was a troop leader of Boy Scout Troop 239 and pack leader of Cub Scout Pack 155, and was active in Cursillo.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Cumerford-Endsley-Diggle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. James R. Lillie officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America.

Ronny L. Hepner
October 29, 2003
GALVA - Ronny L. Hepner, 58, Galva, died Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
He died from injuries he received in a traffic accident Saturday.
He was born Nov. 30, 1944, in Kewanee, the son of Harvey and Nina Opalka Hepner.
He married Karen Murphy on Aug. 19, 1988, in Davenport, Iowa.
Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Nicole (and David) Swift, Erie; a son, Troy (and Susan) Stairwalt, Madison, Wis.; his mother of Galva; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, a sister, a brother and a great-nephew.
He was educated in Bishop Hill and Galva.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served as an Airborn Ranger and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He worked 29 years at the Galva Foundry, then worked at Blackhawk Foundry in the Quad Cities and at Excelled Sheepskin and Leather in Kewanee.
He had competed in drag racing as a partner in the Carlson-Hepner Racing Team.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Galva Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Kewanee, with military honors by the Galva Fusiliers.
Memorials may be made to the Ronny Hepner Memorial Fund.

Hickman, Bessie L.
January 12, 2004
SHERRARD - Bessie Louise Hickman, 95, formerly of Sherrard, died Sunday (Jan. 11, 2004), in the Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.
She was born April 8, 1908, in Sherrard, the daughter of William and Lenora Jones Garrett Krebs.
She married Richard Woodrow Hickman on May 28, 1938, in Davenport. He died Aug. 18, 2002.
Surviving are one son, Jeffrey (and Betty) Hickman, Sherrard; one sister, Katie Maier, Moline; one brother, Jack (and Evelyn) Krebs, Milan; one sister-in-law, Bonnie Krebs, Rock Island; two grandsons; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and six brothers.
She worked on the assembly line at the former Servus Rubber Company in Rock Island for 13 years. She also worked as a telephone operator in the Central Office at the former Sherrard Phone Company and had previously been employed as a clerk in the grocery store in Sherrard.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Sherrard.
Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, Sherrard. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. in Orion. Burial will be in the Preemption Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the First Lutheran Church of Sherrard.

Hicks, David N. Sr.
July 30, 2004
HUNTLEY - David N. Hicks Sr., 75, Huntley, formerly of Galesburg, died July 9, 2004, from complications due to lung cancer.
He was born June 8, 1929, in Galesburg.
Surviving are two sons, David Hicks Jr. and Philip Hicks; a daughter, Leslie Peot; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona.
He and his wife lived most of their lives in Galesburg, and he was a conductor for 41 years for the C.B.&Q. and later Burlington Northern Railroad.
There will be no funeral services. A service for family and friends is being planned.

Hills, Lois E.
October 7, 2003
COAL VALLEY -Lois E. Hills, 89, formerly of Coal Valley, died Monday (Oct. 6, 2003) in Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.
She was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Marston, the daughter of Edward and Dora Winegard Mayhew.
She married James M. Hills on June 25, 1948, in Seaton. He died July 25, 1986.
Surviving are a son, Wendell (and Sherrill) Hills, Lynn Center; two daughters, Ruth (and John) Spibey, Cherry Valley, and Carol (and Richard) Nichols, Alpha; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers.
She taught school for 27 years in Mercer County, Moline and Orion, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of First Congregational Church, Moline, and its Friendship Guild and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She had been a 4-H and Cub Scout leader.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Trimble Funeral Home, Moline, where visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Hamlet Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research or Rock Island County Extension Service for 4-H.

Hillyer, Ray D.
July 28, 2003
WARSAW, Mo. - Ray D. Hillyer, 46, Warsaw, Mo., died Thursday (July 24, 2003) in Boone Hospital Center, Columbia, Mo.
He was born March 26, 1957, in Macomb, the son of Dale and Blanche Weaver Hillyer.
He married Phyllis J. Craig on April 2, 1984.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Dustin; three brothers, Randy, Rex and Gregg; a half-sister; nine stepchildren, Beth, Rebecca, Barbara, Paulette, Chris, Ray, Loretta, Teri and Cindi; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He worked at Clow Valve in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Graveside services were Sunday in Friendship Cemetery near Crawford, Mo., with Fritz Gerth officiating. Gerth Funeral Home, Memphis, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the family.

Hinchliff, Joan
April 28, 2004
GALESBURG - Joan Hinchliff, 82, 155 N. Prairie St., died at 9 a.m. Tuesday (April 27, 2004) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Galesburg, the daughter of Ray Woodman and Dorothy Zearing Hinchliff.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Joyce Hinchliff, Galesburg, and a niece. She was preceded in death by a brother.
She graduated from Galesburg High School and from Knox College in 1943.
She was director of personnel at Continental Bank in Chicago for 35 years and worked at WAIK radio in Galesburg for several years. She was night receptionist at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel for 10 years.
Private services will be Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Vincent Peters officiating. No visitation is planned. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Knox College.

Edna M. Hodge
July 29, 2003
GALESBURG - Edna M. Hodge, 80, Galesburg, formerly of Williamsfield, died at 6:43 p.m. Sunday (July 27, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Knox County, the daughter of Grover and Della Dishman George.
She married Vergle L. Hodge on Oct. 2, 1939, in Kahoka, Mo. He died June 13, 1992.
Surviving are two sons, Bradley L. (and Joyce) Hodge, Galesburg, and Philip L. Hodge, West Valley City, Utah; a sister, Wilberta "Bertie" (and Sam) Powell, Knoxville; a brother, Oliver "Gene" (and Joyce) George, Live Oaks, Fla.; a half-brother, Lester George, Coal Valley; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two half-brothers and a sister.
She was reared and educated in Knoxville, attending Knoxville High School.
She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in the Williamsfield and Dahinda areas. She moved to Galesburg in 1992.
She volunteered for the American Red Cross, Cottage Home Options and AARP.
She was of Methodist faith.
Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Knoxville Cemetery, with the Rev. Tom Heather officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Knoxville.
Memorials may be made to Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
