Inez Shields
SHANNON -- Inez Allen Shields, 84, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at Van Matre Rehabilitation Hospital in Rockford.
She was born Feb. 26, 1920 in McNabb, the daughter of Clyde and Francis (Williams) Allen. She married John Shields Jr. on March 31, 1942 in Kahoka, Mo.
She was a 1936 graduate of John Swaney Consolidated School in McNabb. She attended two years at Illinois State Teacher's College in Normal and then taught for five years at John Swaney Elementary School in McNabb.
She was a member of Park Hills Evangelical Free Church in Freeport, where she had sung in the choir. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Boyle-Hoy Post 379 in Shannon.
She enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking, crossword puzzles, singing and playing the harmonica.
Surviving are two sons, Victor (Jan) Shields of Freeport and Timothy (Rita) Shields of Duluth, Ga.; two daughters, Doctor Christine Shields of Newton, Mass., and Sandra (Jerry) Cornelius of Mount Carroll; 10 grandchildren, Karl (Marci) Shields, Monica (Frank) Percic, Jessica Shields, Abigail Shields, Stacy (Josh) Hammond, Amanda Cornelius, Michael (Christina) Shields, Anna Marie Shields, David Shields, and Rose Marie Shields; and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Hollis Bloom; and one brother, Stanley (Bud) Allen.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Park Hills Evangelical Free Church in Freeport. Burial will be at the Brethren Cemetery in Shannon.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hermann Funeral Home in Shannon.
A memorial fund has been established.

Gladys Nolan
LENA -- Gladys Nolan, 85, of Lena died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in her home.
She was born March 30, 1919 in Warren, the daughter of Fred and Margaret (Weiters) Tessendorf, and married Donald Nolan on Dec. 5, 1940 in St. John's Lutheran Church in Lena.
She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, gardening in her flower beds, playing Eucher and canning, cooking and baking for her friends.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Don; daughter, Carol (Thomas) Mau of Lena; son, Dale (Lynne) Nolan of Hayesville, NC; five grandchildren, Michelle (Mike) Rothschadl, Mark (Anita Fernstaedt) Mau, Kalyn, Eric and fiance Jerica and Nathan Nolan; five great-grandsons, Matthew and Zach Mau and Jesse, Thomas and Christopher Rothschadl; brother, Fred (Carol) Tessendorf; sister, Thelma Lutz Runkle; sisters-in law, Joyce Tessendorf of Lena and Marge Tessendorf of Monroe, Wis.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Betty Jean Tessendorf, Elma Johnson, Adeline Tessendorf, Ada Dittmar and Lenice Johnson; brothers, Henry and Oscar Tessendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rick Bader officiating.
Burial will be in Lena Burial Park.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the church.
A memorial has been established in her memory.

Charlotte M. Lamm
FREEPORT -- Charlotte M. Lamm, 91, of Freeport died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.
Born April 13, 1913 in Freeport, she was the daughter of Joachim and Johanna (Bliesath) Koester.
She married Karl Lamm on Feb. 25, 1933 in Freeport. Karl preceded her in death in 1983.
Charlotte was a graduate of Freeport High School and was employed at Reitinger Cleaners and Micro Switch, where she retired in 1978.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
She is survived by sons, Neal (Eleanor) Lamm of Rock City and Theodore (Karen) Lamm of Belleville; daughter, Charlene (Glenn) Frank of Morrison; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Fred Zumbragel of Cherry Valley.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter, Joan Zumbragel; four brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Father John Cahill will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Schwarz Funeral Home in Freeport, where the Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Heart Fund.

Elmer Nelson Pohl
FREEPORT -- Elmer Nelson Pohl, 87, of Freeport died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 20, 1916 in Kent, the son of Carl John and Maria (Shirk) Pohl, and married Doris Sadie Blair on Aug. 18, 1938 in Stockton.
He farmed for many years near Lena and drove a school bus for the Lena-Winslow and Freeport schools for 28 years until retiring in 1984.
Elmer was a member of the Van Brocklin United Methodist Church.
Survivors include sons, Harold (Sandy) Pohl and Darius (Karen) Pohl, both of Freeport; son-in-law, Jerry Staley of Apex, N.C.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Oscar (Mildred) Pohl of Lena; and three sisters, Nora Barklow, Esther Jordan and Marjorie (Ed) Moon, all of Freeport.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, on Jan. 13, 2002; daughter, Caroline Staley; parents; seven brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Van Brocklin United Methodist Church with Pastor Rodney Caldwell officiating.
Burial will be in the Lena Burial Park.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Schwarz Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established in his memory for the Van Brocklin United Methodist Church.

Alice R. Johnson
ROCKFORD -- Alice Ruth Johnson, 93, of Rockford died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Medina Nursing Center in Durand.
Services and burial will be in Arkansas.
Local arrangements by the Schwarz Funeral Home in Freeport.

Berneice Anderson
FREEPORT -- Berneice I. Anderson, 91, of Freeport died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 9, 1913, in Freeport, she was the daughter of Edward J. and Freida (Ruthe) Thomas. Berneice and Kenneth M. Anderson were married June 19, 1942. Mr. Anderson died Feb. 23, 1998.
Mrs. Anderson worked at Northwestern Telephone Company for 21 years, and then 20 years at Micro Switch, retiring in 1973.
Surviving are sisters, Betty J. (John) Mathews of Freeport, Mary (Donald) Bauch of Mount Carroll and Dorothy Lief of Freeport; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; stepdaughter; and two sisters.
Private services will be held. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that flowers and memorial donations be omitted.

Kenneth M. Fosler
FREEPORT -- Kenneth Melvin Fosler, 77, of Freeport died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 18, 1927, in Lena, the son of Charles and Blanche (Huber) Fosler. Kenneth and Shirley M. Herold were married April 30, 1949, in Rockford. Mrs. Fosler died March 20, 1991 in Freeport.
Since 1953, Mr. Fosler owned and operated South Side Window Cleaning in Freeport. He previously worked at W.T. Rawleigh Company and Fairbanks Morse.
A veteran, he served during World War II.
Surviving are his sons, Ken Fosler, Jim (Judy) Fosler and Don (Kayla) Fosler, all of Freeport; one daughter, Debbie (David) Kohlbauer of Freeport; three brothers, William (Ruth) Fosler, Dick (Lois) Fosler and Joe (Ruth) Fosler, all of Freeport; one sister, Lola Mae Janicke of Rockford; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Tom, one brother; and one sister.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Walker Mortuary with the Rev. Rex Rains, associate pastor of Crossroads Community Church officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the mortuary.
Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
A memorial fund has been established in his name for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Marjorie I. Haas
DAVIS -- Marjorie I. Haas, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, 80, of rural Davis died at 3:56 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Rockford Memorial Hospital.
She was a former Rockford resident, currently residing in rural Davis.
Marjorie was born March 27, 1924, in Ridott, the daughter of Marvin J. and Cora B. (Daughenbaugh) Canfield. She and Charles Haas were married Dec. 3, 1944, and farmed in Rock Run Township many years before moving to Rockford.
She graduated from Dakota High School in 1942.
Marjorie was a very kind, thoughtful and loving individual. She made the most of her long and happy life, leaving behind many fond memories.
Survivors include her daughter, Penny A. (Lee) Harbison of Davis; two grandchildren, Cheyanne D. (Tom) Gray of Davis and Chad (fiancee Tricia Gieske) Harbison of Belvidere; one great-granddaughter, Haley Harbison of Belvidere; one sister, Pearl Cole of Las Vegas; one niece, Cindy L. (Jerome) Nolan of Las Vegas; two grandnieces; two great-grandnieces; her godson, Nick McGee; beloved friends, including Joan Stevens and daughter, Jackie; and special friend, Cletha Daugherty.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles, who died Dec. 3, 1972; and her brother, Merle Canfield.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 115 S. West St., Dakota, with Pastor Debbie Percell of Davis Calvary United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Ridott Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Thursday to time of service at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Harry E. Johns
TAVARES, Fla. -- Harry E. Johns, a loving husband, father and grandfather, was born on Aug. 18, 1919, in Stockton to Roy and Blanche Johns. He died in Tavares, Fla., on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, just four days before his 85th birthday.
He grew up Stockton, and in 1941, wed his beloved wife of 63 years, Eileen Gage.
During World War II, he was an operative for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in the Asiatic/Pacific theater, serving in Burma, China and India. He earned numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross with three Oak Clusters, two Bronze Service Stars, an Air Medal with Clusters, and was recognized by the Emperor of China for training Chinese paratroopers.
He was a life member of the 101 Association, for the Detachment 101 of the OSS, the Kachin Rangers.
Mrs. Johns was a mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office in Stockton and Rockford before retiring in 1979. He moved to Leesburg, Fla., in 1980, residing at Mid Florida Lakes, where he was a member the golf club and boat club.
He belonged to the Universal Unitarian Church. His life's priorities were family and golf.
Harry E. Johns is survived by his wife, Eileen; son, Colin of Henderson, Nev.; daughters, Dee Ann Cedarleaf and Rae Lynn Swenson of Rockford; niece, Angie Niehoff of Lake Worth, Fla.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Evelyn Hahlen.
A memorial service will be held in September in Rockford.

Donald C. Krogull
FREEPORT -- Donald C. Krogull, 77, of Freeport died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at his home.
He was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Freeport, the son of Frank J. and Alice (Frueh) Krogull. On May 1, 1949, Donald and Vivian Stewart were married in Freeport.
Don graduated from Aquin High School in 1944, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945.
Mr. Krogull worked in the family business, Krogull's Meat Market, until 1972, and worked in real estate from 1973-2004. He earned both the CRS and GRI designations. He opened his own real estate office, Krogull and Mercier, which he operated from 1980 to 2000. He joined Barrett Inc. Realtors as the office manager.
Don was active in the Freeport, Galena Associates of Realtors, and was a past president of the organization. He was chairman of the Professional Standard and Forms committees and served on numerous local committees. He was a member of Freeport City Planning Commission until 2001, and was a member of the Elks Club and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Donald C. Krogull is survived by his wife, Vivian Krogull; daughters, Cynthia (Jon) Stafford of Roscoe, Jan (John) Bland of New Milford and Lisa (Wayne) Fetter of Freeport; two grandchildren, Jon and Megan Stafford of Roscoe; sister, Pauline A. Lasley of Freeport; and brother, James R. (Virginia) Krogull of Freeport.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Alice Krogull; and brothers, Robert C. Krogull and Frank J. Krogull Jr.
Donald was blessed by the support of friends and family throughout his illness.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Visitation hours are from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. Thursday to time of Mass on Thursday at the church. A Scripture service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his memory.

Kenneth E. Long
FREEPORT -- Kenneth E. Long, 75, of Freeport died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 28, 1929, in Lena, the son of Arthur and Edith (Weir) Long. On Feb. 12, 1950, Kenneth and Marian E. Robieson were married in Warren.
Mr. Long farmed more than 30 years in the Winslow area, then worked for Freeport School District 145.
He was an avid collector of John Deere toys and a consummate fan of the Cubs and Packers. His memberships included Eagles Club, Two-Cylinder Club and Farm Toy Collectors Club.
Surviving Kenneth E. Long are his wife, Marian; two daughters, Sherry (Jeffrey Kuhlmeyer) Brinker of Lena and Susan (Timothy) Gundrum of Wheaton; one brother, LaVerne (Lillian) Long of Monroe, Wis.; and special nephew, Wayne (Kathleen) Long of Elizabeth.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Ray and Verle Long; and two sisters, Loree Drane and Blanche Fieldsteadt.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Leamon Funeral Home in Lena with Father William Antillion officiating. Burial will be at Lena Burial Park.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
