Robert J. Winter, M.D., 52, professor of pediatrics and former associate dean for medical education at the Medical School, died Dec. 10  at his home after a long illness.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Fourth Pres- byterian Church of Chicago.
Dr. Winter received his medical degree from the Medical School. After post-graduate training, he joined the Medical School faculty in 1975 as a pediatric endocrinologist at Childrenšs Memorial Hospital.
He was named the Irene Heinz Given and John LaPorte Given Professor of Pediatrics at Childrenšs, a post he held until 1994. He also served as director of medical education at Childrenšs from 1985 to 1994.
In 1994, Dr. Winter was appointed associate dean for medical education at Medical School, serving as the Jacob Suker Professor of Medical Education. He continued to serve Childrenšs as associate chair for educational programs. He was honored with several Outstanding Clinical Teaching Awards and the Deanšs Award for Educational Leadership in 1993.
He resigned from his positions in June of this year for health reasons.
Dr. Winter was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, Society for Pediatric Research and Association of American Medical Colleges.
He was active in the American Diabetes Association (ADA), serving as president of the Northern Illinois Chapter and on the national board of directors. Last month, he was named an honorary member of the ADAšs Board of Directors for the Northern Affiliate.
Dr. Winter is survived by his wife, Willa; a son, Andrew; and a brother, Thomas Winter. The Winters were long-time residents of the near north side of Chicago before moving recently to Bloomingdale.
