Geneva S. Johnson
Geneva S. Johnson, 92, West Brown Street, Glasgow, died Monday at the NHC Health Care Center. A native of Westborne, TN, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ollie Jane Slover. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in DuQuoin, Illinois.

Survivors include one son, Joe W. Johnson and his wife, Lou Mae of Glasgow; two daughters, Phyllis McCoy of Prospect, KY and Zelma Swailes and her husband, Alan of Columbia, MO; eleven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Achsah Mitchell Johnson and one brother, Louis Slover.

Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in DuQuoin with burial in the Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation was after 12 noon Thursday at the church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Anyone wishing to do so may sign an online guest register at www.hatchersaddler.com. The Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin was in charge of local arrangements.

Betty Jean Hicks
Betty Jean Hicks, 73, of Vergennes, passed away Wednesday, March 27 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Mrs. Hicks was the owner of Modglin Grocery in Vergennes. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Vergennes.

She was born July 7, 1928 in Jackson County, the daughter of Alvie and Yula (Dutch) Ripley. She married Warren Modglin who preceded her in death in 1963. She then married Bill Hicks on June 24, 1967 in Vergennes.

Surviving are her husband, Bill Hicks of Vergennes; one daughter, Brenda Vanzandt of Fort Worth, Tex.; one son-in-law, Russ Vanzandt of DuQuoin; one Don and daughter-in-law, Keith and Ivalee Modglin of Vergennes; four grandchildren, Jason Vanzandt of DuQuoin, Jordan Vanzandt of DuQuoin, Jamie and husband Steve Valier of DuQuoin and Lana Modglin of Vergennes; two great-grandchildren, Lane Valier and Sydney Valier, both of DuQuoin; one brother, Delmar Ripley of Oreana, Ill. and three sisters, Phyllis Tripp and Cherylan Staffey, both of Murphysboro and Frances Opp of Tamaroa.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services weree Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Vergennes with Rev. Bill Wiggs officiating. Interment was in Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro.

Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pettett Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to the hour of services at the church.

Memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church.

Shane Wheatley
Shane Wheatley, 36, of Valier, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at Andy's Creek in Valier, Ill.

Mr. Wheatley worked at Orpack Stone in Herrin. He was a disabled Army veteran and spent one year in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Valier. He was also a member of D.A.V., N.R.A. and Sesser V.F.W.

He was born December 13, 1965 in DuQuoin, the son of Richard W. and Janice I. Wheatley. He married Frankie Shurtz on July 6, 1990 in Wickliffe, Ky. and she survives.

Surviving are his children, Arielle Wheatley and John Wheatley, both of Valier; father, Richard W. Wheatley; brothers, Johnnie (Cruddy Buddy) Wright of Tampa, Fla. and Jimmy Wright of Sesser; caring and loving aunts, uncles, mother in law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces & nephews, friends and their dog, Follow.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents.

Funeral services were Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m. at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Harl Ray Lewis officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill cemetery in Sesser.

Visitation was after 6 p.m. on Saturday at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser.

In lieu of flowers, donations to an educational fund for the children at the State Bank of Whittington.

Ruby Mae Bulmer
Ruby Mae Bulmer, 87, of Tamaroa, passed away at 2:09 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2002 in Rockwood, Ill.

Mrs. Bulmer had been a Beautician/Artist and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in DuQuoin.

She was born January 28, 1915 in Branson, Mo., the daughter of William and Belva (Edwards) Busse. She married Dale Bulmer on June 20, 1940 at DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on June 5, 1984. Mrs. Bulmer had lived in DuQuoin for over 80 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Sue (Cecil) Dunning of Rockwood, Ill. and June Land of Kansas City, Mo. and one brother, Dwayne Bussee of St. Louis, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter.

Cremation services were held and a private family service with Rev. Cecil Dunning officiating was held at a later date. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

There was no visitation.

Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Hymn Fund in Rockwood, Ill.

Pernie A. Keiner
Pernie A. Keiner, 86, of Du Quoin, passed away at 1:30 A.M., Monday, February 18, 2002 at the Skilled Care Unit of the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Pernie was a retired employee of Forrest City Mfg. and Country Set. She was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Du Quoin and the Women's Fellowship of the St. John's United Church of Christ.

She was born July 15, 1915 at Jackson County, IL the daughter of Luther E. and Leona M. (Russell) Higgerson.

She married Lawrence Keiner on August 5, 1950 at Du Quoin, IL he passed away January 15, 1994.

She is survived by two sisters- Clementine (Higgerson) Preston of Pinckneyville, Maxine (Higgerson) Ritch of Geneseo, IL, a brother- Russell Higgerson of Albany, NY, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Kevin Weaver officiating.

Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Interment was in the Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Friends may make memorials to the St. John's United Church of Christ.

Bradford E. Reynolds
Bradford E. Reynolds, 35, of Spanish Lake, Mo., formerly of DuQuoin, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2002 in St. Louis, Mo.

Surviving are his mother, Roxie Reynolds; brothers, Gary (Marty) Rosenberger and Ken Reynolds and nephew, Alex Rosenberger.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 1 at 11 a.m. at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating.

Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin.

Visitation was at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday, March 1 from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Emma Ford
Emma Ford, 80, of DuQuoin, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 12:25 a.m. in the Pinckneyville Skilled Care Unit.

Mrs. Ford had worked at Luster Label Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She was born July 17, 1921 in Pinckneyville, the daughter of Louis J. and Rose (Schmidt) Miller. She married Russel F. Ford Sr. on January 29, 1940 at DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on February 4, 1990.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sherri Ford of DuQuoin; one brother, Albert Miller of Pinckneyville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 9 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery at DuQuoin.

Friends called at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Friday, March 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 7:30 until 9:45 a.m. at which time services will move to the church.

Mary Irene Cashion
Mary Irene Cashion, 80, of Auxvasse, Mo., formerly of Elkville, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002 in Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton, Mo.

Mrs. Cashion was a homemaker. She was born June 11, 1921 in Jackson County, the daughter of William H. and Rosa A. (Foster) Barnes. She married Albert Cashion on September 6, 1939 in St. Louis, Mo.

Surviving are her husband, Albert of Auxvasse, Mo.; daughter, Donna L. Trisler of Auxvasse, Mo.; sons, Gerald A. of Fulton, Mo., David W. of Staunton and Randy of Auxvasse, Mo.; brother, Billie Barnes of West Frankfort; sisters, Beulah Stelle of DuQuoin and Bonnie Holland of Christopher; 23 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Wednesday, March 27 at 12 Noon at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel. Interment was in Hallidayboro cemetery.

Visitation was at the Neal-McClure Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 27 from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Roy Dean Bigham
Roy Dean Bigham, age 76, of Vergennes, died at his home on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at 5:10 p.m.

Roy Dean was born on September 4, 1925 in Perry County, the son of Roy M. and Clara (Hamilton) Bigham. He married Irma D. Engelhardt on September 27, 1952 and she survives. Roy Dean was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Murphysboro American Legion. He worked with his family as a lifelong farmer. He was also a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Vergennes, the Perry County Farm Bureau and was president of the Galum Presbyterian cemetery Association. Roy Dean loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Irma, of Vergennes; a son, Don Bigham, wife Gwen and daughter, Sara, of Pinckneyville; son, Alan Bigham, wife Tena and children, Catlin, Emma and Lucas, of Vergennes; a daughter, Jeanne Heaton, husband Rodger and children, Jill, Olivia, Jessica and Mark, of Rochester, Ill.; son, Greg Bigham, wife Cheryl and children, Macy, Holly, Taylor and Grant, of Pinckneyville and a brother, Orville Bigham and wife Doris of Pinckneyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Leehy.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Vergennes with Rev. In Sook Hwang officiating. Interment was in the Galum Presbyterian cemetery in Pinckneyville.

Visitation was held on Friday, March 8 at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. until services.

Memorials may be made to the Galum Presbyterian cemetery Association or the Won Joon Yoon Scholarship Fund.

Goldie Frank-Brun
Goldie Frank-Brun, 87, of Centralia, passed away at 10:23 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2002 at Centralia Manor.

Mrs. Frank-Brun had retired from Kresge's after 18 years as a clerk. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Ruth Circle Sunday School Class. She had lived in Centralia since 1953.

She was born October 19, 1914 at Tamaroa, the daughter of Grover and Vella (Elkins) Gilliam. She married Sylvester Vancil on December 25, 1935 in DuQuoin and he preceded her in death on June 6, 1970. She married Albert E. 'Al' Frank on June 1, 1976 in Centralia and he preceded her in death on February 1, 1994. She then married Reinhardt Brun on April 14, 2001 in Centralia.

Surviving are her husband, Reinhardt Brun of Centralia; one daughter, Shirley Parkenson and husband Harold of Centralia; two step-daughters, Jacqueline Moen of Peoria and Glenda Grafton of Kewanee; one brother, Howard Gilliam and wife Florence of DuQuoin and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands and one grandchild, Cindy Barrall.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 29 at 10 a.m. at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia with Pastor Gerald Goodman officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows cemetery in DuQuoin.

Friends called from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

Ira Ruby
Ira "Don" Ruby, 78, of Du Quoin, died at 10:25 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

Don was a retired carpenter and had been employed by contractor Dale Schwinn. He was a member of the Gospel Assembly Church in Du Quoin and had been very active in the church's activities for 43 years. He had been church treasurer for several years, played several instruments in the church orchestra and was a member of the church choir. He had also volunteered many hours of carpentry work at the church. Don served his country in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was also a member of the Carpenters' Union local.

Don was born December 20, 1923 at Tacomy, Colo., the son of Elias and Mary (Bender) Ruby. He married Vera Abbott on September 21, 1958 at the Gospel Assembly Church in Du Quoin, and she survives.

Other survivors include son, Don Ruby and wife Michelle of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two daughters, Veronica Gasaway of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Yvonne Overton and husband Earl of Du Quoin; grandchildren Trevor and Tyler Ruby, Jordan, Ryan and Austin Gasaway, J.J. and Dalton James and Mandy and Jona Overton; two sisters, Anna Lancaster and Beulah Higdon, both of Du Quoin; a brother, Eldo Ruby and wife Fran of Hensley, Ak.; a sister-in-law, Olga Ruby of Brush, Colo.; brothers- and sisters-in-law Lloyd and Earline Abbott of Du Quoin, Henry and Jeannine Abbot of Murphysboro, Harold and Margaret Abbott of Birmingham, Ala., Gene Abbott of Du Quoin, Opal McDonald of Benton, and Betty and Gary Garrett of Decatur, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Austin Ruby and sister Viola Spelts.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2002 at the Gospel Assembly Church in Du Quoin with Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating. Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, Du Quoin.

Friends may make memorials to the Gospel Assembly Church orchestra or choir.

Archie W. Summers
Archie W. Summers, born January 30, 1922, died peacefully on January 25, 2002 after a long illness.

Archie was a resident of Lake Placid, Florida since his retirement from the Army in 1975.

He is survived by his wife, B'Jo, and her mother, Lou C. Kellogg, and a son, Sean, all of Lake Placid; his son Gene and his wife Karen, and their children, Shane, Alexandra and Savannah, all of Waxahachie, Texas.

Archie was educated in DuQuoin. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University and after WW II, graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. and did graduate work at Gonzaga Law School, Troy State University and University of Southern California. A veteran of WW II, Korea and Vietnam, he was a Master Army Aviator with 33 years active service, including his last two assignments as Defense Attache' in Rangoon, Burma and as Liaison Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Moving to Lake Placid in 1975 after retiring as a Colonel from the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., he decided to run for the County Commission. After one unsuccessful attempt, he was then elected in 1986 and served two terms. He was a member of the Board for the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and the Lakes Association. He was instrumental in starting the Placid Lake Homeowners Association and was a member of TROA, the Air Force Association, the American Legion, the DAV and other military associations.

Services were scheduled for Thursday, January 31 at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Lake Placid.

Arrangements were under the loving care of Scott Funeral Home, Lake Placid, Fla.
